Experiencing Metallica in person during their Master of Puppets tour opening for Ozzy was one of the greatest nights of my teenage life. Simply amazing!
If that ozzy tour was in the 80s, I remember that. It’s when I first started hearing about Metallica. I think it was master of puppets album that was out at that time.
Same here... 54 and first time hearing them was a new guy from California who came to my Virginia school in 1984 and let me listen to his Walkman during lunch. I was hooked!

It’s so rare to find a band that has stayed together for 40 years and are still as successful as they are. There of been bands that had a good run for about 15 years and then broke up for five or six years and got back together, but I think they’re the only band that has just consistently kept going like they have on the level they are at. For good reason too. If you see them live, you will understand why their fan bases as loyal as we are.

Kalmah is an example, they just want to go hunting and they still keep their day jobs cutting down trees and stuff (at least I think that's what they do lmao). It's the Axl Roses of the metal world that kinda bring stuff down once in a while. I think even Nergal from Behemoth is, in general, a nice guy, he's mainly angry at the backwardness of Poland I think. Doesn't really hold a grudge against anyone else.

Wow bro, I have a similar story growing up, listening to gangsta rap, hanging out with people the same, bad neighborhoods. Met a dude around my age at that time that played guitar, I just happened to walk by him and he was playing the nice/flamenco guitar part in To Live Is To Die, and I told him, "teach me that, it's the most beautiful thing I ever heard, I have to know how to play it", he did and I started playing guitar that day and every day after that. To Live Is To Die by Metallica saved my life! Started playing guitar at 15. I'm 43 now and still play.
My first live show was Metallica at the Cow Palace in 1992, when I was 12. My room was plastered with their posters and I had a different one of their shirts for every day of the week!! I ALSO was in marching band throughout high school (low brass, baby!!) and it tickles me so much to think of them gifting their music to marching bands like that. I love these guys so much ... I work as a bartender each year at Lollapalooza and I can't even tell you how cool it felt to hear and see them live again after a long time, even though I was working through the show. These guys are such old pros and the way they respect their audience is a fine example to younger artists. Thanks so much for featuring them!!🙌
After all they've been through it's so cool to see them (apparently!) so at ease with each other and having a great time. If you've been in a band that long and are still successful then you gotta be grateful.
Sometimes, it's probably gratifying knowing you can settle back in your band a bit and not worry about having to break up and start a new band. I think you're right, they're probably grateful of their position.
I’m a long time ‘tallica fan (I’ll be 50 in September) and it’s just really cool to see them having fun and be part of the mainstream to some extent. I sometimes get chills when I think about how long I’ve been a fan and how much they’ve overcome to get where they are. That, and the younger fan base is checking them out, too. That’s truly an amazing thing. 🤘
I love Metallica to the core. I am 33 years old and I chose the hard way to live and make money with music only because of the love for music that Metallica nurtured in me. I am eternally grateful to them. I compose music in the style of Soul, R&B and electronica. Mostly calm and atmospheric music for the soul. But I always try to do it through the prism of love for my only and last idols in life.
So my youngest son and I went to night 1 of Metallica at Sofi stadium. Got home packed and my oldest son and I flew to Vegas to see Adele. Flew home next morning so my youngest and I could get back to Sofi to see Metallica night 2. Im 53 yrs old and it was a challenge but I did it!🤘
I've been a fan since Ride The Lightning. I saw them live for the first time when I was 16 years old...in 1988! Saw them three more times over the years. I will always be a fan and I'm happy for their mainstream success.
The Partridge Family Christmas Album just makes me love Kirk 10X more. Not because I was also a fan of that group, but because this legendary guitarist started with fun TV pop. It's just makes his black heart shine all the more brightly.
👋😁👍 Played you to my daughter and then my son while pregnant in the 80's. They are both successful adults. One a recon in the Army and one a NY Realtor. I have 5 grandkids now. Time flies. I still crank you up while driving in my 4 cylinder SUV. It used to be a 67 Mustang Fastback, but well... like I said... time flies. Much love to you all. 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Just saw these legends in Chicago for the first time . As a fan growing up in Ecuador watching these guys on the small tv it was my dream . 1 off the bucket list ✅ I’ll never forget .
I remember listening to Metallica ever since I was a baby thanks to my Dad. I'm 33 now and they are still going strong. Still hoping I can see them live one of these days!!
This is such a fantastic interview; the chemistry among them is so good and natural. The vibe is so good. These guys are also essentially solely responsible for my interest in learning and mastering guitar. The new stuff is pretty good, but as others have said, just seeing them in shape this good is really inspiring regardless.
Eeeenh, I don't want to take anything away, glad you enjoyed it. To me, it's not that good of an interview, it's just an intro to them playing for the week. You're not really learning anything new. And Kirk and Rob are blatantly in "their place," in the back, quiet. It's great they're still together, but you're looking at a very obvious hierarchy. But they do seem healthy and happy.
Saw them live in 1993 on the Black album tour as a teen and blew me away. This latest album is the first time they’ve sounded as good as back then live
The new song is absolutely killer😎...... Master of puppets is my all-time favorite 🍀 It's like most people don't accept new band members over the years either love the band's music or you don't!! James is my all-time favorite from the beginning I would so love to meet him sometime😊
It truly warms my heart to see these guys (my chilhood heros and beyond) still making music, still relevent, still doing late night talk shows, still inspiring teenage kids to pick up the guitar still performing at the highest level still selling out arenas and stadiums world wide It all makes me think back to highschool, in gym class at certain times the teacher let us play music. One day i put on Justice for all album, most of the class hated it! To those who said this is garbage back in 1989 i say this HA !!!!!! Where are your favorites from highschool today !
Been listening to Metallica ever since the Black album, when I was 12. I quickly went back and got all the previous cassettes, and officially became obsessed. I haven’t missed an album since. Seeing the younger generations (including my own kids) jump aboard the ‘tallica Train is an amazing thing.
These guys really shaped the soundtrack of my youth. A fan since 1986 (I was 14 that time), seen them many times live, and this is the first album after Justice that sounds promising enough to buy it.
My 3 yr old is a HUGE Metallica fan so we are taking him to one of the shows! He loves singing along to the MoP and RtL albums, he even makes the guitar noises during the solos. Every morning he wants to listen to For Whom the Bell Tolls live '85 in Oakland, Day on the Green. Yes, he is very specific about this video and even says "Hi Cliff" like James does in the beginning
So nice and heart warming to see them together like this after all these years and after all the fighting and not getting along well. They are legends. Love you guys and your music.
I've been listening to Masterof Puppets since day one. I recall my garage party playing it at full blast and the neighbors complaining and staring out the window
Im 31, moved to the US in 05-06, the only music i’d listen to as kid were pop songs in spanish. Then one day i put on a radio station in english and hear nothing else matters for the first time. Because of them is why i love music, and i took mariachi class in high school so i can learn their songs during winter, spring breaks. Years later, 2016 or 2017 i finally got the opportunity to see them live, and although they’re past their prime, i dont care, it’s the best concert i’ve been to.
lol, they are considered soft rock compared to modern heavy metal bands like Black Tusk, Judiciary, Left Behind, Bent LIfe, Hanzel Und Gretyl, All Out War, Get The Shot, Power Trip, NAILS, No Turning Back, Boundaries, Incendiary, Dyscarnate... There 9 min songs really sum them up well, they are a slow punch to the face, and get obliterated by the swift gut punch of todays metal.
@@728173887 They are some of the more talented bands pushing music forward. Small bands are dying by the thousands, because of anti-competitive tactics.
I’m not a heavy metal girl, but “Enter Sandman” at VT games makes the hair on my arms stand up. It’s so freaking incredible. All that jumping and excitement picking up on the Richter Scale is insane!! Go Hokies!
That's the best part about metal. It's super energetic. I mean, to me, 80s glam/hard rock was the gateway. I just loved the costumes, the get-up, the imagery, the dueling guitars, and then bam, I became a metal fan through Metallica and (later, introducing me to the harder stuff) Children of Bodom. I also keep discovering music in the opposite end of the spectrum, super relaxing, quiet music :) Gotta keep the balance!
@@EmpyreanLightASMR For sure. I like most music, just have a hard time with really loud stuff in my old age. Grew up with a wide variety. Heavy metal, hard rap and twangy country are not on my list though. To each their own though! ✌️
@@absatwell8163 I hear you. Driving with loud music messed me up for years but it's also taken years to heal/diminish the ringing sounds (I forget the word now). I'm ok with twangy country haha. if the song is catchy and has a bit of effort put into the composition, I'll usually like it.
I saw them in 1986 at the San Diego Sports Arena. They opened for Ozzie. It was amazing. Ozzie was pissed when he finally came out for his set as the encores Metallica did went on and on and on. The best concert I have ever seen. It was beyond epic.
First album I heard of them was "Rife the Lighting", which was arguably their best album. Im 31 years old and discovered them about age 13. They are still going strong, after many years of giving us their best and dealing with Covid and their own troubles in life. Thank you Metallica for your awesome musical contribution.
Big week for all Metallica fans around the world. Let’s cherish these moments this week, as there will come a day when we won’t have the excitement of a new Metallica album to look forward to. 🎉
Dang it! Where’s Evile when you need them? We need someone to keep the flame of heavy metal alive as the old guard calls it a day or quite literally dies out
Absolutely! I'm enjoying this time so very much. Been a fan for 10 years, so it's the second time I'm excited for a new Metallica record. So excited for the cinema premiere this Thursday! I feel like a kid during Christmas lol! So grateful for still having these 4 amazing guys making incredible music for all us.
this is such good timing, i just started learning master of puppets, now that i'm finally okay enough at the guitar, and they're gonna be on tv playing it wednesday. this whole week is gonna be so cool!!
I love Metallica from the moment I first heard For Whom The Bell Tolls when it was first released a long long long time ago!!! The sound was so different from anything I ever heard before and it is absolutely still 🔥to this day!!!
@@valeriehawkins8702 We taped a embarrassing dorky cover on VHS and showed it in class as part of a history lesson. Great stuff. Just look at my two favourite bands Metallica and Iron Maiden. Both fill venues around the world and keep attracting a new wave of younger fans. Proof of sustained quality, creativity and unhyped talent. When these bands retire it will be a sad day 😢
But there are also new bands coming up. Recommend checking out Japanese all-female band Lovebites. Influenced by the 80s. Like Maiden, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer, Priest. Since you're on RUclips ... Recommend their live stuff. Very good!
Apsolutely. The two biggest metal bands of all time. There will never be another band on that level. As much as I love other bands, these two are the greatest in heavy music history.

The night I hear MoP on Stranger Things...GOLD! I was 13 in the Summer of 1986, a skater (skateboards) and discovered Metallica while skating half pipe at a friend's house. It is by far my fav. metal song EVER! Then it ends up in one of my fav. shows! That was a RAD moment, lol!
I first came across Metallica 20 years and 357 days ago. I've seen them live countless times on three continents and some of my best photography was of them. Their impact on so many people has been vast. Long Live Metallica!

A shame you then chose to express your regard for them by choosing such crappy music genres to compose in. Metal is music for the soul.
Watch out for that mafia big music industry, man that stuff is super shady
@@hellfirepicturesthis is exactly what metallica would say divides the fanbase. THERE IS NO JUDGEMENT!!
👋😁👍
Played you to my daughter and then my son while pregnant in the 80's.
🤍🤍🤍🤍
Had nothing to do with anything.
Thats amazing! Good for you Metalli-grandma!😀
Just saw these legends in Chicago for the first time . As a fan growing up in Ecuador watching these guys on the small tv it was my dream . 1 off the bucket list ✅ I’ll never forget .
"No, my son's a drummer!" lmao!!!
I remember listening to Metallica ever since I was a baby thanks to my Dad. I'm 33 now and they are still going strong. Still hoping I can see them live one of these days!!
7:05 "kicks of in Amsterdam." I'm so happy that I'm gonna be there. Just great to see those guys two times! 🤘🏻
Master of Puppets song is an entity by its own and it will live forever more beautiful every passing time!
All their 80s tracks are pillars of Metal music.
Guitar Hero ruined for me, played it to much, can’t stand it anymore!
The Whole Album is gold!!
@@navyryder 🤣
I forgot that Stranger Things brought them a whole new wave of young fans, that's so awesome.
This is so great, super excited to see Metallica for 3 nights on TV!!! Kimmel is at another level lol
Saw them live in 1993 on the Black album tour as a teen and blew me away. This latest album is the first time they’ve sounded as good as back then live
The new song is absolutely killer😎......
Master of puppets is my all-time favorite 🍀
It's like most people don't accept new band members over the years either love the band's music or you don't!!
James is my all-time favorite from the beginning I would so love to meet him sometime😊
It truly warms my heart to see these guys (my chilhood heros and beyond)
still making music,
still relevent,
still doing late night talk shows,
still inspiring teenage kids to pick up the guitar
still performing at the highest level
still selling out arenas and stadiums world wide
It all makes me think back to highschool, in gym class at certain times the teacher let us play music.
One day i put on Justice for all album, most of the class hated it!
To those who said this is garbage back in 1989 i say this
HA !!!!!! Where are your favorites from highschool today !
so excited for their new music!! seeing them in august for the first time
i love Kirk and Rob sm and the bond the band still holds thru so many years! 💜🖤
Been listening to Metallica ever since the Black album, when I was 12. I quickly went back and got all the previous cassettes, and officially became obsessed. I haven’t missed an album since. Seeing the younger generations (including my own kids) jump aboard the ‘tallica Train is an amazing thing.
Master of Puppets has been my favorite Metallica song for years.
Love the song , everytime ,over and over again
I had that Partridge Family album too…amazing Kirk!🤘🏻
James has a great sense of humor!
I'm always lookign to see what kind of shoes Kirk is rocking!!! :P
Saw them when I was 20 at the pyramid in Memphis in 1997....I'll never ever forget it, had a crush on Hetfield ever since......
These guys really shaped the soundtrack of my youth. A fan since 1986 (I was 14 that time), seen them many times live, and this is the first album after Justice that sounds promising enough to buy it.
I love when Jimmy has Metallica on the show, they’re such great guests and great guys!
when jimmy has lars on the show...fixed
Who is the man they greeted when they entered ? (before Kimmel)
@@rjcv81 His right hand man, Guillermo
This video just made me smile so much! Love these guys. I had to play it a second time. “No. My son’s a drummer”…best line😅
Yes, he is very specific about this video and even says "Hi Cliff" like James does in the beginning
stoph it.
I love how Tye Trujillo took his father's place in Suicidal Tendencies and is currently rocking out with them. He played for Korn too.
As once a wise man said: "My first combat deployment was like a Metallica song - loud, violent and lasted about 9 minutes."
Also night after Taco Bell
lol, they are considered soft rock compared to modern heavy metal bands like Black Tusk, Judiciary, Left Behind, Bent LIfe, Hanzel Und Gretyl, All Out War, Get The Shot, Power Trip, NAILS, No Turning Back, Boundaries, Incendiary, Dyscarnate...
There 9 min songs really sum them up well, they are a slow punch to the face, and get obliterated by the swift gut punch of todays metal.
@@BenLA5 Bad news - music ain't a competition.
And also - never heard of literally any of the bands you've just mentioned.
@@728173887 They are some of the more talented bands pushing music forward. Small bands are dying by the thousands, because of anti-competitive tactics.
I really love how they started vibing to Jimmy’s band playing 72 Seasons in the beginning
Anyone notice that Kirk was holding the pick through the whole show? :D
The pick of DESTINY
It was beyond epic.
that is amazing man. congratz
Jimmy: Can you stay for a whole week?
James: YEAAAAAAH!
First album I heard of them was "Rife the Lighting", which was arguably their best album. Im 31 years old and discovered them about age 13. They are still going strong, after many years of giving us their best and dealing with Covid and their own troubles in life. Thank you Metallica for your awesome musical contribution.
Love how the whole band greets Guillermo
Most of them even before greeting Jimmy!
Love that these guys love each other so much 🤘🤘🤘
Big week for all Metallica fans around the world. Let’s cherish these moments this week, as there will come a day when we won’t have the excitement of a new Metallica album to look forward to. 🎉
I'm dreading that day🤘🏻
@@revwillyg6450 All good things come to an end unfortunately.
So true. Sometimes you need to step back and put things into perspective. I appreciate that.
So grateful for still having these 4 amazing guys making incredible music for all us.
this is such good timing, i just started learning master of puppets, now that i'm finally okay enough at the guitar, and they're gonna be on tv playing it wednesday. this whole week is gonna be so cool!!
группа прекрасно выглядит. Ждем новый альбом на этой неделе.

Sin duda!
I was at both of their concerts in Athens in 1999 and 2007. I grew up with them; they've always been and still is my favorite band.
I love Metallica from the moment I first heard For Whom The Bell Tolls when it was first released a long long long time ago!!! The sound was so different from anything I ever heard before and it is absolutely still 🔥to this day!!!
First song I learned by ear all the way through, around 1988! Me and a drummer friend did that, Seek and Destroy and Fade to Black in jr. high
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS Nice!!! Fade to Black is awesome!!!
@@valeriehawkins8702 We taped a embarrassing dorky cover on VHS and showed it in class as part of a history lesson. I don't have the hilarious scripted beginning wearing togas and talking about the Oracle of Delphi but it cut to a "dream sequence" of the future just so we could spam the class with our heavy metal, haha! Check it out...
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS Now that sounds awesome!! My hs was lame as hell.. everyone thought if ya listened to metal you were a Satan worshiper .. lmfao now it's a lot more listened to by a lot of people.
I’m visiting my grandparents in Vail Colorado this week and I knew since I got here I had to go to James’ house and today I did it was pretty cool
Melt my heart
God I feel old. I remember when they were young.
But when they come on the radio the years fade away.
3:49 As a drummer, I spit out my (theoretical) drink laughing.
Im almost 16 years old and i grew up listening to metallica, they are my favorite band of all time, and seeing master of puppets on stranger things was just the coolest to see
I hope that All nightmare long is finally played live, last time was 2016 😢
The night I hear MoP on Stranger Things...GOLD! I was 13 in the Summer of 1986, a skater (skateboards) and discovered Metallica while skating half pipe at a friend's house. It is by far my fav. metal song EVER! Then it ends up in one of my fav. shows! That was a RAD moment, lol!
Craig Ferguson's Metallica Week was amazing. Good old days.
I first came across Metallica 20 years and 357 days ago. I've seen them live countless times on three continents and some of my best photography was of them. I became a Metal Photographer and Journalist because of them, set up my own metal webzine because of them, learned to play guitar because of them, and became a band manager because of them. Their impact on so many people has been vast.
Long Live Metallica!
Awesome Jimmy 😂the GOATS all week 🤯
Glad to have had the opportunity to see them live a few years back. MOP is my all time fave album.
It makes me a bit sad how Robert automatically takes a seat at the back. He slays on the bass and 100% should sit up front ❤
Robert is humble legend
Well so does Kirk
It's all preplanned
Of the big three in late-night network talk shows,I'm glad this Jimmy got Metallica. He is the best, and most deserving of the honor.
