When I was in high school, my favorite band at the time was Van Halen. A new kid moved to our area, we became good friends and he told me that, if I liked Van Halen, I would love Metallica. I was ordering my 12 albums on tape from Columbia House and I saw Master of Puppets on there. So I ordered it. I saved that one for last. When the music started, my jaw dropped and I was in awe of every single song on the album. That was the day Metallica became my favorite band. 👍🏼

Never realized how fizzy the guitars sounded on their own . They work in the mix one of the best rhythm metal tones ever put to tape . Cliff transcribed the guitar harmonies for them . Kirk said that they could’ve done it trial and error and it take a day or take it to Cliff and he could tell them in a few minutes what to play . Cliff’s contributions cannot be overstated .

@Shockheadd45Enter Sandman is an overplayed, sellout pop metal, borderline hard rock 'hit' written by a metal band which at the time was clearly going for success on the radio. Its a gateway song for people who have never listened to metal before and it has nothing on this masterpiece or some of their other stuff from their heyday, not musically, not energetically, and certainly not in terms of depth and dynamics.
*they mixed that with groove, nuance and melody*
---> Like those aren't already present in Master Of Puppets. Enter Sandman released on any prior album wouldn't have made a dent, Puppets is a timeless thrash / heavy metal classic.
*which is exactly how Metallica started*
----> Enter Sandman doesn't sound anything like what they sounded like when they 'started', please go and get your ears checked.

The part where you're talking about Cliff playing the driving bass line without muddying up the individual notes from the guitars is something that I think is really important. So often I hear bass players parroting the notes the guitar players are playing, and I think it works sometimes, but most of the time I want to hear the bass also reinforcing it's connection to the drums. If the bass is always chasing the guitar line it's sort of leaving the drums hanging to my ear. This is the perfect example of the bass connecting to both the guitars and drums and using the entire space in a good way without simply parroting one or the other. He's staying with the beat and throwing a note to the guitars when necessary to help beef up their end. It must have been a real pleasure to jam with him.

Love how isolates the instruments so we can better understand them. Would have loved to have Rick as a teacher. That being said I did love my teacher haha. Crazy older guy who would always tell me to give him my guitar before we started so he could tune it. I would meticulously tune it before each lesson and his old ears were off at that point and he would just butcher my tuning. Room was tiny, he always had coffee breath but he loved music and he showed me how to get after it on that guitar. Mom was always late picking me up from my lesson so I’d wander around that store wide eyed and just take it in. The guy who worked the counter was good to me cuz he knew the family situation was kinda gnarly so he’d always tell me to grab a couple of free pics for my guitar. Still remember how that place smelled. It was that smell you’d recognize if you’ve ever out your face next to the the hollow in your acoustic. That wood smell. Damn...

I've always thought Orion was a musical masterpiece that is so good it didn't require lyrics to engage the listener. In fact, lyrics would have detracted from the music, and hidden some of the greatness behind James' voice. Orion never gets old to me, and I've been amazed from the 1st time I heard it to the 1000th time I've heard it. It's one thing to hear the band explain their influence, then go, "oh, yeah, I hear that", then it is an entirely different thing to hear the music and know how they were influenced... Rick, you are truly a musical genius. The amount of cataloged data in your brain on the music industry and music theory needed to arrive to these conclusions is nothing short of genius.

That moment you realize you’ve been playing the bass riff wrong your entire life ...

Welcome to the club. I’m 51 been playing since the ‘80s and since the internet I learned I been playing a ton of songs wrong. We did have to learn by ear with a record player though...

Depends on what you consider wrong. Rob plays it with the guitar and I am pretty sure Jason did too. (And I prefer it that way).

Always felt he was quite in the mix. It’s hard to pick out the nuance in his playing.

@The Anti Christ I do not disagree on that. The bass doesn't need to do the same as the guitar, but that doesn't mean that when it does is bad either.
Depends on the song and IMO this particular song sounds better with doubling the line rather than playing agains't it.
