I'm just going to say, I love David. I'm a Blackman that was born and raised in LA, and grew up listening to him in junior high school. My parents moved to Pasadena where I got a job at Musicplus, and he came in and we struck up a conversation. He asked me what's new thing that people are listening too, and I had been waiting for the Temple of the Dogs album to get released, and had just dropped. I recommended that to him, and the next time he came in he yelled out where's Bill. He gave me props. It made my century. What a down to earth cool man!!!!!!
@Christopher Lee very confident edit got that Method from Jimmy Page and Ritchie blackmore but i could be wrong he mightve been the first to compose that way!
Omg the last couple minutes he mentioned a piano at Auschwitz. My grandfather was one of the US soldiers that freed the prisoners. When I was a boy I remember in his story he mentioned a prisoner auditorium. He said they were clearing buildings looking for Germans hiding not knowing they had fled. There was a stage with a tarp covering something big. His buddy aimed his rifle while my grandpa quickly pulled the tarp off. He said it was a ‘beautiful piano’. He tapped a few keys and it was the best sound he ever heard. In his Italian accent he said ‘Can you imagine after all the filth and hell, bombs and bullets, what that sounded like to us?’ Thank you for this interview DLR.
They had an orchestra, swimming pool, brothel, post office, dental clinic, canteen, camp money, greenhouses, soccer field, theater, maternity ward. We've been seriously lied to.
This interview got me emotional because I felt Dave’s sincerity and passion for music. Glad to hear he’s still close with Alex and Michael. They have a soul connection I am sure of it. Thanks Dave, you’re the real deal.
we are damn lucky to have this absolute legend still on Earth and speaking kindly to his audience, not resenting us, not lost, not wistful, not regretful, just simply HERE FOR IT. ALL HAIL VAN HALEN
Yes, those last two minutes were very deep! Never expected it from him. Of course, Dave never knew "how" to sing. No range. But he damn knew well "what" to sing. His diamond persona made up for the rest. DLR VH era will always stand up to the test of time.
@@OnlyInItalyVideos Honestly most hard rock singers back then couldn’t sing. Lemmy, Alice Cooper, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson definitely don’t “sing” well, but they had good melodies and fit the aesthetic (like Dave). It’s always puzzled me that he’s singled out for lacking range when the standard in his genre is like Gene Simmons lol.
MA was always the red-headed stepchild who the media and EVH just stepped over. His voice pairing w/ Dave's is perfect. That is signature VH. Like Dave said. Sure Eddie had talent he was the founder with his brother. Who, I compare as a step above Lars Ulrich of Metallica. Alex received 1/4 of the royalties for playing drums... At least MA had a harmonizing voice that made a signature sound.
DLRoth knows his s.. t. Although, you any VH fan knows Anthony's vocal was vital. His bass. His look. Hia stage persona as well. These 4 guys had priceless band chemistry. Vocally, Anthony reminds me of... Christine McVeigh for Fleetwood Mac.. Or Graham Nash for CSN... Garfunkel as Roth says.. They seal the deal . Give distinct unique definition to back vocals. it Was cool Diamond have credit. Rock on man
I really appreciated what he said at the end - which teared me up a bit because it was real. A lot of musicians never had any skin in the game. His stuff in Van Halen was balls to the wall. Lasting impact. He's THE definitive rockstar in my books - in all the best, most inspiring ways. Much respect.
wow. I cant say how much respect I have for DLR and VH. I grew up with their music. I gradated HS in '77. I grew up in Hacienda Heights SoCal when backyard parties with live bands and keggers were the norm. It's no wonder they blew the doors off any competition of that time.
I agree 100%! I love Eddie and Wolf Gang is a force of his own, but when they had the reunion it should have been Michael Anthony with them also! The vocals of Dave and Mike were as much a part of the VH sound as Eddie's guitar licks!
When your talking about DLR , about 10% of people who take the time to drop an opinion areas on the fence. They can take him or leave him . About 20% can't stand him , and the other 70% ( such as myself) love him. I'm one of the worlds biggest VH fans still to this day , almost as I was in my teens thru my 40's. My favorite member has always been the engine of that Formula 1 racing car Eddie. Dave was a close 2nd. Those 2 together did more for rock music than 80% of even the most die hard of VH fans will ever know. I made it a mission to dig into this bands history , their bio's and most anything I could get my hands on. When I see a person wearing an old genuine concert shirt that you can't get anywhere else, I offer to buy it off of them on the spot ! How many people you know are that ridiculous ! I don't live in LA , and I'm not $$ loaded , but I have still managed to have seen them 14 times in concert , including seeing them 3 time in a 5 day span (long story), so if you want to know anything (within human reason). Just ask away. Getting back on track , I have DLR's disease, which has me getting off of the subject and rambling on a bit , but their history ranks among the top acts to have ever climbed onto a stage . Eddie commenting on Dave said it best in an interview once. Somebody asked him about Dave antics to which Eddie responded ,. "" His rambling on and his Attention Deficit Disorder, you ask "" ? Well , Ive been asked that many times and after thinking about it so many times a., I guess I would describe it all like this...... Don't mistake his antics for lack of intelligence. Dave is very creative as I think him and I have made some great music together. So just remember that he's creative, intelligent, and overall a well read guy. But sometimes something short circuits and he has a little trouble connecting all the dots "" !
His statement of Michael Anthony at 8:49 is both genuine and deeply understated. Michael Anthony really is an underrated musician, but especially as a vocalist. This is what gives Van Halen their signature style. Dave laid down the right foundation but I think Sammy came in and the bands entire sound would've been lost without Michael Anthony
I ran into Dave at a bar in NYC once & spent some time having a drink w/ him. He is nothing like his energetic, crazy, non stop public self. He was by himself, quiet, introspective & sweet. I asked "Can I call you Diamond Dave" & he said "I prefer it if you didn't" He had a notebook w/ him & this is late 2009 so I think he was on his EMT gig.
Been listening to and enjoying Van Halen for 40 years. Let's not wait until Roth is gone to celebrate his talent and extremely unique contribution to pop culture and music in general.
fuck yeah.... Ed is king, aint no doubt, but I'm realistic and realize we may never have heard of him, if it wasn't for Dave. It took me a while to understand that...
1978, I was 19 and in the Air Force in the middle of nowhere called Altus OK. I went to a party at a beat up old house that looked just like the Delta House from the movie Animal House. At one party in one night, I got turned onto Van Halen, AC/DC, Rush, Montros, and yes Journey. I was never the same after that party. A few years later when I was out of the Air Force, The first two concerts I ever went to was Van Halen, Diver Down and Jump. It was awesome. Dave was incredible.... now were old.... but still rockers! Thanks Dave, thank you so much.
I saw them on the debut album tour when they opened up for Sabbath and they blew Sabbath off the stage. Their sound was just something like no one had ever heard before
78 I was in Germany with the AF at Spangdahlem. Met Dave in Pasadena at a backyard party when they were MAMMOTH. He's still the cool-ash-mutha I met. Rock on -
DLR! People who don't know don't know. This guy is a gem. His IQ is probably off the charts. He's done everything you can imagine from free climbing cliff faces to learning multiple languages to becoming an EMT to crushing it as a Rock-N-Roll front man. Yeah, he's quirky. But he is THE MAN. Fucking LOVE when he's on with Joe!
The man also spent many years in Japan and from what I’ve been told speaks Japanese to some extent as well. I go to school in Tokyo and one of my professors said he would see him walk by campus all the time in the 90’s and he’d have to yell out to him “DIAMOND DAVE!”, to which Dave would throw both hands up in the air 😂
@@Adatoode He was one of the biggest rock stars the world. I think people forget how huge not only Van Halen was, but DLR with his solo career. Those videos were classics on 80's MTV. From the late 70's to the late 80's, VH and DLR ran shit.
It's really a trip to learn that the horrors of WWII helped spawn the utter global joy that was Van Halen. Fate works in very strange ways. Everybody talks about Roth's ego, and it did reach historic proportions, but when he was young and hungry, he was real smart and humble to soak in all that information from available dojos as he calls them. Many cocky young men want to do it all themselves, and fail because of it.
Powerful stuff, especially for toward the end. His music instructor had been there, survived when others did not, and imparted that wisdom in David. The video gets a thumbs up for that alone. The subscription is for Joe Rogan's ability to get his guests to open up, in ways few others can.
You gotta navigate through his self-serving bullshit to enjoy the story, and that gets tiresome very quickly. I could only tolerate him for a half hour or so before I'd have to get some fresh air, ya follow? Ya dig?
Far too controlled by his ego in his younger years. He went through a stretch where he didn't talk to the band off stage when they were on tour. Just stupid prima donna stuff
My dad was the original keyboardist, Jim Pewsey. My mom, Lana Soisson, knew the brothers and band too. She had nothing but nice things to remember about the Helens and their family. I dont know Dave, but Im assuming they both had similar personalities and clashed. 😂Lol. Id love to hear and know stories of my father, from his high school band years, he spent his life dreaming about. Even if they are not "good" stories. He passed away in a car accident, but always wanted to play one last time with the band. ❤
Man.. Every time he ends an interview as of late...I'm left in tears. That is truth. I feel it. Like watching gymnastics and they stick the landing. I don't know why ... But I cry. Thanks Dave for all the years. And not one story of an abused Chick a divorce, a rehab escape etc. Never walked up during an awards ceremony and upstaged the winner. Only Rock n roll class.. And that's an emotionally disturbed class I'll admit. But thanks... Not the ideal roll model . But a model none the less. Thanks again. Stay Frosty
Dave has lived a very interesting life. I remember hearing an interview with him where he said he knew early on he didn’t want to use his fame and wealth to get “things” like houses and cars, etc . He wanted to have experiences. So he took treks through the jungle, did mountain climbing, was a paramedic for several years, moved to Japan to live and study. He’s got some quirks but the guy has lived a very interesting life.
yeah he's done interesting things. however, how happy has his life been? he's never been married, never had children (that he fesses up to, anyway) , always has been alone.....he might have walked through amazonian jungles and such and I wonder if a lot of that is trying to fill something in him that he's never had.
@@SillyGoose2024 that might not be his thing, a lot of adults never want to have children and some also don’t want to be married, he certainly had a lot of friends especially in his hay day plus he’s older and still is in great spirits, I have a lot of respect for the dude
@@oxonomine it also might not be. it also might be the result of a lifetime of choices. but....BACK TO THE POINT.....when people trip over themselves talking about how great some hero of theirs life has been.....look closer. its possible that on the outside it looks like sun and in his case he might be sad and lonely on the inside.
Black man 62 years old from Birmingham, AL. Teenage years listened to everything Van Halen, love David Lee Roth. Like many teenagers during that time, would try to mimic his voice, that rock scream that only David Lee Roth can do. Great to see he's still around.
Anthony is fabulous. Understated musician. I’m happy DLR acknowledges him! That story about his music teacher was unreal( my dad was also in Auschwitz).
I was thinking the same thing. He's exactly what you want as a front man but having to take a road trip with him would probably be miserable. This is the kind of guest that takes over the show to the point where the host is irrelevant. It's entertaining though.
hahaha felt the same vibe. The greatest frontman in history was almost too much for renaissance Rogan. Diamond Dave probably got him really stoned before the show and made him unable follow those stream of consciousness answers. Rogan felt a little wokey trying to pin down the great David Lee Roth! what a legend. mad respect for both nonetheless.
This episode exposed how boring rogan really is. DLR was so open and entertaining and rogan sounded annoyed and and unable to be in a fun state of mind. He kept trying to change the subject to fit his needs. I would rather listen to DLR all day rather then rogan. Also, rogan has to stop trying to talk over his interviews. DLR is awesome and I would hang w him any day.
@@ejl74 he has a drinking problem & so many of his interviews have been wasted because of it, sadly. Soooo many missed opportunities, just because Joe is a grown ass man & still hasn't been able to perfect the timing of putting the bottle down when he should. His stand up is exactly the same. You'd think all of the discipline that comes from martial arts would help him master this. 🤷♂️

Grew up in Pasadena. Dave’s dad, who was a doctor, came to a career day event at my high school, and was telling us hilarious stories about being a doctor, including getting his son stitched up after getting into a scuffle. He was a pleasant, humorous, and rightfully proud man and father. RIP Dr. Roth. Long live Dave.
What Dave got right from the start is that he wasn't a singer. He was an entertainer. With a gargle whiskey and broken glass for breakfast blues voice. Coupled with the best technical guitarist in the world that no one knew about yet. During an age of punk when good musicians tried to hide it. There was just one of him and the band Van Halen in the whole genre. They would become a genre. Quiet Riot, Motley Crew, the entire Sunset Strip scene and hair bands all happened because of Van Halen. I'm not sure they would have without VH's contrary success.
No question LA hair metal would not have existed without Van Halen (and no band ever equalled them, though songs here and there were great). I was a kid when Van Halen came out and I saw the imitations start flying into and through the entire 80s. It became why an underground started and eventually spawned Nirvana 13 years later. It was inevitable VH would be imitated when a band hits with that much force and success. Metallica would have a million imitators also. Roth's dedication came through in his lyrics if not his antics. He wrote some truly great working class lyrics.
I enjoyed Dave's voice because of it's roughness. I still listen to those old school Van Halen songs and like his gargling broken glass voice. And of course EVH on lead guitar. The backup bass and drums are not exactly impressive in terms of showing off like Eddie and Dave, but they are technically perfect.
Gotta love the realness of this guy. Missing a tooth, no shirt, paint all over his coat. How refreshing in a sea of Narcissistic concided people these days. Now that's Rock N Roll. Thanks Dave keeping it real 101. What an amazing teacher and influencer in pop culture.
He's an absolute bore. Completely on another planet. Laughs at stuff that isn't even remotely funny. Joe doesn't even know what to do here. One of the worst podcasts I've ever heard. Perhaps it's American humour.
@John Peric i bet he could run circles around you... hes always been a health nut.....hard partier, but health & clean eating the rest of the time, hes talked of it often throughout his career.
Awesome and in-depth…chilling at 9:40 about Dave’s singing coach. I enjoy these interviews because, somehow and in someway, Joe pulls out the “lines in-between” that is heartfelt.
Ya... But he's still a rambling maniac. This is what happens when you have tons of money and drugs and everybody you're surrounded with just agrees with everything you say and never tells you "no" for 3 decades.
Often it's hard to know exactly what he's getting at, though, but he steamrolls on like you know exactly what he means at every moment, while you're looking for context in your head. "It's all poetry, man."
Ted Templeman's book and Van Halen Rising by Greg Renoff really made me realize Dave's crucial importance to the ultimate success of the band and gave me great respect for him. Renoff's book clearly shows they may have never made it, despite great, great talent, without Dave's perseverance and cheer leading, let alone his skills ultimately with lyrics and showmanship. I love both versions of VH, but without Dave, we may never have heard them!
Probably the best interview I have seen of David, this was totally heartfelt and from his heart. He is reliving those memories as though they were just yesterday. When he spoke about being a performer and how it relates to the audience, I get that. There are good bands that come and go, but GREAT bands, far fewer to be sure, Van Halen and DLR are one of those great bands.
I could listen to Dave for hours. One of thee best ever. My father was part of a unit that liberated the Nordhausen deathcamp, and it was active when they invaded it. Hats off to Dave, for remembering his mentor's lesson and...what was behind it. Dave...a Jew, understands the gravity, of that lesson....
I met Dave shortly after his last appearance and he was the nicest dude ever. Told me a bad joke and laughed at it but was so genuine and humble. Not at all what I expected.
You can say what you want about DLR-taste is subjective- it his love of music and life is undeniable. And the last two minutes of this talk are incredible.
Yo thats how I felt. Like he seems like a cool dude but he was just all over the place lol. I had to turn it off because it was distracting me too much at work.
I grew up with Eddie on Holliston Ave. in Pasadena back in the early 1970s. David Lee Roth used to date my sister’s best friend, who lived across the street from the Van Halen’s. Dave would show up at her house every day and lay back on his motorcycle in front of her house, waiting for her to get home from school. You could hear these guys practicing in their garage all the way down the street to my house (a block away). Believe it or not, I was never really into the band Van Halen at the time. My taste in music had gone a different direction back then. The best thing I remember about the Van Halen’s (being a kid at the time), is Eddie’s mom always gave out the best candy every Halloween to us trick-or-treaters. So, when I think of Eddie, I don’t think of him as some kind of rock star, I think of him as a childhood friend who I always used to pick on for going to PHS (Pasadena High School) because (as everyone knows) the best high school in Pasadena is BLAIR HIGH SCHOOL!!! Sorry Eddie - I guess I still can’t help myself!🤣
David Lee Roth is the greatest , most talented and charismatic rock front man of all time. Seeing Van Halen live has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Love you , Diamond Dave, " those were good times"🌹
Unbelievable amount of learned traits and learnings from other masters at their crafts, does Dave talk about and share. Incredible; what a walking Van Halen encyclopedia and human being Dave is. Love the way he shares his memories and learnings.
Probably the only time I got emotional listening to a DLR interview. Say whatever you want about this man but bar none he was the greatest front man/live entertainer of that generation. Since all we have is the music, LONG LIVE VAN HALEN!!
Exactly!..I love the way he expresses himself, it’s so captivating, you hang on every word he says and also you get a new found respect for VH and how passionate and hard they worked their music all the way! 👑
Honestly, David's ending of this video: this is probably one of the most powerful moments I have ever seen of the Joe Rogan Show, if not THE most powerful. "Sing as if a bad review would put you up the chimney." That is as chilling as it gets.
I love cats like Dave......he walks that tight rope of being "nuts" and being a "genius" and when its all said and done I would think the latter.Dude is dope AF.

Story? It was like one interruption followed by a bullet point, then two details from the previous story, then jumps to 1979, then a 10 second laugh maniacally for no apparent reason. For 3. Straight. Hours. I got maybe one good 15 minutes segment when his mind came together and connected the dots.. by the end of this my brain was angry with me. God bless Joe
That’s fuckin awesome man, it’s my favorite VH album by a sliver. The universe is wild, funny how things link up. Years ago I was out on a long run, 8 miles or so, listened to the entire 10,000 days album, and a little into Lateralus, walked through the front door into the living room, put RUclips on, and Maynard from Tool was on for the second time live on JRE. Wild!!
David Lee Roth helped to define what is means to be Rock Star. He seems abrasive because his charisma and energy weren’t meant to be experienced one on one. He was born to be on stage and in front of no less than 10,000 people. When you experience him in that venue, it feels intimate because Dave’s personae completely fills a stadium. He and Freddy Mercury both had that quality (although, Freddy also had the voice… but hey, Dave knew how to maximize the voice he does have).
David was as big a character is rock'n'roll could hold... and then some. His non-stop rap could chew both ears off. I'm sure he drove the band nuts times. But he was a great front man, as wild and crazy as he was... and obviously still is.

Dave is wickedly smart, highly intelligent, insightful, and entertains himself in the way he thinks, speaks, and recalls. We just happen to be in the room. High compliment.
Lol we get it, he's got charisma. He also is self indulgent & conceited to such a degree that if he didn't have the discography of Van Halen 78-84, you would rightly dismiss his ramblings as an over the hill queen who loves the sound of his own voice. You can respect the guys past without licking his balls with mindless platitudes.
Jaime's crying was my introduction to David Lee & the Van Halen s on a southern California beach in Ventura county the summer of 85 after finishing up the best sophomore year in high school a guy could have. Been rocking to them ever since. Thanks Joe. From Kansas City MO.
I can honestly say that Dave is one of the most interesting guys that I've ever heard speak. He has led an unusual life with many diverse experiences. He is a martial artist, a world traveler, a singer/songwriter, a tattoo enthusiast, and the de facto historian for Van Halen-since Eddie and Alex were never big conversationalists, and Michael seems to be pretty much "in the now" most of the time.
There was a song back in 2009 from the band 'the bird and the bee' called Diamond Dave. When you have a mildly popular indie rock sing written exclusively about you, you are probably a rock legend.
I love how Joe lets his guests speak! That makes for a great interview as opposed to the interviewer who doesn’t get that that they have a legend on their show and they can’t shut up long enough to hear the good stories by guys like DLR!
Without question… one of (if not the best) “front man” of any R&R band ever! A true mensch! Always entertaining, brilliant and unapologetically honest! Certainly miss the old days of VH!
Wow. Just wow!!! That last part of the interview when Dave started speaking of his singing coach and through the rest of the interview was absolutely hardly m heartfelt and INCREDIBLE!!! Wow!!!!
Love how he includes Mike and his amazing vocal lines, that added to the VH sound..And he was a damn good bass player too. Complimented the band as a whole.
I can only tolerate so much "Diamond Dave" in one sitting. But man, I love it when "Just Dave" tells stories of his life and the business, in a simple genuine way. 😊
This is the biggest understatement for Van Halen. If it wasn't for Roth they would never have been as big or as safe without him. He protected the band and he literally is the one who said, let's call it "Van Halen."
@@HunterRouth Exactly! Only old school VH fans understand this. After Eddie left us...I found myself listening to DLR VH. That's stuff that will stand the test of time.
@@kenthhamner2641 1000%. Dave also directed all the music-videos, he did a all the riders to make sure proper requirements were ready for the band at every show and in the beginning Roth was the one who told Eddie to lie about his amp and turn around early in the clubs so people couldn't steal his licks. Roth is literally a genius regardless of how he comes across. He is literally the son of a Doctor and the nephew of a successful musician. Roth is nutty but he absolutely knows what he is doing at a moment's notice.

Yeah I'll never listen to 'Dirty Movies' the same way
It's amazing how he recognizes Michael Anthony's role in Van Halen's sound and success.
Love that later part when he starts to talk music. Imagine Eddie sitting next to him. No wonder the early VH made incredible songs.
@@IanCrouse I always though it was Eddie doing the backup vocals.
Rock on man
@C.Nash Sounds like all one guy to me. Could you give me an example of each singing backup?
I really appreciated what he said at the end - which teared me up a bit because it was real. A lot of musicians never had any skin in the game. His stuff in Van Halen was balls to the wall. Lasting impact. He's THE definitive rockstar in my books - in all the best, most inspiring ways. Much respect.
Yeah, that crushed me. Made me re-think everything that I thought I knew :O
wow. I cant say how much respect I have for DLR and VH. I grew up with their music. I gradated HS in '77. I grew up in Hacienda Heights SoCal when backyard parties with live bands and keggers were the norm. It's no wonder they blew the doors off any competition of that time.
I was born in '77 and missed all that kinda fun. Mine was different - I might've traded mine for yours. haha Thanks for sharing. :)@@deanda5150
Took the words right out of me, Thank You!
Dave has a great low end rock and soul vibe to his voice, always did. But Michael Anthony's high harmonies were always phenomenal. It made the sound!
Dude Mike could HIT THE HELL outta some Mariah Carey notes! The live album version of ain’t talking bout love blows me away still.
Yep. Great to hear Dave acknowledge that fully. Too bad Ed couldn’t get his head outta his ass since 1984
DLR and Michael Anthony harmonizing together is as recognizable as the Beatles, Eagles, etc.
I agree 100%! I love Eddie and Wolf Gang is a force of his own, but when they had the reunion it should have been Michael Anthony with them also! The vocals of Dave and Mike were as much a part of the VH sound as Eddie's guitar licks!
Yep. Or The Beach Boys, Earth Wind Fire, etc.

This man is highly intelligent with an exceptionally detailed memory.
And nobody can out-laugh him.
He had a talk show replacing Howard Stern back in the day. Terrible show...but I agree, he's a bright guy.
And nobody knows WTF he's talking about. . He rambles
Except... The Beatles didn't do anything close to _six_ years in Hamburg.
DLR is a moron.
I asked "Can I call you Diamond Dave" & he said "I prefer it if you didn't"
He had a notebook w/ him & this is late 2009 so I think he was on his EMT gig.
When I read his book that was the same feeling I got.
Funny how many many times he has called himself Diamond Dave in interviews
@@l.t.w8985 I thought the same thing & thought he would get a kick out of it, apparently not in his personal life
He must turn off when he's not on camera. To be that intense non stop is impossible
Those EMT's must have hated when he left them. That would be the best time at work ever being an EMT in NYC.
My Lord that last couple of minutes was absolutely intense. Dave is already intense but damn. That was incredibly amazing.
AWESOME JRE! Fricken AWESOME!!!!!
Been listening to and enjoying Van Halen for 40 years. Let's not wait until Roth is gone to celebrate his talent and extremely unique contribution to pop culture and music in general.
Agree
fuck yeah....
Rock on -
That's about a 90 min drive away from me. Duncan Demons baby
So true..when people say 1 in a million,I think of Diamond Dave.

I think the thing about DLR is, yes, he loves to talk, but he listens twice as much at the same time. Almost no one is capable of doing that.

Powerful stuff, especially for toward the end. His music instructor had been there, survived when others did not, and imparted that wisdom in David. The video gets a thumbs up for that alone. The subscription is for Joe Rogan's ability to get his guests to open up, in ways few others can.
They open up because Rogan has the sense to shut his mouth and let them express...
I can sit and listen to DLR tell his stories for hours... far more intelligent and insightful than most people give him credit for.

Id love to hear and know stories of my father, from his high school band years, he spent his life dreaming about. Even if they are not "good" stories.

I'd expect he'd tone it down without a mic in front, but yeah.
I was thinking the same thing. He's exactly what you want as a front man but having to take a road trip with him would probably be miserable. This is the kind of guest that takes over the show to the point where the host is irrelevant. It's entertaining though.

David Lee Roth, only entertainer in the history of JRE to have defeated the “Rogan Rant”.

Well said. I didn't even know punk existed in the 70s as a child in La. I Luvd Rok N Roll at that time.
Ed is great but the most technical is debatable
I enjoyed Dave's voice because of it's roughness. I still listen to those old school Van Halen songs and like his gargling broken glass voice. And of course EVH on lead guitar. The backup bass and drums are not exactly impressive in terms of showing off like Eddie and Dave, but they are technically perfect.

For 3. Straight. Hours. I got maybe one good 15 minutes segment when his mind came together and connected the dots.. by the end of this my brain was angry with me.
God bless Joe
“We laugh like Pirates” - that’s what it’s all about right there. Great stuff DLR
That was awesome interview. My God Dave's articulation and ability to tell a story is off the charts.
So impactful - Talking about his teacher - Left a lasting impression on him . . .
I got high as shit last night and listened to the whole 1984 album... and wake up to this! Oh how the worlds collide.
This is gold lol.
All 31 minutes and 48 seconds of it. That's an EP where I come from!
Wild!!
Gr8 post. There’s no such thing as coincidence!!
Took a turn there at the end. Serious. Respect
That made me tear up... never a dull moment with Dave
A conversation between DLR and Gary Busey would be epic.
Damn straight
Heads would explode!
I'd love to throw in great baseball left pitcher, Bill "Spaceman" Lee into that conversation. I'd pay to see that.
That's why Netflix hasn't peaked yet --- get a three-hour roundtable with DLR, Busey, Sheen, and Crispin Glover and it would smash ratings
David Lee would own him.
It was great seeing Dave happy and cutting loose with the stories . Love him .
Eddie must've been a hell of a patient man to spend so much time with this guy.
David was as big a character is rock'n'roll could hold... and then some. His non-stop rap could chew both ears off. I'm sure he drove the band nuts times. But he was a great front man, as wild and crazy as he was... and obviously still is.
Peter7966 exactly what he's role is one of the best leed ,Rocker Should be ,larger than life ,,this guy is on a hole diffrent level of being classic and classey the whole dam package ,peace an love from Australia 🇦🇺❤️🍺🙈🙉🙊
Eddie HAD to be seeing $$ signs to keep up. What do you figure how many times Alex had to pull Eddie off the proverbial edge?
and you wonder why Eddie had a drinking problem !!
@jjthesavage Or vice versa...
Fark, this is good. David is raw and so real.Van halen was a mind expander for a country bumpkin in New Zealand in the 80s
@@spikesya Spot on.
Hes definitely very intelligent..a genuis in a certain respect.
Jaime's crying was my introduction to David Lee & the Van Halen s on a southern California beach in Ventura county the summer of 85 after finishing up the best sophomore year in high school a guy could have. Been rocking to them ever since. Thanks Joe. From Kansas City MO.
"Why is that crazy?"
Joe: shits pants
😂😂😂
"Because you're fucking old!"

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can honestly say that Dave is one of the most interesting guys that I've ever heard speak. He has led an unusual life with many diverse experiences. He is a martial artist, a world traveler, a singer/songwriter, a tattoo enthusiast, and the de facto historian for Van Halen-since Eddie and Alex were never big conversationalists, and Michael seems to be pretty much "in the now" most of the time.
Always loved David Lee Roth. This interview reminds me why he's a rock god!!
There was a song back in 2009 from the band 'the bird and the bee' called Diamond Dave. When you have a mildly popular indie rock sing written exclusively about you, you are probably a rock legend.
Yes and the comments here people are rude
I immediately clicked
Dave is a national treasure
I’m so happy he recognized Michael Anthony vocals!!!
I love how Joe lets his guests speak! That makes for a great interview as opposed to the interviewer who doesn’t get that that they have a legend on their show and they can’t shut up long enough to hear the good stories by guys like DLR!
excellent point. Carson was good at it too. Letterman ran over some of his...maybe he was nervous interviewing Dolly Parton
Without question… one of (if not the best) “front man” of any R&R band ever! A true mensch! Always entertaining, brilliant and unapologetically honest! Certainly miss the old days of VH!
This guy has great energy... I hope he answers all the questions that still remain unanswered from his last appearance.
Dave is the template for “Rock Star” everything he does reinforces his Rockness
Sorry that’s wrong. Elvis
@@RED-bz9hn fuck all of that. Lemmy has that title for eternity.
Cocaine is the "Template" for Daves "Rockness".
@@RED-bz9hn I almost forgot Elvis existed until you mentioned it.
Wow.
When Dave gets intense, you can see how Van Halen came to be. Talent needs drive too.
Baddies & Maddies .... be good or be good at it !!
This is the biggest understatement for Van Halen. If it wasn't for Roth they would never have been as big or as safe without him. He protected the band and he literally is the one who said, let's call it "Van Halen."
@@HunterRouth are you serious?
