I'm not Eddie Van Halen, but I got a similar story. Context: I'm a guitarist plus many other things and I was in a traveling semi professional band during my last few years of college. My 8 year old niece was telling me one day about playing ukulele in her elementary music class and she shared that her music teacher was forcing everyone to play left handed (my niece, like a majority of individuals, is right handed). I, even though it was super ugly sounding, without hesitation, told her that her music teacher's an idiot and to play right handed. Seriously, what kind of music teacher...? idk, man. They're not all competent, as the record shows.
The part where he pulls out the Frankenstrat like it's an old worthless toy! 😬 Now that 'old worthless toy' is a priceless part of American musical history! RIP Eddy.

Oooooh, guess again. Lol Some of them may have been. But, Ed was saying the same thing when he showed a reporter the studio in 2012. By then the tapes were not completely playable. He explained they had to be baked first in order for the adhesive to set back into the tape and make them playable. He doesn't often go "back". He was more interested in writing new music than going back in time. I'd wager most of it is still not catalogued. Still lost treasure on those shelves.
@@bvaladez74 Well, they did pull from that well for A Different Kind of Truth. So, SOME progress had to have been made. But, I agree. Most of those tapes are untouched most likely. And, the ones that were gone through were gone through by Wolf. It's his trove now. Hopefully he does something with it ala the Beatles Anthology. That music should be heard. 🙏🤞
@@e.l.norton Most of the ideas on ADKOT were from the 70's that had already been put together with Dave. Eddie needed other people to help him create actual songs, ie Sam and Dave. There's plenty to gush about Eddie in memoriam but there's probably not much on those tapes except basic ideas.
@@TheDmonet i know. It was a mix of left-overs from the old Dave days and some from the Sammy days. They have rough jams like Sam's first visit to the studio where they improv'd Summer Nights on the spot. And, every record had unused songs on it that are laying around collecting dust. I know those tapes don't have completed songs on them. As a guitarist, I don't care. I'll listen to endless recordings of Ed or Ed and Al, or Ed, Al, Wolf or Mike jamming out ideas. I actually enjoy that more than finished songs. But, should Wolf/they so choose, some of those tapes COULD be turned into finished songs with what's there. Ed left a lot more behind than John Lennon did, and they still got a song out it.
A true artist. Figure your craft out on your own, don't get lost in what others say must be done. To create, invent...go your own way. Eddie, an original, a guitarist who played to his own feedback, thank you for what you gave to us. The adventure you're starting now must be mind blowing.

tonelocrian This is indeed true! Most guitarists who spend all their time taking guitar lessons and watching tutorials on how to play at the speed of light are terribly boring. Great guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, Vini Reilly, David Gilmour, and of course Jimi Hendrix didn't spend their time wasting and their imagination in exchange for guitar lessons because time has always been a precious thing for them to use creating their own sounds and making good music .

The "family" moved out of Pasadena when they could still barely afford it . They really weren't making much money during the majority of the start/Dave era. Like many genius level people, his studio (his home) is a snapshot of the mind, absolutely jammed and chaotic, yet he could probably tell you the where and when about every inch of the place. Have known a few beloved folks like this. They don't let the world consume them. So glad MTV was able to get such an intimate look inside the home and mind of one of our modern day Mozarts. What a treasure Eddie was to the music world, and just a wonderful guy that everyone wanted to be his friend. He was so self aware that the gift of music was not his, but given to him 1:45
"Where do ideas come from? They're just given." - EVH

There's a reason why that person was a music teacher 🤔
A "teacher" is a thing punched out by educational institutions. Ever met a person that was freaking awesome at their job? Not very many.
This makes me so sad. Hearing him talk about his guitar, and then the difference in his voice when he talks about Wolfgang. 😢 RIP, Legend.

This was over 20 years ago. All those tapes would have been catalogued and digitally transferred by now - with backups ; )
Still lost treasure on those shelves.
i have a feeling, he was the same dude til the end and still has that wall of tapes untouched.
Wish this had been an hour long.
