In 1984, Van Halen experienced great success with their album “Diver Down” and a highly successful tour. However, the band members were behind the scenes facing internal tensions and conflicts. The album included cover songs due to time constraints. During this time, Eddie Van Halen connected with Frank Zappa and had a jam session at Zappa’s studio. Eddie also produced a song for Dweezil Zappa. Inspired by their experiences, Eddie and his engineer, Donn Landee, decided to build their own home studio called 5150. The band’s relationships continued to deteriorate, leading to their separation after the Diver Down tour.

Actually Jas Obrecht talking in a recent interview on a podcast mentioned that in 1991 there was a NEW feature installed into 5150 which is missing from these 1980s plan drawings…and can you guess what it was ? …wait for it - a URINAL …lol…Inside the studio. Presumably before that if they had to ‘go’ the band members, producer or engineer had to either run for the house or run for the bushes…..lol

The Diamond Dave era will always be my all-time favorite band. That era has the most rabid and loyal following of any band. It's too bad that Ed, and now Alex and Wolf, have been total pricks to their loyal fans. It pisses me off so bad. I know Alex has to be sitting on some never seen before footage of them in their prime. Say what you want about KISS and Gene Simmons, but at least they care about their fans who put them in fat city addresses. KISS has so many pro-shot videos of them in their prime and we have NONE! 😡

:00 I understand that portions were removed per Alex Van Halen's/Warner's request. Copyright law is there to protect publishing and songwriter royalties, of course. HOWEVER, in a case like this, this wonderful project helps prolong the LEGACY of the band, regardless of the law. The law itself will NOT help bring in new monies ( just ask the Zappa and Nelson families after their famous family members passed away and were almost forgotten about ).
The band will only encounter massive problems without licensing their music for future generations.
This is an outstanding set of videos. Nicely done! But Warners/Alex ( along with more than a few record company executives ) need to rethink their " strategies. "

We shot the video, very home made looking like the Pretty Woman one, and once it was edited, we found we needed more music so we came up with an instrumental rampage tacked on the end instead of the beginning. Glad to see this back up Alan. In my comment when you first published it I said I hoped the VH camp would get in touch and commission you to make more. I really don't understand why AVH has not reacted in the same way as DLR; as Dave said in one of his solo songs 'there ain't much difference between a pat on the back, and a kick in the pants'. Especially as you have made it very clear that you don't want to profit from it. And let's not ignore the irony that you have been prevented from using someone else's music in your production by a band that in the early days were effectively a cover band playing other people's songs and making money from it. Anyway, I am a massive VH fan, and I can only say once again that I love it that you are doing this - I hope the hassle you have had to endure doesn't stop you from doing more. I get it if a band puts a new album out and some jerk sticks it up here immediately. That's tens of thousands (or more) unsold/streamed copies, directly depriving the band of income. But, something like this that is a homage to a band is very different. It increases/maintains awareness of the band, leading to continued sales/streams. Very short-sighted of Alex.

0:43 this is technically wrong. The first use of keyboards on a Van Halen album was actually Van Halen I, which was a piano key sweep in the beginning of Runnin' with the Devil. While you may be using the term "keyboards" to refer to synthesized music only, its important to point out that a piano keyboard is in fact a keyboard instrument.

Great documentary! I am one of the few that feels musicians did get the proverbial wrench in the gears when file sharing and Napster came about. I believe its the reason there are far fewer albums made today. Artist need to be contantly on tour to make the lions share of their money. It's better to be on tour playing the same stuff for ticket sales, than to be making new music to be practically given away. Artust do need to write and record songs fans will want to hear, but certainly there is a lack of good music presently because I feel bands/artists aren't putting out the amount of albums they did in the 80's and 90's.

Lol.. Never heard of a UREI console. But I had an original M56 16tk.. The thing was a tank and interestinly it was also a big piece of Pete Townsend's studio on his river barge!
The outboard gear is OK.. Though it's missing a Lexicon 224 or 224X reverb. I assume this was pre AMX so that explains thst. But I'm struck by how similar this was to a 1980 esk 24tk studio I built in our loft in down town Boston. Biggest difference being a Sony console and 24tk. Even had a matched pair of rare U48s that ended up being sold to Beatle Paul.

Ironic side note: So after the go ahead was given in the 70s to strart producing the TV show The Bionic Woman that would make Lindsey Wagner a star, scouts were sent out to look for filming locations in LA. One person found the perfect location for a house that looks like a palace that would be owned by a wealthy sheek. They were allowed in and were talking with the owner over the details of the plans to use it. While that was going on the scout could hear a ruckus going on in the basement. Shortly the noise stops and out from the basement comes a young man who immediately 2 young guys sit down in the living room and eats a big bowls of cereal. The kid was David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen and the band practicing was obviously Van Halen. They were practicing in Davids dads house. It was used in the 1st season. 😂 For the record i heard this story in a 6 million dollar man podcast by the guy who scouted the house.
