God bless your soul Eddie Van Halen. You are deeply missed.
I remember watching this when it came out and I was like. Whoa there he is. The man himself. And now hes gone. Sucks man. Rest in peace Eddie.
He hoped this guitar outlived him and he got what he wanted. RIP EVH. Fretgod, virtuoso Mastermind.
This man will absolutely be missed 😞💔
So devastated. Soundtrack to my life.
@another pizza Who are you talking to? I love Eddie and this comment was heartfelt.
@another pizza you do know that evh passed... ...right?
@another pizza Just be quiet and let people mourn how they want. No one cares about your hatred of society, clown.
“The Wolfgang better outlive me...” shivers.
Definitely hard to not get emotional when he says that
5:55 "...the Wolfgang better outlive me..." the prophecy has been fulfilled. Rest in peace. I never knew you, but your music has had such an impact on my life that I feel as if you are a friend. I will be listening to Van Halen until my number's up. There's no other musician alive or dead who has change the world quite like you did Eddie.
Ed coming up on 2 years ago. I just bought a Wolfgang yesterday. He got his wish, heck of a player, heck of a guitar. He left something behind in this world that no other guitarist ever will.
@@wildspowell196 I was in my local Guitar Center today and they have the replica FrankenStrat that Fender made a limited run of. It has everything, the dummy neck pickup, the single volume knob labeled tone, the quarter under the Floyd Rose, etc. I want it sooo bad. They also have a Stealth in the toothpaste green with maple neck. All so good to look at! Congrats on your purchase, do Eddie proud!
I had a aqua music man EVH from Guitar center in LA and a Red one as well as a purple one . I loved the Music man guitars , was skeptical about the Peavey ones . Eddie lives on 🙏
RIP evh you're definitely missed.
The man takes quality to heart so important to care like he demonstrates it. Who else does this to have a product with his and his family's name on it? Corporate executives take notice. This is what quality truly is in a product. RIP Eddie thank you for your presence, performance, and wisdom.
@Anne O'Nymous that's how it usually goes. Someone's bonus is more important than quality.
The best there ever was. God bless the Wolf, Alex and everyone close. I dont like to say I have heros but Ed was one.
At all American guitar shredding he was. He was also VERY mean spirited. In the last two days I learned about his treatment of Micheal Anthony and the way Micheal was so damn classy in response. Did you know that Ed showed Micheal how to play bass? Never mind that Micheal was already good enough to be asked to join after his band played with Van Halen at a school gym. Eddie could have been a cool dude, he was not. Did you know that when Eddie had that bandanna on his head he was on drugs with sunken cheeks and insane? Too bad he was so messed up as a person. Sammy reached out to them several times with zero response. Van Halen bros are bad blood and now it is history that cannot be patched up like Dave, Sammy and Micheal all tried to do.
Well said!!
@@hyperluminalreality1 as awful as that all was, you have to remember that because Eddie was the frontman for Van Halen, he had immense pressure on him at all times. From what I know Eddie only ever did drugs as a way to focus due to major anxiety he had growing up, and would only ever drink really before concerts to relieve his nerves. Eddie was a man tortured by drug addiction and substance abuse from the moment he set foot on stage until the day he died.
Some people may think that its ugly, but I'm here to tell you that it not only sounds great, it is one of the easiest guitars that I have EVER played. Everything is top notch. Everything that EVH has learned over the years went into this guitar. They did a great job!
+resqfireman1 interesting I was thinking of the same I mean he should have gone along the lines of what James Headfield did on his the sleek look....
I still think the Wolfgangs are a bit unshapely, but I agree with you on the playability side. Those things are fucking monsters.
oh dear god you bought a "rock stars kid's sig guitar". be fucking serious man
Wolfgang has grown on me and I currently have one. I thought they were sorta fugly back in the day.
Its a marketting gimmick. He named it after wolfgang.. i have no words. It's pickups are wider than normal. But lets be serious.. Eddy still plays a superstrat. Hell the only reason he doesnt play factory Jem's is he has a contract. If jems had existed when he was a teen he wouldnt play anything without ibanez on the headstock
Legends ,trailblazers, uniqueness, unorthodox. Makes for greatness. He never went bye the books. Did his own thing. Which made him an inventor. Special.
The Wolfgang will indeed live on.
He was still smoking back then. Wish he would have stopped.
Smoking really affected his voice. So sad.
In later interviews like 2015ish he started vaping, but unless you go cold turkey you never really quit and there are occasions you lit up the up cigarettes.
MP 81,16,18 CATS Im a diehard EVH fan, and although that’s possible, it’s highly unlikely. Dude was a chainsmoker since his 20’s.
@MP 81,16,18 CATS The day that he died, my lead guitarist that totally idolizes Eddie was saying that exact same thing....
I'm far from a doctor... but ... I'd hate to say this but I will..
Smoking imo is the reason that the best guitarist was taken from us way too early..
But what would I know ??? Hearing the news of his passing was the saddest start to my morning since I can remember..
He had a HUGE influence to my life. Probably the biggest because, of the people that I met because of his playing and also what he meant to Pantera. I have a friend that went to 5150 and interviewed him and he had the time of his life meeting Eddie. Check out Jason McNamara's channel of the same name to watch it. Great video...
I bought a 5150 III amp a few years ago and I love it. He saved Hard Rock & Metal for many decades I think.. Still does to this day
RIP Eddie Van Halen.........................................
Yeah, I loved Eddie Van Halen the guitar God, hated EVH the smoker. #RIP
Have to say after playing the EVH Wolfgang for almost a year its the guitar I always come back to. Its smaller in stature than most, but the neck is sublime and is extremely fast. Packs power and has so much punch!!! Great guitar!!!
i love the way eddy talks about making the guitar talk and like its an actual person... he so intimate with it
Great to watch this interview again. So much love and devotion went into those guitars and amps. Blessings and Thanks Eddie for all the amazing music...
"It has to last forever, like a stradivarious". Brilliant attitude by the guitar legend.
RIP Eddie. Seriously tho, every professional guitar player I know LOVES the Wolfgang. They swear by it every night!
They’re right to love it. It’s an amazing instrument.
This video after lots of research to understand the EVH guitars, literally was the final factor in me buying one. Sure it’s an old video but hearing the effort that goes into the fine tuning of it and his enthusiasm sold me. Not because he’s a salesman for it but it was his guitarist and perfectionist ways that sold it.
UPS should be here within 20 minutes.
I got one last week as well ! I have had many guitars over the last 37 years and none were better than this.
@@humbug4478 OMG tell me about it! I have never played anything like it! That tone is insane! Even when you turn the volume down, you still keep the gain and get a cleaner sound. I don’t know how the heck he did it. I don’t have a 5150 amp and I heard plugging the EVH directly into the 5150 with no pedals is when you’ll really hear the beauty of the guitar. So I bought a Mooer GE150 amp modeler pedal that has the peavey 5150 version and the EVH 5150 amps. The pedal apparently is almost perfect emulating the real sound. So being inexpensive I figured what the heck. I bypassed my Boss ME80 and went straight into the amp pedal and wore headphones to test the sound. WOW! It has flange, phaser, delay effects etc built in like the real amp and omg it blows my mind and it’s not even a real 5150!
Anyway, I got overjoyed there. Sorry about that but let me know what you think of it as you experiment more.
I think this interview clearly demonstrates ed's sheer genius in the mechanics of self taught guitar building.....no ego...just awesome. (It shows just how much raw talent this gentle soul of a man has.)
Chip... what can I say.... beautiful design and amazing detail and craftsmanship.
All the best to Ed and Chip and Guitar world.
Thanks ....all the best...god bless.
Mike.
The reference to "plugging straight in" is referring to not using an overdrive pedal. Obviously he has delays and has used harmonizers after the amp.
he's fucking lying. Overdrive... you get that from a GOOD amp. IT doesnt need a pedal. Distortion, compression, delay etc.. ALL of which he fucking uses.. you get from pedals
What the hell does it matter if the circuit is in the amp or in a pedal?
5150 has like 5 channels with 100 pedals-worth of electronics.
It's all just BS.
Amps, pedals, even guitar... it's all electronics.
If it sounds good, it's good. That's all that matters.
Is it just me or does Eddie sound like George Carlin?
lol he does sound like George Carlin
Midnights & Mornings..GOD has had a significant part of his tongue removed cancer I believe and yeah his speech has changed obviously. He has stated that the medical advice he received as to 'why' his condition started was probably due to his continuing endless use of putting metal picks in his mouth but Ed's said he's not 100 per cent certain, but again his voice has noticeably changed but who GAF the man is a fucking genius.
For one, his first language is not English, so he has a bit of an accent. Second, he had part of his tongue removed due to cancer.
Years of smoking.
He shares the same birthday oddly
Thanks to Guitar World for posting this, rest in peace Eddie, you were one hell of a guitarist & songwriter. 🎸
Just bought an EVH in memorial to him being my first influence...and all I can say is I wish I bought one sooner. Plays and sounds stellar. You've contributed so much in so many ways. Thank you Eddie, we love you and you are irreplaceable.
Miss Eddie, we all miss you.
He knows his shit!
Rest in Peace, Eddie. You were remarkable.
Miss not only his music but can you imagine what kind of guitars he would come up with in years come.I have the evh standard and love it. Miss you Brother
God Bless Eddie - As a kid of the 80's and 90's his guitar literally flowed through me as my mind developed. He will be a part of me forever. Thank you.
Chip gave me a tour of that room. I saw that bench they filmed this on.Was amazing!!!
Johnny Beane the bench eh? Wow you don't get out much do you?
Did you have a special moment with Chip on that bench?
The first record have the ultimate Eddie-sound...the brown sound, Marhall plexi and ed*s fingers
I'm the same age. Just last year I lost a long time friend to cancer who could never quit smoking. Back in the 70's Yule Brenner who was dying did a commercial where he pleaded with people not to smoke. As powerful as that commercial was it wasn't as powerful as a smoking addiction. RIP.
Cigarettes should be outlawed!!! Everyone is so wrapped up in politics and Covid that we've forgotten the real enemy of the world. :( Far more die each year from cancer from cigarette smoking than Covid will ever cause!!
@@phillyman5000Can we outlaw all internal combustion engines, too. Since you brought it up, that would save a lot of lives...😊
Eddie Van Halen !
Enjoyed the interview with Guitar World Magazine
Thanks for sharing the video
John
Yes he is , I miss him so bad I can't take it , I love Eddie Van Halen & Van Halen as well , my Prayers & condolences & love to him , his family , friends & his band mates & all who love him , I love all musicians , love you Eddie , Rock In Paradise love 💔💔💔💔💔😔😢😭😭💚💜💙💛🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤘🙋😧
At the end the one guy says "there's nothing left to do on it..." in reference to the guitar . . . Well I came to the video hoping I'd see Eddie play it . . .
I'm smashing the like button for all Edward Van Halen videos, it doesn't matter if he's speaking or playing guitar, gonna miss him rip.
"it better outlive me" and that it did, rest in peace, you will never be forgotten
You inspired to me to play guitar and practice everyday. Keep on rockin up in Heaven!
That tone is amazing! Goosebumps........EVH is God
Great that he was so hands on (pun intended) with redesigning the Wolfgang. Not only did he reinvent playing the instrument, he served as an advocate for making it road-proof and more convenient to physically play it. Rest in Power, dude.
a evh guitar thats my dream guitar was always the striped series frankie for my love of ed n van halen or the 5150 evh.. but after hearing ed talk about this guitar how much work he put into designing it and when he said "this better out live me" he meant like the gibson les paul still around today... THATS what he looks at this as not just a one off addition to the EVH lineup no this is THE EvH lineup the same way gibson has les pauls sgs 335s but the les paul is IT fender has strats teles jaguars, mustangs, jazzmasters all awesome but the STRAT is the guitar... EvH has striped series,5150s, but the Wolfgang is THE guitar!!! , thats what i learnt from ed in this video... god rest your soul edward, and im rocking out to Mammoth WVH that kid is so talented and bringing back rock music to the MASSES! pop and hip-hop cannot kill rock aslong as wolfies rocking and the rest of us guitarists to!!!
what was that noise at 4:43? is he part demon?
batz capo it sounded like a muffled burp.
todd shaw It was either a burp or a light grunt
Luuuul
Throat cancer.
No,but he is GOD.
GOD BLESS EDDY FINGERS SIX STRING WE WILL MISS YOU.
Ok, I don’t know if this is going to work but I will try every social media platform until I get it right. I have been with my fiancé for 8 years. We’ve definitely had our fair share of ups, downs, good, bad and ugly. His name is Josh A. Mullins and he has been in love with playing the guitar since he was 11 years old. The man who started his musical dream was your dad!! Over the years he’s had a Wolfgang guitar, a 5150 amp, and many many musicians song books. Your dad was his absolute hero growing up and the two of you still .Over the course of the past 5 years we have struggled severely, he has taken care of me and my 14 year old son like his own. He has voluntarily given up all his EVH music equipment and memorabilia over the last 5 years to do this. Absolutely devastated, he never said a word. I am trying to give him the perfect thank you for everything. An autograph, snap, etc, from his hero’s. I will find a Wolfgang/ Frankenstrat for him or die trying. Ty, Shauna Bailey 🎸
Buy one. Play it. You will fall in love with the EVH guitars. These guitars are amazing and will last a lifetime. RIP GOAT Edward Van Halen.
R.I.P. KING EDWARD 🎸🤘
Wolfgangs designs are a perfect mix of details from Teles, Les Pauls and Strats
...
Hey Ed, thanks for all the great years and fantastic music dude. Much love.
I had no idea that I wouldn't be able to stop watching eddie videos. I didn't know van halens death would hurt this much, and I never even met him. He's loved by millions.
What is with all of the Eddie bashers? What have you assholes ever done? This man is a fucking legend! He's the Elvis of guitar, guitar sound and guitar innovations. Get a life.
Couldn't have said it better! Although to be fair, Junior High can scar a lot of weak people 😅😅😅😅.
I want one.
Stainless steel frets are incredible, they just make the guitar scream, so smooth as well
I went to the hollywood guitar center yesterday and they have the platinum room of evh with 4 5150 III full stacks and about 7 wolfgangs. I tried them and they are the best combination that I've ever played. If I could buy it I would.
RIP, EVH!
Eddie is the guy on guitars, period.
Anyone who does not agree is simply out of it.
used to be. His frankenstrat is the shit. his techniques are the shit. Now he's just an old douchebag hated by his bandmates selling garbage with his son's name(????????????????) on it.
I love EVH. What a phenomenal guitar player. R.I.P. = Legend 10/6/2020 - your music and influence will live-on forever.
GOD BLESS YOU & PROTECT YOU EDWARD VAN HALEN.
Groeten uit A'dam XXX
Who needs a stinkin' tone knob anyway? Love the simplicity of these guitars.
When u can play guitar like Eddie you can stroke ya own ego
Yup, and until then, you can simply stroke ya own...
I came here after I just purchased a Wolfgang guitar today on 12/26/22….. it’s my first Floyd Rose and Eddie was the reason I even know about a Floyd Rose system…… Thank you EVH 🙏🏾
eddie will never die.. his soul will live on for years to come, this guys a genuis! ive played a wolfgang and i have to say its the finest piece of art ive ever been beholden of playing and touching.
It's done. The Book of the Rock Guitar in the world is CLOSED. There's nothing to write anymore. Rest In Peace Edward Van Halen.
So we should all stop trying to innovate? People said that about Hendrix when he died too. Welcome to the world...please drive thru.

@@hyperluminalreality1 nothing more to do that can't be done with digital effects
Eddie is an amazing guitarist and honest man.
I don't know about honest
Sutty, Ed is one of my favorite guitarists ,and a huge inspiration to me as a guitarist. But he tells peole all kinds of bullshit..not honest..to keep his little secrets so people won`t copy EVERY single thing that he does. Their are a million EVH clones out there, and I am sure he is sick of it, even though it strokes his ego. And he has a HUGE ego, I don`t give a fuck what anyone says, about him being humble and honest . He is NOT humble at all. If you dont agree with him and Alex, your ass is fired. Ask Michael Anthony. What they did to him was cruel and totally uncalled for. Wake up my friend. You must be a young man, at least that is the feeling I get. I grew up with VH when they were at their very best. The Fair Warning tour was an unbelievable show!!! 1981, Madison Square Garden ,N.Y.C. Ed was on fucking FIRE!! Diver Down and 1984 were lame, as you could see they were not totally in to it,DLR was about to quit.
Can't wait to pick mine up in November!! R.I.P Ed
It’s never fails to amaze me when you see a genius who is a focused on their discipline, they never get bored with that passion. I’ve watched Eddie interviews for years and when it’s about a guitar he is laser beam focused, other subjects with the exception of his family and to a lesser extent Italian sports cars he isn’t as focused.
Damn i wish Eddie didn't smoked too much... Then we all wouldn't be hurting so much too
RIP Eddie 😢😭
his words are so simple yet so meaningful. genius.
When he said paraphrase "Wolfgang better outlive me. Period. My sons names on it, it better last forever, it's thirty five or forty years and I'm proud of it" So amazing.
Heartbreaking that all his talent and experience is gone forever!
True, but his talent and impression he left on us all will never go away!! Generations of guitar players will always admire him and never forget him!!
@@phillyman5000 well stated Ira...we’ll stated
Smoke em if ya got em'
Unchained!
So many years later, it's still a classic
The man was an utter genius. As a former smoker myself, I hate to see him smoking here. May his artistry live on- truly a player for the ages.
Eddie sounds like Charlie Sheen in those Winning days and funny thing Eddie was in Two and Half Men episode with Charlie lol
He may not use distortion pedals now, but back in the first three albums I know he used a Boss DS-1. I have seen pictures of his rig and there is one of those puppies sitting right there. Also, if you go to GuitarGeek and look up his rig, you will see his signal chain with a DS-1 in there.
You sure you aren't thinking of his orange MXR Phase 90?
and a flanger pedal
It’s really amazing how Ed recorded the first album in Sept 77 well before the first Boss DS-1 was released and sold in 1978. Do you know what model time machine he used too? Thanks Trollie!
I enjoyed playing this guitar at the store. I was tripped up at the switch being upside down. Then I remember they want it that way. The bridge is great. That tremolo arm and the dives are very smooth more so than my orig Floyd rose. It must be the springs. I like it. Don't know if If pay a huge amount for them.
Wish I was their sitting next to him asking him questions and just listening. Miss you Eddie 🤘
If its good enough for Edward its good enough for me!
Sales tactics bud
I am sad to see him go. No doubt Eddie used effects, compression, echo, etc.
I was thinking the same because. U can hear phaser compressor etc
It goes without saying. He was famous for using the original MXR Phase 90, MXR Flanger and the Echoplex. Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble. A compressor? No. A compressor is generally used for clean, single coil, tones. You get compression from distortion and overdrive.
This is the most articulate I’ve ever heard him speak. As defined and crisp as he plays.
Loving the new guitar !!
Eddie Van Halen is still a guitar hero , thanks for sharing guitar world magazine
Just the guitar straight into the amp? And what about his Flanger,faser,delay,..........
if you can't keep up and understand what he is talking about you should be less snarky. they were on the subject of DISTORTION PEDALS. DIS. TOR. TION. he was referring to not having any distortion pedals in his rig. obviously he has effect pedals, but he doesn't use DISTORTION PEDALS. hope that cleared it up for you.
rofl waffle: Not according to this list here.
www.uberproaudio.com/who-plays-what/93-eddie-van-halens-guitar-gear-rig-and-equipment
SYLFan2008 nice try. anybody could have made that list. even if he does use an overdrive pedal, it isn't specifically called a distortion pedal. i don't buy it.
rofl waffle :
//nice try. anybody could have made that list.//
Uberproaudio.com is not "anybody." Plus,
I'm the one with the evidence here, mate.
If the link is wrongly stating facts, then maybe EVH should sue them (or already have sued them) for misrepresenting facts, shouldn't he?
//if he does use an overdrive pedal, it isn't specifically called a distortion pedal//
Yes, he doesn't use a pedal that says "Distortion" on it, but he uses a pedal to generate the "warm distortion tones" (actual product description).
Lastly...relax. I like EVH too and he is a great guitar player, but he is trying to sell his product here and is clearly embellishing. You don't have to take this personally.
SYLFan2008 i know even an overdrive pedal distorts the tone, thus can be designated a distortion pedal, but in pedal classification a distortion pedal is heavier than an overdrive pedal. they both distort the tone, yes, but overdrive and distortion are 2 different things in this case.
Who needs a distortion pedal when your amp has 80 dials on it?
Noah Siañez he plays high gain amps. So he doesn't really need a distortion pedal
he doesnt do digital but youre completely correct. They use STACKS of marshalls, some custom made. Probably 100k just in amps and a $100k a year tech who does nothing but work on them. But.. he also uses other pedals. hes fucking lying for money
cdreid99999 Eddie would wipe his ass with money. But at least he’s quiet about it and dosen’t rub it in. Also looks homeless.
After 30 years of playing, I am still inspired every time I hear him play. The man is a guitar savant.
I wish this was longer. I could listen to Eddie talk about guitars and amps for hours.
I heard they've found Blood in Eddie's Nicotine-Stream.
Yes there was a small trace of blood but it was diluted with alcohol.
@Justin Ford Randy's autopsy showed early signs of emphysema. Only 25 years old.
He sounds like marge simpson
haha, he does!!
he sounds like he smokes cigarettes all day
didn't he have a run in with cancer in the late 90s-early 00s? albeit in the early stages...right? if so then that is why he sounds as such.
Patty & Selma
jhacobla1 it's after he had throat and tongue surgery from cancer. They took a third of his tongue out. He doesn't sound like that anymore.
@ThieleM i noticed that too man, you have to really watch the gain and mids with it but beyond that it's nothing short of amazing
I bought a evh wolfgang special guitar in 1999 or 2000, and its simply the best guitar I have ever played. It still plays great after 9 years of abuse. Origional frets too, still in great shape.
Floyd rose that does not float.
Best idea ever Eddie. Smoke less, think more.
Personally I prefer Floyds not to float. If you break a string you don't have to switch out guitars.
trem stabilizer
Blocked against the trem route or a piece of wood
I argued with some dumbass about that.He said it was a lie because it had a double locking nut.
Something about this interview reminds me of charlie sheen
How a deep, low and raw voice like this can go out of a such little man!??!
What a wonderful tribute to his son!! Damn I miss Eddie!!! Saw the real VH in 1982 (yes, showing my age, 61) with David Lee. Was an awesome show and Eddie played a solo for at least 30-45 minutes and everyone in the audience jaws dropped!! Just amazing!! David Lee was ok but he talked and goofed around alot which was ok for the first 5 minutes but after awhile it was annoying. But David is David and when he was on, he was awesome!!
The band was tight and alot of improve went on but the songs were pretty much note for note. I remember they played for over 2 to 2.5 hours which was a long concert for that time in 1982, but no one dared leave!! Was one of the best shows I ever saw and will remember always! Thank you VH and especially to you Eddie, for making music come alive again and being a true pioneer of the guitar!!! :) Such an exciting night that was!!!!
...Eddie sounds like Frakenstein lol..
Why no high quality option?
That idea is also dead
“It better out last me”. It did Eddie, it will, your a legend
I'd love to play one.
Nicotine is such a strong addiction. It takes over your mind really. Ed had part of his tongue cut out and he is still smoking. It is because he can't stop, it is too hard for him. I know he says that the cancer had nothing to do with smoking, I find that hard to believe.
He vapes now
Kryptönïtë Scï Fï Sïnïstër somehow hes smoked for prob 30+ years and hasn’t apparently got cancer
I heard Eddie in an interview. Saying his tounge Cancer was from a metal pick he held between his teeth in his 5150 studio for years and the cause was E. M. F . In the studio. I'm no doctor so I have no idea .except that s what King Edward Said. FYI he started a cancer research facility in NYC with the doctors who helped his cancer.
I don't know why hes bsing about pedals when he is extremely well known for his use of pedals....
SRNF He's known for using pedals, but he's also known for using them sparingly, for little accents here and there. Especially in the early days. Look at his early, duct taped board. There's a phase 90 for solos, a flanger, and the echo plex. That's about it. He was never pedal crazy. In the later years, when his tone changed, he began using digital delays and a harmonizer to fatten his sound. But, those have been gone for a long time. He's back almost exclusively to a few simple pedals, the Phase 90 being the one used most often for solos.
I think he meant distortion pedals.
He's really quite an amazing fellow. Kudos.
I loved he goes barebone on wolfgang. Truly genius. I miss you eddie
