Mr Van Halen left a very special mark on me when he indirectly inspired me to build guitars. I had a hard time getting what I wanted out of store bought instruments, when Mr Eddie did a video on guitar making and how he had the same problem. After his motivation, I learned how to do it, and since I have made several guitars, and exactly what I wanted. I make sure I give Mr Eddie credit for changing my life in more than just his awesome guitar playing. I'll never forget him, and hope someday to cross spirits with him.

That struck me too. It drives me crazy because its misleading. He had studied proper music extensively, before he became the "just a punk kid who plays guitar" ..and revolutionized the instrument both from a technique AND from an equipment perspective. Young people need to understand that you dont get born great. It's really not a casual thing to become that good. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work before you can be at the top and say casually "I'm just a punk kid who plays guitar"

I've been thinking the same, somewhat knowing what's it's like, having lost my younger brother to cancer last year, and we were both in construction. I was 12 when he was born in 76, and my parents allowed me to name him Gregory. I found one of his first paystubs when he came to work for me right out of high school. He went on to do his own thing, so we weren't nearly as close as Eddie & Alex, but for a long time I would forget that I couldn't call him any more when I wanted to talk shop. The hardest thing I had to do was go get his trailer of tools and bring them from his job to his house, then go through and sell a lot of his stuff. So I can imagine what Alex is, and will be, going through. Probably a big reason why I've been watching so many VH vids the last few days, and why it hit me extra hard.

You are absolutely right that Rhoads was a true phenom and, for a brief time, the two of them were contemporaries and both extraordinary.
Rhoads was one of the few guitar gods who died so young due to someone else's reckless and senseless hubris, and that may be the biggest tragedy of them all. I think I was 14 at the time and even I couldn't believe how stupid that bus driver was (and when a 14-year-old thinks someone is reckless and foolish that's pretty sad because they don't really get consequences for action yet at that stage of neurodevelopment).

I always wrestled with deciding who my favourite rock and roll band was. These boys are amongst the elite. When my son came up and told me that Eddie had passed away it stung me pretty good. I am now fully aware that Van Halen is and always will be my favourite. I like to think mr. Van Halen is wherever he is sitting next to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan right now telling stories and hammering out some riffs.😥

Van Halen story. Driving to work at 6am (nurse) kdkb has am trivia. I called in and won the trivia ( what does everyone that work shift does) of course the answer is gain weight. So I went to the radio station to pick up a cd. Of course I got a best of VH cd. Played it nonstop
