A pretty good example of exactly how good they were and they really weren't that old. They had a machine gun drummer, a solid basist who could back up the vocals, an outrageous front man who didn't even have to sing that well to be a success, and of course the greatest living guitarist in the world.
@@robertschiffhauer1679 I've read so many things about the greatest guitarist in the world that I quit listening to them. Jimmy Page brought a lot to the table, but so did Jimi Hendrix, Chuck, Berry, etc. All of them have one thing in common, that they all did something unique. Personally, Clapton is the most overlooked one.
Just close your eyes for a few minutes & this takes you back to the good old times back in high school. I could just envision every VH concert I went to & this band was the ultimate party band back in the day! Good times man…..
There will never be a any band like this again! Energy, humor, great songs, the best showman in rock a d the greatest rock guitarist....this was The Greatest Show on Earth....the original Van Halen!!!!!!!!!!
I love Ed's chord work. Always so full and meaningful. You can get a lot of guys that can rip scales but not many who can make music combining chords and scale single notes.
Exactly. Today's shredders are faster, more proficient, but can't hold a candle to Eddie's rhythm and music writing ability. Only second to hendrix because he was born later.
This band rocked it when I saw them live! I’ve seen a ton of bands but I left there saying that was the best and they were ! This is rock they are part of my life! Thanks for the live and memories ❤❤❤❤
The haters don't have a problem with DLR in 1978-'84. But, I dropped an INSANE amount of money to see the "reunion" in L.A. when I still lived out there, and it was a giant pile of dog-sh!t. Between, DLR not singing a note (literally), and Eddie being so drunk, he didn't know what song he was playing, not to mention Wolfie on bass. I don't have a big problem with Wolfie, but he ain't Michael. It was no more of a reunion than it was a legitimate concert. So, the criticism the last 10yrs of the band was absolutely warranted. That said, no one...and I mean NO ONE could touch this band during these years. A lot of people don't realize that early KISS put on a show with this much drive and energy, as well. But, those days are all but forgotten because of the sh*t-show that band is today. But, I digress...
What memories for those of us who grew up when these guys exploded. World was such a different place. Told to get out of the house unless it was raining and “go outside.” No one asked where you were going, just be home by dinner. No cell phones. No woke bullshit. Memories were made…friends won and lost….feelings hurt and backbones strengthened….and music like this!
I saw them open for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour. Friends who didn't go would ask "How was Sabbath?" and I'd reply "good, but the opening band Van Halen was amazing!". This tour was probably the most fun I have ever had at a concert....
I saw this DIVER DOWN Tour and it was AWESOME!! He wore the stripes that year. Man those shows I can still remember them like they were yesterday. One of the greatset preforming bands ever.
@@stefanstrittmatter6459 they aren’t overlooked by anyone, its apparently a new trend for people to say dumb shit about someone or something thats always been widely acknowledged and highly regarded and act like its underrated
The very beginning shows two brothers that grew up playing together. They are so tight. And it's been a little while since Eddie's passing and I understand that people feel so close to him without really knowing him. Eddie was our American guitar hero. Van Halen meant alot to us. Eddie's sonic boom and sending us to a different dimension thru a potal in time that's why people were so upset when the break-up happened with Dave. Thanks for Sammy picking up the torch and helping to carry the Van Halen legacy to it's end.
You could always tell it was Van Halen with Eddie and Alexs snare hits. Listen to that snare crack. Eddie and Alex were always in sync just amazing connection between two brothers with great musical talent. Not to discount Michaels bass playing and backing vocals and of course greatest frontman with his howls and primal screams. This boys and girls is Van Halen. My favorite band of all time.
Eddie Van Halen did not pass away, he just moved to Venus where it always rains metal 🤘🤘. But seriously, thank you so much, Sir Edward Van Halen, for the music you gave us and for being the legend that you were and forever will be. Your spirit will live on through your son and music. There WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER. Rest easy, kind sir. I love you man. God bless
Never again will the radio ,records, and concerts be this good. It's another phase of the pop culture evolution now. The soul is sold, the rock is rolled, and here we are just gettin' old.
Missed the first tour but saw the remaining tours with DLR, eddie gave me a Schlitz Malt liquer tall boy. Leaning on the stage for all shows, this band is incredible, will never be another like this. Every second of their shows were amazing. Simply the best of the best.
This made my day for sure 🤩! Eddie never failed, but the rythm section is outstanding as well as the backing vocals, not to mention DLR pants (and great vocal performance here). Happy to hear VH IV songs, the bass playing on So this is love and Unchained is terrific 👍
There's nothing like the anticipation of an Eddie Van Halen solo! Unlike many of the guys that are compared to him, Eddie played by the seat of his pants and refused to play the same "Canned" guitar solo from his records every night. RIP KIng Edward👑🎸
@@infiniteuniverse9528 the fact that Extreme started just when Grunge was coming in had nothing to do with it either did it. Eddie's solos were starting to get stale. Nuno is just getting better and better.

@@morbidmanmusic I'd never trade it. To be a teen again would mean that I never lived through the 70's and the 80's. Those two decades were way, way more fun than anything we see today. Better music, hotter women and everyone was way more upbeat and enthusiastic. Everything from the 90's onward has totally sucked.
The magic and unique sound of this band will never be forgotten, van halen and and van Hagar, wow 20 years of magnificent creativity, thank you so much !
They were in a jam segment of Cream's "I'm So Glad" but anyone can see Roth's wicked genius spontaneity even today in interviews. Like him or not (I always have) he's a force of nature. EVH, AVH and Mike were gladiators that night. I saw them in 1980 and 1982. Sort of sloppy at times then, but it was their rocket ship you hopped on and had their blast with them!
Eddie was my drive to learn how to play guitar. His rhythm and timing is what blew me away... his song writing too! Great original band!! It was almost like a different band with Sammy ... tighter and more pro like but I did love this original stuff the best.
I just heard Eddie's first interview, and, it's unreal how good Eddie was. he played guitar for about 8 years when he recorded the debut album, which mostly was recorded live inside the studio. he used tube amps and pushed them to the edge, with modified input voltage. and after a maximum of 10 hrs, the amps gave up. the tubes had to be changed. but he kept on doing that because nothing sounded like it. one of the reasons for his unbelievable sound on the first album. the 2nd album it sounds a bit different but still out of this world. Eddie's impact on music history and rock guitar playing is unmatched. all of the other great guitar players who came after Eddie are there because Eddie started it. The God of the guitar. It's not about dumb speed anymore, it is about how you play your notes. and nobody plays as ass-kicking as Eddie did.
@@nodaysback8390 That makes no sense. A mistake is a mistake, live or studio. No rock star plays perfectly. They don't even try. But it's still a mistake.
Maybe the greatest live footage of any band in history. If there is something else out there by ANYONE that tops this, please reply and let me know. These guys were such a visual act, I can't imagine that they don't have tons of footage sitting around, even going back to the backyard party/nightclub era.
there is actually very little live video (but LOTS of soundboard audio) that exists from those early days; primarily due to the fact that their road manager at the time was extremely protective of them and would deal very severely with anyone that attempted to film them then (pre-cellphone era)...quite a shame in retrospect; i was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times during that period though 😎

I was fortunate enough to work security on the 1984 tour...what a visual and aural experience! A moment in time that will never be duplicated 👍👍
I was at the L.A. Forum for that tour!
My first concert ever was 1984. I was only in 6th grade.
Fantastic! You should maybe post a blog online detailing your experiences.
Take care.
🎸🙋♀️So cool you got to do that.
it really was...wish I'd had taken photos but even disposable cameras were kinda pricy then🤷♂ @@marlahart2060
You know what made VH great!?
Everyone in the band, and fans
So awesome to see all of this footage in such high quality. Rock history in the making.
Eddie and Alex the best ever. Nothing beats a family vibe like this. Just magical.
When the 2 of you are killing each other the other half the time, yeah it's great.
I speak from experience..
Brings back such great memories of hearing these guys for the first time in the 70's and buying all their albums and cassette's up to 1984. Just pure raw rock and roll , definitely the best years of VH!!!
Agree.Dont forget Michael Anthonys backing vocals and bass skill made the VH sound complete. He's one of a kind.
@@tednugentlives That's what made them awesome , he was a huge part of their success. But they screwed him over!
@@tednugentlives That guy doesn't get as much recognition as he needs to get! You are correct... he was THE integral part of the vocals and those bass lines if you listen carefully... are insanely awesome!
Eddie's sound and performance still outweighs any existing rock guitarist today. Hands down!! DLR is a one of a kind too
Hmmmmm. I'm guess you never saw Trey Anastasio perform with Phish in the 90s....
@@Mesaman0825 kkkkk nunca ouvi falar.
Alex and Eddie were joined at the hip I swear. We're not worthy!
@@Mesaman0825 Who??
Ha Treys still shredding, the 90's was just the warm up, this is great by the way, not a huge fan but Eddie was aaaaamazing, nothing but love for this band and their tunes. Phish is the next level👽⚡🕉️
A pretty good example of exactly how good they were and they really weren't that old. They had a machine gun drummer, a solid basist who could back up the vocals, an outrageous front man who didn't even have to sing that well to be a success, and of course the greatest living guitarist in the world.
Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist in the world.Eddie’s in the top 5 though.
Personally, Clapton is the most overlooked one.
didn't have to sing that well? he's possibly among the top 10 for excellent vocalists
@@jayyy1041 lol! Youd better rethink that one! Roth, and is 20s, had his voice breaking in live performances let alone when he was 50!
@@jayyy1041 bro thats crazy talk, gotta love Dave but greatest singer he was not, great showman though
Just two brothers jamming together like they did in their house all those years ago when they were kids. Magical.
Very cool moment.
In total sync. Ed has said, "Alex is the Rock, & I am the Roll" = Absolute perfection!
The boys absolutely slaying it at the top of the rock n’ roll mountain!
And that was awesome. Watching the two brothers have a conversation with their instruments is incredible.
Just close your eyes for a few minutes & this takes you back to the good old times back in high school. I could just envision every VH concert I went to & this band was the ultimate party band back in the day! Good times man…..
My iPhone just melted…this was a killer live performance by the mighty VH!!!
There will never be a any band like this again! Energy, humor, great songs, the best showman in rock a d the greatest rock guitarist....this was The Greatest Show on Earth....the original Van Halen!!!!!!!!!!
Name one other band that makes covers sound better than the original. Killer
Yeah, but they made that one sound like shit.
Metallica - Garage days, Inc
Even Ray Davies of the Kinks openly admitted that VH's cover of "You Really Got Me" was way better than the Kinks' version
Guns n Roses
Any band with a singer that can sing.
Few people understand what it takes to get in sync like this. Only brothers who have played together for a lifetime can do this sort of thing live.
How lucky were we that grew up during the 70-80s & got to see the Mighty VH live 👍
Holy crap, that was awesome! What a band they were. Classic!
You have to when you are the only guitarist in the band,
This band rocked it when I saw them live! I’ve seen a ton of bands but I left there saying that was the best and they were ! This is rock they are part of my life! Thanks for the live and memories ❤❤❤❤
Van Halen The most ultimate Rock Band of all time R.I.P EVH
David Lee Roth COULD actually sing live back then, haters be damned.
When he wasn't absolutely wasted, which wasn't often.

Too bad so many singers don't know when to quit or change their style.
@@SaintFredrocks and one to STFU and quit being whiny little bitch and quit being a bitter ex-wife and a snitch and a rat
AMEN!!
I saw them open for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour. Friends who didn't go would ask "How was Sabbath?" and I'd reply "good, but the opening band Van Halen was amazing!".
This tour was probably the most fun I have ever had at a concert....
Hey Brother im familiar with VH but could you list the names of the songs that were featured in this vid. Im blown away. Amazing performance.

I love the interaction with Alex and Edward. 🎸🥁
I saw this DIVER DOWN Tour and it was AWESOME!! He wore the stripes that year. Man those shows I can still remember them like they were yesterday. One of the greatset preforming bands ever.
This was the Fair Warning tour, and this was taped at the Oakland Coliseum on June 18, 1981
One of the best compilations on EVH and Van Halen I've seen, thank you for putting this together on the greatest band ever!
Awesome. I think Eddie and Michael’s backing vocals are great and often overlooked.
Agreed. Stellar
Yep..iron Mike still stellar to this day.
Michael's vocals were integral to the band. Didn't sound like VH after they stabbed him in the back.
overlooked? by whom?
This was the peak of their career
Physically all in sic shape, vocals tight, sound was spot on just a juggernaut of a band enjoying themselves
I love this performance...I was there at the US FESTIVAL 83 SAN BERNARDINO CALIFORNIA...I WAS THERE FIR 3 DAYS
The flying VH is the most iconic rock lighting backdrop in history
followed by the flaming gong, f'in awesome!
I always loved Dave's iconic screams back then!
Just drummer, 2 guitarist & bass player ! Music ! super powerful ! with just 3 members & singer. Incredible !
LOUD and Clear!! Sounds great, looks great, feels great. Ladies and Gentlemen...the Mighty Vaaaaan Haleeeennnn!
My favorite band of all time.
so many hits. Eddie’s playing is phenomenal imagine they still reaping royalties 45 years later
God bless
Takes me right back to high school when I saw VH in1978. So, so killer!
No one could touch Van Halen in their prime
You got that right!!
I couldn’t imagine my teenage years without this band.
The undisputed king of guitar, no will ever come close to Eddie...Rest in peace my friend............
Never again will the radio ,records, and concerts be this good. It's another phase of the pop culture evolution now. The soul is sold, the rock is rolled, and here we are just gettin' old.
VH wrote the soundtrack to my youth.
Nothing will ever top that live performance of Unchained. I'm glad it was captured on film. That's how you start a song.
Missed the first tour but saw the remaining tours with DLR, eddie gave me a Schlitz Malt liquer tall boy. Leaning on the stage for all shows, this band is incredible, will never be another like this. Every second of their shows were amazing. Simply the best of the best.
God i miss the real, prime VH. So damn good. Just let er rip, funtime music....
This made my day for sure 🤩! Eddie never failed, but the rythm section is outstanding as well as the backing vocals, not to mention DLR pants (and great vocal performance here). Happy to hear VH IV songs, the bass playing on So this is love and Unchained is terrific 👍
I can't like this hard enough.
He plays the most complex riffs --always with that amazing SMILE !

There's nothing like the anticipation of an Eddie Van Halen solo! Unlike many of the guys that are compared to him, Eddie played by the seat of his pants and refused to play the same "Canned" guitar solo from his records every night. RIP KIng Edward👑🎸
Nuno.
@@SaintFredrocks Nuno is fabulous! But was never the innovator or legend that Eddie was. Therefore his solos don't carry as much weight.
@@infiniteuniverse9528 the fact that Extreme started just when Grunge was coming in had nothing to do with it either did it. Eddie's solos were starting to get stale. Nuno is just getting better and better.
@@SaintFredrocks Bro, please tell me you're not actually comparing Nuno to Eddie, who is on the Mt Rushmore of Metal. Nuno is not on that level...

Soo happy I was a teenager during this era
yet you'd trade it to be a teen again proof the music is just filler.
Me too, I was lucky to see them multiple times in the prime years.
Saw these guys live in 81, 83, 84 and 85! 80's rock bands were so much fun back then!
And didn't use backing tracks either.
The groove the brothers had -- you can tell they were raised on jazz -- just beautiful
The magic and unique sound of this band will never be forgotten, van halen and and van Hagar, wow 20 years of magnificent creativity, thank you so much !
Dave's screams can't be replicated cause he hits 2 octaves simultaneously. Listen closely and you'll hear it. Insane!
No pedals no electrical effects just Eddies raw talent he really was amazing this band was the best part of my teens for sure
It is so good to see this I was at this tour
Listening to the insane riffs and weird chord progressions, you gotta give Dave credit for somehow coming up with memorable Melodie’s over that stuff.
Spot on. He also wrote perfect lyrics for the songs. Ted Templeman's book really illustrates that.
@@ZeNeonKnightI thought Ted's description of Roth's lyrics as beautifully abstract was perfect.
David is a master at his craft
@@Swanlord05 WITHOUT A DOUBT! He was every bit as integral to the band, as EVH. EVERY BIT.
Thanks for posting - I was 15 and there at the Oakland show in ‘81, and this only existed in my memory; so cool to see it again.
Eddie was my drive to learn how to play guitar. His rhythm and timing is what blew me away... his song writing too! Great original band!! It was almost like a different band with Sammy ... tighter and more pro like but I did love this original stuff the best.
The best live in your face the mighty VH!!!!
Face it. If you were born in the 60's and were in the teens/20's in the 80's - you had more fun than any other generation.
One of the cleanest versions of Unchained live. Even with Eddies mistake at the beginning. So cool!
Not a mistake.. It's the live version!
