Eddie made it look so easy. Hands were barely moving yet the sound was flying a million miles an hour. Incredible dexterity, intensity, clarity, phrasing. And most of all, groove. Wrote all the music, played both lead and rhythm, and sang backup. Effortlessly. One of the all time greats, if not *the greatest* of all time. He will be studied and copied for generations, but never duplicated. Thank you Ed. RIP

Yep! I can see all day long this band, and they play smiling and enjoying so much that looks like they were just playing simple stuff... In real is so difficult to play each song! They make it look so simple! Love this band!
I'm so glad that Eddie was able to turn his life around before he died. So glad it wasn't an overdose that killed him but got to see his son grow and tour with him.
But how much better it would have been for him to have "turned his life around" decades ago. In every one of his old interviews and vids, he always has a cigarette lit. He was a true addict. It is what killed him prematurely.
@@charleslaine I do not disagree with you. It would have been great for him to give up drugs, alcohol and smoking cigarettes decades ago or not have started in the first place. But everybody regrets doing something in their life. The fact that Eddie got cleaned up and lived longer than overdosing at age 30 like many other musicians is something that I commend.
Before posting "Dave is crap now" comments, I want you to bear something in mind, right before/at the start of the show Dave was "baton twirling" the top half of a mic stand, and that is an open/hollow piece of pipe in that state, and caught himself right on the bridge of his nose, splitting it open to the bone. He had a roady superglue the wound and strap it with a fabric band aid and got on with it, it being a live show with millions viewing on tv and the internet because in his mind the fans came before any amount of pain he was in, he was in ER right after the show and needed several surgeries after the fact to fix the injury properly, A singer can not sing correctly with a cold let alone an injury of this severity but he just did it anyway. K got that? good carry on.
+Caloss2 “RUclips” Channel yeah, I just bet the mic stand was spiked with nails, weighed 500 lbs and poor Dave was twirling it into a strong head wind, uphill, both ways, barefoot in the snow.....
I love the fact that Eddie is happy, clean, sober and healthy here. Great hair, Great goatee, Great physicality, cool, simple clothes. He was perfect here. Absolutely perfect. Focused and on point with his guitar and with his only son Wolfgang in stage with him. Too bad cancer came back and destroyed all of that and him.
not sure the audience know they are witnessing pure genius. Much more laid back performance than the old days of course, but musically absolutely awesome.
Sadly, most of the audience were just filming it on their phones, so it didn't look like they were into it. Back in the 70s, that whole floor would be a tidal wave of movement.
I had a friend who was a super active person, hardly ever drank or anything and was the healthiest person I knew. He got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 32 and was dead a year later. Cancer can take anyone out very fast.

Makes me think of when Jimi died, everyone was just plain bummed. I was very much in love with Janis (like I believe most teenage guys were then) and when she was told Jimi had died, Janis said "Goddamn it, he beat me to it!" This was true, but only by a few weeks. The "27 Club" was open for business, as Jimi and Janis were both 27 when they died, but they wouldn't be alone for long.☮
Six hours waiting on Hollywood Blvd for this concert. David was such a pro, continuing even though he smacked his nose with the mic stand. Eddie did an awesome solo while David was getting it fixed up. That was a great night.

My heart breaks knowing Eddie isn't here anymore butt thanks for the amazing music and memories. RIP
Eddie has inspired more people to pick up a guitar than anyone else...period. Including me in 1986. What a gift. Thanks for your time Eddie. See ya around.
I've seen a lot of crap posted about VH lately and as someone who's been a fan for 35 years, just want to point out a few things to some of the bashers: 1. Eddie looks and is playing better than he has in YEARS. He's cleaned himself up immensely. Some have criticized his lack of new material. The guy has nothing to prove. He invented the 80s rock sound everyone copied. The guy will be 60 this year. You don't hear Clapton coming up with new stuff, do you? And Clapton was Eddie's main influence. Ed is just letting the body of his career's work speak for itself and going out and having fun playing it for the fans. Give Al a lot of credit. He always seemed to be the glue to hold the band together and keep Eddie from self destructing....... 2. To the DLR critics: When has David Lee Roth ever sang well live? When has he acted anything less than bizarre on stage? He sounds great on the records within the confines of the studio but was never a great live singer even in the early 80s in his prime. The guy is a frontman and entertainer, that's it. Plus he's over 60 now. He never had range in his voice and was never someone brought into the conversation of great vocalists. Dave was always about working the crowd for the VH brothers and connecting with the fans. That's what he's good at. And he's still doing it......3. No kidding that Wolfie isn't Michael Anthony. But the kid can still hold his own on bass. What's lacking is Michael Anthony's backing vocals. He was the one that was behind the distinguished VH sound and made Dave sound better than he really was. That said, I think having Wolf in the band is what has kept Eddie as sober as he's been. Ed has admitted that being an example for his son, is what keeps him in line now. Take Wolf out of the band, and Eddie is libel to run off the rails again........4. VH fans think back to '85 when you heard DLR was leaving and how much it sucked and how you'd give anything to get them back together again. They're back, not fighting (for now), having fun, put out a solid album in 2012, and touring again. I never imagined 30 years ago I'd be sitting here today and being able to take my sons to see Van Halen in concert this summer. I don';t care that they are 60 and over, going bald, and Eddie has dentures. I don't care that David's already below average singing voice is even more below average. I don't care if Eddie is going to play Eruption for the millionth time and hasn't made another better solo instead. All that matters is that they are back playing live, and doing so without the drama of the first reunion attempt. We all know what they were in their prime, their impact in the 70s and 80s, and what their contribution to the soundtrack of our youth was. Now let's just go out there, and have as much fun watching them as they are having playing for us again and stop trying to be Siskel and Ebert here. I'm taking my 10 and 7 year old sons to see them in September. They can't wait and neither can I. They will have a chance to take a glimpse into their own Dad's youth and see some legends of rock at the same time. I am grateful for that. Thank you Ed, Al ,and Dave!!
Chris B Unfortunately, Chris, you're operating out of pure nostalgia for something that has been lost to history. You're not taking your kids to see Van Halen. You're taking your kids to see three sixty year-old men pretending to be Van Halen. I'm glad Eddie is healthy. And I don't necessarily want him to retire. But I would like him to retire the '80s Van Halen schtick and show us that he has more skill than just finger tapping and dive bombs; that his musical talent has depth that exceeds Eruption. His playing was unique and over the top in 1984. Today, it's no big deal. Frankly, the most interesting aspect of the Kimmel event was when Dave clonked himself in the head and was forced to shut the f%%$K up long enough for Ed and Al to noodle around and improv.
Chris B no love for Al? There has always been one constant in Van Halen and that is Alex. He has a very distinctive sound, and that's not easy for a drummer but you hear that snare and you know it's him.
The Greatest Rock Guitarist of his Generation. An original, gigantic innovator and trailblazer of electric guitar technique and sound. Thousands of people on Planet Earth started playing guitar because of this one man, Edward Van Halen.

Never cared for van Halen. Liked their music. He looked like a DORK!!!

Alex Van Halen is one of the most underrated drummers ever. Just stays right in there ton "o" bricks
No he's recognised by all real guitar players. He is just that damn good. He maybe top 5 of all drummers who ever played.
He is endorsed by paiste...
Alex is so smooth. He's the man.
He is amazing. It’s hard when your brother is on stage and he is the best guitarist in the world :)
The Real "Brown Sound" of the band! One of the best!
My buddy and I went to this, tickets were free and we stood in line for 7 hours in the LA sun. Seeing the mighty Van Halen was something I’ll never forget.
RIP Edward, thank you for the timeless music😊
You're so lucky!! I know it had to be worth waiting for and you witnessed history🎸 🎶❤
RIP
Eddie never had a mean face while ripping a solo... Always a huge smile on his face! The man loved what he was doing and so do we! Rock in peace sir! ❤️❤️😭🤘🤘
I like that about him. He was never weird, he's just always showing fun. He said it in interview, he was a regular kid who's a nerd with guitars. Love his should...humble guy.

I like how Dave is just having fun and there is no tension. Great attitude
David looks so different without his crown of glory, his hair.

I'm so glad that Eddie was able to turn his life around before he died. So glad it wasn't an overdose that killed him but got to see his son grow and tour with him.
Your salient point should be remembered more. Positive sentiment.
Great point !!
K got that? good carry on.

not sure the audience know they are witnessing pure genius. Much more laid back performance than the old days of course, but musically absolutely awesome.
Sadly, most of the audience were just filming it on their phones, so it didn't look like they were into it. Back in the 70s, that whole floor would be a tidal wave of movement.

Makes me think of when Jimi died, everyone was just plain bummed. I was very much in love with Janis (like I believe most teenage guys were then) and when she was told Jimi had died, Janis said "Goddamn it, he beat me to it!" This was true, but only by a few weeks. Eddie plays like it's effortless - and he's just happy as a kid to be playing. And Wolfie does Eddie proud on that bass!
Chris B You are correct sir!
Chris B You are correct sir!
Chris B
Unfortunately, Chris, you're operating out of pure nostalgia for something that has been lost to history.
To Look One thing is sure - you'll never see Van Halen posting comments in YOUR youtube videos.

@@gnrledzep4eva Wow, that's right. I love Van Halen, but so many not so great stories behind them...
ultimateclassicrock.com/sammy-hagar-accuses-van-halen-of-using-tapes-of-michael-anthonys-voice-in-concert/
I saw Van Halen twice in the 80's listened to them a lot...what I realize about them is that even though they have some heavy guitar rifs they're so melodic and listenable, really excellent...and fun.. I'll like be listening to them again..RIP Eddie
How can you miss someone you never knew personally so much. Aside from being one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, he touched so many people's lives with his awesome personality and a smile. He will never be forgotten.
It's all been done
He's the greatest guitar player of all time
Let's enjoy and keep his spirit alive
I'm always amazed by how fast Wolfgang grew into his role as an awesome VH bass player. He's got a great sound, performance, attitude, technique... He's got it all. Michael Anthony was fantastic, but Wolfgang is certainly up to the job as well.
An amazing dad and uncle....
Great example of how the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! RIP Eddie! Miss you!
Wolf on his worst day smokes MA on his best. It's a fact if you have ears. Think If Ed and Al had Wolf as a kid brother when they started out, just try to imagine what THAT would have sounded like. It's evident during the Hot for teacher Guitar solo. Almost Roger Gloverish. Just Crushing it. Perfect meter and execution, Taking nothing from the solo and adding a Blitzkrieg of descending minor pentatonic (add b5 (the blue note). Mike could sure scream and was in the pocket always. And Mike could swing like a champ. I'll take the Orange over the Apple
Not the same without Michael Anthony
@@ccg1171 Of course not. My point is Wolf's sheer Van Halen ability and talent level. Those Genes combined with his environment were the perfect storm of ingredients, don't you agree?
He just kept getting better. And his sound just kept getting better. Watching him, listening to him all those years, getting to know him through his God given talent, it's honestly like losing a family member. He's a true guitar hero and innovator. No doubt the best we'll ever see. RIP Eddie
for ever the best RIP Mr Edward VanHalen yet and probally never topped! Bless you for all the lasting work
For those of us who were teenagers back when they were at their prime and got to go their concerts it was a awesome time to be alive and they still rocked it 5 years ago and Eddie was awesome and loved what he was doing still and it's sad that we won't see them together anymore RIP Eddie and thanks for the memories and great times
Who knew he would die after 5 years ... such a pure soul ... shred in peace king ... legacy will never die ...
I love Edward's tone ar this show! Not saturated and drenched in delay and reverb, everything so clean and crystal clear, cutting through the mix like a sword!
no reverb... bruh?
@@beefcheeks9353 he didn’t say no reverb. His sound is crisp and clear and not overdone with too much reverb.
You actually think that venue could sound that good live?. Backing tracks saved Eddie in this performance. Listen carefully and watch Eddie's fingers. What you hear is NOT what he's playing.
Totally agree! Unbelievable tone!
Saw them for the first time in 1982. After all these years, there musically still on top of their game. Wow just wow
Dave is such a showman, hilarious on Dance the night away..No wonder we love him also!:) Eddie.. We love you forever!!
The world lost one of the Greatest Rock guitarist of all time yesterday. How that man could make a guitar sing like he did was just on another level. A true musician. In 1978 when I was just 16 years old and playing drums in a garage band here comes VH. I was hooked. Been following them since. It's been a rough year. First arguably the best rock drummer of all time Neil Peart leaves us and know Eddie too. Very sad. Rest in peace Eddie.
Give Dave some credit, right at the start of the show he busted his nose with the microphone and he didn’t punk out , he finished what he started cause that’s what artists do to entertain their fans.
shadowlesswarrior he has been singing horribly since he rejoined VH. You can search for excuses, but he cant sing anymore.
@@viniciusfdavid Does it matter? Can Ozzy sing? No? Still a legend. Can Axl Rose sing? No. Still a legend.
@@_Synt4x3rr0r Yeah, it does. When you're ugly on the inside, it comes out. DLR is an arrogant punk. Axl Rose too. Arrogant and an asshole. It shows.
A. G. If you think it’s ok to sound like shit, your choice. I would never pay to listen to something so bad. I still listen to old recordings, and I have no doubt that he is a legend. But I think he could have choosed to, nowadays, sing something that soundsbbetter
@@viniciusfdavid Exactly... break out some Robert Plant... sounds like old fine wine. Smooth... Voice gets better with age... I bet his wife don't complain when he sings in the shower.
My dad knew Eddie back in the day when they were both struggling musicians. He had nothing but the best to say about him and said he was a solid dude.
The sparkle is still alive in them. Too fast too soon that Eddie died with that extra ordinary talent he alone can give.Im just happy they performed for that little time left when Eddie is still alive. Edie you are truly one of a kind, an icon, a living legend!!!
shut the fuck up
@@JimA-pp2nu right! How's he a living legend when the man passed away... He's a legend yes but not living
The spark is definitely still alive in Eddie, don't know about the rest though
RIP Eddie can not stop crying
Me neither
Awww it’s so sad... I said a prayer for such a talented and handsome man. It breaks my heart.❤️😔✊🏽im crying
I'm 55 and keep bursting into tears. This is the saddest day of the year so far. This group was the soundtrack to our lives!
RIP Eddie...You're the best!
@@robfrombohemiahinkson7300 i feel you man. Our childhood heroes are going one by one.
Eddie Van Halen was Mozart on a guitar.
YES!!
And Houdini for what notes escaped his 🎸

Son's name is Wolfgang 😉
I miss him everyday! Glad we all got to share the planet with him! I’m very thankful and ever so grateful. Never missed a local concert. Watched he and Alex at the Golden Bear in LA in 75. Thank you Eddie fur the memories and Wolfgang, you are amazing as well! Peace
Wow, EVH looks like he's got a good 30 years left in him here...RIP
That unmistakable EVH guitar sound .... Freaking Awesome.....
Favorite guitarist: Eddie. Favorite drummer: Alex. The dynamic duo.
Eddie was on fire during this time. Band sounds killer.
The sound man deserves a medal!!! Beautiful job!
VH sound incredible live! Polished and professional! This is one of the best recordings and will probably be the last one for posterity.
At least Eddie looks incredibly happy here and reenergized!
One of the last great Rock bands! Eddie and his harmonics. He has such a keen sense of melody! Now they’re done and no one is coming up to replace them.
The Who used to be asked why they kept going and they replied that no body any good was coming up to replace them. Truer now than ever!
Rock is deader than ever. Sadly. Thanks for reminding of what Rock was once! 😎👏🏻🎸
they may be older, but they still rock man! DLR broke his freaking nose right at the start and they still did the gig, with lots energy and putting a great show, respect and rock on man!!!
It wasn’t broken, just bleeding.
