  • Van Halen - Live Without a Net is a live concert video DVD of Van Halen in concert recorded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1986, and released the following year. It was of their performance on August 27, 1986 at New Haven's Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The 90-minute release removed a few songs from the full performance. While the band attempted to record the previous night, audio problems prevented it from being used, although some video footage from that night would later surface in concerts video. The concerts were part of the 1986 tour, Van Halen's first rock concert with lead singer Sammy Hagar.
Setlist: Introduction "There's Only One Way to Rock" "Summer Nights" "Get Up" "Drum Solo" "5150" "Best of Both Worlds" "Bass Solo" "Panama" "Love Walks In" "Guitar Solo" "I Can't Drive 55" "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" "Why Can't This Be Love" "Rock 'N' Roll" (John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant). The good news is, there are still plenty of good rock bands out there touring for living and playing killer shows. This is one of the most high energy concerts ever put to film. I'm not the world's biggest Van Hagar fan but the 5150 era is by far a peak for the band, everything is just so tight and full of energy, Ed is experimenting with MIDI effects (various delay times in 5150, chorus, etc), experimenting with the TransTrem in Summer Nights and Get Up...
I can't get enough of this concert, and my mom told me she saw this concert when she was in college, so damn jealous haha

I can feel you on the thought. They just came off the 1984 tour and bam. I remember Sammy saying something like "we just hung a mic down in the middle of the studio" Halen then was seriously dripping with peak music...and I believe, IMO, they hit just as good an album with 5150 as they did with 1984. My OPINION only. The energy was there man.....Remember folks, Hagar wasnt exactly a slouch himself...Fucken solo in Summer nights gets me going. That was too long ago.

Chad and TheRealMrPooPyNuTz your right!! I've been to A LOT of concerts and they rank in the top 5. Its been said that 1984 was the pinnacle of their career. I don't think so, Hagar brought new blood! They where never my favorite, hell not even in my top 10, but it was one hell of a show!!!! Eddie can really shred!!!

I agree .. they were so much better live with Hagar . Love Dave but he would skip entire verses, sing off key, forget lyrics etc .. Hagar solo and with Halen was still an entertaining showman but just sounded so much better live .

I doubt there is all that much dubbing here, although the audio is likely cut from more than one show. This is done with classical concerts as well. You got 2-3 nights of shows and with a band this tight, that’s all you need. Just mix and release with maybe a patch here or there for microphone dropouts. pretty much as advertised: Live without a net.
Ed was a wild man, but he was a preternaturally good live player. Amazing sense of pulse - like a great conductor. And he and Al were blue collar types who were constitutionally unable to put out a sloppy record.

To me... for all THEIR musical prowess.... you simply can NOT top this as a LIVE testament to VH's incredible musical 'chops'; all of them, not just ed. This and ozzy's 'ultimate sin' vhs tour .. unbeatable for this, me, as a guitarist, musician... This VH recorded concert is just amazing.... play along with it for some motivation!!

+John Martini Ozzy's music is a bit more "leaden " sounding than Van Halen. VH is brighter sounding, he weaves all kinds of interesting guitar phrases into the songs, does more improvising. Ozzy is more theater where as VH is more a straight up rock concert. VH is also just a more creative musician , however the scales ozzy uses are different too. VH uses the whammy bar and crazy string bending techniques, and more pedal effects. I'd say Brad Gillis is the closest I've seen to EVH for spontaneous eccentric playing.

This is an amazing performance. I remember watching it on ITV one night when it came out of the blue, with no commercial release in the UK. Luckily I taped it from the TV and played it endlessly. They were electric and it showed the leap from the Roth era to Hagar, who was multi-talented. It took way too long for the DVD release but was still worth it.

Watching this today to heal my aching heart. I saw this show in Toronto and it was the best Van Halen concert I saw. Eddie Van Halen was my idol and still is. Gonna miss that smile and amazing sound he made.
    RIP EVH 💔

Sammy really tears it up on the guitar in that opening song, spectacular to see him and Eddie both playing.

I got a dubbed copy of this concert from my uncle Dave when I was 12. My lil brother and I watched this concert hundreds of times together, singing dancing and playing air guitar! My brother Jeremy and My uncle Dave will greet Eddie with open arms! I will sit here and watch this show alone in tears remembering all 3 of them!

These guys were at the absolute top of their game here. Sammy brought a higher level of musicianship and integrity. All killer no filler.
