He knew music theory... WTF are you talking about? He's playing Bach progressions while he's tapping! Are you thinking of Jimi Hendrix? EVH was a classically trained pianist. You don't get that title without music theory.
Yes I always loved Cathedral(Diver Down) and managed to freeze the volume pot on my vintage 64 Strat while trying to get it right after about fifteen minutes
Hendrix was amazing, but Eddie was THE best. No one on our planet will ever reach this level. We will all miss you, thank you for gracing us with your presence.
Since the 2021 Grammy Awards show did not properly honor the late, great Eddie Van Halen....His fans truly honor him for changing the course of Rock & Roll and influencing musicians all over the world!
Why quit? Theres only 1 EVH, you'll probably never be as good as him, but use him as motivation. Playing guitar in your room, by yourself is the best form of self conscienceness. You learn alot about yourself. Don't be a quitter! Get back in there and pick up that ax and play away brotha!
This is classic EVH. Period. Ed looks great, seems to be enjoying himself. We are lucky to be able to see this in such great quality. Life is good! Haters wanting Ed to do something else? What ever!
The world was in shock when they released their first VH album in 1978. Today you find shredders at every corner, but in '78 this was innovative and new. No one had heard something this extraordinary since Jimi Hendrix was around.
Saw them on their first tour in 78 in Birmingham, AL. It was a Journey/Montrose/Van Halen concert and they opened. Their first album had just come out and they played all of the songs off of that album in order. Running With the Devil was the only song on the radio at that time. Opening with Eruption had everyone's jaws on the floor. Montrose and Journey were kind of anti-climatic after Van Halen.
Inge Kvam There may be a lot of shredders around, but they all sound homogeneous. Eddie has a unique sound and style of his own that nobody quite duplicates. When you hear Eddie, you know it’s him. He is melodic in his shredding, all the notes come together in a very musical way whereas most shredders just throw out as many notes as fast as possible. EVH is the man!🤘🏻
before Hendrix there was a guy called Lonnie Mack who was doing things in 1962 that absolutely blew guitar players minds. He was the first to raise the bar on how good you could play electric guitar
It’s sad because of now in the present he suffers from tinnitus (I think that’s how u spell it) and it’s an ongoing irritation. But i love what this man did for our ears instead of benefiting his ears. I don’t think anyone will ever stop being inspired by this man. Love for the strings🙌🏻
When I clicked I got sad because it didn't sound as... Shreddy... But then as I watched it got better. A legend never dies. Rest in peace Eddie. Greatest god damn shredder of all time. I bet all of us who never saw a concert would die to see a EVH concert.
I love Eddie. Lots of classical melody here. Remember his Dad was a classical musician. This is who this man is. He once said he would never play the guitar again because he was way in to the key board. Glad to see Eddie showing the world just how he changed the world.
Wow, he's gotten through it all, everything he's had to deal with and gone through with his drinking, cancer and the man is sounding and playing better than he ever has at what his late 50's now? This isn't about comparing this man to other guitar players or who likes who better, it's an appreciation of a masterful talent doing "his own thing" with all his heart and soul with technical precision and a love of music and his guitar, "this was impressive" flawless inspiring and powerful and hats off to Eddie!!
His playing is raw and brutal. I can tell his hands must be very strong. That’s one of the things that young (and very talented) guitar players in RUclips do not get. Just see the way he plays. It’s not just about nailing “Beat It”. See how grounded and confident he is. He’s like 65 but and yet his playing is fierce.
@lowerthanaslave You might be right, but not by a large margin. In this video, he's old, has cancer, (probably doesn't know it yet) and is playing at close to his peak performance. He isn't my favorite guitarist of all time, but I can't name any other guitarist whose talent has held up for so many decades, except perhaps for Roy Clark or Glenn Campbell.
Growing up during the early to late 70s I remember everyone was listening to Kiss my older brother brought home the first Van Halen album it blew my mind, and I remember playing this album for all of my friends and blowing there minds. What a great time to be a meathead.
I had a sort of band in a small town when Eddie was first being played on the radio and television friends and I were looking at each other saying how the hell is this man making guitar make the sound he was pulling out of it.Still amazing to hear and see till this day!!!! RIP EVH
That's funny you say that.....Rolling Stones magazine interviewed Jimmy Page in 1987. He even mentioned Eddie as a trailblazer for modern electric guitar. This isn't a comparison video you rocket scientist. It's a video showcasing EDDIES STYLE AND TALENT. Undeniable to everyone except you because we all know you are the utmost authority on the electric guitar. What a moron.
Mh R obviously you know nothing of guitar playing. Try listening to yngwie Malmsteen. The true master. Fuck this punk. Basic shit with an upbeat tempo. Big fucking deal.
I never heard someone make there guitar sound like a violin. That was some of the best playing I have heard. And with a guitar that looks like it’s been through war.
He doesn't admit to 'inventing' anything. But he did do rhythm and solo work in a band, while writing music... none of which is 'easy'. So, no... he's not "just a fast player". People don't love EVH because of his speed, it's because ... well, you wouldn't understand.
Man, why did he have to pass away. Ever since I heard eruption I picked up a guitar and decided this is what I want to do, and here I am now and all my friends are jealous of me. Thanks Eddie you inspired so many people to play guitar and even pioneered the tapping thing, I do it everyday cause of how fun it is. Again thanks Eddie, now go play a loud concert in the afterlife.
Never thought I would have to say this in my lifetime. DAMNIT! RIP Eddie! You are by far one of the greats and ultimate pioneer. Even though you are gone, your legend and music will indefinitely last FOREVER!
It's easy to forget Eddie was the first to ever play like this...ever back then. Nobody was doing hammer ons back then. No computers back then. Limited petals were even created back then. He made the sounds using his fingers, picks and imagination. They had to change the way music was written because of him because if the way he played. Has definitely the father of modern guitar playing.
"duh nobody was doing this duh changed music duh lddld dl suckle nip toot Ed is God greatest ever" Look at the date of the video, fanboy. It was made in 2015 and Ed still hasn't come up with a single new thing since 1978. If Tiny Tim were alive today his brain-dead fans would want to hear "TipToe Thru the Tulips", just as the same morons insist that Jerry Lee play that crap "Great Balls" duh, one more time! Or, hey, Stones! Lets hear "Satisfaction" for the entirety of the concert! Samo shit over and over and over....
Bob Gemale you're an idiot or drunk. Anyone with a brain would know I'm describing his playing technic was innovative way back when he first did this style of playing. Nobody before him did this style. Are you really this stupid to post your remark to me?
Its about being so good, you invent a whole new genre of guitar, a new era. It's not about the physical ability to play what he is playing, it's about the invention of it, the wholesomeness. It's about the sound, the music, how it makes you feel. He was one of the best.
Amazed at the idiots being critical of this guitar innovator and genius. What he is playing is remarkable and as a guitar player myself, I would give anything to be able to do what he can do, even if it's not my preferred style. While I am not a huge Van Halen fan, I know this guy revolutionized the instrument and I am amazed that he is still doing this with such brilliant technical competence and virtuosity. I am guessing all the critics either don't play an instrument or are just jealous.
You called it, dude. It's jealousy from those idiots. Eddie Van Halen is still a master at what he does and doesn't have to change for anyone. One of my top 10 guitarists!
have to say I agree with Paul Warren.WHAT THE FUCK.i am not a huge Van Halen fan and never was but this man is one of the true greats.Maybe he is too original for some with his approach to the guitar.Rock on Eddje
Paul Warren - Undoubtedly brilliant, but this video just showcases that he hasn’t been relevant in the last 25 years, and is playing the same signature licks over and over since then. Respect to him, but people who unabashedly give this tired stuff adulation are the reason why has-beens like Eric Clapton are somehow still winning Grammys.
I heard that his cancer came back I pray everything turns out alright we all should pray if we lose him in just don’t want to think about it a true god right here 😥🤘🏻🎸👏🏻
Eddie forever changed how everyone would view the electric guitar and that there were no boundaries that couldn't be broken...and right up until the very end Eddie was expanding those boundaries of what could be done on this wonderful instrument called the guitar...🎸🎸🎸
Looks like hes playing a guitar thats been tossed in the attic years ago, dusts it off - and fresh sound that now plays like it came from heaven is heard. First time watching this. Thank you.
Eddie, I love you. You are a few years older but we are from the same place, around the same time, know a lot of the same people, have enjoyed each other's company on a couple handful of occasions, and drive the same streets daily. Since I was 14, I have done my part everyday to spread OUR (Van Halen Music) message to whoever would listen or had to hear. I have also gladly contributed a considerable amount of money and love to your lifestyle in return for the enormous, unequaled contribution you have so masterfully given mine. As a 'friend' who has never asked for anything nor would ever take anything, I have one request for you to consider. Think objectively about the long path you have walked and who has been with you on that journey. A Man accepts responsibility, takes on a measure of fault and blame, if required, makes amends, and apologizes to those he may have hurt by his words or actions. Better sooner than later. It is never too late. Anyone, any Man, who is worth shit has done it. Me, more than once. Thanks for changing the game and making every day, from 14 to 56, better for me. God bless, brother.
Saw Van Halen in 1978 when they opened for Aerosmith at the Los Angeles Coliseum.... They absolutely stole the show and had people screaming for them to come back when Aerosmith was playing!!! And even though I was a Big Time Aerosmith fan, I too wanted more of Van Halen... This was when Aerosmith band members were all strung out and Van Halen was just hitting the big time! What a great time to be a teenager!!!
I was living on the streets most of the time as a runaway kid in the dreary streets of Manchester England. I had no fun and no music and no life until my mum threw my dad out, then, I listened to all his Beatles records and Queen too cause he didn't come back for them. I also had his Senator guitar and I learned to play it in 3 months.
Saw them in '79 and the mid 80's (twice) and it's so hard for me to put my head around that this is the same kid I saw so long ago (I feel old). The sound is spot on but the visual input does not correspond. EVH will always be 20 in my head.
Well...after 30 years he's changed it up a notch. Even though I have seen him do this many times over the years, it still instills a sense of awe at just how amazing Eddie is as a once in a lifetime talent. Thanks for posting! 😉🤘
In my opinion, only three guitarists have completely turned the rock guitar world on it’s head: Hendrix, Eddie, & Yngwie.. in that order. But let’s not get carried away here... Even though he was long gone by the time the 80s came around, Hendrix was still by far the most influential guitarist of that period. Any decade you want to name from the 60s onwards, Hendrix was and always will be the most influential guitarist of that decade. No one has ever changed music so much and no one ever will. I’m a massive Eddie fan. Probably a bigger fan than I am of Hendrix actually. But Jimi will always be the most important and influential in my eyes, no matter who comes along, I don’t think he can ever be topped 🤷🏼♂️
Miss him already. R.I.P. Eddie. Rock Guitarist Eddie Van Halen ~~ there will be no other as the likes of him~>" A true Legend".♥ We are blessed to have his music and his video's....Thank you Eddie. Gone way too soon.

I love the fact that he popularized the most iconic shred technique without knowing a thing about music theory
He did know some, he had some classical piano classes. Still, none guitar classes. He was his teacher and He couldnt have found a best teacher.
@@enricodelascio4330 exactly! He won piano contests as a kid
I never knew that. Thought he knew all the scales like Vai and Satriani
he did tho
He knew music theory... WTF are you talking about? He's playing Bach progressions while he's tapping! Are you thinking of Jimi Hendrix? EVH was a classically trained pianist. You don't get that title without music theory.
I really love what he starts doing at 6:45. What beautiful music. He's making his guitar sing.
You would not guess a guitar more like keyboard

@Totalis ya no shit
Hes getting old but he never gets old
It's sucks to watch great musicians age.....but a least we can come back to youtube and see them in their youth as well.
that makes no sense
He's dead
This just got a whole new meaning
this didnt age well...
Since the 2021 Grammy Awards show did not properly honor the late, great Eddie Van Halen....His fans truly honor him for changing the course of Rock & Roll and influencing musicians all over the world!
@Barfieman362,yoy are correct ,the Grammy is a bunch off bullshit rappers and people that can not be seen as artists
He changed the course of rock and roll? From what to what? What got changed?
Eddie is the reason I started playing guitar!! Coincidentally, he's also the reason I quit playing guitar.
or maybe it was the groans you indiced at Guitar Center after you started playing shit like this?
@@bobgemale1312 LMFAO
No, you quit, because you are a quitter.
Why quit? Theres only 1 EVH, you'll probably never be as good as him, but use him as motivation. Playing guitar in your room, by yourself is the best form of self conscienceness. You learn alot about yourself. Don't be a quitter! Get back in there and pick up that ax and play away brotha!
What!
RIP Edward.
Thank you for re-inventing the electric guitar!
❤
This is classic EVH. Period. Ed looks great, seems to be enjoying himself. We are lucky to be able to see this in such great quality. Life is good! Haters wanting Ed to do something else? What ever!
Well said friend
Sometimes I just have to let my nearest neighbor a quarter mile down the road hear some Van Halen!
This is my favorite version of this solo. Eddie changed the world.
The world was in shock when they released their first VH album in 1978.
Today you find shredders at every corner, but in '78 this was innovative and new.
No one had heard something this extraordinary since Jimi Hendrix was around.
Inge Kvam it’s still extremely original and innovative, to be honest. The note choice Eddie makes is vastly unlike what a modern shredder would do
Saw them on their first tour in 78 in Birmingham, AL.
EVH is the man!🤘🏻
Craig Doriety Yes, it would have been anticlimactic. I wonder what Journey thought of this powerhouse VH?
before Hendrix there was a guy called Lonnie Mack who was doing things in 1962 that absolutely blew guitar players minds.
I just love the fact he smiles and grins during his solos because music should be fun and he is having fun.
I love musicians and athletes smiling and having fun doing what they love!
I was thinking the same. The depth of his music is incredible compared to his '83 performance which is also on youtube.
In fact, EVH is 60 years old during this solo. Living legend.
Saw VH two years ago and WOW! Amazing show and Eddie killed it 😍
Mathew Ryan
Amen brother!
My biggest inspiration. Gone but never forgotten. He was truly the greatest guitar player this world has ever seen. Rest In Peace Eddie ❤️
He was OK.
Because its from the core, he plays what he is, an extension of his personality
I grew up trying to play eruption and failed miserably time and time again until I got it. Thanks Eddy, for teaching me never to give up.❤️
He really was a true inventor, one of the best creators of his time, instrument, and genre. Definitely one of my all time favorite guitarists.
His dexterity was a amazing. Great timing. That few will ever match ,
RIP. ,we will all Miss you. Eddie,,,
I actually think he improved with age , it became effortless and just poured out of him , pure genius
Idk man that late 70s Eddie was probably the best player ever when you take a step back and analyze
@N G he didn't even have his custom 9 string guitar. So effortlessly. He can make a guitar talk and make it look easy...
This guy is an international treasure
Hallo Baas nah he is an American treasure BITCH
@@dripstein6130 He's Dutch with US citizenship. International treasure.
Growing up during the early to late 70s I remember everyone was listening to Kiss my older brother brought home the first Van Halen album it blew my mind, and I remember playing this album for all of my friends and blowing there minds. What a great time to be a meathead.
Wish i could of been around to see it, you're lucky man.
Metalhead I guess...lol me too but was a meathead too back then.
KISS said they didn't want Eddie as their Lead Guitar Player because they recognized he had enough talent to make a name for himself.

I had a sort of band in a small town when Eddie was first being played on the radio and television friends and I were looking at each other saying how the hell is this man making guitar make the sound he
was pulling out of it.Still amazing to hear and see till this day!!!! RIP EVH
One of the most talented musicians to even strap on a guitar. Amazing after all these years. Rock on brother.
What a bunch of bull. I got 2 words for Edward Van Winckle and his fans. Jimmy Page, the real guitarist in the room.
I heard a guitar morph into a violin then back into a guitar yet my eyes never saw that, what the?
That guitar was new at that time, it's a custom paint job. R.I.P. Edward.
He had an infectious smile and his eyes smiled too! Cute as ever RIP
Such an attention getter and it worked! 💕💕
The smile was proof you could tell he loved what he was doing.
He also never stopped smiling, the man was always smiling as he held a guitar. RIP
The reason i started playing guitar 30 years ago at 10yrs old, and still play everyday. Such a madman at the guitar. Rip brother
Eddie will always go down as one of the greatest innovators in rock history a true professional.
He was just a fast player that really didn't invent any techniques that certain folks like to spread around...
He doesn't admit to 'inventing' anything. But he did do rhythm and solo work in a band, while writing music... none of which is 'easy'. So, no... he's not "just a fast player". People don't love EVH because of his speed, it's because ... well, you wouldn't understand.
Robert Allen he made tapping more relative. Sure, he’s not THE best guitarist, but he’s better than a lot of professionals.

I saw him in Charlotte in 2015, at the US Festival ll in 83 and at the Forum in 81! Thank you Edward Van Halen!
"duh nobody was doing this duh changed music duh lddld dl suckle nip toot Ed is God greatest ever"
Look at the date of the video, fanboy.
Dave, I agree wholeheartedly brah! Bob Shemale is a mud whistle.

Its about being so good, you invent a whole new genre of guitar, a new era. It's not about the physical ability to play what he is playing, it's about the invention of it, the wholesomeness. It's about the sound, the music, how it makes you feel. He was one of the best.
I can truly say, Eddie and his Guitar would become as ONE in every performance.
Such a talented guy
Rest in peace Eddie
You're music will never die, whilst people still listen .
Eddie is beyond a shredder. He is a masterful performer and innovated many sounds. A true gifted guitarist.
\M/
It's not remarkable!
The king doing his business one last time. I feel so thankful to have seen Van Halen in concert many times between 1991 and 2015.
I'm just happy to see him healthy !!!!....and still awsome !!!!

Eddie, I love you. You are a few years older but we are from the same place, around the same time, know a lot of the same people, have enjoyed each other's company on a couple handful of occasions, and drive the
same streets daily.
Lucky bastard
I was living on the streets most of the time as a runaway kid in the dreary streets of Manchester England. I had no fun and no music and no life until my mum threw my dad out, then, I listened to all his Beatles records and Queen too cause he didn't come back for them. I also had his Senator guitar and I learned to play it in 3 months.
Saw them in '79 and the mid 80's (twice) and it's so hard for me to put my head around that this is the same kid I saw so long ago (I feel old). The sound is spot on but the visual input does not correspond. EVH will always be 20 in my head.
yeah, I feel the same way. I saw them on their diver down tour.

Well...after 30 years he's changed it up a notch. Even though I have seen him do this many times over the years, it still instills a sense of awe at just how amazing Eddie is as a once in a lifetime talent. Thanks for posting! 😉🤘
An amazing talent! Not only an innovator but one of the most influential guitarists of the 80s and arguably of all time!
70's and 80's +
In my opinion, only three guitarists have completely turned the rock guitar world on it’s head:
Hendrix, Eddie, & Yngwie.. in that order.
Him and Dimebag are the two people who smile the most when playing guitar. The pure joy is contagious. RIP Dime.
Mad skills makes it look easy. What a special soul. Glad I was alive to witness
Eddie doesn’t just meet or beat the standard of what an electrifying performance should sound like. He is the standard.
