What a great historical moment. Eddie was totally sincere when he said," without what you've done I couldn't be doing what I do." You can't be a guitarist and watch Eddie Van Halen kiss Les Paul's face with infinite respect gratitude and love, and NOT tear up a little bit.. Beautiful. Les Paul is GOD.
@Tessmage Tessera I honestly don't remember ever kissing my dad, lots of hugs.dad was a career military man and not real affectionate.and seriously I'm past any feelings or give a fuck about anyone's sexual prefferance..do what you want.i think in a text it can be hard to get the real emotion through and maybe it just sounded like a "cold" statement, but u was pretty much laughing because I wasn't expecting it ,and I don't think he's Paul was either..
He’s just the most talented player I’ve ever seen hands down - even the little things in this are just astonishingly good like the tapped harmonics in the breakdown and then the pick slide right after are just incredible he just brings every aspect of the guitar up to a level that’s just unattainable for well…anyone that’s not him lol
So sad. But seeing this and rewatching all the videos, remembering my youth n all the good times that went along with VH in the background n knowing that we can pass it down to our kids so they know what real musicianship is fills my heart. No more suffering. He's left 50 yrs of music. My goodness what a catalogue. Prayers for peace to the VH Family, esp Valerie n Wolf. 🙏🏾❤🤟🔥🎸🕊
Ive been worried about Ed’s health for awhile now. There’s been a couple of photos posted where he’s not looking so great. What a sad day. I’ll be watching Eddie all day. I was 14 in 1984. Love you Eddie. RIP.
I couldn't agree more. The irony of EVH is that he is so known as a soloist, especially among guitar players but his riffs are known by everyone. Panama is the Brown Sugar of the 80's. The song 5150 and Drop Dead Legs, especially the outro are rhythm guitar riff masterpieces. For all the technique EVH brought to the guitar the thing he's forgotten for is bringing back the 3rd. Power chords are great but he perfected a way to compensate tune so he could being the 3rd back into the harmony with big tube overdrive without it sounding like crap. God bless EVH and that magical Plexi head for giving us the BROWN SOUND. That is his true legacy. Too bad for us the mindless compression record companies force upon us in the age of the volume wars, riffs are not allowed breath anymore. Now days to have any feel or dynamics most songs on the radio have a "quiet part" and then kick in to the "heavy part" in pure formula. You shouldn't nee a f'ing quite part to make the heavy part rock all the time! Nothing really rocks anymore on rock radio because it has no feel due to the click tracked drums, shit loads of compression and the redundant power chords that would make even the great Toni Iomi embarrassed. Bring back the feel and bring back the 3rd.
He played the guitar like it was an extension to his soul. A musical genius to say the least. RIP King EDDIE you have inspired millions of young boys such as myself back in the day. Godspeed
Nobody can play that damn thing like that. Nobody. Many have tried. Nobody else. The songwriting too. I heard it in a record store. Bummed $7.99 from my buddy and proceeded to be blown away. Thank you, Thank you EVH!!!
It's amazing to see Eddie talk about how much of an impact Les Paul had on music and laying the ground work for Eddie's own techniques and songs, because Eddie is probably one of the few famous guitar players to have made just as big of an impact as Les Paul on pioneering rock music and guitar gear. Both will be remembered as legends.
RED_PILLED Yeah, that sounds like a similar interview I saw too. He described doing all kinds of trial and error and experimenting with his frankenstrat. Dude was a genius.

That’s what I noticed also. Going between Robert Fripp & Adrian Belew to Eddie Van Halen says a lot about his abilities. Maybe more so than all three of those guitarists.
Yes, Mr. Van Halen is the master of the rock guitar and that fact will remain until the end of time. Rest in peace good sir. We mortals miss you every single day.
My brother was a limo driver in NYC . Eddie Van Halen was his client for the night. This was after a concert. Eddie was in local bar near Madison square garden. When he is goofing around with other instrumentalists like this, improvising, you get the sense of just how sharp he was. I mean dead on the beat with every note, perfect timing and taste and mix with the others, and masterful switch between rhythm and lead at any given millisecond.
His playing seemed a deliberate over the top train wreck that we were fascinated to watch and listen to because he was in total control. Two guitar gods, one making the other possible, and the other one taking it further. Eddie's face shining and so happy from 0:08 when kissing Les Paul and then smiling at his guitar god father. So much affection and recognition again from 6:30
Honestly, it makes it better when you can tell that HE'S having fun. At least during Eddie's day though rock and roll (especially Van Halen) was allowed to be fun, before everyone went power ballad or grunge.

Les Paul also was an amazing guitarist! As was his main influence, Django!
What a great historical moment. Eddie was totally sincere when he said," without what you've done I couldn't be doing what I do." You can't be a guitarist and watch Eddie Van Halen kiss Les Paul's face with infinite respect gratitude and love, and NOT tear up a little bit.. Beautiful. Les Paul is GOD.
but still....he kissed another dude!😀
@Tessmage Tessera I honestly don't remember ever kissing my dad, lots of hugs.dad was a career military man and not real affectionate.and seriously I'm past any feelings or give a fuck about anyone's sexual prefferance..do what you want.i think in a text it can be hard to get the real emotion through and maybe it just sounded like a "cold" statement, but u was pretty much laughing because I wasn't expecting it ,and I don't think he's Paul was either..
@LunchWithOrca great,,still haven't kissed my dad,so I'd say thAts good.havent had any desire to kiss Eddie or Les.😊😊
I teared up also. It was a beautiful moment in time.
I’m no guitarist,& I teared up. RIP
The kindness, love and respect he showed Les showed the heart of the man. Truly humble and gifted beyond words.
Watching this tonight after the news of his death with tears in my eyes, this video brought me out of depression, cant believe hes gone.
This is liquid energy and beauty
RIP.
Yeah same here
EVH is a fantastic soloist, but what really sets him apart is his sense of rhythm.
Indeed. Ed's said that his playing prowess is in his right hand, not his left.
Bring back the feel and bring back the 3rd.
he has it all...best guitarist in the world...total mastery in the hands combined with mind blowing improv creativity
True, the guy has a natural groove that can't be denied. The rhythm on songs like Dirty Movies have a such a dirty funk to them.

I Agree and Well Said!!
Love that song!!
Remember watching a video Eddie describing the paces he would put his amps through to insure it was a good one .
RED_PILLED Yeah, that sounds like a similar interview I saw too. He described doing all kinds of trial and error and experimenting with his frankenstrat. Dude was a genius.
johnny torres why? Eddie was a master at building guitars.
There will never ever be a guitarist like EVH ,,,, . He was the best , and still is the best !! Rock Heaven Eddie ...
AMEN
I think Eddie's in his prime here, such a great performance.
Just the riiight amount of drugs before it spiralled downward
He is
He is still in his prime
You got that right, so good here.
Pretty much flawless.
Happy Birthday Eddie. You will always be the most important musician in my life.
RIP Eddie. He was awesome, humble and a creative genius. Les actually said that he, Leo Fender and Eddie were the only people who could make a good guitar! I hope all three of you are jammin' in heaven right now!
I agree with this, except Brian May and his late father might like to say something about that! 😉
Jeff Wineland stole my “Brian May: ‘Hold My Beer’” thunder.

Cancer is such an EVIL disease, and Eddie was a WARRIOR for SO many years, battling it.We are SO blessed to have had him with us all these years, and been along for the INCREDIBLE ride.
I'll be revisiting early VH concert footage this evening... as I'm sure many of you will also.Early Eddie is how I'll ALWAYS remember him.
Every human being has it ups and downs and ed was no exception...BUT i´m very proud to lived in a time when eddie was alive and made pure rock music. Hendrix was already gone when i was born (1980), and never was my hero. Not because i didn´t liked him but i think every generation has its insperation. Thats why eddie was my hendrix and i´m grateful for his influence not only because his style but also in terms of development of amps and guitars. Look at this huge impact he created for us...(Frankenstrat, Floyd Rose, EBMM EVH, Peavey 5150, Peavey/EVH Wolfgang...)
God bless you >Edward Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen. in my opinion, the most innovative guitarist since Jimmi Hendrix.
+darin demark Don't forget Stevie Ray Vaughan!
+cujothedogofwar Jimi had said that ZZ Topp's Billy Gibbons was the next great! I say SRV!
+cujothedogofwar LOOOOOVE S.R.V. R.I.P.
i say Jason becker
+cujothedogofwar srv was everything but not innovative... come on
We love Less and we love Eddie, forever in our hearts 💕 thank you both
Fingers not likely to ever be forgotten. Rest In Peace Eddie? No! Have a rocking rest of time playing with those who’ve passed before ye.
-Put Eddies Busy on Mt. Rushmore 🔥🔥🔥
Miss you both ,,,,,Mr.Les Paul and Mr. Edward Van Halen your music will forever worth more than silver and gold ,,,,, its a treasure, a blessing ,, a music manual for generations to come , thank you and R.I.P Eddie n Paul😎😍
This guy leaving Earth really hurt. Really hurt. Talent gifted from God
I'm so grateful to have seen Eddie live 4 times. Started listening to Van Halen in the fall of 1979 and was blown away. RIP to the King of ten fingers on six strings 🎸. The Mozart of our time. ✌️👍⚡️
His humility...and respect for Les was. the sign of a great artist. My goodness could he raise the bar of anyone on the stage with him. Can`t shake this death of someone I never knew, this time...
Les Paul loved Eddie.
He said there were only three that KNEW how to make a guitar.
Eddie Van Halen, himself (Les Paul) and Fender.
Every Eddie Van Halen moment I watch and/or hear and I’m on the verge of tearing up and the only thing that’s stopping me is my smile- GOD BLESS KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!
Never be another Eddie Van Halen his playing and creativity was very special
Jan Hammer, Tony Levin, Eddie Van Halen and Les Paul on the same stage. Too much talent in one place. Thanks for posting!
Ha, I KNEW that was Levin on bass!
@@jasonvancleve8140 yeah that Music Man Bass was the dead giveaway. Anybody know who was on drums?
I feel like EVH could do this any day of the week, no practice, no warm up, with any musicians. And he'd still come out on top!
@R Zarc half true
Who could forget Tony Levin on bass.
RIP Eddie.
That’s what I noticed also. Going between Robert Fripp & Adrian Belew to Eddie Van Halen says a lot about his abilities. Maybe more so than all three of those guitarists.
How about Jan Hammer, eh?
F
Yes, Mr. Van Halen is the master of the rock guitar and that fact will remain until the end of time.
Rest in peace good sir.
We mortals miss you every single day.
Eddie playing guitar and TONY frickin' LEVIN backing him up on the bass! Just WOW!!!
Tony! Before the Stick.......
@Chris Goodayle Definitely!
I thought it was him just amazing to see them play off each other
Eddie shows great admiration for Les Paul Eddie was just an all-around great human being
I was in attendance for this show.
My brother was a limo driver in NYC . Eddie Van Halen was his client for the night. This was after a concert. Eddie was in local bar near Madison square garden. My brother sat in car on street for hours while Eddie spent hours with the teenage fans . Eddie was down to earth. Many stars have no time for fans Eddie was different.
GOAT easily.
He has inspired millions. Yes, very sad that he’s gone. But similar to the way I felt when we lost Bowie: grateful that I occupied this small speck of dust at the same time he did. Thank you for everything.
This gives me chills. Heaven just got another guitar God.
No he’s in van heaven now rocking al the ones that went befor us , God is the boss thank be to Jesus, hay God say high to Eddie Van Halen for me, praise Jesus Christ amen thanks BigAl California.
I just got the chills look down and somebody replied I just got the chills always been my favorite guitarist going to miss him but keep playing his great music
EVH could swing like no other rock n rock guitarist ever.
Dead on and most people miss that completely if they even know what it is to begin with.
I love God for many reasons but definitely for having these people bring joy to everyone through music and inspiration. Amen. 🙏
Amen.
MUSIC Brings People together. no mater who you are on the earth. Animals also.
EVeryone who has stepped into a recording studio owes Les Paul a HUGE Thank you for inventing Multi track recording, among other things
There's Eddie and then there's everybody else. Kudos to Jan Hammer and Tony Levin for keeping up! Props to all of them...that was an awesome jam.
Tony Levin on Bass?
@@CheshireTomcat68 You are correct sir! My bad.
Hendrix, Page, Clapton are the original guitar gods (Jeff Beck honourable mention), but Eddie is in a class by himself.
@@Movie-Collectibles JB can smoke all of those with EVH being the only one close. Page has admitted many times JB was better than everyone in England and far more technically proficient, Clapton not even close.
@autk Gary Moore was even Better !
I can't believe Ed Van Halen is gone! There will never be a guitarist like him. RIP Ed. We and this world will miss u!!
You know it's interesting to me how some - not all - but some of the younger generation are so ignorantly quick to dismiss EVH, having NO IDEA that all the stuff their modern day guitar heros can do came largely from this guy. He was doing things with the guitar that no one, anywhere, had ever heard before. EVH is the biggest game changer in the history of guitar, period.
I don’t think anybody has ever written off Eddie
@@jasonmf my best friend’s husband did.. he couldn’t stand Eddie.. but I think maybe he was jealous? lol
To say that he is the biggest game changer in guitar history is a blatant lie.
@@chrismarple a lie? hmmm...are you the Kind Arbiter of who did and did not influence rock guitar? Eddie is widely regarding as one of the biggest gamechangers, ever, by the very best players. So you have an "opinion". You're not in a position to call anyone else a liar.
@chrismarple you are seriously lacking in the intelligence market if you don't think he's an ikon of the game-changer in the guitar playing market. The proof needed is him playing for a benefit in honor of Les Paul. It's in front of your face and you still can't figure it out!!!!! Your showing your intelligence and flattering it is not. Your IQ must be somewhere around the level of Generic Bean Dip!!!
I tell people to this day : I seen a video of Eddie VH walk out on stage and gives Les Paul a kiss on the cheek, nobody believes me 🎸
I remember seeing this on hbo at like 2am when I was like 8 years old and couldn’t sleep. I never saw it again until now.
Strange timing!
it s a hard life
When he is goofing around with other instrumentalists like this, improvising, you get the sense of just how sharp he was. I mean dead on the beat with every note, perfect timing and taste and mix with the others, and masterful switch between rhythm and lead at any given millisecond.
I agree. On a level no will can match. JOE SATRIANI said HE HAS THE BEST RIGHT HAND IN THE BUSINESS
Can really just hear the guitar talking like the guitar had its own language, so sad he’s gone, fly high ed!
His playing seemed a deliberate over the top train wreck that we were fascinated to watch and listen to because he was in total control. We loved the sweet classical and the screaming chaos then he would place our feet safe on the ground. Thank you for the ride and thank you for the recordings so we can do it all over again....and again
Wolfgang we all feel for you my friend. God bless you and your father. I know it's not easy. But many of us understand and support you.
Wow you explained the experience perfectly :)
RIP Eddie October 6, 2020. Thank you for being part of my generation’s music. Now it’s the angels turn.
MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY!!
No one, and I mean "NO ONE" rocked out better than the legendary, Edward Van Halen!!!
God rest his soul 😀
The mad scientist and his disciple. Both legendary men change the way music is played!!!!! May both Legends rest in peace. They are both Changed music forever🎸👍💯🙏
Too short! One of the best performances I have seen by EVH. He blended so seamlessly with Jan Hammer, I would have loved to have seen more of that. Just like Jeff Beck did with Jan!
Two guitar gods, one making the other possible, and the other one taking it further. Eddie's face shining and so happy from 0:08 when kissing Les Paul and then smiling at his guitar god father. So much affection and recognition again from 6:30
Eddie really was a humble man.
Les Paul has created great stuff for the music world. EVH truly loved him. So sweet of EVH!
This is one of the greatest moments of guitar history folks 🎸
Jan Hammer on keys, Tony Levin on bass, EVH on six-strings : wow.
Doesn't get any better than that. Would have been interesting if he had decided to release a solo album with some talent backing him up.
Too bad that band sucked : ) -- POWERHOUSE
Who was on the kit? I didn't recognize him.
Fantastic lineup! If only they recorded and toured, too. Who's the drummer?
@@MickDunne100 Just found him: Jerry Marotta
He was the first rock guitar player that I saw growing up in 80's that smiled when he played and I always admired that, rest in peace Eddie ✌️
Honestly, it makes it better when you can tell that HE'S having fun. At least during Eddie's day though rock and roll (especially Van Halen) was allowed to be fun, before everyone went power ballad or grunge.
Les Paul has gotta be one of the most common names that people have heard but have no idea who he was or what he did for the world of not just guitar, but recording itself, RiP Les 🎸
Hearing Les Paul say "Eddie, go get 'em." was just fucking awesome.
Eddie is sober on stage, he must’ve really respected Les Paul and wanted to be proper
Wow. First time I've ever seen this. EVH and Mr. Les Paul himself on stage together.
Too cool. Rest in Peace Eddie and Les. We miss you
RIP Eddie Van Halen. Rock 'n Roll Heaven just got a helleva guitarist.
he's jamming with Michael Jackson!
Hell man. He's running with the Devil. 🤘
Michael Adamonis god I hope not
Michael Adamonis Michael Jackson is still alive lmao
Paul Fairbanks Hendrix Stevie and bb long and neil and jaco are acceptable Michael no no
I mean.... like if this isnt already so HUGE... with two Guitar Gods on stage.... then Eddie GIves Les the special LOVE and a statement of thanks to Les. THIS is what I always feel is so missing nowadays... is APPRECIATION for what and WHO has come before you. God bless you both...Les .... and Eddie... jammin together on the big stage in the sky. Long live rock... long live MUSIC!!
Gah, I miss him. Follow a dude long enough, and he starts to almost feel like family.
Eddie was the last of his kind, a gentle man bent on becoming the best guitar player on earth and still humble enough to be simple around people...
Much respect for you my friend.. You truly hit the nail on the head with those words. 👍🇺🇲
Love the mutual respect. Music has no boundaries. Wish everything was that way.
One thing that I always loved about Eddie was that even though he was such an amazing pioneer and icon on making sounds and had every cause to be an overstuffed egomaniac, he was just a super cool guy who always looked like he was having a blast doing what he was gifted to do
I thought he was gonna being playing a Les Paul special lmao, was i the only one?
Predating Liquid Tension Experiment..
Tony Levin is a Beast on the Bass, as is Jan hammer on the Keys.
I always wonder what an all instrumental album by the great Edward Van Halen would have sounded like, and this gives me an idea,
Even as it did 32 years ago, this performance STILL floors me today.
RIP Edward Van Halen.
The Wild Life soundtrack is an all instrumental album by Eddie. Haven’t seen the movie, but the soundtrack is pretty cool! It’s nothing but Eddie playing guitar and keyboard. Just type in “Wild Life Soundtrack” and you’ll see it.
@@lucaswickiser6874 oh didn't know about that.
Will do, thank you!
This was some of the best EVH I have seen/heard.
Two lovely guys with a magicians’s touch. Eddie and Les. How special we were to have seen them both.
