  • If you're suffering from sciatica, you might be wondering how exercise can naturally fix sciatica. Oftentimes, people don't know what kind of exercises to do, and they don't get the right guidance on how to change them over time. But they'll get some relief from doing stretches, and even taking pain medications.
In some cases, injections and even surgery are done. But it's not natural. There are some side effects and consequences. And in some cases, it doesn't even work to get the injections or surgery. But exercise consistently helps sciatica problems. I'm going to give you the details about how that works today, in case you're wondering how exercise might benefit your specific sciatica issue.
First, let's begin by talking about the root problem of sciatica issues. In 9 out of 10 cases, that we see here in the clinic at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy, there's some joint issue that has set off this sciatica problem.

Thank you. I have been moderately doing some of your exercises to see which ones I can tolerate, and I must say my pain has gone from a 7 to a 4. I am convinced to follow up with a professional physical therapist to help me get to a 0. I used to be so active and I miss it.

Very helpful! Finding these videos has been life changing! I live in the UK. If only I could go to be treated by you. I have had really painful sciatia for 3 months now. I've been to all the professionals treating sciatia in my local region. NO-ONE has mentioned exercises for my glutial muscles! I've had the best advice from watching these video with almost instant improvement. Thank you so much! It all makes so much sense! I can't thank you enough!❤

Same here! I've been to PT's and none of them suggested anything about the glutes! And they all had me on exercises that he said not to do, also!! Crazy!!!

Thank you for more information. The problem is finding someone that knows what they are doing. A Physical Therapist made me worse having me do many of the exercises you have said I shouldn't do. I now have bursitis in the hip 8 months out from hip replacement. So I have multiple issues, hip bursitis, a knee that is not in the same place comparing it to the other leg, and now the knee and calf are hurting, plus a back that is not good with a sciatica impingement. Where does one start? If I was in El Paso, I would be at your clinic - I don't trust any PT person any longer.

Same here, started 6 months ago. Elizabeth, have you had success with any method or treatment. My hip-arthritis (probably includes lumbar-bone spurs) and sciatica on right side of my body just seems worse. Though, I admit, my stretches have concentrated on the hip joint & muscles. I think I only aggravated sciatica & made it worse. Any progress for you?

So informative....very helpful in understanding why I had a sciatica problem. I always tried to figure out why I had the problem a couple months ago, but going to physical therapy got rid of it. I just want to make sure that I keep doing the right exercises at home now.

I think you know what you are talking about. I have been suffering since last June. I have numbness all the way to my foot after a deep injection at L5 S1 as I was in so much pain I couldn't bend over. I think my nerve was injured. I am trying to avoid surgery. I did go to HSS in NYC. The dr felt it would resolve. It is so bothersome. PT made it worse. Thank you for your help. Thinking about Texas as my dtr lives in Dallas. I think you could help me.

I think i know the answer to this based on looking online but....I have bad sciatica that seems to be getting better slowly. I'm a cyclist and absolutely love it. Haven't been on the bike in over a month. Should i avoid cycling or spin class?

Hey Scott, great question! Sorry to hear that you are dealing with this sciatica :( It may be a good idea to avoid cycling or spin class for the time being until you can get proper control with your glutes. We have a great playlist of videos specifically made for helping people with sciatica problems. In case you are interested in learning more, here is a link:

I’ve watched your diagnostic videos and still can’t tell if I have planter fasciitis or a sciatica issue. 30 yr old F, foot pain for 12 months. Sometimes feels like a walking on a pebble/bruised, sometimes feels like pulling under the foot. Only just started to get pain up into my knee, glutes, and tightness in my hip/groin region. Podiatrist immediately thought planter fasciitis but none of the conventional treatments have helped (strapping, stretching the calf etc, icing, massage to ‘break up’ under the foot, orthotics)
    🤷‍♀️

Ash, have same problem, but have numbness too. Cannot sit for too long as it aggravates my right glute. I did stretches, but just seem to make it worse. Walking does help the rest of the sciatica problem for as long as the foot holds up. Any ptogress on your end?
