Genuine question. How have they put a monetary value on emotional distress, and how are all the figures so different.
There are jury instructions on how to determine damages
I was thinking the same..
@@dh5380 Ah okay. I was just thinking it’s cruel to say that somebody has suffered more than somebody else
They weighed the personal testimonies and details from expert testimony as well as the steps various families have had to take to get a semblance of safety.
@@LongbranchOlivetti it’s how you actually can compensate someone for emotional damages. It’s unfair as heck
When am I going to get emotional damage compensation for being lied to about Iraq and losing parts of my body as a result?

For everyone cheering about this how do you feel about OAN's case being thrown out against Rachel Maddow after it was determined she is an opinion show and is not responsible for what she says on her show? Seems to completely contradict what was done here. You don't have to like Alex Jones to realize this is not right.
Yea whoever thinks this is “fair and just” is out of their mind.
There’s no such thing as freedom of speech anymore unfortunately
Of course it was. If you saw much of this trial, especially at the beginning, you would be shocked that this is going on in the United States. Remember, Alex Jones was NEVER found to have defamed anyone. He never had a trial on defamation.
If Alex were a Marxist democrat none of this would have come to trial.
Funny. This was the exact same argument and wording in defense of Tucker Carlson… the defense that his program is an opinion show.
Also, how does that OAN/Maddow situation relate to (let alone contradict) Alex Jones having to pay an exorbitant amount for intentionally spreading slander and misinformation about a mass shooting?
This reminds me of previous high-profile cases. The only way to beat someone like that is to rack up the costs to the point that he will be broke until the end of time.

It comes from basic addition of the compensatory damages rewarded to each plaintiff
Alex Jones in the hallway- “I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!!!”
Plaintiffs are already ahead of him on that (per NPR) and have already served notice that they intend to pursue the damages in bankruptcy court as primary debtors and as such would be first in line as the court liquidated his assets to pay the debt. He is only allowed to keep a minimum amount of assets such as one "servicable" car and a house that will meet his family's BASIC needs, etc. He's not going to get out from under this by weaseling the courts
@@TonyM1961 Good!!
@@TonyM1961 but after bankruptcy all his debt will be pardoned?
@@CrystaliaV Depends on what kinds of debt he owes. Some kinds are debt are forgivable in bankruptcy and some are not. I am not familiar with Connecticut law, so please don't quote me as some kind of end all, be all expert. In general though, one example of a forgivable debt would be credit card debt, while, for instance, student loans are not. However, in most states (every one that I have read on anyway), court costs, attorney fees and financial penalties are not forgivable so yes, he most likely will have to pay the awards as directed by the court. He does have the right to appeal today's decision, but (in my opinion) that would be a waste of money since he's highly unlikely to succeed. How does someone's opinion on a situation cause them to pay $1 billion in damages? Did he kill the kids, did he send these people to kill the kids? I really don't understand
Pretty simple actually. Alex Jones lied about murdered children and their parents, for the sole purpose of making himself rich. Now he will have to pay for those lies. What is not to understand?
Just came here to say to Alex: “HA HA!”
Words matter and misinformation hurts those who have already endured enough!

Does this mean I can sue CNN for $100 trillion? You hurt my feelings money; I sue you for trillion dollars.
Why such an absurd number? Why not make it reasonable so he can actually pay it in his lifetime and the families see some money?
Because he deserves much worse.
After this ruling, Kyler Rittenhouse needs to sue any media and any high profile celebrity that still calls him a murderer
Watch his trial be treated alot differently.
kylie rittenhouse is a murderer
Didnt he kill someone??
Defamation is very hard to prove. You have to go out of your way to represent lies as the truth. It's not enough to be confused and correct yourself or to state an opinion. The MSM train their staff to avoid defamation because they've all been sued and lost before. Jones just didn't take that seriously and now he's being forced to.
I don’t think Rittenhouse met the standards for defamation. It was getting quite close tho.

I wonder how many times these parents wished Jones was telling the truth, and that their loves ones, never truly died on that tragic day. It wasn't enough that they lost their childrens, but also had to endure for years, the torments of being called "liars" and others form of harassment from strangers that more likely have no childrens or never lost one (No loving parents want to see their kids leave this world first) because some selfish "profit-taker" is making money from their misery. I don't see that money as a "compensation" to them, since life can't be bought back. I instead see it as a "Nail" on Jones's foot for stepping where he shouldn't have.
I think you mean “fateful”, there was nothing faithful about that day.
Also "never" instead of "mever"...and "loves ones" instead of "son" (to be more specific). Thanks, I am just glad Alex Jones got hit where it hurts him the most, and by a lot. My question to him now is... *Was it worth it?* I hope he is paying more than he made those past 10 years selling products he himself probably doesn't use.
@Nadav Guy *"Fateful"* depends on how it is used. I am sure some readers understand that it has a negative meaning in this case, but I will use *"tragic"* instead to better communicate with everyone.
@Nadav Guy 🤔🤔.. I don't get it..😑

For a cowardly attack on grieving mothers and fathers after they lost their children for profit, this is justice
$1 billion is not justice. It is maximum revenge and greed! Could have understood $1million per victim. $1 billion doesn't make any sense. Even murderers have to pay much less.
@@jimj2683 The point is to bankrupt this corrupt man so that his fascist "media" company built on pain and lies dissolves.
how is this justice, having to pay people a billion a dollars for talking about conspiracy theories is laughable, the money doesnt exist as alex jones doesnt even have 10 million so why not make it 200 billion, he would have had to pay less if he had committed the mass shooting himself
Robbie Parker thinks it's funny.
Definitely Russian bot
Why didnt they just sue the sandy hook shooter for damages? This just seems like extra steps
Makes absolutely no sense. How can there not be a cap on the amount you owe in damages? The same way there's a cap on how long you'll serve for certain crimes.
Will they actually see any of that money I doubt it
His assets will be frozen and sold. These families now own Infowars
Oh, they will see some of it. It will be a fraction of the initial award, and it will take 5-10 years, but they get a share.

nah, he has been lowering his prices to decrease his profits, cause the profits the only means they get paid, THEY GET absolutely nothing, maybe $25 a year if that. Remember Free Speech Systems already went through a Bankruptcy matter, all the creditors can get are 25% of the annual profits, and they have to be split up between all creditors and liabilities. They get nothing. Alex JONES gets the last laugh, cause thanks to the Bankruptcy Ruling, Free Speech gets to stay open, if they shut down, they get nothing. All that happens is the COURT now places a Judgement or Lien against the company. If and when it closes, the creditors get their share of the profits/royalties from the closing or the sale of the company. ALEX JONEs will keep the doors open, take his paycheck each year, and invest as much of the excessive profits back into the company.

What about all of the politicians and news reporters claiming there were weapons of mass destruction in the middle east?
Which lead to millions of deaths in the middle east over the past two decades, which lead to terrorist attacks in the West and the death of Westerners?
I'm a Westerner, I hate terrorism but you can see what I'm saying and where I'm going with this.
We speak, there's a reaction.
Where do you draw the line with this?
What about when a weather forecast says it's going to be a sunny day tomorrow, someone watches this forecast and plans a picnic the following day.
Scenario - it rains, that someone who watched the previous days weather forecast is driving to the picnic area, skid pans on a puddle on the road and has a head on collision with another vehicle, wipes out several people.
Who's liable? The news station made a profit from that forecast, the news reporter got paid, the information provided was incorrect, people died due to an individual getting behind the wheel based of false information.
We speak, there's a reaction.
Alex Jones's words didn't cause any death to the Sandy Hook's victims families, he wasn't the only individual online that was saying something similar to what he was saying regarding the shooting.
He didn't order attacks on anyone, he was simply giving his opinion and encouraging curiosity.
Not defemation as the news was just reporting information that they got from Bush's administration. The families of soldiers can't sue the governement as the soldiers signed a contract that pretty much states that the government can deploy them any where in the world for any reason even if it's a complete lie.
