Swap that 20R for a 20RE with P/S and a 4 speed. Least that's if you REALLY want a decent no hassle ride overall. Solar panel might be a good investment and a camper top if thats your gig.
"We got no rear brakes, the battery is overcharging and boiling over, my inverter burned up, we're leaking coolant, we're leaking oil, i have no heater because i had to bypass my heater core, i got dash lights on..but i am super stoked with the Toyota...its doing great" ....LOL...Thats AWESOME...such a positive guy.
Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark...and we're wearing sunglasses. Jake: Hit it. 😎 -from “The Blues Brothers” (1980)
Good day Mr Redline. I live in South Africa and here Toyota is like what Chevy is for America. True story is that my mother was born on the back of a Hilux next to the road because my grandfather did not make it to the hospital in time. They lived on a farm that was about 2 hours away from the nearest hospital. I used to own a 1985 Fj45 4.2 straight 6 petrol Land Cruiser that I rebuild from the ground up. It took me almost 10 years to do so as parts has been discontinued a long time ago. I recently sold it and bought a 2016 model 79 Land Cruiser V6 4.0 petrol. I just love Toyota. They are tough and reliable. Keep up the Good work.
As a 70's mini trucker from Cali you might be interested to know the Toyota was not even on the map. The Datsun was the most popular followed by the Courier and Luv. We didn't have any Toyota's in our club. I have a museum quality 73 V8 Luv in my garage now.
I have heard the 18R engines prefer higher octane gas. 18RC liked 86 . Try a few gallons to find out ? Also you keep mentioning another engine. My cousin had a truck same year as yours manual trans. Yellow. He rebuilt motor and put bigger tires on it. Big tires zapped power. He changed cam, carb , intake and exhaust. Made a difference. It was acceptable off road after mods. May be interesting. My cousin did this back in 1985 so there may be more or less power mod parts available now.
I had a similar overcharging problem with my 1979 Toyota Pickup. Turns out that they made 2 different alternators and two different voltage regulators. The right voltage regulator has to be paired with the right alternator or else the alternator will overcharge the battery. Apparently one was a north american cold weather addition. It took a new voltage regulator and a couple of tries with the alternator to get it right. The numbers on the back of the alternator have to be right, not the wrong one with a wiring harness attached that supposedly switches the wires around. That did not work.
Just found your videos. Great work on what you done to get her going again. We just spent the last few years redoing our 73 Hilux, only 49K. Been in the family since new. They only came with 4 speed, didn't come out with the 5 speed till about 77. Oh yeah the looks you get when your out in it, feels great knowing all the work we put into it. All I have left is to recover the seat. Say anyone know where the horn relay is located on the 73? that's the only thing I can't get working.
You did a great job swapping the manual trans. in the hilux. I see your dog in your videos sometimes. What’s his name?? You should introduce him sometime.
Oh yeah my cousin also made his 73 Hilux disc brake. They make or at least used to make a kit. A LOT of people modded these trucks. I was born in 1971 so remember when they were popular and everywhere. Damn good little trucks.
Awesome video, The speed limits in 73 topped out at 55 (gas crisis) so you were definately pushing the envelope. That paint will come around with a little elbow grease. 👍😎🔥
Man that truck looks just like my Chevy LUV I had in high school. Even the e-brake is the same. I think the LUV had an Isuzu motor with a 4 speed. We filled the bed with pea gravel once and got the front end off the ground. We put in bucket seats raised up on 2x4's. The height give a little more leg room. I'm 6ft and its tight in those cabs.
I suppose you could have stopped by Napa Auto Parts in Chama to see if they might have a voltage regulator for the truck. I know it's an outside shot but it's possible.
How good is the Hilux with the leaks over charging it still made once described as been unbreakable reliable and indestructible well th8s long drive prooves it
owned a 1970 hi-lux spent a lot of time in the junk yard pulling parts - every nut and bolt broke or striped out - truck could not keep up on the highway even 40 years ago
I’m just about to drive a first gen 4runner from one side of Australia (Brisbane) to the other (Perth) OVER 4000 km’s. After buying sight unseen. I will do a service on it before hand but she’ll make it no worries 👌 I love a good road trip adventure in an “untested car” I will be documenting it on my RUclips channel “Shed to Beach” Love your videos mate you have a new subscriber from Australia 🇦🇺 Also love Padricks videos at Elevated Overland, been subscribed to him for a while, 👍
Sooner than later I will, but also, I’ve got other projects coming up that are taking a bit of my spare money and I don’t daily drive this or need it to be super reliable.
3.4 swap it. More truck power, more cruise friendly, probably better mpg than what it gets now and ive never seen it done so it will be something a bit different
Hey there! I appreciate you reaching out and sent you a message! If you don’t receive my text, I also have an email that you can reach out to, RedlineranchYT@gmail.com! I seriously appreciate the hilux and I’m honored to be able to give it the attention and love it needs!
2 months and you don't repair the simplest thing? at least a new alternator right? or a window, a simple 20 dollar radio, those things can be repaired in a couple of hours. poor truck
I’d never cut the dash up for a 20$ radio, a rear window and seal is almost impossible to find, and the alternator over charging was found on this trip. It’s gotten more attention and maintenance in the last 2 months than the previous 20 years. Plus with more than 10 vehicles to maintain and work on I’d say it’s getting more than it’s fair share of attention.
What would you do to make this a better road tripper?
Rubbing compound & Wax. Maybe a roof rack :b OH and those Japanese style side view mirrors that go up on the fenders.
An 8 track stereo.
Swap that 20R for a 20RE with P/S and a 4 speed. Least that's if you REALLY want a decent no hassle ride overall. Solar panel might be a good investment and a camper top if thats your gig.
Please put the turbo motor in it and let it eat !!! Thank you for doing these videos, I feel like I’m living through you.
A CB radio would be period perfect.

It’s all about the attitude! Gotta look on the positive side of things

I just bought a Hilux 1973 long bed, interior in amazing shape. It’s my dream truck.
They are awesome trucks!

That was a slogan for Toyota in the 70s and 80s,"Who could ask for anything more,Toyota "!
When your alternator is overcharging use the high beams on the headlights, it will consume some of that overpower.
I shoulda switched them on, didn’t even think about it!
What would you do to make this a better road tripper? Rainex the windshield. Makes a big difference.
And wipers!!
Cheap repair tip: Put a plastic bag in the overflow jug to use as a liner so it won't leak.
Good thought!
Day immediately better when I see a new Redline Ranch video posted
That’s so awesome to hear! Week made hearing that!

Really enjoying the chronicles of this little truck. Oughta' throw a new air filter on it as a treat for being so good on the trip.
I plan to give it a bit of love after the trip! A hood shakedowns the best way to find the issues
Those air filters are reusable. Wash it, let it dry and put new oil on it
That bed is actually in suprisingly good shape.
The bed is almost perfect!
Just found your channel and watched maybe six episodes. Really enjoy the hilux hope to see more as you go along
Absolutely love and miss my little Hilux!!!
Pretty cool truck alright. I had about the same year Corolla that I used to deliver pizza once. That car was one of the coolest cars I owned.
I happen to know a thing or two about older Corollas too! More on that soon hopefully 👀
I'm so old. I learned to drive in one of those Corollas, in 1981. It was almost new at the time.
great way to start my "sunday" morning :D

NOW time to drive to North Central Florida to deliver it to me to buy !
That would be one hell of a trip!

Dude ! Did I just see you in a grindhard plumbing video cruising Moab in a Humvee ?
Yes, it was super rad! Such a fun adventure 🤘🏼
@@redlineranch. right on !👍🏻 seemed like a rad adventure!
Loved the video 👍 I’ve got a 1985 Toyota Pickup that I love to drive . Can’t wait for the next video
What an adventure, part fun part squeeze ass part worry part stress but totally something to remember plus you got it on video,😊😊
Had a little bit of everything on the trip!
Nice guy and good calm content. Keep going bro. Your subscriber from Kazakhstan.
The only issue I have with old trucks is the small space, are you comfortable driving long distances?
@@HK-uq9by it’s okay for a while but after 2 days of driving or so it does get a bit tight feeling
Awesome video, The speed limits in 73 topped out at 55 (gas crisis) so you were definately pushing the envelope. That paint will come around with a little elbow grease. 👍😎🔥
I think it’s got potential to shine up nice!
Another great video bro! You passed through my hometown of Española! Hope you feel better btw.
So cool! I’m feeling way better, appreciate that!
nice video! I saw a 3rd generation corolla in the intro!
just wondering,, the 1st part of this hilux73 was automatic transmission,, how come now its manual? did i miss anything?
Yes, in my previous video I manual transmission swapped the truck!! Go check it Hinton my channel!
Right on !💪🏻
🤘🏼
Great road trip and video😀
Glad you enjoyed it, was a blast to film!
How much was the Hilux wen u buy it?

Great Video ! Looking Forward To Next One Where You Tackle The Little Things That Cropped Up During This Trip ! Have A Great Day ! 🙂🙂🙂🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯
with your camera
We Arabs and Africans love the Toyota Hilux truck for its reliability
❤
They are running circles every day here in Kenya 🇰🇪
Love that!
This goes to show that you just can’t kill a TOYOTA!!!!
You really can’t
Can't believe the battery didn't explode, I think they do sometimes when they over charge
Vents were doing their job for sure!
Nice truck, man. Drop a 1 or 2uz in there someday.
Maybe one day, that’d be a wild rig!
You got guts.

6:22 red light in the dash bro
Yeah. He said the truck brakes were an issue. I have driven to LA from San Bernardino with no rear brakes, just had to keep from tailgating.😂
Wasn’t too bad, and the seemed to “self bleed” as the trip went on lol
It’s a Toyota we gonna meals it 🤣💪🏽👊🏽
💪🏼
Replace that coolant bottle with a proper coolant bottle
It’s on the ever growing list!!
Yes that's a great conference on the vicle
🤘🏼
Oh put a crowbar in your wallet and buy new tires!
Sooner than later I will, but also, I’ve got other projects coming up that are taking a bit of my spare money and I don’t daily drive this or need it to be super reliable.
Hey More content for you in future, you can make videos on fixing all of theese bits.
Definitely going to get it all fixed up again!
Impressive can you finish it and send it for me?...lol
3.4 swap it. More truck power, more cruise friendly, probably better mpg than what it gets now and ive never seen it done so it will be something a bit different
that would be fun, I was thinking 3rz swap it because I have a spare engine for it!
Hey there, former owner here - lost your contact info, so if/when you see this reach out! I have the rear window for the cab and the owner’s manual. 😊
Hey there! I appreciate you reaching out and sent you a message!

Great vid , next time for throat try something spicy or cayenne pepper with pineapple, at least ut helps me..
Good to know! I’ve never lost my voice before so I’ll Keep that in mind for next time!
Man get yourself a bottle of RainX no need for wipers then, see good and wind blows rain of at faster speeds.
That’s a great thought!
The toyota is great ,
Needs a tappet adjustment
It’s definitely getting some attention after doing so well on the trip!
Hit that windshield with some RainX
I thought you two looked related!
Just a little lol
Hey kid, 80 is way too fast for that old truck.
Not fast enough if you ask me!
❤🥰👍🤘
🤘🏼🤘🏼
Your speedo is off by a mile because your truck is running wheels and tires from a car.
Actually it’s from the transmission swap I did! When I took out the automatic and put the manual in it changed the speedometer input.
