@@markbade565 Yeah had that issue also and my FK7 was brand new off the trailer. I'm the only owner of this vehicle so it's like this from the factory. I went with the full upgrade so I could adjust as needed, I originally got an upgrade for the stock from another company just the extention piece for it and the 4 new bolts and hardware to lock the stock assembly down, not bad for a cheaper upgrade on stock but I wanted something more and since you have to pull the center console it's better just to get the stage 3 kit worth ever penny.

With all the play it is less firm, in both good and bad. If you are on a chill mood, not trying to shave thousandths, then the OEM probably feels much more comfortable. But if you are racing hard, you want the shifter to feel quick and clear in what it does.
@@mcnoobdestroyer I don't know if that's a good thing, this conditions you to force the shifter. A lot of transmissions usually resist you a bit if you're entering the wrong gear, and you can quickly realize wrong gear cause it won't go in like usual. But this stiffer shift just makes you force every shift.
@@PURENT I had the same thought about the force part..Seems like the new shifter requires way more force to even "select" a gear, unlike the smooth shifting experience from oem....Also, it surprises me how many manual drivers who focus on their shifts so much don't know that they can get the oem shifter to be tons more firmer with just a little effort and "tweaking".
@@kio51423 what you are talking about is mechanical advantage, which changes with the throw. reducing slop is always a good thing, you can get it pretty good with an oem shifter but never perfect and often they are non servicable
They are demonstrating slop for the side to side. You still have a neutral throw. But no wasted play. You will never go back to a factory shifter after you do this.
Fun fact one of my mates drove my car for the first time today. We both drive manuals however his has a short shifter and mine doesn’t and he actually couldn’t use my gearbox. He said it was like stirring bathwater. Now to be fair my gearbox is terrible but I didn’t think it was that bad. The biggest problem is the clutch which is slipping and has a biting point so high it has burns up on reentry when you push it back down.
My first car was a manual Renault scenic from 2005, in 2020 I started driving it it was fine. In 2022 I got my ND1 mx5 2016 model and the shifter and clutch pedal was soo different. After getting used to the Miata, when I drove the old Renault again I just couldn't, I had to guess in which gear I'm in, there was no feel at all. But this is normal, a very worn out shifter vs a pretty new and of a sports car shifter are of course wildly different. The worst was when I had to go up a hill from standstill. It was no problem before, but after the Mazda I really had to fight 😂

I understand mine is a completely different shifter, manufacturer and transmission. Installing a Barton shifter into my 2017 SRT Challenger made for a completely different driving experience. A tight short throw shifter sure does put a smile on your face.

Play is good for reduced stress on the parts. Without any play, it’s prone to fail at some point. Perhaps it’s good for racing where it may be changed out relatively frequently.

Very inexperienced car "enthusiast" here. I drive a bmw e39, and I love everything about it except this. The shifter is quite loose. Is there a way of changing it without the whole gearbox being changed? I assume there is but idk how feasible/expensive it is
Most older manual BMWs can benefit from fresh or upgraded bushings on the selector assembly that’s connected to your shift rod. Those 90s bmw transmissions may also have serviceable detent springs that may also need work to improve the shift feel too. We’re not experts on those shifter mechanisms, but there should be plenty of decent aftermarket upgrades available for your platform to improve your existing setup.

As someone who grew up driving little manual trucks, I personally love the long shift throws and a bit of shifter slop. I’ve tried short throw shifters that are tight as hell and I just don’t prefer it tbh. Seems like I’m the only one who does. Any of yall also share my preference for the sloppy long throw shifters? The longer the shift lever the more fun it is to me lol
Totally get it, and thats why we make our shifters adjustable. What you’re seeing here is our shifter adjusted to the middle of the adjustment range so it’s shorter and tighter to operate when compared to its OEM counterpart. You can adjust the throw to be noticeably longer if you wish, and can extend the shift knob height further up increase throws further too.
I like the wiggles cause when I rode a manual i just gently fast drop my hand on the handles and switch if it were stiff i don’t feel a motion to where the handle were going 😅😅
Yes they do 👍. All of our shifters will fit underneath the center consoles of the cars they’re designed for. You can still retain the stock shift boot and shift knob as well.
Man my buddy club short shifter and bushings helped a lot but nothing as precise as that... The factory shifter has way more slop than your factory demo though so it made the whole car feel so much better to drive.
Glad to hear some upgraded bushings helped improve the shifting experience in your car. Is it a Honda fit? If so we may have a shifter solution in the future for that platform, just hard to gauge an ETA while we’ve got a few R&D projects to finish first but hopefully we’ll have more developments later 2025

The Stock OEM shifter is still pretty good for what it is...Just saying sure you get more crisp shifts out of the Acuity shifter but all in all the OEM still pretty good
Got a 92 Plymouth Laser with the 5 speed (Basically a 1GB Mitsubishi Eclipse), all of my bushings are bad, so in first and second the shifter returns to the middle but stays in gear. Hilarious when my friends ride with me and are like "Why does your shifter have 6 inches of play?"
Ive got the tall version of the mazdashifters angled short throw on my NA, I think they do the 6 speeds too. I had the stick angled to the 8 o’clock position and its so nice. The 5 speeds already shift amazing but I hear the 6 speeds really benefit from the short throw. If you have a sloppy 5 speed just replace the worn out consumable parts of your shifter

Gated shifters feel slower to me, the guides are good for beginners ig. But its like having training wheels. I really need more time with a gated shifter to get faster, but that was my first intial experience going in
All manual 10th gen civics share practically the same shifter but we chose to compare ours with the Si since it has a slightly longer throw and wider gate spacing from the factory than the FK8, but still shorter than the manual base 10th gen civic shifter. So it was a good middle ground for the OEM shifters in that platform to compare to our adjustable short shifter. The FL5 is a completely different shifter design, and we have a shifter in development for that platform.
Brih just replace ur bushings with metal once and u gonna have a very stiff shifter, there is a reason they make them out of plastic, so that there is some give to them to make it easier to get it into gear
You can still shake our short shifters, this video is just showing the slop/play that is reduced with our shifters at the pivot point of the shift lever.

So I've driven standard stick shift since I was 17 and my bil always had modded mine lasted still going strong odometer reads at 118k never changed the clutch or stick and bil is on his 2nd going on his 3rd from 57k to 91k gone through 3 sticks & clutches wow hes throwing away money while I'm saving remember manufacturers don't rely on looks its if the job is done as it should run without any change for a long period they know what's best for that car specifications i saved 10k nj

Remember to change the plastic bushings in your shifters. My MK4 Golf had shifter play and cable slop, so I got some new bushings for cheap from VW.

You need a linkage from a worn out 60s 4 speed ford for comparison, the one i learned to drive on felt like a stick in a 5 gallon bucket of water.
I prefer the back and forth shifter push forward to shift up pull back to shift down best quick shifter ever :3

Gated shifters feel slower to me, the guides are good for beginners ig. But its like having training wheels. I really need more time with a gated shifter to get faster, but that was my first intial experience going in
OEM shifter for me. That would drive me crazy to not be able to confirm neutral.

Why compare it with the Si? Why not the FK8 or FL5?
All manual 10th gen civics share practically the same shifter but we chose to compare ours with the Si since it has a slightly longer throw and wider gate spacing from the factory than the FK8, but still shorter than the manual base 10th gen civic shifter. So it was a good middle ground for the OEM shifters in that platform to compare to our adjustable short shifter. The FL5 is a completely different shifter design, and we have a shifter in development for that platform.
Brih just replace ur bushings with metal once and u gonna have a very stiff shifter, there is a reason they make them out of plastic, so that there is some give to them to make it easier to get it into gear
I don’t care which one is better, those gear are better than the ones from arcade. I always miss shift with thise arcades one
How do I know if I'm in gear if I can't shake the stick !
You can still shake our short shifters, this video is just showing the slop/play that is reduced with our shifters at the pivot point of the shift lever.
If you guys have a short shifter upgrade kit for my old gal 1989 Nissan Sentra 4 speed manual I would definitely buy it and feature it on my incredibly small channel.

We do not, but if you k-swap it we have a few shifter setup options that could work

Yeah but not necessarily for daily driving, it would be tiring to drive something that firm after awhile.
@@user-kj7nw4zg1y the shifter is adjustable, this is one one of the most aggressive settings. also it having no play actually makes it easier as you dont waste any effort taking up slack

So I've driven standard stick shift since I was 17 and my bil always had modded mine lasted still going strong odometer reads at 118k never changed the clutch or stick and bil is on his 2nd going on his 3rd from 57k to 91k gone through 3 sticks & clutches wow hes throwing away money while I'm saving remember manufacturers don't rely on looks its if the job is done as it should run without any change for a long period they know what's best for that car specifications i saved 10k nj
