When I was in the marines, my best friend and I decided we wanted to move to Alaska once our enlistment was over. We ended up driving from San Diego to anchorage Alaska. It was an amazing experience. Both of us used our GI bill to go to the university of Alaska. This was back in 2014. Some of the best days of my life living there.
So appreciative that Mav asked the guy who was walking if he needed anything. I hiked the California Coast and people rarely stopped or when they did, laughed at me for doing it. We need more people like Mav in this world!
2800 miles is 4500km. Driving from Sydney to Perth which is across Australia 🇦🇺 is about 4000km (2486 miles).. That is one insane trip young man. Well done. Also paying forward that German family was such a nice touch, you would of left a great positive energy for their trip.

It can be a priceless learning experience. i just lost my brother and had my truck stolen the same day with tools I collected for over fifty years working on heavy equipment so I know that down feeling real well. When Mav says, "Keep on truckin' " sometimes we have to dig deep to find the way forward.
Depression sucks believe me I know. Been through multiple lost friends and family members, and oh boy it keeps getting hard. Best advice is to express yourself as much as possible and always smile. Thanks Mav for the adventures. I was supposed to go to Alaska in 1998 with my sister, my husband and brother-in-law but my sister was killed in a car wreck in 1997. I’m 72 now and hope one day my sis and I can make that trip! Keep on truckin!❤️
I'm so sorry you lost your sister and never got the chance to drive the Alcan highway. It's truly amazing. I live in Anchorage and have had the privilege of driving it 6 times, including taking the ferry from Bellingham to Skagway. The first time I was 13 in June of 1982. 80% of it was dirt and gravel. Back then people used to make these massive screens they bungeed onto the front of their vehicle to keep from getting the windshields broken by flying rocks. I moved with my family from Sacramento to Anchorage. I've driven it in the summer 3 times, in the fall once and the winter twice. It was amazing every time and I have incredible memories and pictures. I'm actually getting ready to head back to Washington in December and plan on taking the ferry from Skagway to Bellingham. I have one more trip planned next summer when I fly back to drive a uhaul back down to Washington. One day you and your sister will be reunited and make that trip. ❤️🙏

The trip on the Alaska highway is FAR too beautiful to speed through. I planned for 15 days and I wish I had more time. I actually enjoyed going through the Yukon more than all the traveling I did through Alaska. I also went through Glacier National Park which was my favorite part of the whole trip.

I don’t have a truck but I’m currently saving and planning a road trip thru Canada from Michigan to Alaska. It’s 56 hours one way. I will do it in my Chevy Malibu. Thanks for this Mav

I fought forest fire up in Watson lake in the summer of 06’ when they had a busy season. That’s some beautiful landscape up there. Never really gets dark at night in the summer. Kind of cool. Glad you got to see us in Canada

Verrry interesting to see the current Al-Can Highway...... Pa's company (Northrup) transferred him to Anchorage in May 1954..... I was pulled out of 3rd grade a couple weeks early (no biggie), we packed our worldly belongings into a 13' camping trailer and towed it up the Al-Can with our new 1953 Olds 88..... Unlike your trip, there were NO paved roads (well, maybe a couple miles in towns now and then)...... Saw first my snow in Whitehorse (flurries)....Anchorage from '54-'57 had verrrry few paved roads....mostly just downtown (4th-5th-6th Ave, etc) That was the beginning of my life of adventure..... 1966 aboard my first sub in the Navy, I bought a 1956 Caddy hearse for my navy bunk mattress (borrowed) and 9'6" longboard.....Aug. 1967 transferred to another sub in NH, traded my hearse for a 1939 Chevy paddy wagon (Portsmouth PD)....Discharged in May '68, drove paddy wagon to Ft. Liquordale for commercial diving school....Sept. '68, drove to Torrance, CA.....Burned out all the exhaust valves (set too tight), with help from Pa, rebuilt it....Had no money, so had to sell..... More crazy adventures til Sept. '69 started Santa Barbara Silly College~Marine Diving Tech.....Bought a rusty 1961 IH Metro-Mite from my buddy and drove it 2 round trips Santa Barbara to Morgan City, LA summer of '70 to work offshore and '71 after graduation..... Gave up on diving (worked sporadically as tender, workboat deckhand and aluminum shipfitter in winter..... lousy $)....Finally wised up, settled down at 27 in Santa Barbara..... Subscribed and started with your VW camper vids that caught my attention...."this kid looks familiar, but he has way more money than I did at his age"..... Yeppers, y'all are livin' a life of adventure, BUT in the lap of luxury..... When I wuz drivin' across country at 45-50mph in a bread truck, had barely enough $ for gas and an occasional sandwich to get from point A to B (no motels, those were for the wealthy)....That wuz the hippy-dippy days, so my travels weren't abbynormal .... Many times, I had no idea where I was gonna get my next meal, but always scrounged up day jobs..... I’ve driven that route from Sioux Falls SD to Anchorage once before. It’s a pretty boring drive until you get into BC/northwest territories. From that point on its absolutely beautiful.
Just finished going from Winnipeg Mb, to Paris On and back again in 5 days of driving. 2153 kms /1338 miles there and back again. Came back pulling a new RV trailer. No issues for my 01 GMC Sierra c3 AWD 6.0 LQ4 except for a bad ground and a new trailer plug needed to be installed to get the lights working on the trailer. Had a bit of a close call Tuesday night after dark in the Eastern hills near Thunder Bay on the way back with Bullwinkle the Moose, but he kept on trucking past the passenger side of the truck while I was fumbling with the brights after passing a semi-trailer on undivided highway, and trying to hit the woah pedal as quickly as possible with a trailer behind. Chewed a good quarter pound of bottom lip, and spent the next 30 minutes looking for a turnoff to pull over on and get some rest for the rest of the night.
Ahh, the Alcan. Great trip if you get the chance! Pretty easy for most Americans to do now that the covid requirements have been dropped. edit: 12:20 they WERE going extinct, but there have been many programs to rebuild populations. Most of the wood bison in the US are descended from the comparatively vast herds in Alberta. Conservation can work! 13:48 Lee-Ard

I visited Colorado a few months ago, stayed in Estes park, went up into and through the Rockies, then went and “raced” up pikes peak to the severe disapproval of my wife..lol.. and I absolutely LOVED every minute of the mountains and the scenery, meeting people from different parts of the country and world. Man I wish I could do the same as you. And maybe one day I will figure out how. I miss it, though just a brief few days I had. I will go back someday. Sounds weird, but it’s a longing in my being to be in the mountains. Cool kids can have the beaches, gimme the mountains and trees. God bless brother, and safe travels.

Done that many times. Usually 2-3 day trip (1 way) depending on how many breaks you take. Driving through the PNW is beautiful in the summer through fall

I always look forward to you videos. Such great content and your way of doing life is how I and my husband did life on and off for years. We met sooo many interesting ppl and saw such awesome landscape and were able to help when catastrophic events took place, we were there to lend a hand. I don't regret too much, I have to say. A big thing I am realizing in my latter years is that we were so transient, we lost touch and missed out on events with our family and friends. Not all the time but enough. It makes me feel good that you make time to spend quality time with your folks. I like your mom and Dad. It seems that they both have wonderlust as well. Driving is hard work. It will make you soooo tired. When you stop, you still feel the road humming in your body. It really stressees your immune system out so you gotta know how to take care of yourself on the road. I was impressed with your thermometer. Lol. I learned alot on this video about the Rocky Mountains , which are sooooo beautiful. The wildlife was soooo sick and the hot springs, fabulous. wow, such a great episode Mav - really appreciate you sacrificing the sleep time to get some great footage and share your journey with us even though you were time crunched. What an amazing journey. I was blessed recently with a day off to recognize the National Truth and Reconciliation Day here in Canada. I drove up through one of the reserves and stopped at a store that was closed but the owner offered me free product as a kind gesture, then i stopped for a meal and an anonymous person paid for my meal, made me cry.
Made that drive twice from southeastern Idaho for work ,it’s a beast of a road trip, but the sightseeing is some of the best in the world! Have fun on your trip Mav!

"Here's a fun fact for you, your car gets impounded for doing 40 over the speed limit" I literally remember this happening to me in BC with my mustang in McBride. PS here in Canada we call them Provinces, not states lol. Love your vids man! ALSO that bridge that's blown out will be blown out for a couple weeks at least Mav, I work with the biggest Canadian shipping company and the stall that holds the shipments up north to Watson Lake etc etc has been filling up as we can't send nothing up. I drove the ALCAN from Fairbanks back to my home state of Texas back in 1983. I was a radar operator in the Air Force stationed at a radar site just 27 miles northwest of Fairbanks. It's called Murphy Dome. Glad you made the trip safely! Congratulations!

My parents took me on the AlCan highway when it was not paved. I was 10 years old then. I am 70 now..best trip ever. thanks for showing me what it looks like now.
Drove from North Pole AK to Mars Pa in 6 days. Greatest trip in my life. Don't do it if you are a light weight Driver. The Yukon is no joke. Extra tires and fuel and food.

In 1978 my parents and I drove that same road in a pickup truck with slide in camper. What an adventure! Most of the Highway was gravel and 2 lane with trucks flying at you spraying rocks. Tires and windshields suffered. Great trip!

Liard Hotsprings is honestly my favourite place in Canada. And I've been to nine provinces and all three territories (and 49 states, lived in a van, that's another story).
it's amazing with as big a channel as Mav has the revenue no doubt gives him the ability to drive a brand new truck, especially on such a road trip as this, yet he still drives this older Ford pickup. While I wouldn't fault him at all if he decides to buy a newer truck, something about the older truck adds a certain value to these videos! Great content and new subscriber!

He can travel an impressive distance in a couple hours. We were both impressed on our way home how far he had walked in a few hours. I'm going to have to check out his RUclips channel. In Latvia, if you go 50Km/h (30miles) over the limit, they tow your car and you loose your driving license. Then you'll have to go to driving school and start over, to get your license back. They want to make it 30km/h now

I’m an Aussie…drove from San Francisco to Alaska and back in 1998. Went up through Nebraska..Idaho ..Wyoming..Montana..Alberta..BC ..Yukon etc into Alaska at Toc. Down as far as Homer from Anchorage thence back up to as far as Fairbanks.. ( watched the Northern Lights on a pitch black night up in the hills out from latter..beautiful ! ) Seward on the way back. Thence coastal back down to ‘Frisco when able. It was an adventure …far to commercialised now. God’s country back then. Work wise, through aerial hydrographic survey flights visited Sitka, ( magical place..where Michener wrote his book ‘ Alaska ‘ ). Sand Point and Kodiak. Truly, Mother Earth showing her beauty in all its facets. A very humbling experience. I was blessed.

I’ve actually had the general at2 on my 01 4Runner for over 40k and I’ve been really impressed. Road noise is the reason I didn’t get the ko2’s. Had a buddy with the ko2’s on his jeep and they were really loud. I am super happy I went with the generals.

Hey Mav, hello from Alaska. I drove this in 1997 in a 17ft U-Haul towing my car. Welcome to Alaska. When I drove it the roads were ok to drive even though I heard the horror stories of the roads. If your still here, let me know.
Can’t wait to see where you take us to in Alaska. Would love to go there to watch the northern lights. Curious on the route you’ll take back home. If you are not in a hurry, too tired or on a schedule I would highly recommend going to Banff and Jasper in Canada on the way home to see Lake Louise and the ice fields and other sights. Went there as a teen and thought those mountains were the true meaning of majestic.
Drove the ALCAN in 1989 when PCS'ing from Fort Clark, NC to Fort Wainwright, AK. Did it going up with an 88 Jeep 2WD Commanche pickup pulling an aged 12 ft Camper with the wife and kid in the cab. Came out in 1993 driving it in a Chevy 4WD truck with a cap on it, a 19-foot freighter canoe on top, and the dog as the passenger. I'd drive until late then the dog and I just slept in the cab on the side of the road. Interesting trip both ways and some nice country. I would do it again.
Mav you should try making Kimchi for your travels, it’s super easy & helps with your health & digestion flow control as well. There’s a bunch more health benefits but you can store it in your fridge as long as you want because the longer it ferments the better it tastes. I’ve fermented mine for months before using it in broths for udon or ramen. If you need a recipe I can add a comment of mine👍🏻
Your sickness might be due to air quality in your cabin. Considering how much stuff is in your car at all times and the varying weather, it could be some kind of allergen growing in the car. Not saying it is, but it could be. Mold is a possibility as well.

I know I might be too late, but you should really go to Dawson City Yukon. Instead of heading east to cross at Haines Junction, go north from Whitehorse. It’s an old gold mining town that still has dirt streets, raised wooden boardwalks, Wild West shop fronts, saloons, a gambling hall, plus a famous tourist tradition of taking a shot of liquor with a severed toe in it. It’s a great small town, you’d love it and it’d be great content! I was there for 5 weeks this past year. It’s also on the edge of the Tombstone Provincial Park that’s breathtaking
I have to admit, I never traveled much. I did go from Pennsylvania to Georgia to see my son graduate from the army. So I really enjoy traveling with you. So I hope you don’t mind me tagging along. The trip on the Alaska highway is FAR too beautiful to speed through. I planned for 15 days and I wish I had more time. I actually enjoyed going through the Yukon more than all the traveling I did through Alaska. I also went through Glacier National Park which was my favorite part of the whole trip.
Fun fact. I actually build the tire on your truck here in mount Vernon illinois. So from someone who builds tires a personal thank you for appreciating the hard work we put in making those tires!
I don’t have a truck but I’m currently saving and planning a road trip thru Canada from Michigan to Alaska. It’s 56 hours one way. I will do it in my Chevy Malibu. Thanks for this Mav

I fought forest fire up in Watson lake in the summer of 06’ when they had a busy season. That’s some beautiful landscape up there. Never really gets dark at night in the summer. Kind of cool. Glad you got to see us in Canada
Geez, my son and I must have been just a few days ahead of you. Had to wait to cross that bridge three times because we had to go back to gas up. Recognized many things along the way, including the Argentinian guy walking. Thanks for bringing back fun memories!

I drove that same route back in 1999 when I was moving from Alaska to here in TN. They were doing major construction in that same exact area in the YT lol Nice to see them still working on the same road 20+ years later lol
My grandfather helped build the Alaska Highway in the 1950s. It’s an amazing place.

Pa's company (Northrup) transferred him to Anchorage in May 1954..... I was pulled out of 3rd grade a couple weeks early (no biggie), we packed our worldly belongings into a 13' camping trailer and towed it up the Al-Can with our new 1953 Olds 88..... Unlike your trip, there were NO paved roads (well, maybe a couple miles in towns now and then)...... Saw first my snow in Whitehorse (flurries)....Anchorage from '54-'57 had verrrry few paved roads....mostly just downtown (4th-5th-6th Ave, etc)
That was the beginning of my life of adventure..... 1966 aboard my first sub in the Navy, I bought a 1956 Caddy hearse for my navy bunk mattress (borrowed) and 9'6" longboard.....Aug. 1967 transferred to another sub in NH, traded my hearse for a 1939 Chevy paddy wagon (Portsmouth PD)....Discharged in May '68, drove paddy wagon to Ft. Liquordale for commercial diving school....Sept. '68, drove to Torrance, CA.....Burned out all the exhaust valves (set too tight), with help from Pa, rebuilt it....Had no money, so had to sell..... More crazy adventures til Sept. '69 started Santa Barbara Silly College~Marine Diving Tech.....Bought a rusty 1961 IH Metro-Mite from my buddy and drove it 2 round trips Santa Barbara to Morgan City, LA summer of '70 to work offshore and '71 after graduation..... Gave up on diving (worked sporadically as tender, workboat deckhand and aluminum shipfitter in winter..... lousy $)....Finally wised up, settled down at 27 in Santa Barbara.....

Yeppers, y'all are livin' a life of adventure, BUT in the lap of luxury..... When I wuz drivin' across country at 45-50mph in a bread truck, had barely enough $ for gas and an occasional sandwich to get from point A to B (no motels, those were for the wealthy)....That wuz the hippy-dippy days, so my travels weren't abbynormal .... Many times, I had no idea where I was gonna get my next meal, but always scrounged up day jobs..... I had no idea that I was poor....Never occurred to me....(Retired from SBFD in 2004, living the gooood life in SW FL on the Gulfcoast)

I’ve driven that route from Sioux Falls SD to Anchorage once before. It’s a pretty boring drive until you get into BC/northwest territories. From that point on its absolutely beautiful.
Just finished going from Winnipeg Mb, to Paris On and back again in 5 days of driving. 2153 kms /1338 miles there and back again. Came back pulling a new RV trailer. No issues for my 01 GMC Sierra c3 AWD 6.0 LQ4 except for a bad ground and a new trailer plug needed to be installed to get the lights working on the trailer. Had a bit of a close call Tuesday night after dark in the Eastern hills near Thunder Bay on the way back with Bullwinkle the Moose, but he kept on trucking past the passenger side of the truck while I was fumbling with the brights after passing a semi-trailer on undivided highway, and trying to hit the woah pedal as quickly as possible with a trailer behind. Chewed a good quarter pound of bottom lip, and spent the next 30 minutes looking for a turnoff to pull over on and get some rest for the rest of the night.
So cool that your parents are meeting you. Precious Memories!!!

edit: 12:20 they WERE going extinct, but there have been many programs to rebuild populations. Most of the wood bison in the US are descended from the comparatively vast herds in Alberta. Conservation can work!

I visited Colorado a few months ago, stayed in Estes park, went up into and through the Rockies, then went and “raced” up pikes peak to the severe disapproval of my wife..lol.. and I absolutely LOVED every minute of the mountains and the scenery, meeting people from different parts of the country and world. Man I wish I could do the same as you. And maybe one day I will figure out how. I miss it, though just a brief few days I had. I will go back someday. Sounds weird, but it’s a longing in my being to be in the mountains. Cool kids can have the beaches, gimme the mountains and trees. God bless brother, and safe travels.

Done that many times. Usually 2-3 day trip (1 way) depending on how many breaks you take. Driving through the PNW is beautiful in the summer through fall

I drove from Salt Lake to Seward, Alaska 30 years ago with my son who was 4 yr old. I want to do it again. Been back to Alaska but went cruise ship.

I always look forward to you videos. Such great content and your way of doing life is how I and my husband did life on and off for years. We met sooo many interesting ppl and saw such awesome landscape and were able to help when catastrophic events took place, we were there to lend a hand. I don't regret too much, I have to say. A big thing I am realizing in my latter years is that we were so transient, we lost touch and missed out on events with our family and friends. Not all the time but enough. It makes me feel good that you make time to spend quality time with your folks. I like your mom and Dad. It seems that they both have wonderlust as well. Driving is hard work. It will make you soooo tired. When you stop, you still feel the road humming in your body. It really stressees your immune system out so you gotta know how to take care of yourself on the road. I was impressed with your thermometer. Lol. I learned alot on this video about the Rocky Mountains , which are sooooo beautiful. The wildlife was soooo sick and the hot springs, fabulous. wow, such a great episode Mav - really appreciate you sacrificing the sleep time to get some great footage and share your journey with us even though you were time crunched. What an amazing journey. I was blessed recently with a day off to recognize the National Truth and Reconciliation Day here in Canada. I drove up through one of the reserves and stopped at a store that was closed but the owner offered me free product as a kind gesture, then i stopped for a meal and an anonymous person paid for my meal, made me cry.
Made that drive twice from southeastern Idaho for work ,it’s a beast of a road trip, but the sightseeing is some of the best in the world! Have fun on your trip Mav!

Mav you definitely need some LED headlights, the bulbs are cheap on amazon! Helps 100%, maybe even get a whole new housing replace so the lenses are clear.

ALSO that bridge that's blown out will be blown out for a couple weeks at least Mav, I work with the biggest Canadian shipping company and the stall that holds the shipments up north to Watson Lake etc etc has been filling up as we can't send nothing up. I drove the ALCAN from Fairbanks back to my home state of Texas back in 1983. I was a radar operator in the Air Force stationed at a radar site just 27 miles northwest of Fairbanks. It's called Murphy Dome. Glad you made the trip safely! Congratulations!

My parents took me on the AlCan highway when it was not paved. I was 10 years old then. I am 70 now..best trip ever. thanks for showing me what it looks like now.
Drove from North Pole AK to Mars Pa in 6 days. Greatest trip in my life. Don't do it if you are a light weight Driver. The Yukon is no joke. Extra tires and fuel and food.

In 1978 my parents and I drove that same road in a pickup truck with slide in camper. What an adventure! Most of the Highway was gravel and 2 lane with trucks flying at you spraying rocks. Tires and windshields suffered. Great trip!

Liard Hotsprings is honestly my favourite place in Canada. And I've been to nine provinces and all three territories (and 49 states, lived in a van, that's another story).

it's amazing with as big a channel as Mav has the revenue no doubt gives him the ability to drive a brand new truck, especially on such a road trip as this, yet he still drives this older Ford pickup. Long Time Lurker first time commenting. My dad and I drove past this guy twice in one day! We were wondering where he was going. We seen him in central Alberta. He can travel an impressive distance in a couple hours. We were both impressed on our way home how far he had walked in a few hours. I'm going to have to check out his RUclips channel. In Latvia, if you go 50Km/h (30miles) over the limit, they tow your car and you loose your driving license. Then you'll have to go to driving school and start over, to get your license back. They want to make it 30km/h now

I’m an Aussie…drove from San Francisco to Alaska and back in 1998. Went up through Nebraska..Idaho ..Wyoming..Montana..Alberta..BC ..Yukon etc into Alaska at Toc.
Down as far as Homer from Anchorage thence back up to as far as Fairbanks.. ( watched the Northern Lights on a pitch black night up in the hills out from latter..beautiful ! ) Seward on the way back. Thence coastal back down to ‘Frisco when able.
It was an adventure …far to commercialised now. God’s country back then.
Work wise, through aerial hydrographic survey flights visited Sitka, ( magical place..where Michener wrote his book ‘ Alaska ‘ ). Sand Point and Kodiak. Truly, Mother Earth showing her beauty in all its facets. A very humbling experience. I was blessed.

I’ve actually had the general at2 on my 01 4Runner for over 40k and I’ve been really impressed. Road noise is the reason I didn’t get the ko2’s. Had a buddy with the ko2’s on his jeep and they were really loud. I am super happy I went with the generals.

Can’t wait to see where you take us to in Alaska. Would love to go there to watch the northern lights. Curious on the route you’ll take back home. If you are not in a hurry, too tired or on a schedule I would highly recommend going to Banff and Jasper in Canada on the way home to see Lake Louise and the ice fields and other sights. Went there as a teen and thought those mountains were the true meaning of majestic.

Drove the ALCAN in 1989 when PCS'ing from Fort Clark, NC to Fort Wainwright, AK. Did it going up with an 88 Jeep 2WD Commanche pickup pulling an aged 12 ft Camper with the wife and kid in the cab. Came out in 1993 driving it in a Chevy 4WD truck with a cap on it, a 19-foot freighter canoe on top, and the dog as the passenger. I'd drive until late then the dog and I just slept in the cab on the side of the road. Interesting trip both ways and some nice country. I would do it again.
Mav you should try making Kimchi for your travels, it’s super easy & helps with your health & digestion flow control as well. There’s a bunch more health benefits but you can store it in your fridge as long as you want because the longer it ferments the better it tastes. I’ve fermented mine for months before using it in broths for udon or ramen. If you need a recipe I can add a comment of mine👍🏻

Your sickness might be due to air quality in your cabin. Considering how much stuff is in your car at all times and the varying weather, it could be some kind of allergen growing in the car. Not saying it is, but it could be. Mold is a possibility as well.

I know I might be too late, but you should really go to Dawson City Yukon. Instead of heading east to cross at Haines Junction, go north from Whitehorse.
It’s an old gold mining town that still has dirt streets, raised wooden boardwalks, Wild West shop fronts, saloons, a gambling hall, plus a famous tourist tradition of taking a shot of liquor with a severed toe in it.
It’s a great small town, you’d love it and it’d be great content! I was there for 5 weeks this past year. It’s also on the edge of the Tombstone Provincial Park that’s breathtaking
I have to admit, I never traveled much. I did go from Pennsylvania to Georgia to see my son graduate from the army. So I really enjoy traveling with you. So I hope you don’t mind me tagging along.
