As someone with a bit of experience in video production, I doubt most people will appreciate the number of multi-angled shots that you will edit into a 5-10 second clip of the rig traveling a stretch of road. inside, outside, stopping and running ahead to set up cameras, running back to retrieve them and then all the editing involved to to make it appear seamless. I can't imagine from shooting to release, how many hours it must take you to produce a 1/2 hr video. Incredible work sir!

Dustin, there are LOTS of Travelogue channels, lots of RV & Vanlife channels, lots of sailing and boating channels, lots of exploration channels, and lots of history channels. BUT, because you have the overland rig you have, AND you drag the inflatable boat behind you, AND you study the local history of where you are, you have the ONLY channel that combines all of it. And finally, because you are in BC, you have STUNNING natural beauty to showcase. So you are the ONLY channel, which in one episode, can go from stunning mountain views which may even include an alpine lake, and a fly by between the tree tips on a mountain peak. Then also down to the ocean coast, then actually into the ocean for crabbing, fishing, exploring BC Fjords, and then finally get face to face with a glacier. All in the same 20-30 minute episode. Add to that your world class cinematography, editing, and musical selection, you have what I believe is bar none, THE best content on the internet. Thank you so much for deciding to do this. Also, thank you so much for doing all the background work of researching the history. Having the historical context, be that your personal family history with the logging business, or the wider history of the area you are exploring, it makes the stunning visuals that much more meaningful and impactful for the viewer. I made several trips up the Canol trail back years ago on hunting trips. Many grizzly bears up there. I also saw fuel spill ponds on the tundra from discarded barrels from when they built the road. There’s scrap left everywhere up there by the Americans. They should fund a proper clean up of their mess.

On those nights with a high Kp try looking through your digital camera; the silicone sensor is more sensitive in those wavelengths than the human eye and often can pick up the Aurora that the eye can’t.
I cannot believe it. It is the end of the season. But more so my heart breaks that Emmy needs to go home.. I already feel like she’s a part of the family and needs to prepare for next season, well, one can only hope she could just stay forever. Two of my aunts were in Dawson Creek during the war road building, one met and married a US man and lived till she passed this summer in east NJ 40 miles from NYC, they've all passed. I'm glad Emi got to see Aurora Borealis! A really great show.
Just always leaves me saying, WOW! I’ve spent a lifetime exploring and absolutely love all the places you take us to! I live in very rural NW Montana. Walked out at 3am 2 nights ago to let the puppers out to do business and thought hrmmm, pretty sure no moon tonight but it’s light out. In front of us pitch black as I looked up to admire the stars. Turned around to walk back and there were the bright as heck northern lights. I set up a chair and watched for 30 minutes. After 20ish light shows, they never cease to render me speechless!

I lived up in the Whitehorse area for a few years, it’s been 50years since I’ve been up there but it’s NEVER gotten out of the blood as I always dream of going back. Thankyou for even just being in the area as you brought back TONS of great memories

Wow, you drove the CANOL road. That is one of my favourite drives and I used to make a point to travel the Southern portion once a summer, to me the Lapie Canyon and down by the Lapie River bridge are two exceptional points of the drive. I only travelled the entire North Canol once back in 2005 as it is an entirely different undertaking and requires expedition style preparation. My folks actually lived at Ross River before the Campbell highway was built and for them at that time the South Canol was their only road access in and out of the community. It was a different era and way of life for them living at Ross back then.
@@morecowbell20 No, it has since been downgraded from road to trail status and may not even still be passable as bridges and culverts may be gone. Anyone attempting it would need to be fully self sufficient for days including fuel and food and have no prospect of outside help as there are no services and no people along it. I would contact the local road department in Ross River or Yukon 511 for up to date info.
@@morecowbell20 No problem. It is closed and abandoned in the winters. Then after every spring snow melt and water runoff they go up to discover what has been swept away and damaged. In years past they used to try and make it at least passable in the spring but there is basically zero maintenance done on it. I have been out of the loop on its condition for years now however so can’t speak to any maintenance or it’s condition recently.
Trivia for the day! Dustin get you a roll of baling wire to add to your tools, wrap the wire around under the head of the Bolt and around the threaded end and then on the outside of the nut. Bolt will stay... Baling wire is a gift from God😊
One of the most valuable items in the toolbox for sure. This time I had to go the tape route strictly because the bolt was too short. The nylon didn’t even hit the threads. lol. A little close for comfort, but did the trick.
Memories. I don’t think my Dad ever travelled without a roll of baling wire. Heading home to Stewart next month for a visit. Going to check his truck and see if there is still one in there.
I will say it again, western North America from California to the Arctic ocean has to be the most scenic place on earth, thank you for a wonderful trip!
So the old hotel in Ross River is the old Welcome Inn. Was originally owned by a German immigrant Addie Dieckmann. It was quite a nice place and well kept. I worked off and on in Ross River and stayed there many times back in the ‘90s. It was the place to stay with big game hunters when they came though town on their way out to the outfitters camps. You could always meet interesting characters there. There was even a murder there. It was sold and transferred ownership a few times and it’s eventually deteriorated into what you see now. Sad
Tech tip: Trailer shackle parts are usually so basic with a nylon tube insert in the eye of the spring end and a simple bolt and nut. I advise upgrading to what we call a "wet shackle" kit. These are comprised of a steel insert sleeve along with a bolt that is drilled and fitted with a grease nipple so you can regularly lube those shackle bolts. No more squeak and sqwaking and no more nylon insert going away after just a few miles of dry friction towing.
Absolutely beautiful.a little advice from a trailer builder. When you have to do a road side fix like that it will stay better if you can stake the nut after getting it tight
We first did the South and North Canol roads to Camp Mile 222 in 1985. We traveled the North Canol three times to visit a retired Mounty who was working as a wildlife enforcement officer at Camp Mile 222. It's too bad you did not get a chance to do the North Canol and try to see how far your rig could make it past Mac pass. The abandoned tire shop you featured in your video got our business after we got a slow leaker when coming out of the access road to the Macmillen Pass mine. They had a rough section that looked like shot rock, and one got to a rear tire.

One of the best travel videos I have seen. I have seen the Northern Lights a lot of times over my 81 years, from the air and on the ground, but these are the prettiest I have ever seen. Many years ago, I read the history of the Alaska Hwy and the Canol Road, and as a pilot, I flew over that country countless times. There is nothing like seeing the country from the ground, to appreciate the beauty, and get the perspective.
Thanks for doing this. In the early 80’s I owned a word processing company and I was publishing thesis papers for the University of Alberta. I remember publishing a couple of documents on the Canol Road. It captured my attention and it tickled my fantasies. I would like to explore the road on my motorcycle.

My brother finally got a little glimpse of Northern lights, fifty miles north of Chicago! Not the best u that see but close enough for someone who has never been able to travel because he's been taking care of his handicapped daughter for fifty five yrs! These beautiful videos are the only travel he knows!❤❤❤
In PA the aurora was amazing just the other night. I saw that it was said to be visible in 49 US states. And good for your brother, he is doing a great thing.

I worked up the North Canol road in 1989 for about a week. Well worth your returning and doing it. It is beautiful. We didn't get to the end and a lot of it was on fire at the time (we camped in the middle of the fire -- worker safety culture wasn't so big back then). Lots of neat things to explore and a lot more of the old trucks. (BTW for pronunciation, the emphasis is on the first syllable -- CAN-ol. Beautiful video and you are right that fall colours are absolutely spectacular up there.
I've always known that Canada has some incredibly beautiful country side, but just to see some that I'll never be able to see just blows me away, thanks to Emy and Justin, thank you so much.
As a solo traveller in BC from the 80’s and somewhat in the NWT from the 70’s I really appreciate seeing your incredible videos. I haven't done that highway but I travelled through Yukon, BC and Alaska. It was among the most enjoyable and fun exploration of my life. Nearly every video of yours takes me back to that magic time.
I drove the South Canol road 6 years ago, absolutely stunning! Watching your video brought back so many memories. I camped along the Lapie river for a couple of nights, the lake side campsites were mostly occupied by hunters. Regardless the area is a backroad explorers paradise! I plan to travel the North Canol road within a few years. Fantastic video!

Hello! Enjoying your video here, I grew up in the Arctic Dad was a pilot up there long ago. There have been a few unsolved disappearances up there likely some I don't even know of but a guy was filming in the Nahanni country for the NFB had a plane crash early '60's they found his plane the following summer and a diary with entry's 50 days then it stops but Blake Mackenzie was never seen again. He was flying a 1954 Cessna 180 on ski's from Ross River to a camp near Mcleod Lake. Have a great day and thanks for your work!
I’ve ridden South Canol a couple of times including the entire Robert Campbell Hwy on my motorcycle. I tried to do the North Canol rd 2 years ago but the ferry wasn’t running. I have some friends in Ross River, even know a family that lives on the North side of the ferry landing. The foot bridge across the Pelly River is amazing.
A quick and easy way to make a Lock Nut is obviously double up the nuts but I'm sure you know that. Another way is to take a cold chisel, a hammer and beat deformations into ONE side of the nut. You want to make it so one side of the nut will thread on a few threads and the other side of the nut is oval shaped creating a self locking nut. Or instead of electrical tape after putting the nut and bolt in place take a hammer and beat the threaded end of the bolt so it is so deformed the nut will never un thread "Mushroom Head". Both ways destroy the threads on the nut and bolt and you will either Zip disc them off or just sheer them with a long snipe back at home base. Either way cheap bush fix to keep ya on the trail. I remember when Iohan Gueorguiev bikepacked this road, he was running into grizzlies the whole time! Bravest man who ever lived I swear, who else goes bikepacking in the arctic winter alone, while meanwhile we're scared to even drive up there without 4 or 5 aftermarket heaters in our trucks!

As a Norwegian I’ve seen quite a few of these kinds of roads and I can tell you that that road seems to be well kept. From what I saw there were few holes, and what holes there were where shallow and hardly more than a year old, tops. That means that gravel is filled on the road and the road scraped with regular intervals.
Dustin, I have a few friends that tried to do the North Canol road on their side by sides and quads, a few years ago.They said the north portion of the road ended at an abandoned Molybdenum mine. They even had made a pontoon bridge that was pulled like a trailer when not being used to cross the rivers. They made it about 1/2 way until they got to a river that was too large to cross! We really enjoy the show, keep on, keeping on, eh!
I have driven the Canol between Johnsons Crossing and Ross River a number of times. I have been on the airstrip at Macmillan pass . In the late 60s' you could only drive as far as Ross River.

I made several trips up the Canol trail back years ago on hunting trips. Many grizzly bears up there. I also saw fuel spill ponds on the tundra from discarded barrels from when they built the road. There’s scrap left everywhere up there by the Americans. They should fund a proper clean up of their mess.
So much beauty. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through your journey.

On those nights with a high Kp try looking through your digital camera; the silicone sensor is more sensitive in those wavelengths than the human eye and often can pick up the Aurora that the eye can’t.
I cannot believe it. It is the end of the season. But more so my heart breaks that Emmy needs to go home.. I already feel like she’s a part of the family and needs to prepare for next season, well, one can only hope she could just stay forever. Just always leaves me saying, WOW! I’ve spent a lifetime exploring and absolutely love all the places you take us to! I live in very rural NW Montana. Walked out at 3am 2 nights ago to let the puppers out to do business and thought hrmmm, pretty sure no moon tonight but it’s light out. In front of us pitch black as I looked up to admire the stars. Turned around to walk back and there were the bright as heck northern lights. I set up a chair and watched for 30 minutes. After 20ish light shows, they never cease to render me speechless!

Wow, you drove the CANOL road. That is one of my favourite drives and I used to make a point to travel the Southern portion once a summer, to me the Lapie Canyon and down by the Lapie River bridge are two exceptional points of the drive. I only travelled the entire North Canol once back in 2005 as it is an entirely different undertaking and requires expedition style preparation. My folks actually lived at Ross River before the Campbell highway was built and for them at that time the South Canol was their only road access in and out of the community. It was a different era and way of life for them living at Ross back then.
I bet life was pretty special living there before the Highway went in.
@squangan, this video has me intrigued to try a motocamping trip up the North Canol. Any idea if the trip is any easier now than back in 2005?
@@morecowbell20 No, it has since been downgraded from road to trail status and may not even still be passable as bridges and culverts may be gone. Anyone attempting it would need to be fully self sufficient for days including fuel and food and have no prospect of outside help as there are no services and no people along it. I would contact the local road department in Ross River or Yukon 511 for up to date info.

@@morecowbell20 No problem. It is closed and abandoned in the winters. Then after every spring snow melt and water runoff they go up to discover what has been swept away and damaged. In years past they used to try and make it at least passable in the spring but there is basically zero maintenance done on it. I have been out of the loop on its condition for years now however so can’t speak to any maintenance or it’s condition recently.

Dustin get you a roll of baling wire to add to your tools, wrap the wire around under the head of the Bolt and around the threaded end and then on the outside of the nut.

One of the most valuable items in the toolbox for sure. This time I had to go the tape route strictly because the bolt was too short. The nylon didn’t even hit the threads. lol. A little close for comfort, but did the trick.
Memories. I don’t think my Dad ever travelled without a roll of baling wire. Heading home to Stewart next month for a visit. Going to check his truck and see if there is still one in there.
If you ever get down around the 45° here on the Pacific, we call it hay wire. The old farmers had a lot of stuff that was "haywired". 😄

Was originally owned by a German immigrant Addie Dieckmann.
It was quite a nice place and well kept. I worked off and on in Ross River and stayed there many times back in the ‘90s. It was the place to stay with big game hunters when they came though town on their way out to the outfitters camps. You could always meet interesting characters there. There was even a murder there. It was sold and transferred ownership a few times and it’s eventually deteriorated into what you see now. Sad

Tech tip: Trailer shackle parts are usually so basic with a nylon tube insert in the eye of the spring end and a simple bolt and nut. I advise upgrading to what we call a "wet shackle" kit. These are comprised of a steel insert sleeve along with a bolt that is drilled and fitted with a grease nipple so you can regularly lube those shackle bolts. No more squeak and sqwaking and no more nylon insert going away after just a few miles of dry friction towing.

Absolutely beautiful.a little advice from a trailer builder. When you have to do a road side fix like that it will stay better if you can stake the nut after getting it tight
We first did the South and North Canol roads to Camp Mile 222 in 1985. We traveled the North Canol three times to visit a retired Mounty who was working as a wildlife enforcement officer at Camp Mile 222. It's too bad you did not get a chance to do the North Canol and try to see how far your rig could make it past Mac pass. The abandoned tire shop you featured in your video got our business after we got a slow leaker when coming out of the access road to the Macmillen Pass mine. They had a rough section that looked like shot rock, and one got to a rear tire.

One of the best travel videos I have seen. I have seen the Northern Lights a lot of times over my 81 years, from the air and on the ground, but these are the prettiest I have ever seen. Many years ago, I read the history of the Alaska Hwy and the Canol Road, and as a pilot, I flew over that country countless times. There is nothing like seeing the country from the ground, to appreciate the beauty, and get the perspective.

Thanks for doing this. In the early 80’s I owned a word processing company and I was publishing thesis papers for the University of Alberta. I remember publishing a couple of documents on the Canol Road. It captured my attention and it tickled my fantasies. I would like to explore the road on my motorcycle.

My brother finally got a little glimpse of Northern lights, fifty miles north of Chicago! Not the best u that see but close enough for someone who has never been able to travel because he's been taking care of his handicapped daughter for fifty five yrs! These beautiful videos are the only travel he knows!❤❤❤
In PA the aurora was amazing just the other night. I saw that it was said to be visible in 49 US states. And good for your brother, he is doing a great thing.

I worked up the North Canol road in 1989 for about a week. Well worth your returning and doing it. It is beautiful. We didn't get to the end and a lot of it was on fire at the time (we camped in the middle of the fire -- worker safety culture wasn't so big back then). Lots of neat things to explore and a lot more of the old trucks. (BTW for pronunciation, the emphasis is on the first syllable -- CAN-ol. Beautiful video and you are right that fall colours are absolutely spectacular up there.
I've always known that Canada has some incredibly beautiful country side, but just to see some that I'll never be able to see just blows me away, thanks to Emy and Justin, thank you so much.

I drove the South Canol road 6 years ago, absolutely stunning! Watching your video brought back so many memories. I camped along the Lapie river for a couple of nights, the lake side campsites were mostly occupied by hunters. Regardless the area is a backroad explorers paradise! I plan to travel the North Canol road within a few years. Fantastic video!
Dustin, what makes you so special is your wonderful cinamatography which is done in such a way as to evoke emotion in people. I feel the beauty you see and share with us in my heart and the fact that Emmi is your companion on this seasons journey is wonderful for you and for us. Hello! Enjoying your video here, I grew up in the Arctic Dad was a pilot up there long ago. There have been a few unsolved disappearances up there likely some I don't even know of but a guy was filming in the Nahanni country for the NFB had a plane crash early '60's they found his plane the following summer and a diary with entry's 50 days then it stops but Blake Mackenzie was never seen again. He was flying a 1954 Cessna 180 on ski's from Ross River to a camp near Mcleod Lake. Have a great day and thanks for your work!
I’ve ridden South Canol a couple of times including the entire Robert Campbell Hwy on my motorcycle. I tried to do the North Canol rd 2 years ago but the ferry wasn’t running. I have some friends in Ross River, even know a family that lives on the North side of the ferry landing. The foot bridge across the Pelly River is amazing.
A quick and easy way to make a Lock Nut is obviously double up the nuts but I'm sure you know that. Another way is to take a cold chisel, a hammer and beat deformations into ONE side of the nut. You want to make it so one side of the nut will thread on a few threads and the other side of the nut is oval shaped creating a self locking nut. Or instead of electrical tape after putting the nut and bolt in place take a hammer and beat the threaded end of the bolt so it is so deformed the nut will never un thread "Mushroom Head". Both ways destroy the threads on the nut and bolt and you will either Zip disc them off or just sheer them with a long snipe back at home base. Either way cheap bush fix to keep ya on the trail. Incredible video. Thank You

I remember when Iohan Gueorguiev bikepacked this road, he was running into grizzlies the whole time! Bravest man who ever lived I swear, who else goes bikepacking in the arctic winter alone, while meanwhile we're scared to even drive up there without 4 or 5 aftermarket heaters in our trucks!

As a Norwegian I’ve seen quite a few of these kinds of roads and I can tell you that that road seems to be well kept. From what I saw there were few holes, and what holes there were where shallow and hardly more than a year old, tops. That means that gravel is filled on the road and the road scraped with regular intervals.
Dustin, I have a few friends that tried to do the North Canol road on their side by sides and quads, a few years ago.They said the north portion of the road ended at an abandoned Molybdenum mine. They even had made a pontoon bridge that was pulled like a trailer when not being used to cross the rivers. They made it about 1/2 way until they got to a river that was too large to cross! We really enjoy the show, keep on, keeping on, eh!
I have driven the Canol between Johnsons Crossing and Ross River a number of times. I have been on the airstrip at Macmillan pass . In the late 60s' you could only drive as far as Ross River.
