I was a hmmwv mechanic for 12 years in the army. That thing looks in pretty good shape. If you always disconnect the main ground first and leave it last to hook back up you shouldn’t get shocked again. The only cause if a power drain on that thing would be forgetting to turn the master light switch completely off. The death wobble your getting at about 60-65 is the huge bead locks they run on them. They are hard to balance, but doable. A good balance and alignment should fix it.
Hey @Mav, I’m not a mechanic, nor have I ever even been in a HumV. But this sounds like solid advice. Id say definitely go with old @jaimeseagraves advice.
Hey Mav, worked on a number of the M1123s and a few with the shelters in the motor pool. The fact that you were able to force the truck to 65mph is a miracle it didnt explode or make an astronaut out of a piston. It shakes likely because its shaped like a brick with massive airflow underneath. The alignment I'm certain could be improved and a better steering gear would help, pretty sure there have to be aftermarket steering boxes for these by now. That space above the cab usually hosts an A/C unit for the shelter, although the military usage requires on site electrical support to run said Shelter's Electronics and A/C unit. If you want to power an A/C window unit via solar or put in a wide window and use it for storage. I know the hood says "NO STEP" but its pretty stable to stand on if need be also. That blockage you found in your filler neck is/was apart of the galvanized chain {like a tag on the chain, still don't know what it's for but see them still on the trucks regularly} that would chain your filler neck screen (mesh bucket bit) to your filler neck and another chain going from the filler neck to the lid to the filler neck. As mentioned below, the idea is you screw the handle of your fuel cap and the rubber gasket gets squishes causing it to seal the tank from water seepage during water fording. It would be worth mentioning the cabs usually have pretty trash sound barrier, the 6.5 in those is the same as the 6.5 in 90s Chevy 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. get some insulation in the doghouse cover, the firewalls/footwells, plastic splashguards in the engine bay and under the fiberglass hood.
Guess the USMC ones got better motors ;) But i know the feeling when they sound like a wounded dragon above 40ish mph. Especially when they're exposed to fine sand every day for months... Still a pretty solid machine to get around in theatre. You lot kindly "donated" a couple back when we took over the field hospital i worked at ;)
@@kalebnolen1616 No clue what those "donations" had back then. They got the job done... Even after mayor punishment (either kinetic or "bad driving" ;))
Is there something you could do underneath to restrict the airflow and make it more stable and a better ride it seems like since you said that having massive air flow going under it causing that that it could be remedied is that so if so is it easy I mean
Never watched you before but as a US military member, I love the video. The Humvee is not the most comfortable vehicle or the most reliable, but I still have a soft spot for them. You should definitely keep us updated with a build series or something!

Hey Mav, I noticed in one of the shots that you had the panel light switch left on. That will drain the battery pretty quickly if left that way. I’ve used vehicles like this for almost 18 years now. I highly recommend checking that light switch to make sure you didn’t accidentally turn it on before you get out. It’ll save you a lot of money in batteries.

blowing my drink all over me before the adventure even began would have already pissed me right off lol. You're so down to earth and calm about everything lol. A true gift.
I spent allot of time working, driving and living in one of those machines. You defiantly have a USMC model due to the exhaust and air intake snorkels. The fuel cap is made that way so you can really tighten it down so no water gets in the fuel tank when submerging the Humvee. It would be a good idea to put a brush guard/winch on it and then drive where you want. Enjoy the vehicle and thanks for sharing the video.
Yeah the back of the wood board 11:39 saying GYSGT Perez (Gunnery Sergeant, aka a Marine rank) & 1854 duncan street (Camp Lejeune, aka a Marine base) gave it away for me. But yeah... Intakes and exhausts...

They just won't typically take a charge directly from the battery charger. Enjoy watching your videos.
Mav, love the Humvee. Im with everyone else...a build series, please. If all your switches are off and you still have an electrical drain, put a battery on/off switch on your batteries. That Humvee is pretty cool. The loud engine noise and tires and wind when going down the road is to be expected but it looks fun just driving straight thru all those woods and stuff.
Hey Mav. For wasps, bees, hornets, etc. get a 3-5 gallon bucket, pour some Dawn liquid detergent in it and through it on the nest preferably late in the evening or early in the morning before sunrise when they are all on the nest. This way you don’t have to mess with poison. Use the solution in a hand spray bottle to kill the mosquitoes inside your vehicle.
Thanks, Mav. That noise would drive me and my hearing aides mad. The fact that you can see the inside as a blank canvas is impressive. Eager to see what you’ll do next. PS since you have the Jackery bring yourself a little fan. Stay safe… have fun!
Until youre able to figure out the draw on the batteries, the easiest thing to do is disconnect the negative cable when the truck is going to sit for a while. Also vehicle electrical systems are a lot safer to work with compared to home AC systems(in my opinion). Just simply connecting and disconnecting the battery cables, although not enjoyable, it wont do any serious damage if you get shocked real quick.
I was taught to remove the negative battery cable first thing so the vehicle no longer has a grounded chassis. It won't spark off the wrench during negative removal, nor after, not unless you join the contacts right on the battery.
Ye that’s best but also if you aimlessly throw the terminal around and it’s hits metal or other grounds it will make sparks regardless therefore just hold it with one hand until you’re done

I drove a Humvee for a few years when I was in the Army. Anytime we had to drive them on the roads I kinda hated it, but whenever we were in the field I loved them. The capabilities they have are amazing, but are prone to having problems all the time. Truly a love-hate relationship lol
@@travelinman482 that’s the technical way of spelling it, but literally no one spells it like that who’s in lol. Whenever we text each other to fix/drive a humvee we spell it “humvee” instead.

You should build a couch that you could use to sit on while you're cooking/hanging out inside the humvee that could be converted into a full size bed. Like to convert from couch mode to bed mode, you slide out the base and move down the back cushion to fill in the space between the base cushion and the wall, put some covers on it, and boom, bed mode. As for ventilation, get 1 (or 2 for cross-ventilation) maxxair fans and mount it on the roof. You can use them to suck the air out when you're cooking and also blow air in to keep you cooler. Plus, they come with a cover so rain can't come in the vehicle.
Mav i know camping is your thing but i think i speak for most when i say that it’s you that we love the most. I wish we got more vlog style videos from you. You’re a true gem
I was working up in Minnesota last year and I made gumbo for my crew, with me being from south west Louisiana . Took me about 3-4 hours to make. Made my roux from scratch, oil and flour to the desired color then added the veggies and meat. They loved it.
Mav, I would make it a minimalist build, but give it a solar kit, and propane kit so you can run either/or for cooking. I would also think about trailering the Humvee after building it out and using it as a excursion vehicle that can be driven from a base camp, that has the trailer and a few more amenities like water tanks and maybe more cold storage for perishable food. Lot of us are the same as you, we get cabin fever from the Midwest winters and that humvee could be packed up with supplies and you could live out of it for a month in the SW in the winter months.
I’ve spent a lot of time living out of one of these in the field, always wondered what it would be like to have one as a civilian camper. Have fun with that thing man, hope it’s better than the ones we had.
Mav, have you though about adding 6 solar panels on the roof and about 4 to 5 batteries to store energy? That thing could be autosustainable! And also very interesting to camp with :)
The fuel cap is designed to keep water out of the tank while crossing rivers and streams. Could just unhook the battery until you figure out what's draining them.
Hey Mav, That big shelf looks like the perfect spot for a spring assist cabinet bed that could fold right into that cubby and give him tons of floor space. There is so much you could do with the humvee
As uncomfortable as the truck looks to live in there is something tremendously comfortable about the beat up military surplus vibe. As any service member will tell you, you find places to “build your nest” where ever available when ever available. That nostalgia is what makes this so cool and comfortable. Being so exhausted you will literally sleep any where but you make the space yours out of your gear. Pelican cases for tables, power supplies for your laptop or tablet, stash of snack near by and if your lucky a woobie hung up with 550 cord to give you a little privacy. I dig the mill surp, vibe smattered with camp gear and would double down on that. But honestly who cares what any one thinks, make it yours like you do bro and it will be awesome.
Nice Ride Mav. I'm a Japanese American who lived in Japan for 10 years so Steve is a sentimental favorite for me but this one has a fun factor when you drive which is nice...
@@baamonster2 The ones that have overdrive transmissions will go 65. Most of them shake like they are about to fall apart because the tires get flat spots from sitting in the motorpool for months/years.
as a veteran MP who has investigated dozens of accidents of humvees with catastrophic mechanical failures at highway speeds, often fatalities, i second this recomendation.
I think for when you’re camping in your vehicles, or to even have when you’re driving that thing I’m sure it gets roasting in there with no AC you should look into a portable camping AC like EcoFlow or ZeroBreeze they have portable ACs and even extra battery packs you can keep charged and options for solar charging as well which I think is pretty cool. Might be worth checking into? I think with the space you have in the back of that you could probably do a really nice setup with it.
14:58 The fuel cap is the way it is because military Humvees can be outfitted to drive through five feet of water. You don't want water getting into your fuel tank, do you? USMC automotive mechanic here.
Mav, I recommend getting some EXIDE (6TAGM) or HAWKER (6TAGM) batteries for that vehicle. They work good on that frame. Also be careful on how long you hold the ignition switch, you want to release as soon as you hear the engine rumble to life. The fly wheel and the Bendix drive teeth on those are notorious for going out. 🤘
The humvee is my favorite, I am so glad you ordered doors for it, it looks so much better and safer! You have a lot of space back there to make it real nice and comfy. I can't wait to see the transformation. Thanks for the excellent videos! I love the cooking too!
I tried not to laugh at the "Dad taking the tools" part. Well OK, not really! 😂 And the look of shock when the well-shaken beverages spewed! This is gonna be a fun series!
When my kids were little my deceased husband had a 47 willys Jeep that he totally rebuilt from top to bottom and it ran like a champ and he taught the kids how to sort of drive while sitting on his lap. They took it back in the wilderness, through the cold dumps, you name it that thing was a bear. It was a real military willys Jeep from world war II. So I can understand how you could really love this thing it's a beast too. Sadly that Willy's Jeep ended up in a very severe car accident and he got rid of it. I'm going to try that gumbo. Looks great 😀👍
I'm just here to say that I enjoy living vicariously through you, young man. Wish i would have/could have done a lot of the things you do in my younger years! Thanks for posting another fun video. P.s. you know you're doin just fine when your Dad is borrowing your tools for a change lol
Hey Mav! I’m pretty sure you have an exhaust leak where the headers meet the crossover pipe which is creating a lot of noise. I work on these all the time and I have had the same issue before.
First of all, congrats on 2 mil! And a recommendation I have is putting a ram bar on the front of the Humvee, one that possibly raps around the front end. That would look so gnarly!
If you haven’t built it out yet, put in a pull out storage unit on the floor. Then build a platform over the wheel wells for a mattress and shelves up the walls for storage.
Mav, the Thermacell biting insect repellant is not to be used around food or indoors \ closed spaces. It is poisonous. I checked the last recent posts to see if anyone else mentioned this. Please be careful, we want you to stay safe :)
A hammock and a military one would work great and it’s supper lightweight and doesn’t take up a lot of space . We brought em with us to the field as we were an SP Artillery unit .
Mav, long time channel watcher! Love your content. I would very much enjoy seeing a full build video on the Humvee. I really think that making it into a mobile base camp on wheels would be legit! I know you'll come up with some killer ideas, and as always man, you know the drill, KEEP ON TRUCKING!!!
That is a common problem on those diesel switch start they trickle drain the battery. May need to store the battery in your home for longer life. Also it is diesel so when moisture gets to the battery cables it prevents the glow battery cable from heating due to rust corrosion. In all it is an awesome diesel truck will always need work TLC. Lets go camping deisel Hum Vee!!! :) Nice filming. :)
My wife and I have been discussing picking one up for several years now... she has been trolling RUclips for build ideas, love to see a full build out on yours.
Get your tires balanced, have the alternator checked, put in some hooks cattycorner for a hammock when its warm out and yes flip the door hinges it will make it a little quieter . Another thing for the batteries is a small solar panel and converter. These are purely suggestions, hope it helps.
I would love to see a build. I would think that some sound deadening on the floor, firewall, walls, doors, etc. would make a much quieter drive. You might also see about the alignment to see if you can clean up some of that "death wobble" at high speeds, but I don't think they're made to do 70mph. Really excited to see what you do with this thing.
I am so inspired by you Mav! You said you were so happy to be home in your last video so I expected a little break and yet, here you are making a video FOR US camping in a humve nonetheless!! I drove a Humvee for a few years when I was in the Army. Anytime we had to drive them on the roads I kinda hated it, but whenever we were in the field I loved them. The capabilities they have are amazing, but are prone to having problems all the time. Truly a love-hate relationship lol
HMMWV
@@travelinman482 that’s the technical way of spelling it, but literally no one spells it like that who’s in lol. Whenever we text each other to fix/drive a humvee we spell it “humvee” instead.
They got problems cause y’all never properly pmcs them for us to order and fix shit 😂😂
@@andrewlanza9033 lmao bs, I had to pmcs those mf’s damn near every other day. It was the mechanics that never wanted to do their job. They always love to blame the operators and stop there
You should build a couch that you could use to sit on while you're cooking/hanging out inside the humvee that could be converted into a full size bed.
That "weird shake" is normal lol. These things were never really designed to go over 55mph.
No wonder the radio mount fell out at 80 mph in a up armored 2 seater downhill lol
Yeah they can blow up at 70mph
lmaoo dis man is soo consistent w the videos n soo funny I love his camping videos
Mav i know camping is your thing but i think i speak for most when i say that it’s you that we love the most. I wish we got more vlog style videos from you. You’re a true gem
i second this big time we love you mav
I was working up in Minnesota last year and I made gumbo for my crew, with me being from south west Louisiana . Took me about 3-4 hours to make. Made my roux from scratch, oil and flour to the desired color then added the veggies and meat. They loved it.
This vehicle can go places no others can. More camping with the Humvee Mav, it’s awesome
Mav,
I would make it a minimalist build, but give it a solar kit, and propane kit so you can run either/or for cooking.
And also very interesting to camp with :)
why 6 specifically?
Good idea tho
I think 6 solar panels is the most he will be able to install on the roof by the size of it, just guessing:) might be more might be less
You should add a bunk bed that doubles as a overhead shelf so you can camp with Murray!!!
If not they will have to share the queen size bed lol
I second this. 👏🏻
This video has made it perfectly clear that I need to get my van ready for camping.
You and Steve have inspired me!
Name it the , “Vee-Hive”.
You need a rooftop A/C, a winch, water tank & some KC lights.
good idea man i completely had a brain fart or would have added that in my long essay comment lmao
Channels like this are the reason I don’t understand people paying for cable these days lol. Endless amazing content.
Cable always comes in handy when you gotta watch live sports my man.
@@chillofy2311 besides that it's useless in my opinion.
Nice Ride Mav. I'm a Japanese American who lived in Japan for 10 years so Steve is a sentimental favorite for me but this one has a fun factor when you drive which is nice...
As a veteran who’s worked on, driven, fixed with the humvee is that it’s recommended to not go past 55+ mph.
I went ~65 mph down hill on an FLA back in the days and I thought the vehicle was about to fall apart.🤣
Почему такое ограничение по скорости, из-за возможного перегрева?
@@Periskop55 combination of bad aero and a few mechanical limitations. Just upsets it a lot more than you’d expect.
The weird shake is likely due to you having the aerodynamics of a freaking house
Dang, I was hoping to win
14:58 The fuel cap is the way it is because military Humvees can be outfitted to drive through five feet of water. You don't want water getting into your fuel tank, do you? USMC automotive mechanic here.
What about the hunk of sheet lead he pulled out of it?
@@TheGingaWeirdo to catch trash like he pulled out
@@TheGingaWeirdo Yeah, that's not mil-spec. I can't explain that one.
@@jxg5448 mil spec just means cheapest shit hahaha ask me how I know
Mav, I recommend getting some EXIDE (6TAGM) or HAWKER (6TAGM) batteries for that vehicle. They work good on that frame. Also be careful on how long you hold the ignition switch, you want to release as soon as you hear the engine rumble to life. The fly wheel and the Bendix drive teeth on those are notorious for going out. 🤘
New to the channel but realizing you truly embody how to learn from your mistakes. Big ups buddy.
Laughed so hard at Mav mocking the screeching baby.😁
Mav videos are , equivalent to the seven wonders of the world, Keep on Trucking Mav!
This episode had a hint of camping with Steve for some reason 😂.
It would be a good video to hook up with Steve with this truck and Steve with his bus.
The contrast of going from a nice Mercedes to camping in a janky Humvee is kinda hilarious 😂
I was stationed with a communications Battalion in Pendleton. The Humvee brings back nostalgia memories.
9th comm ?
@@thomasbell2890 lol ... yeahh ! Good ol Mainside !
If you haven’t built it out yet, put in a pull out storage unit on the floor. Then build a platform over the wheel wells for a mattress and shelves up the walls for storage.
This shit right here is 100000× better than anything on Netflix!!!
Keep the content up plz Mav, ur a legend
Yeah, I'm tired of scripted tv, this stuff is far better and you can support who ya want
Mav, the Thermacell biting insect repellant is not to be used around food or indoors \ closed spaces. It is poisonous. I checked the last recent posts to see if anyone else mentioned this. Please be careful, we want you to stay safe :)
Louisiana swamp life mosquitos just laughed at me & partied even harder when I tried a thermacell on an outdoor balcony!
Just saying! Lol
YESSS, exactly what I needed to start my morning. Thank you Mav! Keep on truckin
Bro it’s 6:13 PM where I live
7:15 where I am lol
11:15 pm here great way to go to bed 😂
Its 11:16 pm for me UK 😂
It's 420 here
A hammock and a military one would work great and it’s supper lightweight and doesn’t take up a lot of space .
I am insanely jealous of this purchase. Insanely jealous
Terrific video 😁 thank you for having a variety of vehicles for your journeys and for us to enjoy!
A humvee for outdoor camping is like bringing an assault gun to a knife fight.
I like it 😆
That is a common problem on those diesel switch start they trickle drain the battery. :)
When Parking They always said make sure the switches look like the peace sign or the battery power will drain
or a master cutoff switch. seen a lot of commercial diesel 90s and early 00s with master shutoff to the battery so it doesnt drain
Mav, you make all the filming look effortless and I forget how much work you put into these adventures. Thx for all of it.

My wife and I have been discussing picking one up for several years now... she has been trolling RUclips for build ideas, love to see a full build out on yours.
Very awesome. Super envious. Been looking at similar Humvees for my son and I to do our own build! Love your videos
Ear plugs and a bug zapper and you are golden!
"Deathtrap maybe but it is cool looking" everyone felt that
Mav, that HumVee is badass!! Great content; thanks for sharing!
Hopped in a new Benz to get batteries for a old humvee... I love it😂☺💪
Love your channel, Mav! You are the REAL deal ~. keep on Truckin
So happy to see the ride, that is fire...no cap you definitely have me wanting to follow in your footsteps I think you're an amazing role model man.
I want your life. You are an amazingly impressive, self-sufficient, friendly, and inspirational young man.
I clicked on this because I saw gumbo 😂
This camp goes hard, skeeters and ventilation looked a little brutal, awesome to see the longer video too! Cheers brother
Build it up. Would be a cool little off grid set up. Insulation, ventilation, maybe a small solar set up
Do you think you’re gonna do more with Steve soon? The humvee is amazing but Steve is my favorite!
I am so inspired by you Mav! You said you were so happy to be home in your last video so I expected a little break and yet, here you are making a video FOR US camping in a humve nonetheless!! Your parents definitely raised you right! You seem like such a caring, passionate, and all around decent human being and nowadays that’s hard to come by! Thanks so much for sharing!!
I love the offroad videos like this and your Moab trips. Keep it up and I’m excited to see where this build goes
I think your dad will be like “son, you’ve got a Mercedes you can go buy yourself a new circular saw” lol
