You're definitely going to want to keep a small stock pile of anti-gelling diesel additive on Steve at all times. Just find a corner of a cabinet and have a couple bottles there. Worst thing that could happen is you take them out in the summer and forget to put them back in the winter. Also, adding some kind of pass through to run your engine block heater cord into the interior so you can plug it into your Jackery inside the warm living space would be a beneficial upgrade.
@@dubious6718 I'm a bit surprised because in Canada we have specific Summer and Winter diesel. We don't have a choice, it's what at the pumps. I would have thought the Northern states would be the same.
We specifically have summer and winter diesel here in the states. I live in Kansas and it's 14f right now. Summer diesel, or #2 is rated down to 10f and winter diesel or #1 is good to -30 f. It's best to start putting additive in at anything under 10f though.

Just a bit of help with starting Steve in the cold. If you turn the key half on and hold it for 5 sec a couple of tines it should pre heat the glow plugs and make it easier to start when cold. I own a 26 year old vw t4 and it has hated the cold for the last 15 years but still get me to work. Love the adventures mav. Watching you from the uk
Also keep an extra jump pack or battery and battery’s also are wayyy better if u can keep them warm should start a lot better with a decently warm battery
@Mav I think the problem with Steve not starting other than it being crazy COLD is to turn the key to accessory for about 10 seconds before actually turning it all the way to start it. Diesel's use glow plugs which require heating up. Hope this helps Mav!
Good point! Once my late father, an MD, was held up at gun-point on a grocery store parking lot. The guy, who Dad said was a junky, wanted him to jump in his car and drive them both away. Back then Dad had a diesel International Scout and it was winter, so he jumped in and quickly tried to start it, by cranking the engine without warming the glow plugs. It would not start and the guy just took his cash and wine bottles from the groceries and ran off cursing. Not sure I would've had the composure to pull that off.
@@michaelkissane6138 Wow that gave me goosebumps. I'm so glad he ended up getting out of there okay! I don't think i would be able to pull that off either.
Glad to see Steve get out there! Few things with cold weather and diesels. Isolate your batteries. Battery for the truck and batteries for the RV. Have relays in place to allow RV batteries to be used to assist starting if needed. update the electrical so you can utilize the generator for the block heaters/battery warmers.
Yeah he defs needs a dual battery setup so that the starting battery is kept for only that purpose. He also needs a battery charger connected to the generator, and rigged to charge both batteries. A good idea is to also diver some of the hot air from the diesel heater into the battery cabinet, to keep the battery warm. Internal resistance from the cold is the killer.
As for starting the diesel easier in the cold. Make sure to glow the glow plugs. Ignition on until glow light turns off. As for running out of battery during the night. I noticed you have two batterys. I recommend installing a (not really sure what is is called in English so I just directtranslated it from what we call it in Sweden) divider relay. It will divide the two batterys from each other during load. So that you can have your diesel heater running from just one of the batterys. And not draining power from the start battery. And then when you start the car the relay links the batterys again making the alternator from the engine charge both batterys.
This guy gets it. Get a battery disconnect switch. That way when you are using the house battery and fall asleep it doesn't kill your starting battery.

If you let the glow plugs warm up you might have had enough juice in the battery to start it. Turn the key halfway until the glow plug light goes off. You can burn out your glow plugs by just cold cranking it like that.
yah, onn an older diesel, you would turn the ignition to start the glowplugs up...when glowplug light turns off, you'd turn ignition off and turn ignition back, until the glowplug ligght goes out again...
I’m calling it right now! We need a Steve upgrade video where you fix some of the issues and try to get him sorted for winter camping! Would absolutely love a series of fixing up Steve!!!
Maybe you can attach a swing out bumper mount and put 2 Gerry cans of fuel on it. Add solar to the roof? Battery monitors? Hope this helps. That rig looks like fun!
Mav, seems like there are a lot of comments about this already but Diesel engines have a hard time starting in the cold. I would recommend buying a block heater for Steve! Keeps the engine and its fluids warm to help it start easier.
@@bloopereel33 well, there's a audible difference between scrunch and squeak. when I was working in a factory 14 years ago I'd go out for a smoke break with no jacket and it was fine if there was no wind, that was -43c (-45f) I think at the coldest, my sweat would plume in clouds. So it's not really a measurement of temperature to be in a short sleeve, It's also relevant how dry the air is too. The snow definitely squeaked.
Steve is super cool, it's nice to have enough room to stand up and be inside to cook, not that I didn't enjoy all the camping videos in the truck. May I say the dinner looked very tasty. Being from Michigan and transplanted to Florida, I hate the cold. I think, if it was me, I'd have some insulated drapes and some reflective insulation for the windows and a thicker insulated drape for the cab opening & across the doors. Also a throw rug for at least the area in front of the couch. It always takes a test run to know where to make improvements. Thanks for taking us along!
Looks like bigger alternator and check the glow plugs. Diesel”s are sensitive in cold weather. Also the oil you may be using might be to thick for that temp. Causing hard start ups.
Truth. Br Wils good glow plugs or grid heater. Check to see if you can run a thinner diesel oil in the cold. I also use a good fuel additive when it's that cold. Howes, or Ams oil. Keep that fuel from gelling Keep on truckin
@@jimjanik720 by the sounds of it he ran both batteries down to much in the night cause the slow turn over you could hear when he tried to start it. When his buddy gave him the boost is sprang to life. He needs to get a battery isolator to insure that his starting battery doesnt get depleted with the engine is not running.
So some pro tips for the nice new knives: keep the edge as long as you can by not scraping the sharp side of the blade along the board when you’re picking stuff up and make sure you fully dry them after cleaning (a lot of high end knives aren’t as rust resistant because they have higher hardness, it’s a trade off) And as much as that little sharpening gadget you have is easily portable and works ok, definitely invest in a whetstone 2 sided 1000/4000 would be my recommendation It takes a little learning but the grind on your knives specifically will be easy and there’s a ton of tutorials out there ;) Enjoy!
Thats one of the big tips I got when I was in college. Don't use the sharp side of the knife to scrape up your food. Use the top side. I am so happy someone else noticed this. :)
The fact that when someone recognizes Mav he is always nice, says hey, and even ask their name says alot about what kind of guy he is. Love it man great to see!
It really is proper etiquette, and Mav has it down. He wont remember all these names, but it sends a friendly question back to them, shows interest, avoids an awkward silence and comes across as pleasant and like an old bud. I can tell he has practice with it being seen at stops. Good job Mavrik.
Good morning Mav, with diesel engines, you have to turn the ignition on and let the glow plug heat up before you try to crank it. I think Steve will do great with this small adjustment!! Happy Trails!! My first visit so it is nice to meet you!✌👊
Agreed, on old Hiaces you can hear a click and see the panel lamps brighten when they are ready - this also takes load off the battery for cranking. Also in that situation of freezing cold it's not a bad idea to carry a good, fully charged battery that's left unconnected - so any battery disasters can be recovered! I would also ensure the van battery plays no part in supplying power to the living quarters..!
Maybe look to invest in a magnetic 120V contact heater for Steve. Put it on the oil pan, plug it in 30 mins before trying to start the engine, and the oil will be warmed up and flow easier.
It’s so fun to watch someone get real high grade knives for the first time and just be in awe of the quality. It’s so sweet. I tell everyone I know that if there’s one thing you need to be high quality in your kitchen it’s your chefs knife
If you go out again in Steve, take an extension cord and run it to the block heater from the Jackery but keep the Jackery inside so it stays warm. It should have enough juice to keep that block warm all night, that will help so much on the starts in cold weather. Thanks for the video. Stay warm.
Mav- you really want to turn the ignition on to allow the engines glow plugs to warm before cranking. A coil light will often illuminate on the dash and go out once they’ve preheated, then you can turn it over. 👍
I think that is spot on it is a Hiace and they are known to be rock solid never owned one but I would like to get one like steve for fishing and exploring trips, even got space to strap a mini bike like the Honda monkey or the Grom in there while traveling
12:15 You may know already but just a tip. The oil that you use is Korean branded and it's called 참기름 which is made out of sesame seeds. You don't want to use as any other vegetable oil or olive oil. Koreans usually put a couple drops only for better taste because it might be too much if you pour like that much for a meal. I love 참기름 though I would recommend putting only a little bit unless if you really really like that.
It’s awesome you decided to make a Korean dish! For those wondering, it’s called “jook” and it’s often made for people when they’re feeling sick. It’s meant to taste somewhat plain, to prevent upsetting stomachs - but you can add different types of meats or add soy sauce on top to make it taste better!
Chinese have the same thing too. Also with the same pronounced name, although it gets translated to English as congee. No idea how that happened but in Cantonese it's pronounced jook, just the same.
New diesel learning curve. Every one gets it moving from gas to diesel. The truck drivers I talked to all seem to like Power Service additive. Grey bottle for summer, white bottle for winter, and red bottle for emergency. Up in northern Minnesota you might as well put some in every time you fill up to avoid the red bottle. Fleet Farm has additive on sale quite often. I keep a bottle in the back of my truck all the time. Also check your owners manual . There should be a cold weather start procedure for the diesel motor when temp's fall below a certain degree. Gotta let them glow plugs heat up. Plug in the block heater when ever possible. Makes start up easier, and you get heat much sooner. Tell your momma Mav I said Hi!
Mav just a heads up Steve is a diesel meaning it has glow plugs instead of spark plugs when you go to start it on a cold morning turn the key on for a few seconds to let the plugs heat up so it will start easier
@@jamiewhitworth7183 Every diesel I’ve owned since the 2000’s have glow plugs. Maybe you’re right though, this old Toyota may not have them. Either way, it’s always good to wait a few seconds before starting this old diesel beauty.

It's a diesel. You should let the candles heat up by turning the key a quarter. Wait for the yellow check light to go out. In extreme cold it might take a bid. The heating elements make noise so you will be able to hear it.
“Goodnight Steve” mav, I stumbled across your channel just before Christmas 2021. I don’t even really know how many videos I’ve watched since then. It’s so fulfilling to be able to go out and camp for a night alone. Granted company is a great thing, but solo camps are needed. Keep up the killer content!

For such a young guy you are so patient with preparing your meals. I have never liked to cook and because you make it look so easy I may try. Cozy little camper with everything you could need!
I’m wondering if a magnetic strip could go above the sink for your new knives. Worth a try, honestly! They shouldn’t move while driving if you get a good quality one!
You can use a magnetic strip as long as it is not just the bare magnet/metal strips like you get from the hardware store. You can get them they look like blocks of wood with the magnet inside, the reason you don't want the bare metal is it'll scratch/mar the blade.
Ayo Oriely definitely has some. Like a blue roll that is covered in fabric really strong like 10$ magnetic tool holder next time You are in the Store. ***
I know it’s kinda weird, but I think it’d be cool to see how you clean up after a long period of camping! Like your Routine when you get back home of reorganizing / cleaning :)
A tip for you, when you stop put it in gear and stop stretching that "parking brake" cable. Some people put it in reverse but I've always put it in first. As long as you are in gear you are much more stable than being in neutral and relying on that stretched out cable applying your brakes.
Just another arm chair RUclips mechanic here lol 😂: My favorite was using “Power Service Diesel 911” additive when temps would go to -20F and below when I lived in AK. We love Steve! Really appreciate all of your solo camping content whether in your truck, Steve or the mini coop camper. My brother and I started our vehicle camping adventure last year and split up at the beginning of this year for some solo adventures. Truly learning how it is to solo camp and appreciate how hard self filming is vs having someone to split the work with. We’ve been watching your adventures over the last year, keep up the good work man!
I would highly recommend 1. Isolating your starting battery for the camper. It's cheap and easy 2. Find a better muffler for that generator lol. Steve is def awesome. Keep on trucking sir

I’m also wheelchair bound and my husband and I have been looking into a small camper for the two of us.
Hey, I’ve seen some of your videos, they are cool. I’m from Ecuador, not a lot of people do camping here. I did it for the first time in my life in June last year, my wife (She’s from Lake Tahoe) and I visited the US. And we went back in November and camped for a week again. The only place you could probably do “winter camping” in Ecuador would be in one of the nevados we have (Chimborazo). You should come here one day and make a video, it’ll probably be too much investment for just one video though. Perhaps you can do a south American tour and camp in some of the nevados we can see snow. And then if you go south to Argentina and Chile you could do winter camping in their winter season. Think about it. That’d be cool to see, then you’d be teaching us how to winter camp in our own countries!
Hey Mav, they make a adapter attachment for your jet boil stove that you can use a regular propane bottle..you can get them on Amazon. They work amazing, no more carrying different types of fuel.
I really enjoy watching your adventures with Steve, Mav. I must say, though, that as a 59-year old woman, I don't think I'm going to be doing a lot of Winter camping like this. It's just too darned cold! I really love the HiAce, though. Very cool!
Problem is definitely electrical related. Diesels need fast cranking to start. Either batteries aren't charging properly or house electrical drew them down. Cold don't help for sure but I think that was not the only problem. I would get that sorted before next adventure with Steve.
Too many people overlook an apu such as the Carrier proheat unit to keep batteries charged and heat the cooling system. They will also provide electrical resistance heat and up to 6kw 110 v.a.c. Powered by a kubota 3 cylinder diesel engine they are quite economical.
Well also a block heater would be good for this. Especially in that type of weather. My old Mercedes 24o would get testy below 62 out here in California. I would have to put dipstick heater and plug in for an hour and it would warm her up and away I would go.
Mav, put 2 more batteries in Steve. Get the highest Cold cranking amp batteries you can find! Wire them positive to positive and negative to negative! Also they make a Goodall JP 12 a 10,000 jump box. they are not cheap but you will be able to keep Steve running all the time! I would get the Goodall if batteries are not an option. Love the vids!!!
You can’t just add batteries to a system, it’s probably only rated for 12v and not 14v. If you start running batteries in series on a 12v system you run the risk of frying electronics.
Positive to positive is parallel wiring. The voltage stays the same but max amp hours increases. The best bet would be 2 12v battle born lithium ion with some solar panels, inverter, and charge controller. That small camper wouldn't need much
Cranking speed is the all important thing for cold starting diesel engines. When you get home put the battery charger on trickle which is about 2amps and let it go all day and night till it brings your new battery up to about 13.5 or so volts. Otherwise the new battery will freeze because they do not come fully charged. In winter it is good to put that battery on trickle about once a week to keep it full. Alternators are made to maintain, not gain. They like to maintain an already well charged battery. A good 12 volt battery will show about thirteen volts on a meter. Twelve volts is not enough. I'm glad your friend helped you. Good video. Pax.
Alternators most definitely do charge. If it only maintained a battery your battery would never charge back up after the initial drain from accessories or starting.
We replaced our glow plugs and our truck starts much better in cold weather. We’re not quite as cold as you but better glow plugs made a big difference. We did get down to some single digit temps recently. Still best to keep it plugged in.
I have never seen this type of camper and hope to see more winter camping with Steve. BTW someone mentioned glow plugs warming up. I think that was a good point. Happy travels
You should get a small weather station for the camper. It would tell you the indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity and it would also tell you what temp it got down to at night outside.
I live in a very urban area and I work or do school work most of the time I'm awake. I really wish I could camp like you Mav. Your videos almost make me feel like I'm there with you and it's a nice vibe :)
Hey Mav, That is a really good recipe for jook or juk. I would highly recommend making dakjuk or chicken jook. It is essentially the same but what I would do is cook a whole chicken in a pot making a soup base out of it and then making the jook same way you did. First recipe would be whole chicken, enough water to cover chicken in a large pot and about 12 cloves of garlic. Let it cook and skim the fat. Basically let it become soup and eat with rice, chopped jalapeños, green onions and salt and pepper. Remaining or left over soup, shred chicken in the broth you essentially made and followed same recipe for vegetables jook, but instead of using water. Use the chicken broth and shredded chicken. I know a whole chicken might be a lot so you can definitely substitute it with a chicken breasts, drum and thigh etc. Keep up the good work and awesome content.
You are truly inspirational with wat you do brother! I especially enjoyed the one where you ate only what you could find ,forage or catch ! Showing everyone how our forefathers survived ! Stay safe and healthy bro and keep up the great videos
Idk if anyone has already mentioned this but I think for camping in the cold, you could setup a separate battery off the circuit of the rest of the camper for just starting the vehicle. That way running stuff in the camper won't drain your starting battery.
Not a mechanic but a small battery shop owner over here from California, sold a couple of gel batteries for an older diesel style sprinter van, the dude spent a good amount of money on electrical component upgrades like upgraded alternator and a self trickle charge system so the battery would never lose charge if he was camping at a spot and not turning on the vehicle for a couple days & dropped the extra monies on the gel batteries from us. Your issue does sound electrical especially from all the cables all over the battery compartment, dude probably hot wired the cables and didn’t manage them just wired them to start and sell the vehicle. Just my observation from a 21 min long video 😅 love you brotha hope you get the beast running properly 🤙🏼

Let the glow plugs run before you start the vehicle every time and then let it warm up for at least 10-15 before you drive it. Diesels aren’t like gasoline vehicles at all. Just some advise for you, my friends told me all that’s when I bought my diesel truck
I'd agree but only add that sometimes it's worth using the glow plugs for 2 or 3 times before trying to start it and also letting the glow plugs run for their time ( they're normally on a timer relay and stay on for 5-10 secs. )
5:22 You might want to be a little more careful pulling out the diesel nozzle. It doesn’t evaporate like gas and will leave a goopy mess on the ground.

Mav I respect the hell out of you! Not only do you go on these minus degree weather! But you go by your self; something being alone can mess with a lot of ppls head.
You need to figure out a way to run a cord from the block heater plug to the inside and keep the engine warm at night and also try to invest in some diesel cans for road trips since the tank is so small. Other than that, Steve seems like a solid unit🤘🤘
That startup at 20:50 sounded like at least one dead glow plug, or not pre-glowing at all. On those little Diesels in Winter the battery always hast be in good shape, as pre-glowing and cranking the engine right after that in cold weather stresses it hard. Engine oil should be according temp rating, too. Block heaters so not solve issues with geling fuel, as that happens in the tank, the pipes, filters, injection pump. None of those is conditioned by a block heater. What helps if you still got Summer Diesel in the tank, is filling up with up to 15% of average gasoline, use that up and refill proper winterized fuel.
Ah, squeaky snow and battery issues 💕 reminds me of putting pots of boiling water under my 94 Integra so it would start without issue in college lol. Many safe and lovely adventures to you and Steve! Stay warm!!
Cooking tip my friend; Give your onions and veg 5 minutes on their own. Throw the garlic in at the last minute and only fry for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Otherwise you kill the flavour of the garlic. Give it a go and you will see a HUGE difference
Hey Mav. Its sounds counterintuitive, but it helps to put our headlights on full bright for 30 seconds before you try start in the cold. The cold causes high internal resistance by freezing the electrolyte, and putting the lights on bright warms the battery up and lowers the internal resistance.
As a western Canadian love the “Worst case Ontario!” Line🤣 Definitely look for a fuel fired coolant heater for that beast. Takes very little fuel and power and you can run it all night and your diesel will start all happy like it’s just a regular day
i love how you always ask your subscibers/ viwers names... shows you really respect them and appreciate them... i dream to have the pleasure of meeting you and one of your vehicles one day
Oh sugar! That was a trip n' a half! 😂 Steve tried his best but the winter weather won... If the floor comes off easily you could insulate it so your feet won't freeze. And maybe bring a gas heater just in case. 🥶 I like your new knives, a good knife makes cooking so much more fun. Japanese really know their stuff when it comes to knives. And campers, too.
Hey Mav next time you try to start it up turn the key one click to let the glow plugs warm the cylinders up when it’s really cold instead of just trying to turn it over.
Maybe look into a dual battery setup used only for starting the truck. Also, make sure your glow plugs are up to snuff. Cycling the glow plugs a few times and doubling your cranking amps will probably do the trick. Great videos. Thanks for making them.
Sounds like you just need a bigger starting battery, or add a 2nd one of the same size. Diesels take some cranking amps to turn over when its that cold. Don’t give up on Steve, he is a really cool camping rig!

You're definitely going to want to keep a small stock pile of anti-gelling diesel additive on Steve at all times. Just find a corner of a cabinet and have a couple bottles there. Also, adding some kind of pass through to run your engine block heater cord into the interior so you can plug it into your Jackery inside the warm living space would be a beneficial upgrade.

This is the truth. There’s a light on the dash that shows you when the plug heater shuts off.

Bless the youth, so much to learn
Also keep an extra jump pack or battery and battery’s also are wayyy better if u can keep them warm should start a lot better with a decently warm battery
@Mav I think the problem with Steve not starting other than it being crazy COLD is to turn the key to accessory for about 10 seconds before actually turning it all the way to start it. Diesel's use glow plugs which require heating up. Hope this helps Mav!
Not sure about mav but that helped me. Thanks bud.
@@michaelkissane6138 such an unreal story thank you for sharing!
@@michaelkissane6138 Wow that gave me goosebumps. I'm so glad he ended up getting out of there okay! I don't think i would be able to pull that off either.
Exactly, the cranking without waiting was driving me nuts lol
Glad to see Steve get out there! Few things with cold weather and diesels. Isolate your batteries. Battery for the truck and batteries for the RV. Have relays in place to allow RV batteries to be used to assist starting if needed. update the electrical so you can utilize the generator for the block heaters/battery warmers.
That's what we do in Scandinavia!
I’ve heard people in the US refer to it as a dual battery system which I think uses a relay like this.
I've never seen a vehicle with two batteries... That's insane! Lol
In the American RV industry they call that a battery isolator or separator - not very creative. It’s exactly what you described.

If you let the glow plugs warm up you might have had enough juice in the battery to start it. Turn the key halfway until the glow plug light goes off. You can burn out your glow plugs by just cold cranking it like that.

Keep that fuel from gelling

So some pro tips for the nice new knives:
keep the edge as long as you can by not scraping the sharp side of the blade along the board when you’re picking stuff up and make sure you fully dry them after cleaning (a lot of high end knives aren’t as rust resistant because they have higher hardness, it’s a trade off)
And as much as that little sharpening gadget you have is easily portable and works ok, definitely invest in a whetstone
2 sided 1000/4000 would be my recommendation
It takes a little learning but the grind on your knives specifically will be easy and there’s a ton of tutorials out there ;)
Enjoy!
Thats one of the big tips I got when I was in college. Don't use the sharp side of the knife to scrape up your food. Use the top side. I am so happy someone else noticed this. :)

And clutch down, then you gearbox is not take starting power...
Maybe look to invest in a magnetic 120V contact heater for Steve. Put it on the oil pan, plug it in 30 mins before trying to start the engine, and the oil will be warmed up and flow easier.

12:15 You may know already but just a tip. The oil that you use is Korean branded and it's called 참기름 which is made out of sesame seeds. You don't want to use as any other vegetable oil or olive oil.

That small camper wouldn't need much
@@MFCSTUDIOS duh my bad. Haha

Bro you worry me flying down those snowy roads. Be careful. I got alot of respect for how positive you are and how independent. Lovin the channel
Good video. Pax.
Not a voltage issue a cca issue. The alternator will absolutely charge the battery up.
Alternators most definitely do charge. If it only maintained a battery your battery would never charge back up after the initial drain from accessories or starting.

Hey Mav,
That is a really good recipe for jook or juk.

We had negative temperatures like this last week in Ontario, Canada. Good on you for surviving the cold and entertaining the viewers 👏
Idk if anyone has already mentioned this but I think for camping in the cold, you could setup a separate battery off the circuit of the rest of the camper for just starting the vehicle. That way running stuff in the camper won't drain your starting battery.
Thousand amp lithium-ion jump kits work very well in a crunch. Only way a few pounds. All about them amps in the cold weather 👍
They are all already set up like that. Battery isolator doesnt allow house to draw any power from starting battery!
Steve’s just getting used to his first winter up North. He’s a champ.
I live in Ireland and my plan was to buy a work van and convert it and take across Europe etc. But you've definitely inspired me to import one of these from Japan. Thing is so sick.
Customs is going to hurt the pocket. Good luck. Best bet find a sucker who already did!
I’d go for the work van. Easier to stealth camp.
@@Censortubes Yeah, they're hard to find. Some similar in the UK, but not exactly what I want. I don't mind paying for something that's worth it though.
@@notabiologist7162 I was thinking about for that reason. But I'm not gonna do a whole lot of time in cities, so I'd rather have something more comfortable and with windows for light etc.
@@cryder131 yea if you want to fork it over and can , find a super nice one and send it in can be worth it. Id go the local route myself and if all else fails, just import a new age one Hahah. I dunno about Ireland ways much, but usa was 25 years on some hot ticket vehicles.
Let the glow plugs run before you start the vehicle every time and then let it warm up for at least 10-15 before you drive it. Diesels aren’t like gasoline vehicles at all. Just some advise for you, my friends told me all that’s when I bought my diesel truck
“Steve” must feel like pure luxury compared to the back of your truck. Awesome!
16:34 i love the trailer park boys reference "worst case ontario"
I like how you actually cook, instead of just like cold ravioli. It’s refreshing, and steve is awesome. Stay safe
Don’t forget to heat up the glow plugs. Just turn the key on for a couple of seconds then crank her up.
i was just about to say that xD
I think steve is an electric truck
I'd agree but only add that sometimes it's worth using the glow plugs for 2 or 3 times before trying to start it and also letting the glow plugs run for their time
( they're normally on a timer relay and stay on for 5-10 secs. )
Was looking forward to the first camping trip with “Steve”!!!! Such a cool vehicle, Keep up the killer content Mav!!!
5:22 You might want to be a little more careful pulling out the diesel nozzle. It doesn’t evaporate like gas and will leave a goopy mess on the ground.
As a guy from Ontario, the fact Mav said “worst case Ontario” made my day ahahhaa 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
When
Classic Ricky from trailer park boys lol 😂
Greetings from Alberta, fellow Canadian!!

As another Ontario resident it did make my day to
Thanks for the awesome vids and inspiration, I just got home from my first multi-day truck camp!! spent the first night in an abandoned campground right by a river in the Sierra Madres and the second night in the middle of the desert! Keep on truckin Mav!!
Update: wow Mav your community is amazing I’m just a humble British guy trying to hit 1k this year!
Mav your such a huge inspiration for a guy who just started a travel and adventure channel! I have learned so much from you and can’t wait to see this video Steve is gonna be an epic feature I’m sure
If you are taking inspiration from Mav, you got a subscribe from me
@@MrKblanchard ah thank you so much dude! I’m British and older but I have some great content planned for this year due to Mav the legend
And from me
@@itsmeecjay4769 thank you so much! I’m still learning as I go! But taking huge inspiration from Mav the total legend
I’ll sub just because I’m British and watch mav too 🤙🏽
Mav I respect the hell out of you! Not only do you go on these minus degree weather! But you go by your self; something being alone can mess with a lot of ppls head.
At least now you know what needs to be done for Steve to be winter ready ! Easy fixes ! Keep on Keeping on !!
You need to figure out a way to run a cord from the block heater plug to the inside and keep the engine warm at night and also try to invest in some diesel cans for road trips since the tank is so small. Other than that, Steve seems like a solid unit🤘🤘
I just said that too 👌
And diesel additive
Hey Mav! You should look at getting some LED interior bulbs for Steve, they might help with reducing the load and draw on your AUX battery too.
Stay warm!!
I love the 94 integra! ha
Cooking tip my friend; Give your onions and veg 5 minutes on their own. Throw the garlic in at the last minute and only fry for 30 seconds or until fragrant.
Otherwise you kill the flavour of the garlic. Give it a go and you will see a HUGE difference
Thank u. We learn.
Hey Mav. Its sounds counterintuitive, but it helps to put our headlights on full bright for 30 seconds before you try start in the cold. The cold causes high internal resistance by freezing the electrolyte, and putting the lights on bright warms the battery up and lowers the internal resistance.
I watch mavs videos for the comment sections cos you just learn cool shit
Will need to try that trick, my Toyota is struggling to start when below -15c. Thanks for the tip.
I love everything about Steve: Japanese, RHD, manual transmission, Toyota, camper, small. ❤❤❤
It’s awesome to see Mav being able to sit down on a couch and eat instead of having to lay on a bed, Steve is next level 👌😎
He really deserves this upgrade 😁
I agree
As a western Canadian love the “Worst case Ontario!” Line🤣
Definitely look for a fuel fired coolant heater for that beast. Takes very little fuel and power and you can run it all night and your diesel will start all happy like it’s just a regular day
glad im not the only one who caught that one! doest take rocket appliances to realize its the best way
@@brennenrulez I bet those chicken fingers he was eating in the earlier part of the video were the good kind...the $8 ones
Whenever mav uploads it makes my day!
i love how you always ask your subscibers/ viwers names... shows you really respect them and appreciate them... i dream to have the pleasure of meeting you and one of your vehicles one day
ADD ON: you may not realize but a lot of us look up to you and appreciate what you teach us
He always turns the key one right away. Not sure he knows to heat the glow plugs. That truck requires about 30 sec or more to warm.
Sounds like you just need a bigger starting battery, or add a 2nd one of the same size. Diesels take some cranking amps to turn over when its that cold. Don’t give up on Steve, he is a really cool camping rig!
