- For my first time painting, I'll say that it's not the best, not the worst type of situation. The amount of time you spend on prep work alone is so time-consuming to make little mistakes that can just ruin everything. Nothing that can't be fixed, Once we wet sand and polish I think the paint will come out perfect! I could be wrong though.

You have literally built one of the nicest communities. Most people here offer helpful suggestions without talking down. Great work Tanner!
I'm currently painting my wrecked STI and I've talked to more Tinsmiths and painters as I would like to, I'll give you the pointers:
1. When doing any type of work 9:25 your space is critical. If you start comprising when painting it's going to show up in the finished product.
2. Mix everything, that primer I'm guessing it's been sitting for a while, mix the primer, mix the reducer, mix the hardener, mix the solution.
3. You did one thing I LOVED extremely clean, IPA and wax and grease remover is your bf when painting.
4. I'd rather have runs in the coats than have no coats, it's far less work to fix the runs than it is to set up the equipment again for a second round of paint/primer/clear coats.
Good luck man, keep striving you're doing great so far!
With clear coat, I use a head lamp on my head while painting. Another trick with clear coat is multi coating lightly, takes some time to judge tacking and requires very clean room since more layers to trap crap in.
How well has the head lamp worked for you, I’ve got a small Milwaukee one I can use for the panels 👌
@@Smeedia i do the same i have a military style bump helmet i mount two 700 lumen lights to for clear coating helps immensely
Perfection is rarely attained. The learning process is all that matters. We don't know growth without some pain. May the Lord bless you
So true my mans! Lessons were learned. But I’m glad that were able to wet sand and fix it 🙌
You did a killer job for your first time doing an entire body without a full booth and lighting. The fender can be sanded and polished. Every clear gets polished once laid down (atleast the good ones)
Once it’s all polished and cleaned up I’ll be wayyyy happier with it. But for my first time I’m pretty happy with the outcome 🥳 more lighting would definitely help 😅
@@Smeedia I'm all about it! That white is gonna look 🔥 with the rx7 body once you cut and buff. Can't wait till September to see it ❤️
It’s no bore to watch work on this beauty dude. Prep work is important. Keep it coming!
Have a looooot of prep work to go for all our panels next week excited to see this thing with everything back on and polished up nicely 🥳
You're doing better than me. I'm still watching other people do everything 😆
You’ll get there! Any luck with the FRS?
@@Smeedia just trade offers and tire kickers so far. If I don't have any solid interest by the weekend, I'm putting the stock wheels and coilovers back on and dropping the price
I’m always impressed with your ability to tackle such a diverse array of challenges when it comes to your cars. I’m still proud of myself when I successfully install basic mods 😂 Really enjoying the RX-7 series!
I can’t wait to see this thing fully done 🥳 we gotta start somewhere and mods are the best place to start🎉
STILL SUCH AN UNDERRATED CHANNEL
So I'm sure you know probably by now but when your spraying hold the gun upright and paint left to right and use full motion strokes and overlap each stroke halfway. Never spray a car body up and down like you were here in this video. And spray a tad bit slower. With more consistency in your strokes.
Tbh I couldn’t figure out how to rotate the fan pattern at first 😂😅 once I got that worked out I went back to left to right
White is shooting in the dark especially if you’re moving quickly with the job (you can buy a gun light)That’s why consistency of your spray pattern matters. I’d be more scared currently of when the paint sucks back seeing mapping from pre primer. But don’t be so hard on yourself for your first time! Also get a mirka s blade way better then a razor blade
It's hard! I laid some epoxy primer for the first time a few weeks ago on my project 1972 Blazer frame. Once I turned the flow down and convinced myself that it doesn't need total coverage on every pass I stopped running paint.
I had that perfect spot with the old gun but have yet to find it with the new one. 😅 once you get that solid set up it’s 👌
There are a lot of knowledgeable people in the comments already and I'm not a professional painter, but, when doing my own DIY paint job on a track bike I found fixing runs with masking tape to be very effective.
Just lick the run with the tape and then do another coat. Feasible when it's not the final coat 😅
I’ll keep that in mind with the other panels 😅 still have a handful more to paint up lol
Runs are easy to work out....its burning through the clear that'll get ya! Learned that when i DIY'd old Bugeye. Keep at it!!! Looks great 👍
Fixing those runs should be a fun time 😅 I’m just glad they are fixable. Burning through clear would be an absolute nightmare 🥲
@Smeedia when you wetsand clear, just be sure to stay away from edges and sharp body lines (not that FDs have any) and you'll be golden!
Another thing my paint instructor taught me was to drape my air hose over my shoulder. I'm right handed so the air hose would be behind me and draped over my left shoulder. This insures you never drag your hose in your paint
I think you're doing a great job for self teaching yourself. I like guys that take the initiative to do things themselves
Work on keeping your 6 ish inch gun distance and your spray speed more consistent. I think you're well on your way to being a proficient painter. Keep it up
I tried keeping the hose up night it kept getting caught on the lift 😅 overall I’m pretty happy with how it’s come out except for that one rear fender, but learning curve with everything 🙌
The settings for your sprayer is just a suggestion. You have the pressure and volume up faster than you can move. Back off on it a lil bit and you won't feel so rushed.
Will try that 🫡 I had set it up similar to how my old one was. Two entirely different guns from what I was expecting
Looks good man. Don’t worry I got runs on my 2004 Celica when I tried to re spray an area where I sanded through clear coat back in the day, and it ran and that was a tiny rectangle. Think paint always runs.
Yeah man that's awesome. Looking forward to seeing the car get cut and polished. I'm sure you won't have any issues getting those runs out.
I can’t wait to see it all polished up, those runs will take a little time to get out. As long as I’m careful with the knife we should be solid 🙌
Not gonna lie man, super cool you have the patience to even attempt this. When it comes to body work, I have the patience/attention span of a fruit fly. Keep it up man, you’ll get better every day.
I was the same way tbh, I despise body work but gotta learn it at some point 😅
Looks great man! Worst case scenario you have to clear coat again. You got this!
Is that allowed? Can you clear over clear? 😅
@@Smeedia I've seen lowriders with up to 12 coats of clear! Makes the paint look soooooo deep! Somehow it works though.
In the end, they paid more for the paint job than they did building the car.
I think you could make watching paint dry interesting, lol. The car actually looks really amazing, I forgot there was an antenna in the back, that delete came out great!
Super happy with the antenna delete, looks like it was never there 🥳
Paint is so intimidating I have so much respect for you even attempting it not to mention getting that good of a result on your first time! It looks good man!
Ohhhh crap that’s sealer if I am correct, along with the clumps before the setup you gotta open the fan on the spray gun a lil wider. Also when painting, priming, or sealing, you gotta work the panels left to right. You can’t spray the small of a fan up and down, dunno what’s gonna happen but I am always here to watch and who knows maybe help. Like you do every day, you have never ever not answered one of questions of the years.
I tried keeping the fan around 10” or so when painting. Tbh didn’t know how to swap the fan direction at first 😂
Appreciate the effort and the drive to want to do this yourself. Painting is by far the hardest thing to master when it comes to cars.
Dude everyone makes it look so much easier than it actually is, speed, distance, prep, gun settings etc. so much goes into it, but I’m game to keep it going. Can’t ever get any better without trying 🙌🥳
First time, it's a learning curve. Stay strong🚀🌛
The razor blade trick works pretty slick but only after the paint has cured, then wet sand the spot with 1500, 2000, 2500 and buff out
Going to wait for that clear to cure cure before even touching it 😅 but I’m glad it’s fixable 🔥🙌
Not me stressing out watching you paint. I think I bit off all my finger nails.
Came out great though! Better than anything I’ve done 🎉
Definitely a hard skill to learn but one that will def one in handy 🙌🥳 I was stressing about those meds ups 😅
Thats how you learn Bro.
Practice makes perfect 👌
19:00 sheeeeew I thought I was gonna be much worse according to the name of the video, just be careful with the blade when trying to get the runs out. You can sand with wet 1500 and it will take forever but you shouldn’t burn thru, and after that you can run over it with 2000 grit to follow up. After that you can use 2500 and 3000 on a d.a. with a soft interface pad and you will be golden.
That’s the plan, with how big the run area is, I’d rather take my time with a higher grit than risk burning through the clear 🫡
When I seen your pace on the quarter panel, I just said "nooooo :(" under my breath. When fixing the runs on the quarter, be careful to not get the clear too hot, Ive seen the way you detail so I know youll be careful just a heads up and yes on some colors its almost like shooting blindfolded when it comes to spraying clear, a few practice strokes on a panel not going on the car would help you mentally visualize your spray as well as practicing your overlaps (you want about 1/2 overlap per stroke) that and a headlamp helps!. Look you did a really good job, seriously, you tackled a very challenging paint color and had only a few hiccups that you immediately knew why it happened. I think once the car is out in actual daylight youll feel a bit better about your performance!
I only razor blade out runs in clear and only after it's completely dry. I'm a novice so I like to keep myself well within my skill range when painting lol.
That’s the plan for the clear, going to let it harden up and go at it. I thought I could do it with the base 😂😅
Wow the whole shop has become the paint booth! I used to paint semi truck wheels. The fumes are WHOOO! Stay safe T😅. The annoy part is the waiting between coats lol. Great progress my dude!
Made sure we could hang up that plastic everywhere we could 😂😅 I’ve got a mark when painting thankfully. The wait time is annoying but so crucial to get right 😅
I just got my gd wrx running tonight! This is nice to come in and sit down and watch!
Eyyyyy how’s she running?! 🥳🥳🥳
@@Smeedia gotta bleed the cooling system and bolt the cat back up and it’s good! It’s pretty much stock other than a 255 lp fuel pump and a Perrin turbo inlet, which sucked ass to install btw
@@kylekennedy21you leave the intake manifold on to install the inlet? 👀
@@Smeedia had the intake off. It was just a little bit of a pain fitting between the factory fuel rains and the wrx intake
Great job Grasshopper 🔥🪠
Thank you thank you 🙏🙏
Lambo doors on this thing?
That B-Roll was dope with Blue in the background. 👌
This is so awesome! So many guys on RUclips make this look easy and its *really* not. Its good for people to see what can, and will, go wrong and how to fix it and recover the situation. Plus whats cooler than doing this stuff yourself and learning new things and growing your skill set. Huge props, this car is going to be great when you're done and you'll always know 'I built this'
100% every video I watched everyone made it look SO EASY, primer and base aren’t too bad. Pending you don’t get runs. But clear coat you can’t even see where it’s spraying 😂
Good learning lessons for the next one we do 🙌
I worked for a painter for years and i can tell you that every paint job has flaws. I used to call our painter Niagara because he would leave so many waterfalls. Sand and buff takes care of all the stuff.
Good job regardless man! Its a lot of work, I'm doing body work and prepping my car to get painted as well lol
Don't sweat the runs. Wet sand then buff and you'll forget it ever happened. You need to wet sand and buff if you want it to look perfect anyways.
Very true, I was so hyped it was all laying out smooth until that massive run 😂😅
Another couple tips. Do rehearsal for every single panel before you spray it. You want long smooth strokes, no short choppy strokes. Spray the trim and edges first, then the body of the panel. Example: spraythe wheel well and hood edge first then spray the body of front fender. Don't completely let go of the trigger. You can feel a "notch" before the notch, only air comes out, after the notch is when paint comes out. You want air the entire time you're spraying. When you let completely off the trigger, a blotch of paint comes out when you hit the trigger again. Back-off on pressure and flow a little bit so you can slow down. I ran my deville bliss gun at like 18psi the last I sprayed.
Wax on wax of danni son. You will definitely going to be a karate master by the time you’re done.
Practice makes perfect 🎉
at this point you've pretty much done every single job in the automotive industry to your cars, the only thing left is collision repair. 😅
We’re working up to that 😂😅
I totally would’ve watched you sand paint for an hour
I promise you don’t wanna see that 😂😅
Its not as fun to watch or let alone even do
@@JLWalker101 you underestimate my ability to hyper focus on anything
@@JLWalker101 As my way to support the amazing content where we can learn along with I'd 100% watch it in full cuz I'm poor as atm, inflation and crappy job is kicking me in the butt xD
Even though it's super rare I'll end up doing any of this myself, it's still great to see how it's done with explanations as to what/when/where/why n gives me confidence that if it came to it, I probably could do it (tho nowhere near as good/efficiently for sure)
@@joshbates6274 what i was trying to say is its very hard to make it entertaining or even do the filming at the level he normally does without people to help film so he doesnt have to take 10 to 15 minutes reseting cameras everytime he moves to a new area of the car hence why i said it wouldnt be as fun to watch or let alone even do
Wet sanding might take longer than a knock down and respray. Keep your head up. You’ll get it…props for full send with the painting
I ordered a full kit for the run repair, 🧑🔧 once those runs are gone and it’s polished it should be 🔥 definitely a learning curve with painting
@@Smeedia there’s nothing like the feeling when everything is prepped/tacked and ready to go… you just have to accept that when your cleaning the spray gun your gonna either be on cloud 9 dancing around cause it went well or all bummed out cause one of many things went wrong. Just have to try and control the controllables.
Beautiful white, love it! Any idea what a little ticking noise from the engine would be when letting off the gas?
Only happens when letting off the gas pedal? 👀
Nothing but respect.

I get it big dawg, cause I too am my hardest critic but to even try to paint a car an have never done it and it seems to be pretty damn good my guy! Take the win and the lesson and try again sir! You are a champ for even doing dawg so it’s two thumbs up from me!!
Appreciate it my mans, I was so hyped everything was laying out smooth up until that one quarter panel 😂 I’m just glad that it’s something we can fix, definitely a huge learning curve with painting. Everyone online made it look so easy 😅
@@Smeedia Well soon you will be making it look easy too!
Beautiful work so far, I’ve never had much luck with painting either lol
That one spot of clear got me good 😂

Always appreciate the support my mans 🫶🔥 dude I did not realize how quick materials add up for painting 😅
Looking man im impress tanner u star by modification ,built and now paint whoooooooooooooo ❤❤❤ nice work
Trying to learn it all 🥳🙌
I tried repainting my old '03 Tiburon and couldn't even get past the sanding phase before primer. Totally ruined the car and gave up. Maybe one day I'll try again with another car. It helps to start small. And maybe it helps to watch you do it first.
It’s definitely a bigger under taking than I originally thought. Alot of prep work into it. Smaller things are definitely a good place to start
Painting a car yourself is one of those things where it's on the line between being too much & reasonable. I don't know how else to put it really.
My friend painted his sr20det swapped Nissan NX2000 in his dilapidated garage. It wasn't perfect, but he did it himself, along with everything else done to that car. Aside from the ecu program & dyno tune anyway. He went with a very heavy metallic flake in a dark blue base, reminiscent of bass boats and whatnot. That garage had no business even acting as a temp paint booth. Overall though, the car was very "period correct" for it's era. He also had a 96 Impala SS at the time.
That shit looks fine on camera dawg. It's more than up to SEMA quality standards even at this point 😆
If it’s a skill you can get decent at it’s definitely worth the savings long term if doing multiple cars. But my lord it’s more difficult than what it looks like 😅
White paint usually runs easily. When you paint your paint strokes should have 50% overlap. Start off the panel end off the panel .
i think you did great this first time its nothing that cant be fixed. the new setup worked well. in fact i think thats what was part of the problem. you could see it when you laid down your first layer. it covered so much and so fast the paint immediatly looked wet. your old setup was not as powerfull and you had time to slowly apply the layers.
That’s what I was noticing as well, the new gun and air set up worked way more efficiently. I was still used to having to go a bit slower 😅
You did amazing!!! I agree, you did go too slow for the clear coat. You are always better off doing 7 thin coats then 3 thick. I did the exact same thing the first few times i painted 😅 for the roof i have found it best to do just around the pillars then do the center of the roof after. It can help fix that issue. A weird trick to clear coat is to use a semi gloss base and high gloss clear. You can also smooth and dull the paint and work with the reflection for laying clear. I opted for semi base then high gloss as i found it easier. Also makes the car look different depending on light.
I guess the inflatable booth is invisible? Was expecting to see some sort of bouncy house thing. Guessing it didn't fit?
It fits but I don’t have a way to move the Mazda right now lol 😅
12:08 shit….. I hope you re scotch brighted all the parts of the panel you are trying to recover….. 🙏other wise you are either gonna get solvent pop or the base and clear will not stick over time. Damnit I hope you get this figured out before the spot I am at on this video. Best of luck tanner
Got that all sorted and scuffed before spraying 🫡
Don't be to hard on yourself bro. Painting a whole car is very difficult and I think you ok for your 1st time. Clear coat on white is a beotch lol. Practice makes perfect 💯
I’m just glad that it’s fixable with some wet sanding. I was so hyped it was coming out smooth until that point 😂
It's a trial and error process brother. I said earlier that noone does a perfect paintjob first time. It's what you do with it and how much you learn from it.
I’m just glad that we can fix the clear on that fender. Definitely a learning experience for next time but overall outside of that fender I’m pretty happy with it 🙌 the base coat run had me panicking at first 😂
@@Smeedia I think the white RX-7 will be quite sharp when it's done.
Side to side
this is job man 👌
What size paint gun tip did you use for the primer?
White cars are hard to clear coat without good lighting. That said, they are pretty forgiving if you mess it up. I reckon you'll end up re clearing that rear quarter tho (depends on how much experience you have getting out runs I guess)
Better than a tesla paint job!
The problem with white is you can’t see a damn thing! Spray looks like it disappears as soon as you’re done with second coat.
Dude for real, you cannot see anywhere your spraying 😂😅
Let's GO!!
🫡🙌🫡🙌
Should have gone with the purple 😏 Just kidding, the white looks great as well
It’s not too late ⏰ 😅
Is there a difference between powder coating and using spray? Seems like both achieve the same results.
I’ve seen people powder coat an entire car before, but you need a BIG oven to be able to bake the car 😅
I don’t know if it’s a bad thing that this is giving me confidence to paint my WRX…. Already have a color chosen out too.
Do it 👀 you’ll make some mistakes but if you can keep the mistakes to the clear coat that’s all fixable 🙌
@@Smeedia amethyst black, McLaren color. It’ll be a bit but I think ima do it🫡
@@grundy6921I hear black is a real PIA to spray, will look SO good though!
hard to tell on just video but looks like your paint feed is way too high, need to increase air pressure or decrease your flow rate. shoot for around 30PSI with thinner poly paints and lay a few coats spaced out between your flash times to stop the runs a bit. also a paint shaker is a good investment for the chunky cans that have sat a while. another thing to consider is climate, read the data sheet and make sure you're doing your best to spray in the right temp and humidity zone for what you're laying. love the progress man, good stuff!
Normally I’m around 20-22 PSI at wide open from what 3Ms card told me to use, i accidentally went WAY too high once and the thing turned into a squirt gun 😂 temp and humidity is something I’ve been trying to work with pending weather as well, the heaters definitely help a good amount. Learning curve with painting but overall not bad except that fender 😅
@@Smeedia yeah those hvlp guns will get you haha. We use 3m guns as well and I've found ramping them kind of high works well with thinner stuff. Just have to adjust feed and see what it wants depending on the paint. Test panels with some scrap metal really help figure out your settings before hitting the job too. I just bought a clapped Miata so I'm in the same boat haha.
@@danieljohnson1640 next time I get some spare body panels ima hold onto them to use as test panels. What’s the plan with the Miata?! 👀
@@Smeedia for now, undo literally all of the previous owners mistakes. Fix rust like crazy, it's almost ready for the paint booth. Then start working on getting a turbo setup put together. Also got to get rid of the terribly welded diff and get an LSD. So much man, so much haha
@@danieljohnson1640I feel you on all of that, idk what it is about the older Mazdas but they get rust in the weirdest spots 😅
How's the noise on the Dewalt? My CAT compressor is shitting the bed...thinking of upgrading to a 50 or 60 gal🙃
Honestly it’s not too bad, my husky 20 gallon was louder. So far been pretty happy with it 🫡

Thing is as crispy as a Pringle off the assembly line 🍪
2:12 ohhhhh no, I don’t know how this ends up but the primer not being fully mixed is gonna be a bad time. I hope this isn’t the videos problem….
With that primer it doesn’t really mix up until it’s mixed with the solvent 🙏
You can always do a flow coat. It looks good though
I’ll read into it a bit more, never heard of flow costing before. Just did a quick search on it. That rear right fender got me bad 😂
It’s basically sanding down the clear to get rid of any runs and orange peel and then applying additional coats of clear. Lots more work but will give you great results
8:09 what happened to using the inflatable paint booth? Did i miss something
Yeah, this was my question as well. I was full on expecting to see one of those bouncy house looking things!
I mentioned it somewhere in the video, waiting on a chassis dolly to be able to move the Mazda around, don’t have. Way to take it off the rack right now to inflate the booth 😅
@@Smeedia yea i heard that after i commented. I should've waited until the end 😂
@@Smeedia I'm curious to see how it works. I have 3 cars to paint this summer and was thinking of buying one. But I want you to test it for me first 😳

Runs are far less work to correct than an entire car sprayed dry to avoid any runs.
Very true, as annoying as the runs are we can at least fix those 💪
Definitely 600 I learn that u can even color and clear with just 600 but if u do want to make more smooth the 2000
Don't start or stop your gun on the car. That is where your buildups and runs are happening.
Will keep that in mind when I do the rest of the panels 🫡
The primer looked like it needed more stirring 😟
It’s pretty chunky until it mixes with the solvent 😅
very well done :)
Thank you 🥳 a little clean up on the runs and we should be golden 🙏
Uh oh, not a good looking thumbnail o_O
Gonna finish pulling my engine out of my 05 sti, your vids are crucial for me XD.
Hoping everything looks okay and I can replace headgaskets
Fingers crossed for ya! Hopefully the pull goes smooth 🙌🫡
😎👍🏻👍🏻
Your getting runs because your fan setting is too narrow. Open your fan control to the widest it will go. Also, open your flow control to the max. The key to great automization and spread is to let the GUN do its job. Make sure you keep 50% over lap and the gun the same height above the panels to eliminate the runs.
What pressure where you showing at the gun? It seemed to be spraying too much base and looked blotchy. When the paint comes out, it should look like mist. Lastly, dont sliw down like that. You're spraying too heavy and it will run like crazy. You're trying too hard to make it look flat while spraying by spraying heavy.
Bro… get bodevision to paint it for you… your first paint project is a seam project? 😂

Have you heard of the tape trick for runs? Just take a piece of painters tape and dab the run lightly and pull most of it off before it dries.
I read some stuff on it and people seemed to be back and forth on it. Majority of what I read was wait until it’s cured, cut it down then wet sand 👀 after the base cost incident I was a little hesitant 😂😅
