In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing - and no one - gets in her family’s way.

As for the cautionary moral of this "been there/seen it" story? Katherine Waterston's father, Sam, delivered the same message, _way more_ plausibly, in the L&O Season 12 episode "Access Nation" .

Saw it today. It was one of the worst movie I’ve seen all year. This trailer is very misleading, also the trailer showed all the interesting parts. The ending was extremely flat, and I was ready to leave by the third act of the movie.
I also noticed in the trailer that a lot of the “horror” scene never made it into the final movie. Like how AIA asked the little boy if he wanted to see what it looked like.
I was thinking this as well. For me the AI generating/glitching were unsettling when the scene became so long to a point that i got annoyed. Every good set up for an interesting point was ruined by a dumb idea. The end where the other family had broken in was good until the whole swatted idea came into play. Horrible movie with no genuine purpose other than the internet allows AI to be everywhere.

If a trailer doesn’t get my attention in the first 30 seconds, I pass. This one got my attention.
So they sort of ruined the entire plot with the trailer. Revealing that its not just an AI that's got it programming messed up and is instead some sort of monster/alien thing is a plot reveal that should have been left for the movie.
The monster was generated by the Ai. It's a joke about how horrible Ai art used to be.

I just got out from seeing this movie and let me tell you something! The only horror/scary thing about this movie is how real this is going to become at some point in time. Technology is completely taking over. The other week I had stopped at a Wendy’s drive-through and they had an AI robot take my entire order! No human interaction until I got to the window.
It’s crazy and scary. Most people may laugh and talk about how this would never happen but someday you’ll remember this movie when they come out with the device similar to the one seen in the movie. AIA may not be real or exist right now, but at some point in time, it may!
