How to Make L-Ported Subwoofer Box - DIY

- Yet the easiest and quickest subwoofer box to make, the L-ported subwoofer enclosure. I bet you see a lot of DIY subwoofer boxes being showcased on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and even here on RUclips made out of L-ported or some may other call it transmission or T-Lined boxes. That is because it is quick and easy to build, everything is using the same material from baffle to enclosure to port out of MDF sheet!
Let's dive into the fun part right away!
- First part is the unboxing of a brand new Pioneer TS-W311D4 12" Champion Series Subwoofer with Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil.
- I used the RE Audio L-Ported speaker box calculator on their website to compute the right box for the subwoofer. Here's the link reaudio.com/box.php. You need to activate and enable Adobe Flash Player on your browser in order to use the subwoofer box calculator.
- TS-W311D4 has a factory free-air resonance of 43Hz, but I tuned beyond the Fs and tuned down to 31Hz in this ported enclosure.
- Resulting box volume is 2.001 cubic feet equivalent to the 31Hz tuning including the total port displacement.
- Layout the calculated values on Tinkercad to get a graphic overview. Here's the link www.tinkercad.com/things/19pH...
- Roundover router bit to round the edges inside the port to increase good air flow.
- Then the rest is the whole nine yards of subwoofer box building. So sit back and relax while having a cold beverage and some snacks to watch this satisfying DIY subwoofer video.
- Carpeted with charcoal dark speaker carpet. Used a rubber contact cement to adhere the material into the box.
- Most favorite part: The assembly. Tinned the exposed copper part of a 12 gauge speaker wire to ensure coolness and connectivity.
- Wired the champion series pioneer subwoofer into parallel to get a 2 Ohms final impedance.
- Bolted the subwoofer using a 4mm Allen Hex bolts and 4 prong Tee nuts under it.
- Showcase the final product like a champion!

what size of box do I need to make for an 8" JBL sub??? the speaker is only 200mm wide so if I make the box 300mm wide by 200mm deep and 400mm long will that be ok?

Wooow Beautifully crafted sub box man i love it!!! I wish had a nice table saw to cut my pieces straight. My boxes tend to have little gaps because of cutting the pieces free handed.thank god for caulk! Where i'm from tools are super expensive but i make do with little that i have to make them🇹🇹

Very well done project bro .... u have been progressing a lot .... port area a little oversize . Might be looking for spl ....some 45's to smooth air flow .. a cross brace and these driver can nearly crack everthing in its path .. i've been using the single coil one in a honda and its awesome .... tsw311s4.. good job .. congratulations ..

Does the shape of the subwoofer box have an impact? I wanted to make it so it fits behind the rear wheel/strut tower to take up less space.
Hello Captain, no. Any shape will do. Just calculate the volume, size, port area, to get an accurate box. Use Bass Box Pro 6.

hey there, i was making a speaker, does putting glue and sealant on the edges make a difference..... I used alot :)

All of these fancy names, for a standard bass reflex box.
Question... when you were in the RE Box Calculator program, you entered a port width of 2" (inches)...
When you went to the Box Port Design II program, you entered a Port Dia [width] of 4" (inches).
Did I miss something? I'm asking b/c I'm about to do a box design; I'm interested in using the programs in your videos & I don't want to make a mistake.

Bass Box Pro 6 is very accurate but very expensive. You can use WinISD, it is free to download for Windows. Still very accurate.

I have an American bass Xmas 12 inch subwoofer what will be the appropriate box size for that????
Hello Crisanto, I calculated the TS parameters of that subwoofer and it can output a -3dB @ 24.9Hz in a 1.5 cubic feet of ported enclosure.
Does it matter where the port is located? on the same side of the woofer or on another side of the box?
Anywhere. Low frequency is omni-directional.

Hello, yes you can use any port design to any 8" subs. I suggest getting at least 500w RMS 8" sub from Skar, Sundown or Digital Designs. They small but very powerful.

What type of cabinet do you recommend for it to deliver bass in every area like JBL PartyBox? I feel after entering the parameters provided (The layout on Tinkercad) I feel the Subwoofer might be tuned closer to 35 - 37Hz. But the enclosure looks beautiful!

In the Re box calculator, why does it say 2 inch for port width and then in the box port software i see it as 4 inches??
Hello Amrika, good question. Box-port Design is only a circle port so I converted the square perimeter into equivalent circle perimeter. That is why I need to use RE Audio's calculator for the port.

Hello Miguel, nice to have you here. On the L port box calculator on RE Audio (reaudio.com/box.php), you can calculate the tuning frequency marked as Fb. I just used another software just to get a clearer measurements of the small parameters using the Box-Port Design II on PC.

Yes I use glue. Not leaking when you cut the wood perfectly square and apply enough glue then clamp overnight.

Quite a high tuning, i suggest 20hz up for better bass and sql
20hz tuning is expensive to setup. First you need a subwoofer with a resonance of at least 25Hz, and that only available on super expensive brands like Sundown, DD, B2 or JL Audio.

This one is in Parallel to achieve the least DC resistance which is 2 Ohm.
