Great video. As a woodshop teacher I can recommend if you keep your screws a bit further away from the edges of the MDF corners you can avoid the splitting on the ends. MDF if very finiky so its a good idea to to some test drilling on corner pieces to get the hang of it first. Again, great explanation!
This is always my fear with using screws on the edge of any wood. Even tho i did pilot, some till split :/. Usually i use brads, clamps, router, jasper jig, etc. But on this box, its all about what a guy could do at home. Without buying $20 in clamps, an air compressor they may or may not have, a brad gun, etc. So screws it it. If one cracks i Usually just fill the crack with glue and move on. Is there any way to help prevent the cracking? Besides coming a bit further in, and drilling a deeper pilot?
@@ATCA you can increase the diameter of your pre drilled hole. There is a size that is guaranteed not to split for every screw. You may find it doesn't have as much grabbing force when you screw it in. You could just use the bigger drill bit for those holes near edges if this is the case.
yall can skip the screws too with MDF. that gorilla glue is pretty fricken tight on its own but i guess you'd need clamps instead of the screws which would probably cost more.
Trevor You sir give the best advice I've seen about building cabs." Follow instructions given". Almost like the manufacturer knew something. The link to the box calculator is great thank you. It saves a lot of math. I'm off to look at more of your videos.
This is actually extremely helpful for someone like me who doesn't own any ripping saw to cut the panels and I also have a small vehicle so I can't just load a 4x8 sheet into my vehicle. Plus I live in a small efficiency apartment and don't have room to cut wood.
Two tips to avoid all those splits, MDF is very strong when running screws through but very weak when running screws into the edge. 1) Do NOT put screws into the end gain within 2-3 inches of another edge. 2) Drill largest diameter possible pilot holes and drill them slightly deeper than the length of your screws. The drill bit must equal the diameter of the screw shank at a minimum, slightly larger is better so the threads barely cut into the MDF then use a few drops of glue in the edge grain holes and be careful not to over tighten and strip out the hole (be careful NOT to fill holes with glue, cause hydrolock splits)

Can I use that same program to bud a wall in my truck?
If you know how to scale it and overlook certain things
I sub for sure bro one note predrill before the screw so to avoid tears on the material, anyway awesome build bro 😊
I am interested in doing a 15in DJ-style Powered sub box. Can you off any guidance or tweaking of this setup for that purpose?? Priority for me is compact and tight.
15 and compact don't really go hand in hand. But pm me. We can try
I confuse what is the correct way how to get the interior vol. Cu.ft.
Is it the outside dimesnion need to be measure to get the innet vol? Or the inner dimension to get the innier vol cu.ft.?
Measure inside to get inner. Or use subbox.pro to calculate automatically
@@ATCA i used allready that. But the depth is not editable o i cant edit… i dont knw whyas the problem of the site.. but thanks the answer in order to get the cu.ft. Is the inner part of tha box.
Thanks
Great video, thanks
Check out my giveaway video. Its free. "Best 100 subwoofer"
How much did you spend on everything....a prefab box goes for about 100 so is it worth it

Do you make custom boxes for subscribers?
I do.
@@ATCA ok, good to know, I currently have a Tacoma, but my next vehicle will be a Ridgeline, so I will contact you when I do and get you dimensions for a sub box for it, thanks!!
@@sanjuanpr25 no problem
Thanks for the info
Good tutorial. Add one thing to your parts list...mask...MDF is nasty.
Welp didn't know Lowe's would pre cut boxes for you so for them to do it do you have to purchase the board from them ? I already have half of sheet of American BIRCH that I'm going to be making a box to fit in a 04 silverado single cab I'm waiting on the third quarter to see if I can get one or a pair of them new kicker solo baric L7 X's
Yes. You buy wood from them and you pay $.25 per cut. I made 8 cuts total.
that's cool but I already have a half sheet of birch & I guess I'll make a Frankenstein box for a 12 kicker subwoofer 😂 but gotta start somewhere if it's gonna be DIY how do i make a shallow single ported to where it can be sealed when not ported for the kicker 12 to fit in the 04 single cab truck
@@johngray2526 sealed and ported volumes rarely jive. Pick one or the other
Need to figure out specs on the Roku Wireless Subwoofer Pro to make a ported enclosure… would actually prefer to just use the wireless receiver component and build a completely different sub with better driver, etc 😂
