But going from a rectangle port to a round aero port it will always be less port area required. You can't compare the "air velocity" that way. Because the surface space of the aero port is smaller, the moving air is more focussed (contained in a tighter area). So whatever air it is moving will likely measure higher. The slot port is so large that the air that it moves is so much kore widely sldisbursed that it simply is not an apples to apples scomparison. For strictly measuring the quantity of air passing through the ports, you would have to use something to capture the total amount of air passing through. Like using heavy plastic shaped like the port that then came to a single/same shape (smaller really) at which loint you could measure the quantity and velocity of the air being moved. But that of course would change everything about your desired test.
Wow, I just installed two 2x4" areo ports in two different boxes (1ft³ each). And I was wondering this very question while doing it. Because the boxes are prefabed, and where sold as sloted, but where actually sealed. But I made them ported. 😂
I build a lot of boxes, and this was a great video !! I prefer Aero over slot, if you build your enclosure correctly you can even make your port adjustable on the fly. Something you can’t do with Vented. I also don’t like the “chuffing” from vented. Maybe I’m the only one that can hear it, but just not musically appealing. I’ve had some great vented boxes over the years, but just prefer aero. Subbed, great job on the boxes ….👌👏
I'm guessing by vented you mean the slot ported as slot or aero they're both vented enclosures and as for adjusting a slot ported box on the fly you just slide in a section of wood or dense foam to reduce the height of the slot to lower the Fs tuning as you've effectively made the port longer just like you might add a block of wood inside the enclosure to reduce the Vas and raise tuning for burping rather than booming, slot ported every time here and tune low to push the group delay out of harms way.
@@g7vqedave2 I am curious. I am familiar with building and tuning boxes. You mentioned tuning low enough to where group delay is minimum. I am curious as to where you personally feel that frequency is..... in your opinion.
@@drrckhamilton I'm talking about my elderly mk 1 JL 13W7 here but from memory the Fs of that speaker was 27 Hz so using Win ISD my best box, again from memory, was a 7 cu ft tuned just below the speakers Fs at about 23 Hz. This wasn't a massively loud box but compared to a box tuned to give large gain at the vehicles cabin gain frequency say between 40 and 50 Hz for burping in competition or impressing bystanders it would be many Dbs higher in the 20 to 30 Hz range ie. a street bass box. Group delay will always be present in a ported box, more so when the box is tuned for max gain, and gives the flabby response that sealed box fans avoid but tuning the ported box low and spreading that gain to produce a flat response at 20 Hz where most sealed boxes can only dream of output leaves a more modest delay in the 30 Hz area and proper rumble.
Great video, and nice boxes. But, even if the aero is "supposedly" more efficient. Isn't almost 50% less opening a bitt to much? I mean, if the point was to compare "identical " boxes?
You can't do identical port areas with an arrow versus slot port. Airports typically use 50% less area because there are circle if you had the airport the exact square inches of the slotted port it would be way too big and tuned way off. He even said in the video that he dats both of them and they both came out at the same frequency so his calculations are correct.
@terryheidmann4961 he also showed us that the aero port had almost 3x the port velocity. Not necessarily a god thing. Yes, tuning was the same. I can tune a 8" just the same. Just lengthen it. Use a 2" port and you can stil get the same tuning, at maby 6x the port velocity.
You might get different results if you put the aeroport box and the slot pox on the same side for example if your mic is on the passenger side floorboard the sub on the driver side might be loading different compared to the sub on the passenger side
Great video and great comparison!!! Very informative and very interesting in the final results!!! I still personally prefer the Aero port!!! I would assume that when it comes to listening to certain songs or certain kinds of music you could possibly notice a difference between the two types of ports!!! Is that correct to say??? In the time that i been doing Car Audio i have used a sealed box and Band pass box!!! I have never really used a slot ported box!!! I guess the best way to know is to listen to both kinds of ports in person to notice the difference between the two!!! I have just subscribed to your channel!!! I decided to give it a try since this content was very interesting to me!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks so much! Yes best thing is listening side by side real world and decide which you like better. Both can sound good. With audio there is a lot of personal preference and really not as simple as one best thing for everyone.
I believe the slot port has more low frequency output simply because it has more area. At 20hz, almost all of the output is coming from the port, so a larger port will produce more output.
How do you design for a slot port? I use Term Pro and it doesnt support slot port yet. Supposedly adding it soon (hopefully). But do you basically do a normal round port, figure out the volume it uses, then try to build a slot port with the same volume? I still think the aero ports being plastic might vibrate a bit introducing additional sound/distortion due to the plastic materials.. but not sure.
But one of the points of the video is when using a round aero port you don't go same size. They are supposed to be more efficient so you need to reduce the volume of the Aero port by 35-50% ( depending on your opinion) compared to a slot port. If you made them the same then the Aero port would be actually larger because it is more efficient.
I paused at 1:30 for a guess. The slot port is taking more volume away from the enclosure, so my guess is the aero port will be more efficient. Back to the video.
Great video and a reference for the future. Nice that even with appreciable power applied, your phone didn't distort the sound and I guess they'll ALWAYS make some noise up close other than what's in the program. Since you've done the work, here's a new hard-on for everyone - Connect them 100% in parallel (!!!) and get the best of both, keeping the ports apart with a clever divider or rotate them. (*_*) PS---I spent EVEN more time admiring the boxes' designs than absorbing the information, lol.
The only way to get the aero to fit inside the box is to go too small. Or incorporate a 90° inside the box. Now, if you go exterior aero, you can go to a 6". If you go to a 15" sub and a 6" aero, you get a better ratio.
Good video. Just for the future maybe do a slow linear tone sweep so the meter can display each frequency with the correct SPL numbers, seems weird the slot port got louder on burp frequencies but roughly the same as Aero port with the sweep all at the same volume level. However i may have missed something you said.
Looks like Aero port hits a little harder with bottle shakeage (and easier to tune of course) and will probably last longer because sub doesn't hit max excursion mechanical limits as often as it did in the slotted Port box
Bro it occurred to me may be the placement of the boxes should be the same? I mea i get they are right nex to each other but i saw a video on which placement of about where the slot box was was louder it is possible it was only placement making it louder
What you should do is swap the boxes to see which side the slot Port could have been louder because it was on the left side of the vehicle and if you have the meter on the right or the other way around
I prefer passive radiators over both. I can change the tuning easier than both as well. Sure you need a 2 to 1 to most subs to make them really perform but I don't care. They pound hard and have the characteristics of both boxes imo.
They were both tuned and verified to be same tuning but because of the slightly blather area the slot sounded like it hit the lows better but probably because more port volume.
If you are that close to frying your coils you should buy a better woofer while you can still sell the one you are currently using. That being said, if you have the ability to run a slow test signal sweep on your ported box, you can actually visually see where the port is tuned. It will be the frequency where your woofer moves the least and the port moves the most air. With a large port, sometimes it will almost make your woofer appear completely stopped with almost no excursion, but the port will be moving massive amounts of air. This is the freq where your woofer will suffer the most. Because this is also usually the freq where you get the most SPL, and it is also the freq you love because you can really crank those tunes up with that magic freq. This tuned freq is also where your impedance will be the lowest and put the most load on your amplifier and get it hot and get it to really crank out that one bass freq. All the while that voice coil is barley moving and barely getting any cool air pumped around it, and it is getting hot, then your woofer goes Poof! How do you get around that? What's the answer? Choose a smaller port, a smaller port will not control the woofer movement as much at the tuned freq and the woofer cone/voice coil can move up and down more and get the cool air moving around it to keep it cool. Make sure to round and smooth the smaller port ends to keep the chuf away. Yes you will decrease your ability to play that one magic bass freq, but your amplifier will love you for it, your voice coil will love you for it, and your box will have a better flatter response.
@@chichidouglas5078 yeah, I probably will after I heal from the surgery I just had. Can’t really build one when I can’t walk. And even when I can walk I don’t really know how to build one like this. I’d rather just buy one from my friend here if he has an extra one to sell.

Like using heavy plastic shaped like the port that then came to a single/same shape (smaller really) at which loint you could measure the quantity and velocity of the air being moved.
But that of course would change everything about your desired test.
so doesnt matter. Just choose what you like or how easy you want the build to be I do want to try a tube though.
Wow, I just installed two 2x4" areo ports in two different boxes (1ft³ each). And I was wondering this very question while doing it. Because the boxes are prefabed, and where sold as sloted, but where actually sealed. But I made them ported. 😂
Try the test with equal port volume. Also the slot port test was 1hz higher in each test
I did that in the “ part 2” video check it out.
what kind of wood did you use on these boxes and where did you get it?
Birch Home Depot
I build a lot of boxes, and this was a great video !! I prefer Aero over slot, if you build your enclosure correctly you can even make your port adjustable on the fly. Something you can’t do with Vented. I also don’t like the “chuffing” from vented. Maybe I’m the only one that can hear it, but just not musically appealing. I’ve had some great vented boxes over the years, but just prefer aero. Subbed, great job on the boxes ….👌👏
Agreed. I like the smoothness of the bass the aero produces over the choppy slot port.

I am curious.
7 cu 😮
I like aeroports better, they sound better to me. A 6 inch aero might have been more closer in Port area
considering our human hearing range, lower volume is more important so the Aero wins hands down for me
So where is the best for the bass ?
Dude that's awesome! What nice boxes, great tests! Very Very cool
Thanks for watching
Most home theater sub have aero port ..is the SQ better with vs slot port having higher spl
Great video, and nice boxes.
But, even if the aero is "supposedly" more efficient. Isn't almost 50% less opening a bitt to much? I mean, if the point was to compare "identical " boxes?
Marketing hype and its victims...
Without identical port area this test is highly flawed.
Sure slot port boxes are loud, if you love the sound of port noise. The older I get, the more I like the sound quality over SPL.
hi... subwoofer rms??? port aero inch??
You might get different results if you put the aeroport box and the slot pox on the same side for example if your mic is on the passenger side floorboard the sub on the driver side might be loading different compared to the sub on the passenger side
I did try that, and it didn’t change anything much so that’s why I didn’t switch when I did the video. Also SPL meter was center windshield.
Which one gives more low and clean bass?
Both can if the box and port are designed correctly.
super cool comparison bro turned out cool 😊😊😊
Glad you liked it!!
I believe the slot port has more low frequency output simply because it has more area. At 20hz, almost all of the output is coming from the port, so a larger port will produce more output.
Great video!! Satisfied my curiosity
What app is that I'd like to meter mine
It’s the SSA. SPL meter it’s around $400.
I don't fully understand boxes yet. But I was running 2 12s in a custom box with a slotted port 5 inches wide by 12 inches in height
Would be nice if the ports were the same size.
Yea I understand. Great video 👍
I paused at 1:30 for a guess. The slot port is taking more volume away from the enclosure, so my guess is the aero port will be more efficient. Back to the video.
I was wrong. 😊
Which is better for long throw sound
Both good it just depends on port size, subwoofer, etc… I prefer slot ports myself.
@@HiFiVector thanks bro ,i will choose slot ports now. I trust your choice🙇♂️
Which is better for deep bass and reverb?
Honestly both are good a lot of it is just how the box is built.
Slot port has been winning the bass comps in my city. 160.99 last run. Next best was 158.7
The only way to get the aero to fit inside the box is to go too small. Or incorporate a 90° inside the box. Now, if you go exterior aero, you can go to a 6". If you go to a 15" sub and a 6" aero, you get a better ratio.
What if you put more areo ports? like two insted of one.
Thanks. I have a question. I have 2 12" Rockford Fosgate P3s and 1 12" P2. Would it be possible to run all e in the same box slot port box?
You can but mismatched sub’s sharing the same enclosure airspace is not ideal.
@@HiFiVector thanks
Ill make a separate box for the P2. Appreciate the answer and not just telling me to google it
Hey man those boxes are beautiful. Do u mind sharing the stain brand and color?
Did u check the impedance difference in the 2 designs by chance ?
I did not
Very beautiful enclosures. Look like they belong inside the house.
What is the xmax on these subs they sure seem to be flexing
25mm one way
hey mate, have you done 4th order band pass comparison?
No I haven’t
@@HiFiVector probably not worth it ,Just playing around with vent and 4th band on Winisd ,vent is loader and go lower
How much should one of these cost
On the slot port calculate Air volume Then calculate the same air volume on aeroport.the Could be 6round 18long
Idk..But to me...They should be in the same spot to do a really good test..Like have both on driver side etc..But awesome job..But slot port for me...
How amps are you running on your alternator.
400 amp alternator
I prefer passive radiators over both. I can change the tuning easier than both as well. Sure you need a 2 to 1 to most subs to make them really perform but I don't care. They pound hard and have the characteristics of both boxes imo.
Can you test out MTX9500 12" and Orion HCCA 12"
but which one sounded lower?
They were both tuned and verified to be same tuning but because of the slightly blather area the slot sounded like it hit the lows better but probably because more port volume.
You should do a thermal on the voice coil. Cause personally I want the one that keeps me from frying my coils
Dude what size speaker are thoughs
12”
I've got both slot Port and aero Port boxes
Which one you think is better
How can I purchase one of the box...
I’m sorry I only make custom boxes for myself and I don’t sell to the public.
You need to redo the test with same port area on both as well
Check the part 2 video
I like those boxes man. You definitely did a good job with those. I wish I had one for my show...
Thanks 👍
Then go build one, and you'll have one
@@chichidouglas5078 yeah, I probably will after I heal from the surgery I just had. Can’t really build one when I can’t walk. And even when I can walk I don’t really know how to build one like this. I’d rather just buy one from my friend here if he has an extra one to sell.
I would like to see the same test with only one box in the car at the same time, I noticed that you never showed both subs to see how much the other sub moved from the pressure of the powered one canceling out certain frequencies.
