To raise cash he had to sell one of his Ferraris to a friend of his in LA. And yes, the sharks do get paid for being on the show. It’s something like $30-$50,000 per episode.
Everyone saying Robert made a great offer, he didn’t. Offering 500k for 20% is a lot of equity, and they don’t need the cash. Only giving up 10% is much better even with less money since it will be worth far more in the future
They chose Mark despite Robert's generous offer because he is passionate about not having student debts, which is the very heart of the reason why they started the business in the first place.
Well that and it’s the same valuation. So even if you take out the people same valuation and also they probably didn’t want to give up that much equity or they probably would’ve countered with mark would you do a deal with Robert 250 each at the 10% for 20% total.
Robert said Mark cut their evaluation by half...but so did he offering 500K for 20%. I was surprised they didnt counter with 500K for 20% for both Mark and Robert.
Sucks for Robert but 20% still takes away a lot of their equity. Also Mark actually explained what he would do to help them out, which is make connections to the universities. Roberts offer was nice, but throwing more money at them without offering any strategic help isn't necessarily their best option

Such a tenuous connection about paying off college debt. I’m sure “get a job moving boxes” (whilst I support it myself) isn’t quite the wet dream that college students are thinking of when they want their debt to disappear.
