  • The subscapularis muscle is one of the four rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder. What makes this muscle unique from all the others, this muscle sits underneath the scapula over the rib cage and commonly adhesives (sticks likes glue) limiting range of motion and normal function. The end result is inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain in the neck and/or shoulder.

Omg, about 3.5 months ago I fell and severely injured my r shoulder. In addition, it hasn’t helped that I’ve had a stiff neck for nearly 2 yrs.
today I finally went to the chiropractor, but I forgot what he told me to do to help strengthen the muscles and then found you.
Thank you for giving me some relief.

Will add this to my routine today. It's only 6:10 a.m. and I've done the penguin 3 times. BOTH my shoulders are smiling in the warmth. Thanks!!!

I had surgery nearly 4 years ago for a torn labrum on posterior side of my shoulder. I can't believe neither of my 2 PT's never suggested this exercise for me. I felt relief after doing this exercise the first time. I've slept better than I have since having the surgery. I have a long way to go, but this is a positive start.

Bless you. You've changed my life, my diagnosis. I've watched lots od your films and finally I understood that my symptoms were from shoulders not from the neck as doctors said. I've had more tests just because I was firm and brave after your clips to tell doctors they were wrong. I hope I'm on my way to improvement after 10 months of pain and sleepless nights. Thank you doctor. I'm from Poland where problems like mine aren't treated properly, especially when you live in a small town. Once again bless you. You really really saved me.

Thanks, for this exercise.. My shoulder feels locked underneath the shoulder blade by the rib cage.. It feels frozen all the time and my neck all the ways down to this part is stiff.. This actually effects my eye and goes down through the neck and under the shoulder blade.. I keep doing shoulder exercises but it never seems to improve much.. Here's the thing, I can move my right shoulder with no problems but it still feels locked and frozen if this makes any sense.. My neck on the right side is very stiff but the coldness seems to be around my shoulder blade bone area..

Hello Dr.Mandell.I want to ask you something.Several months ago is discovered to me a problem with the cervical vertebrae. Before that problem,I have lift the weight,I have worked with the small weights, because I am not a professional.I had pain in the neck,I take some painkillers, and now Im feel much better.I wanted to ask you if I can to do exercises with light weights to strengthen that part of the body(traps, shoulders, deltoids, etc).I'm afraid I do not worsen my own situation, but I think that working with light weights will not worsen my condition.According to the doctors I should not continue to work with heavy weights.Advanced grateful for your answer.

Wow! Just one exercise of penguin and the broom stretch did relieve my pain a bit. I also had a question that due to pain on my scapula, neck and shoulders i also have zapping pain on my arm parallel to my elbow and I thought it might be due to inflamation of all the soreness and excrutiating pains that I have had for a long time without any relief I guess the pain travelled to my ulnar nerve? Do you think that is a possibility? Or it is something different. I had aneyrsm clipping 10 years ago so not sure if its the cause of zapping due to that. Anyway! thank you and would love to hear your suggestions if any!

Hi Doctor Mandell … something I did in the gym caused my subscapularis immobility and impingement back about three months ago … the most significant sign of my problem is exhibited by the Lift Away test… with my unaffected left arm I have no problem placing my left arm behind my back and raising it up and away but since this exercise in the gym damage … I barely can place my right hand on my back without the pain of restriction. I am hoping this exercise will help work my way out of it. I am considering going to see an Orthopedic doctor in any event. Any advice?

Hello, I can’t find any videos online that tells you what exercises to do to fix this. I understand you can do active release and stretches, but shouldn’t you work the antagonist muscles to actually fix the issue? I would assume cable pull a parts or banded external cable rotations. Thoughts? How come no one mentions this?

hey doc! just wondering, is this a stretch that I should feel instantly or should it take a few seconds to feel. I notice on each side it might take anywhere between 5-10 seconds to start feeling a stretch in the armpit region. Also on both sides especially my left, if I push down a little too far I tend to feel a pain or something pushing through the lat area. Is this normal or a tightness I should address elsewhere? Usually after I hold this stretch for about twenty seconds on my left side I'll feel a brief pain in my lat region for about 20 seconds. Thank you.

Hello, I'm having problems with my shoulders, they start to burn while I'm brushing my teeth or talking on a phone, while doing handstands or when I lift my arm I feel like something is blocking it and making it harder, like it's taking strength away. I'm 17 years old and I've been to so many therapies and none worked, last time I went on a therapy and the therapist was working on my subscapularis but it didn't feel much better the next day and I really don't know what to do anymore. I stopped straining 4 months ago because of this and I don't want to give up, it would mean a world to me if you know what's going on and let me know :)

I have a positve apley's test on left side. This video has been very insightful. Also does this help with myofascial release? Not even sure what that refers to, but heard you mention sticks like glue to rib cage. Thank you.
