  • How to Fix a Pinched Nerve in the Neck | Dr. Jon Saunders, Newmarket Chiropractor
A pinched nerve in the neck, or cervical radiculopathy, can be very painful and debilitating. In this video, Dr. Jon Saunders will show you how to get rid of pinched nerve in your neck at home. There will be 6 stretches shown to help give you some relief. The first 3 will be more general and focus on decompression or traction of your neck and the next 3 will be more specific to select nerve roots, using nerve flossing techniques.

The main causes of a pinched nerve in the neck are a disc bulge or herniation, degenerative disc disease, bones spurs (osteophytes), and tight neck muscles. Poor postural patterns like forward head posture or a loss of normal curve in the neck can also contribute to a pinched nerve in the neck. It happens most often in your 40's and usually only involves one arm. Signs and symptoms are pain/tingling/numbness in the neck, arm, hand, between shoulder blades and sometimes headaches. Numbness and tingling and hand and arm weakness can also occur.
Improvement usually takes between 4-6 months, but in some cases much longer, up to 24+ months. The good news, most will recover without needing surgery.
Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions or which of my 6 stretches for a pinched neck nerve worked best fro you.

Are you taking B complex dietary vitamins to help those nerves with their myelin regeneration? If not you ought to. The dosage should be high per each vit.

I was diagnosed with cervical nerve pinching. I was doing decompression and tens treatment with a chiropractor who was too expensive to continue treatment. I have found some of your exercises to be quite beneficial.
I have extreme tingling/pins and needles down both arms to my hands. Sleeping is very uncomfortable and painful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just came here to say thank you! I’ve been doing these for a week and I’ve seen so much improvement. I’ve been going to physical therapy, gotten shots, and tried so much. Came across your video and it’s working so well. Really appreciate you putting this out!
Any recommendations on how to sleep best? Find myself stiff in the morning and waking up due to nerve pain.

Been watching, bookmarking a dozen pinched nerve stretch videos, and this one is my favorite to rewatch, find it useful, helpful, educational, super comforting, and think I now have a YT-crush on Dr. Jon- sorry you're adorable and we should have dinner haha. Traction with towel was helping give me some relief (too painful pulling with my own hands). I've started doing daily warm bath with 1.25cup epsom salts and allowing my head to completely free float (bob) in the water with its full weight for awhile which does hurt, but along with thumb-massaging my neck muscles in the warm water, it seems to be helping reduce the intensity of the nerve pain and rolling it back out of my arm and back into the shoulder/localized spot. I haven't seen a single video mention Epson Salts bath neck massage, so check it out and if it does help after 3x, let the chat know. If widely useful, may be something the good Dr. would mention in another pinched nerve advice video for 'right now' relief. until we can unchain from our desk jobs, good luck, be well. (That reminds me, Dr, a video suggestion would be, once repaired for the nth time, what daily or weekly maintenance stretch/moves keep the pinched nerve at bay? Should we incorporate something religiously to self protect? ty!)

I've recently discovered your channel and I love your simple way teaching! I am currently doing your neck exercises and hope to see results soon. But for about a year I've had pain from my shoulder down thru my tricep (?). I've been to a chiropractor but no help. I do not have pain all the time, just when I move my arm a certain way - and putting my arm at a 90* angle is makes pain radiate in my arm! So I am wondering if that is showing the area or nerve that I need to work on. I can do it if I modify it and pull my chin in. Do you think that the fact that the 90* position triggers the pain is identifying the problematic nerve? Thank you

After years of pain and trying different treatments the specific nerve flossing techniques here gave me almost instant relief, although it isn't continuous. Thank you for sharing these and I'd like to know the recommendation and prognosis if the nerve flossing technique helps so what else should I focus on to eliminate the pain entirely?

I have just tried all six exs. The last one was too painful. So I will rest from this one until I can do it without pain. I could feel the other exercises releasing tension and pain down my spine, into my lumbar spine on the opposite side and releasing tension from my buttock on the same side as the neck pain. Thank you so much for giving me these useful tools.
