I tried this on the practice range today and I cannot believe how well this works. I tried it out of divot holes, dirt and bare lies and it worked every time. This is the best golf tip I have ever had and I have played for 41 years.
Thank you! Huge fan of your videos. You wouldn't happen to be in Florida would you? I'd love a lesson
Mr. Short Game will literally lay down in the dirt to help your golf game. He's a real one.
Some of the best, honest, down to earth advice. Awesome videos! 👍
Just picked up on this nugget , probably the best instructional video I‘v watched on the subject.. Went straight out into the yard, found some dirt and wow!! Always struggled hitting chip shots out of hard pack.... Thanks Matt
Usual solid advice. Nice simple technique. In my youth, I worked on a farm in part in exchange for tips from a former All American who trained with Dr. Cary Middlecoff as a junior. Bounce was not a thing much back then, other than for sand specialty clubs like the Hogan Sure Out, which I carried for some years. Also later carried a Sarazen R-20 at times. Wedges just weren't a thing. He taught me to hit pitch shots that were going to run out with a shut face to give them a bit of hook spin so they would run truer. I'm sure over half my chips were with a 7 iron, but anything from 6-P might be used. Now, it's all about using bounce.
I tried this out on the course this weekend and it works! I then went over to the practice area and holed out multiple times from the crappiest lies....thanks for the tip!
Used these tips today. Before my round I went to the chipping area and only practiced bad/hard ground lies. Shot my best round ever. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this. Most of the golfing videos on RUclips show guys hitting off of perfect fairways and sand traps that look like they're filled with sugar. The courses I play on aren't like that. However, hitting off of really sparse ground like in this video - sometimes barre dirt is one thing. What I find more frequently is areas that are 90% grass, but with small spaces between the tufts of grass that the ball always seems to settle into because they are lower than the grass. It's almost like hitting out of divots all the time. I would love for you to do a video of how to dig the ball out of depressions with grass all around them.
First off really good video! My biggest challenge comes from hitting off of bare lies around the green that are firm but also wet from watering - you can dig in very easily, but I will try these steps, should help from that type of situation. The other one that kills me is 10 yards off the green in front of the green apron or mouth and it’s super soft and moist turf - so easy to dig in, I end up laying the sod over the ball and hitting it about 2 yards! One of the most frustrating experiences in golf.
This is so counter-intuitive....no wonder it works!! My local muni has tons of hard pan just off the green. I can't tell you have many Up and Downs have turned into skulled and fat shots...turning pars and bogeys into doubles. Thank you!!!
This is a great short game tip. Occasionally I go back and forth from a shut to open face and whenever I play the face of my club shut has always been a proven winner. Thanks for putting this up.
That was very simple and easy to understand, now I just gotta go do it, thank u!!
Love this tip. I've used this technique and works everytime!!!!
Thanks, glad it's working for you.
I can’t believe you have that man 60 degree wedges! Wow! Good stuff Matt. Your always fun to watch!!!!!
Dude, you're a great teacher. Well done, love you work
You've come a long way baby!! Good job.
If I have that lie and I’m within 50 yards, I’m putting
I’ve had the chance to play a bit more golf this season, and I’ve come to realize my short game ruins my scores. I’m ok tee to green...or should I say tee to next to the green. Lol. But then taking an extra shot or two to get a makable putt for me kills me every time. I’ve been practicing your chipping techniques in my back yard and starting to get the hang of them. Until now I’ve been afraid of my 54 and 60 wedges. Had no idea how to hit them. Can’t wait to see if they translate to the course. Thank you for doing what you do and you always keep them entertaining to boot.
Great tip because I was always wanting to open the club face and I was getting a lot of chunked shots that would just run across the green or even worse wouldn’t even come close to the green. I literally did this for 5 minutes and every shot was the way you said it should be 👍👍👍
Great advice! Thanks for the clear instruction.
Great tip. It works. I love these videos. You are everyman. Thanks. :)
My foot wedge in this situation has very little bounce.. Just sayin;)
😂😂😂
That's what I thought too but at the course I play I asked at the pro shop and their rule for any non grassy patches on the fairway was "free relief." I'm assuming it was too let the grass grow back.
Thanks for doing this. I'd love to see one where the pack was much harder, like cement. We have a drought now and there seems to be a lot of that hard hard dirt. Love your channel
That makes perfect sense, Matt. And I wonder whether there is a clear advantage to a high bounce anyway. All my wedges have a minimum bounce, and there isn’t a shot that doesn’t go well with them. While there are several shots that do not go well with a high-bounce wedge. Another example is a shot from hard bunker sand.
Thanks again for all your work.
Your tips are really helpful, thanks a lot
Great tip...you are awesome in explaining...thanks
thanks so much for this video! my 54 wedge had been my "go to" wedge for chipping in most situations (i'm now starting to use all clubs, depending on the landing spot), but i didn't really understand what it meant that it was also the one with the highest bounce.. and i was wondering why i duffed so many shots on a specific course that has hard ground.. it all makes sense now.. the high bounce lifts the clubhead a bit back up when i hit the hard ground, which then causes me to either hit the ball with the lowest grooves or even the front of the sole and it goes flying over the green..
Extraordinary never thought of shutting the face can't wait to try it thank you
Now I know why my low bounce Clevelands out perform my higher bounce wedges from these lies. Thanks!
Great tip, many thanks!
Great tip for one of the hardest shots in golf 😀👍
Another great program my friend. Be well.
I will surely try that. Great tip!
I love the hen behind. Love your channel 👏👏👏
Thanks Matt great help 👍
Great tip, thanks
do you ever think to your self, i have mastered what most will never come close, you the man!!!
Good advice. Best regards from London.
Wow this is advice which I needed. I have been doing the opposite for decades on my home course which has lots of these lies about the greens. Course closed tomorrow for queen Elizabeth 11 funeral posting from Glasgow Scotland. Will be at course first thing Tuesday
Great vid, thanks
Thanks!!
Loving the video's!
I tried today on dirt cart path. Worked like champ. Muchos gracias
Awesome glad it's working for you.
Nice one, thanks
Let met tell you what made me Subscribe a moment ago. 52 Seconds into your video you show multiple 60 Degree clubs with different grinds and bounce. I knew then you knew what you were talking about.. Great video. SUBSCRIBED..
Mr short game, you offer advice without brainwashing and confusing - nice job
well done matt...another great video!...
Thanks, I appreciate your support.
Awesome man, thanks
Love all that. I also get the toe down to have as little club turf interaction
Helpful!
Thanks. Nice video. I have a 60 degree with 8 degree bounce. Is that bounce ok?
Thanks for the video. This is how the courses are in Charlotte. The lies and the grounds are super hard. I will try the less bounce, but It appears you are hitting the ball at the same time you hit the ground. That seems to be the best way to chip in Charlotte or just putt it as long as there are no sand traps in front of you. What do you think about putting from off the greens and how far off the green is to much for the putter? Thanks again.
I hope I get a bad lie this Saturday to try this out. Great video by the way
This is my biggest weakness in my game. Ball is in a hole between grass and on some dirt. I was doing everything completely wrong. Excited to try this.
Great tip👍
This works good for Florida courses, not a lot of grass around the greens ans a lot of hard surfaces to deal with.
Very good video !!!
👍🏻I've always done the opposite. Great tip.
Totally makes sense. Only change setup, same swing.
Thanks, I hope it helps your game
Never really understood meaning of bounce - many thanks
What wedges should a 12 handicapper use?
Matt thanks for the tips of hitting from a crappy lie... cant wait to apply this in my short game... peace my friend get your yard repaired 😂
Do I see crowd funding turf in the future? Love the videos!
Just saw this pop up, Matt. Any advice on a really wet course..you know for those courses that get swamped? In MA this season (2nd year in the golf league) the course is super wet and my normal 40yrd and in is as consistent as its been, but for the wet turf. The club sinks in further and I duffed 3 yesterday and couldn't figure out how to fix it. Thank you!
Nice some slider/dolly shots!
Another great point is to find the bottom of your swing path. Very important. Set club on ground, take a couple practice strokes and hit down through the ball.
4:05 chickens in the background lol. thanks for the useful tips
I have a 50 degree with 4 degrees of bounce that I always use in these situations. Never knew why until now. I actually was trying to force myself to use more bounce because that’s what I thought you were supposed to do. Looks like I had it right all along.
You Da Best
I will try this tomorrow.. I always have these..hard pack chips
Matt, how do you chipp & pitch on rough of thick grass (root grass) not seed grass?
New to your videos but love them so far, keep up the awesome work. Do you have a video on chipping from wet ground at all? Would love to see that
That intro where you threw the ball down is what my local course looks like around every green
Can I still use this if I have a bunker between me and the green?
hope u see this? had 2 hard WET lies last week and did this but club dug in mud, help? love your vids! living here in AZ Im an expert hard sand player BUT now some courses are filling them up and i cant get out of these ultra fluffy/soft bunkers, help??? All my wedges ar 10*, maybe I need 50-10, 54-14, 58-6 to have right tools depending on lies? THX!
Loved the video and tried it this morning. Brill. Bye the way you selling them chicken’s 😊
does the apply to a lob? your fun to watch and you should have a t.v. show thanks for every video you do!
Mr.SG. Yesterday I skulled a wedge about 5-7 yrds over the green but it was lying on hardpan, 6 feet below the green. I had to get it up high but also hit it a short distance. How do I do that? This situation has happened to me before with the ball 8ft or so below the green and my ball only 10yrds or so away from the green. I kept skulling the balls back and forth.
Hi I tried. This method still struggled but then I done the same method but made sure my right hand moved faster and it worked, would this be the reason?
Will this work from a bunker with hard packed wet sand? This shot requires getting the ball up to clear the edge of the bunker and go at least 5-10 more yards in the air.
Gavin Craig it probably would but you would wanna hit it harder obviously and more like a pitch shot with a higher lofted club
Thanks for the video! Short game can’t be stressed enough! However I can’t afford 10 different bounce wedges 😎
No worries just try to have a different bounce on your 4 wedges and you should have what you need for every shot.
Just sell your car!
MrShortGame Thanks! I learn a lot from you, so thank for your time doing these videos!
what about those kind of uneven lies when the ground is kinda muddy and soft but notes soft high bounce technique. i'm struggling with these uneven early spring in kentucky lies at muni courses- id rather be pitching out of 4.5" bluegrass. kinda like no grass under trees with acorns and nu[t shells.
"How to chip at Texas munis" is what this video should be called.
As the ball is on a hardpan, it has no front resistance and thus will readily move upon contact, much like if it were resting upon ice. Thus, you must impact the ball with a steeper downward blow such that the ball is momentarily trapped between the club head and ground. This provides the needed front resistance, allowing the club face time to interface with the ball.
Lots of tight lies around my club. Try this, Using the same stance and ball position, lift the club heel half an inch and strike the ball toward the toe. If your hand are ahead of the ball, it comes out low with spin. If your hards are even with the ball less roll and more hight.
For sure hand position makes a big difference. The more you practice the more options you will have.
Great info
Is that a chicken coop in the back ground ( red ) if do you like it and what kind
Got that one from a friend. It's ok and we keep our your hens in there until the others accept them.
I always carry an arrangement of 60 degree wedges with me at all times and a package of watermelon seeds to plant in the divot row I created.. ..lol
First Comment YAY I love your videos!
Great job.
thx
Matt, do you ever play Mini Tour events? Great Videos. Thank you.
\
Not much but I'm hoping to do more in the future. No matter how you play those events really help you improve.
MrShortGame We have some great courses here in N.Cal in the East Bay, that’s a great idea. I’d definitely attend. Love Matt’s teaching style.
Only want to get it up high is the toe down method. Thump the ground with a toe down cut swing.
Ok I’ll let you know in April
that is my golf course.
2 questions for anyone who can help a under achieving chipper , 1 that shot seems to be a relatively long chip shot in the air of 30 feet or whatever so it seems it would require alot of green to work with which i am sort of ok but it is the much shorter chip shots that i need help with so if anyone has seen any good videos i would appreciate it thanks and 2 i believe he said rotate the club and i do see the toe turning over which creates lower ball flight , but is that standard for chipping and doesnt it make the ball run out lower and farther ?
yes the ball will come out lower and run on but out of bad lie it is very hard to get under the ball
It would surely be illegal to carry 5 60deg wedges with different bounces as you are allowed to carry 14 clubs max. I use a 54deg sand wedge with medium bounce. How can you maneuverer same club to change effective bounce to handle these situations?
Like the clothes dude, whats the website and style name of the threads? Great tip as per usual..PGA!!!
Travis Mathew gear
You looked like Gilbert Godfried when you were on the ground. LOL
West Virginia fairways.
辛苦辛苦了!爬下去!🙏
👍👍👍
Dig your videos! Miss the intros with “let’s do it”
I play sand greens in the desert. What’s that green stuff
