- How to Chip or Pitch it close from the Rough - (Some) Secrets Revealed!
If you've ever struggled to get consistent results from the rough around the greens this video might well explain why. You can't approach every lie in the rough the same way and expect a great outcome, how you adjust depending on the lie is EVERYTHING when it comes to hitting the ball close.
In this video James explains what you might expect to see and gives you a method to deal with almost anything.

Another great video
Thanks David
toe is perfect around the green.I stress also the importance of the speed when the club head is open.If the ball lies on top of the grass, with the club head open and with a very fast swing, you go under the ball and it will hardly move
Really struggling with this lately, freshly cut, very coarse rough round the green. Either fat it or thin it. 😢
... have a scan through JR's videos, there's a nice one in there featuring a stock runner but using different clubs for a variety of distances.
Best short game content on RUclips - thanks
Thanks Mike!
Very useful content. Great pacing and tone which builds confidence in the viewer.
One suggestion for bunker shot video is for bad lies caused by foot prints, stances and strike trenches left by the group ahead. In some cases the ball can be 3 or 4 inches below the natural bunker level and up against a vertical wall. We see a lot of videos on fairway divots but I have not seen one on this topic but it occurs frequently and can destroy a good round. If you could provide some hints on suggested approaches that would be great.
Good stuff. What are the shot choices when the pin the close in these scenarios?
I have a question for you: at impact I struggle to get the shaft really vertical. Seems impossible to not have a little shaft lean. Any tips?
... James's Coach Lockey lesson videos may be of help ... they discuss body rotation and tilt, which (I'm guessing here as I've not seen you in action) could possibly negate excessive arm movement in your chipping / encourage greater use of the body, which will give you a more reliable action (fewer variables on a basic chip)
Could do with help with 20-40 yard dead hard fairways with little grass. Need an on line runner. Thanks for instruction. Really enjoying and using advice.
Happy to have revisited this one. Wasn't far enough along on my quest to fully appreciate this one three months ago. A *lot* packed into this one. Soft arms. Me likey.
Wish my club had rough that lush. The courses I play will often have some patches of dead grass around the green, or even just bare Earth. How to play out of that?
Lower lofted wedge or short iron with less bounce
What club is he using
60
Loving your videos. Only question is why you aim left with the second option as opposed to the bunker option when you are opening face with both options??
Thanks. The bunker type shot I lowered the shaft while opening the face, means it doesn't actually point right. Toe down it points right hence the little left aim.
Brilliant video. Thanks James. Although slightly disappointed it came in at just under 12 minutes. 12.04-12.07 is definitely the sweet spot..
Haha I'll do better next time Rob!

What can I say. The green got the better of me.
James what are you using for the handheld phone mount ?
It’s a gimbal from Zhiyun. Bought from best buy a few years ago, definitely been replaced by better versions now. Can’t fault this one though!

🙈🙉🙊
what the heck is with that green? looks like a golfers nightmare.
The greens are brutal at Rockrimmon, great course though!
