Me, a 24 handicap: Ah, yes, proper bounce would totally improve my game :D
The real reason to choose different bounces depends on the decent angle of the club into the ball. If you’re a steep swinger you need more bounce, if you are shallow you need less. Bounce also can be changed depending on ground conditions, but since amateur golfers aren’t going to change wedge bounce for different courses, the most important thing is what type of swing you have. THAT is what you need to worry about with bounce, not the loft of the ball.
Geez…I think I came here for this, thanks. I’m in the process of picking my first wedges.
This video Did not explain it well enough....Bounce very important for softer or harder ground conditions.... wet day compare to dry day on tight lie big difference... softer sand hard sand... bounce plays a huge part...I play a mid bounce for my gap... high bounce for sand wedge ... use it for soft sand, wet soft morning shots around the green... and I use a low bounce on my lob wedge to open up face and wedge edge will sit lower to ground allowing me to slide under ball with least resistance from the ground... shot delivery comes into play but the bounce will help u a lot
Thanks, that is just what I was hoping to get from the video.
we need more of mrs shortgame
I find it funny that I had no idea that the Wilson Staff 60° wedge I have been using for 2 years has 0° bounce which I haven't seen on any other club, no wonder I suck with it haha
Dang, Mrs. Short game with the skills!
What a nice surprise, Mrs. Shortgame!
Wouldn't hitting off actual grass (and are the conditions are hard/soft) be a better indicator of what bounce is best for you based on your divot? Off synthetic turf the results seem to be all the same.
Those mats are very close to the real thing. But yes reality would be the best.
so, you're going to determine the bonce you need of a hard piece of astro turf lol, so you need to slow down and give a breakdown of which bounce gave you the closet to the pin and how it affected your back spin.
Thank you, i need this information 😊
So... a 6 minute video with the headline of "what bounce is right for you" ends with watching him hit... and then him saying "bounce does make a difference so come into Precision Golf Centers."
That's 6 minutes of my life I'm never getting back.
Yeah, I don't know why I came here.
yeah, this was a terrible video explaining nothing...
you should do a video with the different grinds
I was a bit disappointed that you didnt get into why low bounce is good for certain conditions and higher bounce for others. Take really dry & hard conditions...Do I want 12 deg of bounce or 4?
It depends on the golfer, but in theory...low bounce for hard surface, high bounce for soft surface.
I personally like high bounce wedges because I like to thump my wedges.
Another aspect is the face angle. Players who typically hit open face shots wouldn't need a high bounce, since the open face adds bounce area. I hit with a square face, so the extra bounce really helps me from digging in.
Lastly, look at how you hit your wedge shots, if you chunk your wedges (leave swimming pool sized holes) then higher bounce helps to float the wedge, whereas if you fluff the grass, then a lower bounce wedge would allow you to hit the ball and let the club sit lower to the ball upon contact.
Some guys carry low and high bounce wedges for different lengths as well. Low bounce for longer shots, and higher bounce for short shots.
Could you do this video outside in turf with a launch monitor!
Turf conditions dictate what bounce I use.
Oh fuc yea
From what I’ve gathered over the years there isn’t really the perfect bounce because especially where I live course conditions can change drastically throughout the season from soft and
Wet to rock hard. My advice is to try and test clubs off of actual turf if you can testing them off of a mat doesn’t really give you that digit feedback you need with a wedge you can get away with miss hits on mats. I’ve found out I have to keep a couple different bounce wedges around a higher bounce for soft and wet conditions and a lower bounce for firmer conditions technically speaking a bigger bounce and sole will make it more forgiving but it also takes away versatility testing off a Mat just doesn’t do it for me with irons either really.
Great shots. Have watched almost every video. So consistent.
genuine bounce only works when hitting from turf...you should have been doing this on the course to a pin...
Generally correct statement here, but better players can see a big difference on a mat as well.
Me personally, I prefer to see real results shooting into a green for just about anything.
More Mrs. Shortgame! 😀⛳💪🏌️
The consensus in the comments is that the data presented here is negligible without considering the various conditions that we actually use wedges with certain bounces for. I agree.
If you haven’t done it already, it would be great if you did, the same kind of video with wedges and their various bounces and grinds around the green to see how they perform
Mr Short Game- can you do a video on difference between K grind (14) and D (grind)? Is D that much more versatile? Is K that much better in the bunker? Thanks!
I would love to see a video with different grinds compared as well👍👍
If you are still listening Mr SG, the different grinds are still a big mystery to me and probably others.
You did a good job explained how the ball reacts to different bounce but nothing on turf interaction or steepness of your specific swing.
Personally, I play on fairways that are not mown real tight and I don’t have a real shallow swing angle so I do prefer more bounce. On real tight fairways I would have to reconsider. If you like to open up your wedges around the greens you may want less. A lot more goes into the proper wedge bounce but your Vedic is a good start to knowledge but mor is needed to decide.
The issue I have is from 20 yards in, those delicate chips……which is best for those shots
Matt, at the course, when do you want the higher bounce? And how many wedges are ideal in a bag? I have P,G,54,60 that I carry. What would be good for mid handicapper? thx.
What’s the loft of your gap wedge? Mine is 48 degrees for gap wedge and then I have a 52, 56, 60. Favorite out of those is the 56 callaway CB Mack daddy has 14 bounce on it it’s so easy to hit.
You should probably carry 14 wedges.
@mrshortgame Where did you get that mat at the end of the video, coupon codes? I am in the military and getting ready to go on deployment, want something like that to bring with. Any other ideas for training aids while not able to actually hit the range? Also, love the video, keep them up!
Why is bounce stamped on each wedge?
So who makes a WIDE sole with lots of bounce ??
I wanna see the difference in the short game, flop shots bunker shots low/high pitches etc
I generally play better with more bounce regardless of lie. I'm currently waiting on the high bounce MG2 wedges to come out!!!
Where they all the same grind and if si what grind?
they dont call you mr short game for nothing, very consistent shots.
You just cant fit the bounce off the full swing thats what a pro said a lot of amateurs do that you got to fit it off of the chipping flop shots pitchs.
Agreed that's why I usually recommend having different bounces and grinds for each wedge. But if trying to get gapping perfect you might just need to adjust bounce not loft.
Need chipping and pitching video with the same clubs.
Bounce is all to do with what lies you’re presented with on a golf course.
A lower bounce will allow you to nip the ball off tight surfaces when chipping etc and higher bounce will allow you to get under the ball more when on a fluffier lie , out of sand or in thicker grass.
Sorry to say, but I think novice golfers might be a little unsure of the exact definition of bounce. I think it is the sole of the club's angle, but not completely sure. Perhaps this item might be informational to us twice a year golfers.
Many thanks for your patience.
Starter " so you are a group of 8?"
Me, "nah man, they are just here to tote all my clubs"
I got a 60 degree with 60 bounce, this good?
Lmfao!!! You trying to hit from the water?
So you got a backhoe in your bag?
Do a video on hitting fairway woods off the deck please
You got it.
Judging bounce off matts.😂😂😂
I just took a lesson from this guy who said nobody should be using anything other than a 4 degree...says the main purpose of high bounce is your crappy shot will be less crappy so you should just learn how to hit correctly.
I would never take lessons from this person again, it is just completely wrong.
Just buy all of them and place them in your bag based on the course you know you'll be playing.
You haven't just changed the bounce, but also the grind, as all of these clubs have different amounts and locations of sole relief. If you took that 60-14M out on firm turf you would have less success than you do off the artificial turf in the studio. Just sayin' that there is more to it than just the bounce.
Any video on bounce filmed indoors, with shots hit from a mat into a screen, is a poor experiment. Bounce and wedge grind are designed for real turf interaction and compatibility with swing types and angle of attacks of individual golfers (shallow, neutral, steep). Neither does this work with just one golfer hitting the shots - his swing characteristics will perform better with a specific wedge - because of all of the above.
You made no mention of turf interaction, tight lie, rough and etc. Hitting of a matt doesn't really prove anything.
Hitting from a range mat is not the best method. Outside on grass would be much better.
This is a rediculous comparison. Bounce design is determined by turf interaction... This is off a hard mat.
If I could drive straighter, chip better and putt better i would be a pro golfer.
This video is useless - I normally love all things golf instruction - don’t waste your time
basically a commercial .....
This was not helpful
This test has absolutely no use for reality. You're hitting off carpet. If you play at a golf course, that has very hard surfaces like out in the desert. Then this test might be close to reality.
This video explained absolutely nothing about bounce that made sense.
