  • Silverado Short Throw Shifter Honest Install & Review. In this video I install & review Core Shifter's (Hurst inspired) short throw shifter for the NV3500 5spd manual transmission found in 88-98 Chevy Silverado pickups. Is this shifter worth the $420 price tag, how does it shift, what about fit & finish. I will cover all of this plus more in the video. Check it out and enjoy!!

    Well done T&R! I've got a 1995 C3500 Dually with the NV4500 with only 77,000 miles and the stock shifter is tight and returns to neutral perfectly. But I do like the idea of bringing the shifter back toward me and of course, shorter throws. Now to find the right one for me and my trans. Appreciate you making this video! Cheers! Zip~

    Depending on how many miles you’ve put on the truck I’d bet that it’s loosened up a little bit. And yes, you are correct the old style that I have in my truck has the bend in the lever itself. This was one of the first things I did to mine because the stock shifter was so loose. I’m glad I did it.

  • @BBBILLY86
    @BBBILLY86 2 года назад +5

    Needs to handle like a 79 ford Bronco. Looks goofy with the double bend, but feels and functions perfect. I had the Hurst version of this in the Getrag in my 92 SCSB 350 Silverado. Huge improvement over factory, but mine had a rubber pad between the stick and stub that constantly loosened. Ended up eliminating it and tightening the hell out of those 2 bolts.

    Nothing wrong with being picky about your truck. I never minded the sloppiness in a truck myself, if I want to drag race I'd be in a chevelle or something. The gears are too short anyway but if that's what your wanting I get it. We all have quirks and certain things we like about our trucks and you've got a nice one. Thanks for sharing.

      It’s actually very easy. Just swapping the trans, pedal assembly and grounding out the neutral safety switch on the transmission with the a/t wiring harness. Of course just putting in a master cylinder and running the hoses for the hydraulics. But if a vehicle had an option for a manual transmission, the bolt holes for everything will be there on the body.

    The jam nuts on shifters and shifter balls are mainly yes for fighting but made for help raising are help shortening it naw it’s now much but different styles for different strokes and a strong detent suppose to help not missing gear and the boot cover just get a base are spacer to help raise it r old one and cut the top off use it for a base but usually older style shifters and boots didn’t cover up the bolts kinda a race like style more r less

    Also they make you do some measurements before you order because not all the nv3500 transmission are exactly the same this got me because mine is just about this bad and had to get a totally new transmission and the shifter was already installed on the old transmission when I got the truck and figured it would fit the new transmission and it did not. It sucks having to order a new one with the right measurements when the old transmission already had the shifter I wanted. They make you measure the deck height versus where the ball seats into

    I have a NV3500 behind a Turbo 4.8 it whines in every gear(really bad). The transmission is basically done for. The shifter slop like that makes things hard at the drag strip. With the power the transmission physically won't shift into 3rd under heavy load. I have a T56 Magnum on order can't wait for a crisp shift!

Had to cut the floor as the shifter is back about 3 inches. Also had to shorten my driveshaft and put a different yoke on since it’s a different output spline count. Same trans mount crossmember

    • @truckandroll989
      @truckandroll989  2 года назад

      That shouldn’t be too hard. For starters I think you would want your CR to be at least 10-10.5:1 and ensure you are running good gas. Beyond that their are plenty of good cylinder heads from AFR, Brodix, etc. I would call up a reputable cam manufacturer and have them help you select the right cam. Based on what I know now pay super close attention to the valve spring selection since I suspect you are going to need to rev it to 6-6500ish to make that sort of power. From there probably a single plane intake, and 1-7/8” or better long tubes. Its not too hard but you will need to be on the phone with the cam and head manufacturers to ensure they play nicely together.

    • @truckandroll989
      @truckandroll989  2 года назад +1

      Ok so take my advice as just a guess. It sounds like you have ruled out an electrical issue since you can manually turn them on with the switch not installed. Here are my thoughts
      1. Is it an oem (i.e AC delco) switch or like an autozone/oreilly replacement? Maybe the switch itself is a bit short
      2. Is the shifter super sloppy? I wonder if its not making contact because it is sliding over far enough to go into reverse but for some reason that doesnt engage the switch
      Id see if you can find another switch and compare first.
      Finally, they made a few different types of transmissions are you sure its the right switch for your nv3500? I believe there was a HD NV3500 or maybe a other year trans that takes a different part number switch

    The problem I have with this transmission is, why have they got a low speed gear (reverse) on the high speed side. It is not only wrong, but it is wrong headed. I'm a pro driver, and my Firebird had this stupid pattern. It makes no sense. All low gears belong on the same area. Putting reverse on the far side is just nutso. Thank goodness my Chevy Cruze finally got it right. But I guess the engineers who design the old transmissions have automatics as their daily driver, and they really have no clue.

    • @racequad9

      Out of curiosity, why do you feel that way? Don't most cars have a reverse lockout so you don't accidentally go into reverse at speed. I know my 03 Cobra did. Unless it's for a different reason.
