    T5 vs T56 vs NV3500 2wd
    SM465 vs NV4500 vs ZF6 4wd
    Update: shifter position matches on all my full-size truck transmissions. However, most SM465s had the shifter a couple inches further forward. Mine is the GMT400 style 88-91 with the aluminum top plate.
    Info on the bell housings, input shafts, output shafts, clutch and flywheel combinations, release bearings, slave cylinders
    4spd vs 5spd vs 6spd
    How to make an old v6 or SBC or BBC transmission fit an LS engine LR4 LM7 LQ4 LQ9
    My 4.8 Beretta swap is getting an LS T56 and my 5.3 Blazer swap is getting an SBC SM465

    Very very good video..and very helpful for me..made me realize how many different ones there are to choose from.. I've been using the nv3500 behide 350's in 40 & 50's rat rod cars and everything has been super easy to make it work perfectly.. the shifter location lands in a good spot..and I use S10/Silverado fluid reservoirs ..and truck pilot bearing

    Hey GH Dezign, This is really great info! Thank you for going to the effort and sharing your knowledge here. Just a couple of things; There is no way the SM465 (CH-465) has the same shifter to bell-housing (face / back of engine) measurement as a NV4500 or ZF6 S6-650. I have a ZF6 S6-650 sitting in my garage waiting to go into my 89 1ton square-body dually. It is 15.75” as you say. I do not have a SM465 here to measure up; it must be a lot less through looking at the factory cutout impression in the truck’s transmission tunnel. I don’t have a NV4500 here either. If it is the same measurement as the ZF6 S6-650, that’s good to know and a help for this swap. 2nd thing and you may be just the man to ask this. I am mounting the ZF6 S6-650 to the original TBI 454 L19 (IV Mark 4, 2 PC seal). What flywheel pilot gearing and clutch Assy do I need? What I do know; the trans input shaft is 10 spline Ø1.375”and I will have to use a concentric slave cylinder. That’s about it. Thanks for your help! Cheers, Grant.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 года назад

      I finally had a chance to measure my sm465, and we're both right actually. Good catch! Mine is 15.75, but it's different than most of the ones I see online. Mine came from an early GMT400, and the shifter tower is offset to the rear. Photos I see online (presumably from square body trucks) the shift tower looks basically centered.
      So I'll put a note in the description specifying this.

    The k1500 4x4 trucks had nv3500's in them with an external slave. Some call them a getrag, but in all truth and actuality, they're still a nv3500. 99 and 2000 1st gen nbs trucks used an nv3500 with the 4.8-5.3 trucks as well. Very rare to find though.

    I’m working on a 1995 HD 3500 tow-truck.. it had a 6.5 diesel but previous owner pulled it out an out a 350 sbc gas n I bought it dead not running.. offer-up ad said transmission problems.. but idk u think it should be working properly with same set up clutch ,pp,tob,flywheel ,pb,. Well I finally got it started n pto of course operates in neutral..equipment seems to work great but my question is .. when I put it in 1st 2nd or 3rd it goes in gear but when I pull the clutch out it don’t move at all . So I dropped it n it’s all in new condition tranny nv4500 looking in tip-top-shape.. all gears go in n out smooth n don’t look damaged at all .. starter need it to be shimmed out so it starts good now no grinds.. but still no movement.. idk I’m gonna put back up with new sleeve cylinder n see if it’ll do .. but can u give me a better option or

    Hey I just stumbled across this video and it was super helpful. I do have a few questions though. I currently have a 1996 6.5l td bolted to a sm465 to a np205. The starter is interfering with the flywheel. What flywheel should I be using with this setup? Also I am interested in swapping in a nv4500 at some point and I wanted to know how much work that would be to convert? Do I need any adapter plates? Thanks!

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 года назад

      I would assume you want to use the flywheel that's original to the engine. Those 6.5s got the nv4500 from the factory, and it should be able to use the same clutch as sm465.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 года назад

      Depending on the year of your sm465, it might be basically a direct swap. Mine came out of an early gmt400 and the measurements appear to be a direct swap with a 90s nv4500. Earlier square body 465s had the shifter further forward, and I'm not sure about the tcase adapter measurements

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 года назад +1

      You can tell if it's a square or gmt400 trans by the shift cover. Squares had a cast iron cover with the shifter mostly centered. Gmt400s have an alum cover with the shifter offset to the rear

    I have a 2004 4.8 4wd silverado with the nv3500. my goal is to build something of a sport truck. My main issue is the NV3500 just feels choppy. I'm not sure if maybe the shift tower is bad or what but it has little play in the shifter and the truck only has 62,000 on it. really I'm just looking for a smooth shifting manual 4x4 so if you think a nv3500 is a smooth transmission I will look more into the issues unless you suggest something else. I built a mild 350 for my 1993 c1500 2wd and am gonna manual swap it. The 4l60e is old, tired, and doesn’t like the extra 100+ft/lbs of tq the new engine has over the old one. I had a custom 650cfm TBI built for it that’s ready for boost, and will be swapping over my OBD1 computer to the flash tuning system from dynamic EFI. Right now it’s about 320hp and 400+tq, with boost it should be around 475hp and 490tq. (Estimates from my tuner) I originally wanted to nv4500 swap it but I cannot find one for a good price, even the ones in need of a rebuild are well over $1,000. I can easily find sm465’s in good condition for under $1,000 though. How is the performance of an sm465 vs the nv4500? Not worried about highway manners too much. It’s gonna be driven on backroads and around town mostly, with a quick highway jaunt occasionally.

      For a 2wd 1500 you might want to think about nv3500. They shift smoother than nv4500, which shifts smoother than sm465. The nv3500 gets a bad reputation, but I've had good luck with them.

I picked up the trans, flywheel, and clutch dirt cheap, but it's still in the parts bin waiting for the answer...I refuse to use the pull clutch and want to use an internal hydraulic throwout. Are aftermarket parts the solution?

      Depends on what you want to do with it. For a big power hot rod, I'd go T56 Magnum. For a car that's less crazy you could go regular t56. Truck I'd go zf6 or even nv4500 5spd

      It's the same 5spd used with half ton SBCs anyway, so it should hold up for a while anyway. I don't think there's much of any aftermarket upgrades available other than a Core shifter

    It is possible to put a LT1 T56 behind ls engine with the stock bellhousing? If it is, what kind of flywheel and press do I need to do so? Thanks

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  Год назад +1

      I tried that and it didn't work. Depth was about right with truck pilot bearing, but the lt1 bell wasn't big enough for LS flywheel. LS is 168 tooth and lt1 was 153. Maybe with an aftermarket QuickTime bell? I dunno

    I have a T5 tranny out of an 88 camaro. I"m going to to bolt it up to a 02 5.3. Do i really have to get a big block chevy bell housing, cause i've heard the stock bell housing from the t5 should work, but that only 1 bolt hole won't get used. If i do need a different bell housing, i have a bell housing off a 65 C20 327 with a 4 speed. Do you think that might work? I honestly want to mate them together as cheap as possible. Would you be able to guide me as to what i'll need as far as the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and bearings?? Thank you in advance. Btw the 5.3 and t5 are planning to go into that 65 chevy of mine lol

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 года назад +2

      The bell housing pattern is fine, but it's the flywheel that's the issue. I think the t5 bell is set up for smaller 153 tooth flywheel, where LS needs the bigger 168 tooth style. BBC always came with the 168, but some SBC trucks etc did get the 168 also. So try out the c20 one.
      Use a 2002 4.8 flywheel and a 2002 Camaro clutch. If the c20 bell doesn't fit, grab a BBC bell.

    I'm planning to get v6 standard silverado, single cab and put that 5.3 in it. I've heard thevtrans will hold. Should I put a dual disc in it. Got any info I may need ?

    • @GEARHEADdezign

      Yeah the NV will bolt right up with 4.8 clutch and flywheel. If you want to make huge power that requires a dual disc, I'd find a different transmission. But a typical 5.3 will be fine if you don't hammer on it too bad.
