  • Edit: Due to everybody asking repeatedly in the comments, here is a link to the shift tower that I used (which can easily be found using Google or any other internet search engine - come on people, at least try).
    Note: I am not affiliated with Allstate Gear, this is just where I bought the part from. It came with a new gasket and a new bushing. www.allstatege...
    Good morning everyone. Had this old girl in the shop recently for a few issues, the biggest one being that the shift lever ball had popped out of it's corresponding socket on the trans, and it wasn't driveable. I managed to open the top up and get it into first gear, and then limp it up to the shop.
    As it turns out, the whole shift tower was trashed due to improper reassembly after someone had messed with it - and it had obviously been that way for many years. Blame aside, it definitely needed to be replaced so that's what we did. The result was a pretty dramatic improvement to how this truck operates - shifts are faster, gears are easier to find, and the overall driving experience is vastly improved.
    Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone. Thanks for watching!

    Just picked up one of these from a junkyard and when they took it out of the vehicle they took apart the top cap of the shift tower instead of taking the boles out and keeping it as a unit. As you can imagine it's missing the side bushings and the screws.. Gonna be picking up a new one. Appreciate the video!

    "It's not a complicated process to replace one of these" unless you put it together upside down. I could see myself looking at that shift tower cap and putting it on upside down. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you for the great tutorial. My shifter in my 1990 chev k2500 just went completely loose, could only get it in 3rd and 4th gear to get home. Hoping its as simple as what youre showing here.

      That's the plan my friend. Trying to find a decent cab for it, the side is so mangled I don't think it's salvageable...not on our budget, anyway. Once my son and I start working on it I'll look a bit more and see what's out there.

      I have been having problems sometimes getting in first or reverse. Also 3rd is clunky. You think this would fix this? Or syncros?

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Год назад +1

      @@joshuadufford4498 hey, sorry I missed this comment. It's possible that the shift bushing is going bad but if you're having issues actually getting it into gear, it could be your clutch, your syncros, input shaft bearing, output shaft pilot bearing, any number of things. Luckily the bushing is pretty easy to check and replace if necessary. I'd drop the trans fluid and see how that looks as well, check for any debris or chunks in the fluid.

      @@AllThingsMech clutch master cylinder or slavecylinder. As far as the transmission and transfer case go.
      I use AC Delco Syncromesh in the trans and GM ATF in the xfer case. I literally just use the owners manual and maint manual as references

    Same trans in my Dakota I took it 4 wheeling and out of no where it got very sloppy I figured it was probably that shift bushing

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Год назад

      Yep, I'd bet you're right. I've done this job a few times now on various vehicles, and every time the bushing had broken into pieces. Once they are ready to go, they go completely...not much middle ground with these. Luckily it's a pretty simple fix.

    that part was upside down because the plastic ball holder was already missing. that’s the only way, those metal tabs can go under the cap. BTDT.

    Got a question. I have a 02 1500 5speed and I'm getting a knocking noise coming from my transmission the sound goes away when I press the clutch in. I was told the throw out bearing was bad I replaced it but the noise is still there. Now I'm being told it's either the flywheel or the pressure plate. But I'm having no trouble at all starting the truck. It shifts gears just fine but unless the clutch is compressed I hear a knocking noise

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Год назад

      Tough to tell without being there in person. Is the noise present in all gears when you let the clutch out or is it isolated to a specific gear? If it's present in all gears then normally I'd say throwout bearing, but if you already replaced that and the noise is present no matter what gear you're in, then I'd lean toward a bad input bearing or countershaft bearing(s). What fluid are you running in it? I'd drain a bit out and check for metal flakes in the fluid - if the fluid looks good then I'd lean toward input bearing, which (don't quote me on this) I *think* you can replace without pulling the trans apart. If it's one or more countershaft bearings that have let go, you're probably in for an overhaul just to get all of the junk out of the trans. I'm certainly no transmission expert though, I never got too deep into them - we just pulled them and replaced them, never did overhauls in-house. The input bearing job is kind of a PITA, but doable for a motivated DIYer. Should be pretty easy to check how much slop is in the shaft once you get to it, but I would definitely recommend you find a good service manual for the NV3500 and poke around the schematics a bit. If the input bearing looks ok, I'd definitely call a reputable transmission shop in your area to get some pro advice before going any further. Right about here is where I'd need to step off the train, haha. Best of luck man, any other questions let me know and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction.

    Im not too happy about the replacements all being plastic compared to the cast factory. I have a 2005 4.8/5speed RST so needless to say its driven spiritedly lol how is the plastic tower holding up? Im wondering if i can just swap the top bits over to my factory cast tower as the discs and bushings are just worn and sloppy. Not sure i feel comfortable power shifting with the plastic tower replacement ha

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Год назад

      Yeah I completely agree. We actually bought this truck from the ranch for my 15 year old son. It's still being stored out there until he gets his permit so we haven't driven it much since we left last year, but I'm hoping to bring it out here for him in a couple months.
      The plastic towers are plenty strong enough for normal use but if you drive it hard, if you have any means whatsoever of swapping over the new guts into the OEM cast housing, I'd definitely do it. It might not make any difference, but something just doesn't jive in my brain about using plastic for a shift tower. Cost cutting measures everywhere you look these days.

    • @hebeb394
      @hebeb394 Год назад

      @@AllThingsMech I have the replacement in my hand as I'm messaging you this and it seems so cheaply made. For it to be plastic it's not very thick at all let alone be capable of some abuse. I'm going to disassemble both shift towers and see if I can just rebuild my factory one. Those pressure discs go a long way in removing slop from these nv3500s lol what sucks is I just threw away a factory shift tower 2 months ago during a move for a new job 😭

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Год назад +1

      Hi Victor. I don't know off hand, it will depend on the engine. Assuming the C10 has a SBC 350 in it, I believe that the NV3500 should bolt up. Even if it's not a direct swap you should be able to find an adapter plate that will allow you to get it in there. Might take a little fab work for brackets and whatnot as well, but that shouldn't be too difficult. I would go check out some chevy forums or performancetrucks.net - lots of very knowledgeable folks on there that have probably done it before and can give you more pointers. Good luck!

    My shift tower didn’t come with a cap/ isolator, can I buy those anywhere or just steal it from a parts truck?

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  2 года назад +1

      Most auto parts places can probably find you one, and they are pretty cheap online as well. If you have easy access to a parts truck they aren't hard to get to, but personally I don't know if I'd trust a used one. They break easily when they get old, it'd suck to spend the time taking the tower apart only to find a broken isolator, or have it break shortly after you install it. I think C&M has them in stock for less than $10, give them a try if you can't get one locally.

    • @AllThingsMech

      Double check the engagement of the tower to the transmission and make sure the ball is seated in the socket properly. The shift tower is completely separate from the gears in the trans so replacing it shouldn't have any bearing on the gears as long as everything is reinstalled correctly.
