    Really informative video mate!
    Cool that you also react to the comments from the last video. I do understand people who criticise it but I feel that they missed that you just did a casual test without claiming that the test was scientific. Your method was absolutely reasonable for the goal of the video!
    Keep up the good work!

    Many thanks for this new video Alex, excellent as usual. And thank you for the answer to my question (would you recommend an iD3). And yes, you did pronounce my name correctly! I love the fact that you are an iD3 owner, and that your videos are at a practical level. There are so many 'reviews' which do little more than reiterate the Volkswagen manual. I agree with you on the title of your recent AWFUL range video too! This is very practical information based upon short journeys. I will be doing a lot of short journeys ... Keep up the good work. Good to hear about the ability to play music via a USB stick - didn't know that! I don't have a smartphone, or need one, so cannot go that route. Best wishes.

    So great you are using the life edition. nice to see what people will actually be buying. Remember this is just a car. Its a really good one. Not sure why fiddling with screen is so important. Just set the music and drive ... anyway this is an old video now. 3 major software updates since it was made. It terms of charging and range, we drive in town and we charge the ID3 less the our old BMW 2.

    Hi Alex. Excellent channel with the real world experience on display. I'm in rural Ireland and thinking of an ID 3. Test drive coming up soon. Have to say I'm really disappointed by the winter range. We'll have to see if the test drive convinces me to take that on the chin.

    Top man. It’s your car, your life, your opinions - and that’s more useful than any other review in my book. Sadly very few things in life are perfect - the battery heating problem has been flagged by a several owner-reviewers now and it feels like an engineering flaw they need to look at. Even though you are forgiving about the software, it still looks infuriatingly bad to me, hopefully a big software overhaul is on the way. All that said, I’m still considering one, as it still looks like a good EV overall.

      I think the thing with the software is it's as good as most cars out there, the unfortunate thing is that most car software does just suck lol. They just haven't kept up with other software in our life, like our phones.
      But the positive thing is I think VW will work on this, they barely had the software ready in time for launch and it's got over the air update capabilities, so hopefully they keep updating it and improving it more and more. The hardware is more important because that can't be changed after delivery

    • @brucekennedy5274
      @brucekennedy5274 3 года назад

      @@EVDriver absolutely agree, software can be fixed updated hardware has to be right out of the gate. But your answer also exposes the point - with better examples of Ui (and bad ones too) literally everywhere you look, in everyone’s daily life including everyone at VW (smartphones the obvious example) why did they go with the ‘old’ in their brand new vision of the future? The answer I guess we all know is they has been going as fast as they can, but just can’t go fast enough being the giant company they are. We can only hope they are fully aware how dated and buggy the current software is and there’s something much cleaner and more intuitive coming. I’m sure (at least I hope) there are some exasperated UI designers at VW pushing things along. LoL first world problems ultimately 😀

    Just to comment on the Tesla model 3 vs ID.3 - here the model 3 SR+ and the ID.3 Max is about the same price. For that, you get a full trim ID.3 with pano roof and an awesome HUD (honestly, I rarely look at the big infotainment screen with the HUD). Also the ID.3 Max has about the same range as a Model 3 SR+. The perf of the Tesla is way more sporty of course but many don’t really care about 0/100 times. Comfort is better in the ID.3.
    Software wise, yeah, the id.3 is not up to the Tesla in many ways at the moment but a big update is about to land in March so that will improve things.
    Also, CarPlay is not supported in the AR HUD but standard HUD shows directions.

    I'm interested in the id 3 but now that I've watched lots of reviews and customer opinions I'm not so sure. It's a fair amount of cash for a car with too many glitches and relatively poor mileage compared to the competition, especially in winter.
    I'm having a hard time deciding on which electric car to get.

    Good video mate, to be fair the distance you drive is average for the most of people so don’t know why these people were kicking off, I had a Nissan Leaf 30 KW before getting my ID3 and drove that from Colchester to Edinburgh very often so I am a experienced EV driver, and even I can see I’m the Minority when it come to driving so I definitely don’t get those comments.

    Winter range; Norway here with a bit colder temps than the UK :) and I get better range than you. But, yes, for short journeys it currently sucks because the way VW chose to heat the battery to 13C when starting no matter what. It helps to have a heat pump (which I do) and if you keep your car in a heated garage (which I also do).
    Hopefully, VW will give people the option not to heat the battery for short journeys with a Sw update later.

      I wonder whether any other EVs have this problem. When you program a preheat does it also preheat the battery particularly if it is plugged in? I am retired so I will do regular short trips with occasional long ones so this this is an issue to me.

    You might have an answer to some of these please?
    Does the ID3 make strange noises when coming to a stop and when setting off, like electric motor whooshing sound? Or caliper rubbing/mechanical fart as the lightly used and potentially slightly rusty calipers bring car to stop and release again especially when adaptive cruise does this?
    Does the car make any other noises like whirring when ignition off as it tries to cool/warm itself that would be noticeable to pedestrians nearby? Is pre-heat function making a noticeable noise to pedestrians passing?
    I heard that motorway road noise in Model 3 is a bit tiresome. Is ID3 good for this?
    Does cabin air filter out diesel smell from other cars well compared Model 3 or other cars?
    Is there a turtle mode when battery below a certain percentage and does it restrict speed?
    Is stopping with adaptive cruise smooth or does it jerk to a stop?
    When the heavy ID3 skids does it tend to be a 4 wheel skid as the chassis is so evenly balanced?
    How does ID3's character compare to previous cars you owned?
    Do the dealers prefer to sell the ICE cars?
    Do you think ID3 will be more durable than the Tesla such as re eventual MOT failure through rust/electronics failure/mechanical underengineering?
    Can ID3 autopilot performance be updated to be better or are updates mostly confined to infotainment / display ?
    How do other drivers react to the car compared Model 3 or other cars? Try to tailgate it or not let out at T junction etc?
    Any unwelcome/welcome surprises after having the car for a while ?
    Does any cost cutting affect the experience?
    For example is the charging cap awkward to use or easy to break like on a string or something ?
    Any mods planned/desired?
    Can you disable car remotely if it is stolen? I think Model 3 can do that, not sure
    If autopilot and charging network and dashcam and range and camp mode and acceleration were same as Model 3 would you choose the ID3, money no object?

    I really wish you could disable the seat sensor and rely on the typical push start ‘stop to disable or engage power, reason being there are times where you have to get out either forgetting to take your jacket off or getting something from the boot or even open a gate/garage I got fed up with it turning off , also the proximity to the key once the car has been turned off and exiting needs fixing pronto , if Renault can get this right on the zoe the Germans could easily do this, also the key should go to sleep or have an off switch on the key if not moved a couple of times I noticed the key range auto activated the car if left in the living room , if this was parked on the road I’ll be more than concerned

    In most European countries, an ID.3 Tour is more expensive than a Model 3 SR-Plus and cheaper than the Long Range, but if you'd value in the difference of range between the models I'd say they cost about the same.
    I still went with ID.3 Tour with the bucket seats because my garage can't fit anything other than a hatchback car and I don't care that much about the superior horsepower of the Tesla. I do care for the software though and I'd prefer Tesla on that regard, but still... can't fit it in my house anyway x)
    Overall if size is not an issue for you, I would probably go for Ford Mustang Mach-e right now. It's more expense overall but it ticks every box on software, quality, speed and aesthetics.

    Mr Glacier, who commented on your last video makes an interesting point. Would it be possible to get your hands on a diesel car and run the exact same journey under similar conditions for a more relevant comparison?
    Also, when you’re doing such short range tests, maybe range isn’t so relevant, but efficiency is?
    Still an interesting watch though, thank you.

    • @EVDriver
      @EVDriver  3 года назад

      I think people missed the point of including a 'best case' diesel figure for comparison. What I was pointing out was that even at its absolute worst, it's still cheaper to run the ID.3 than the best possible case for a diesel car.
      But yea good point on the efficiency, maybe range isn't the right word, but what I meant was how much mileage can you get out of a single car on short trips only

    • @neilwalston2638
      @neilwalston2638 3 года назад +1

      Fair point. Best against worst and still better. I like. I think people do tend to forget (myself included) that all cars economy figures are hit by simple things such as travelling uphill and cold weather. Looking forward to getting my ID3 Life in the next month or so and checking these things out for myself..

      @38likewhat 3 года назад

      @@EVDriver really enjoyed most of your videos and have hit subscribe... but I do disagree with your premise on the winter range. Simply put in a petrol or diesel car people will not measure the 'range' in the same way. If you run a similar test... particularly in petrol you will get similar results... petrol consumption is particularly bad in short journeys at cold temperatures. As someone who has just put in an order for an ID3 (coming from a golf) I was quite worried by the headline - and do not think it is objective - as the range is only a limiting factor on long journeys. Thanks again for all of the work in the videos you have made so far and I hope they continue.

    If the lack of a heat pump, your choice, means you have a low mileage for each charge then that was a deliberate choice on your part! By the way well over 60% of households in the U.K. have off street parking. It is lower in cities but again that is your choice and an odd reason to criticise an EV if you did not think to consider that fact. At the other end of the scale we live well outside any city and could have a charging capability at home. However, the places we tend to visit have no rapid chargers yet. So even if we bought an EV it would have to be a PHEV and is the very reason we haven’t. We’ll hang on to the diesel until the EV rapid charging network really is across the U.K. so that we can use one car for all journeys. EVs are still a bit ‘niche’ for genuine everyday use if you visit places without chargers. If we could justify two cars then one of them being an EV is a ‘no brainier’. But as it cannot be long before the charging network reaches a maturity to match the needs of those who would use them then we’ll wait :-(
