Volkswagen’s new all-electric hatchback is here… And Mat’s taking it for a range test!
On the face of it, the ID.3 looks and sounds pretty impressive. Not only does it have a cool futuristic look, but you can get it with a 201hp electric motor, and up to 77kWh of battery capacity. That will do an impressive range of 342 miles, but it's the 260-mile-range model with a 58kWh battery that Mat's putting to the test here.
But could the stats be deceiving? Well, Mat’s putting this all-new EV to the test to see just how far he can go on a single charge! Not only that, but he’ll be sharing an all-new exclusive with you - finding out what happens when the battery’s fully depleted!
Do you think the ID.3 could be a suitable replacement for the petrol-powered Golf? It’s time to find out!

Just look to the future.
Serious accident or incident blocking motorway.
RAC............749 dead electric cars. 😊
@@wilsjane yeah absolutely not happening, people dont run out of fuel on the motorway very often, they arent gonna run out of batteries on the motorway any more either
@@manaspradhan8041 Until we get fast chargers that can refill a battery in about 15 minutes, people are going to plan their journeys in the morning.
If you had a busy day and your motorway journey home was 60 miles and your fuel showed 65, you would undoubtedly top up, but it is not so easy with an electric vehicle.
A local delivery firm is using electric vans and every evening they limp in with all the warning lights on, even after cutting their run short. An accident on the bypass leading to the depot that caused a 30 minute delay would leave 30 vehicles stranded on the bypass, particularly if it happened in darkness or extreme weather conditions.
Hopefully improved batteries, along with large numbers of fast charging points will be the way of the future, but at the moment the national grid could not meet the demand,
A London bus garage looked at running an electric fleet. The electricity supply would take 7 years to complete at a cost of more than 20 million pounds. To convert all London busses to electric would require more electricity than the output of a nuclear power station.
Prior to the high voltage national grid, London underground had 3 power stations.
Battersea, Lots road and Greenwich. These are all now decommissioned.
@@wilsjane Those cars would get home with more battery than expected due to creeping along at low speed instead of high inefficient speeds.
Since you start each day with a full charge, and considering how easy it is for employers to set up EV chargers in their employee parking, the situation you're describing wouldn't even come up for the vast majority of people who just commuting to work, and if it does, the Tesla supercharger network is about to open up to non-teslas too, so that combined with all the other options means it actually *is* easy to recharge.
Professionally driven vehicles that need to keep running all day is a different beast, but there's no reason to get a ICE car for your own personal needs anymore, as long as you can charge at home. If you can't do that, then yeah, it could be annoying though.
@@steave435 It's all about "what if's" and "when's" with you EV fanatics.
ICE's will not die for a damn long time.
They'll have to solve the massive infrastructure problem, as well as make chargers available to everyone.
Not to mention super chargers needs tons of expensive infrastructure work to be capable of supplying the tons of electricity needed for those kind of chargers.
Hence why the rollout of super chargers are very slow.
Most people don't want to setup camp at a local grocery for 4 hours to fully charge their vehicles if they don't have Tesla's network available, nor a place to charge at home.
Most people live in apartments, most people don't have private parking, most CEO's are not gonna get chargers for their employees, maybe themselves, not their employees.
I don't see electric cars succed truly before we get affordable Solid state battery driven EV's.
At that point Lithium driven EV's resale value will plummet to scrap prices.

VW engineer: forgets to put texture on steering wheel in CAD
VW marketing: BRILLIANT COLOR CHOICE
@ReaIly can't you put textures in AutoCAD?
@ReaIly true, usually on the engineering drawing release
@@sadmanh0 Any reason to render textures that early on in the design phase? Have never seen that before.
Engineers take joke literally, look around find themselves alone.
@@broadsboater8946 The joke was really just about how remarkably similar the white finish is to the blank texture used in many CAD programs, it looks unnatural. There's an engineer I work with that really enjoys putting fancy textures on design pitches, but obviously VW doesn't color the car by what some marketing person think the CAD looks like.
I really don't understand the new "fashion" with touch sensitive buttons. It's so stupid. Just put normal buttons to cars..
@timemachine_194 not true, mechanical buttons can last much longer. Its just cheaper to make it like this.
@timemachine_194 Failed mechnical buttons are cheaper to replace than a filed touch screen and in my experience the MTBF is about the same.
Yes I would say if the panel goes then it’ll be a module replacement whereas smaller components would be more cost effective to replace (ie only a few of them would deteriorate over time - you hope)!
If my phone screen is any example then touch sensitive panels probably glitch and malfunction a lot more than a mechanical switch. The only advantage I can think of is they're easier to clean.
@timemachine_194 honestly from this video it looked like the entire car was failing so you can safely assume that they didn't intend to make anything last longer
I came across this channel sometime last year and its been awesome cos i have really learnt a lot as i am a car lover as well, one thing that i look fwd to the most is what type of content is Mat going to drop this time. but all in all, i think i like all the electric car drive range clips the most and of course the drag races.
Id3 58 kw is enought for me. Very good car to drive and it is not too heavy. It goes smootly with curvy roads. Good looking also. Finland's winter works well too. When it is -15 celsius range 270-290 km. When it is +20 celsius range is 350-400 km. If you drive always 100 km/h range is 20 % lower. You can buy these in used also very reasonable prize too. Fastest charging speed has been so far 128 kw when the battery was warm and about 7 %. They tell that 100 kw is max but like I said 128 kw can be possible in good conditions.

This is the most meaningful test out there! One important thing missing...How much of the journey was on the motorway and at what speed?

210 miles on mostly motorway driving (where electric cars aren't as efficient) is pretty good In my opinion. What's more concerning is all the glitches you experienced...
Electric cars aren't even green 68% of america uses fossil fuels to creat energy and electric cars take more carbon to make, 1% of fossil fuel went down in 8 years so we aren't going green in a while
I have a vw passat tdi and get 45 mpg on the highway, i get 664 miles on full tank so hecka trash
Xx for me starting each morning with 1/3 of a tank of fuel would be great. I almost never drive over 200 miles.
But if I did I’d need a fast charger (or use our other car, in the interim).
Electric cars aren’t zero impact, just a big improvement on petrol or diesel.

The ID3 definitely has potential. As far as i can work out, the buggy technology is a classic example of how new technology is often full of bugs that are often fixed in later models, which is something I can live with.
But what I don't like is high tech for the sake of high tech and touch sensitive buttons that don't work half the time. In my humble opinion, steering wheel controls need tangible buttons that work 100% of the time. It might be old fashioned and "clunky" but at least they're reliable. Fannying around with touch sensitive buttons and unreliable technology can be about as dangerous and distracting as using your mobile phone at the wheel.

@@kovacsfilip4513 I hate volkswagen mostly because it has so much fucking plastic and also because their infotainment system is yuck. the interior looks pretty shit to me in my opinion.

The hazards not being a physical button is so unsatisfying it almost makes me not want to buy this car
I agree 100%. I have test driven this car. I liked most things about it apart from the non tactile buttons for most features. A real let down.
These "buttons" also preclude operating them by feel. If I try to activate the 4th from the left by sliding my finger across the first three, I end up triggering all of them. I prefer nice clicky tactile buttons.
And, the clumsy front/rear window mode switch? To save the costvof one switch? NO!
This whole cars interior is just unpractical
Being physical is overrated. We need to evolve.
@@Oldheadontheblock wrong
They keep putting in dangerous touch screens with the excuse that "Oh, voice assist is available so you don't need to use it"... yeah, that works well then...
In addition, the shitty voice control in no way excuses their causing existing car functionality to become dangerous to use!
I feel like a lot of people are unaware of how much they will endanger other road users in adapting to use controls that one has to look at to adjust.
For instance, in a car with physical heater controls, one can adjust the heat, direction and intensity of air into the cabin and lose 0 awareness of the road ahead - it's muscle memory and does not require looking at the controls.
Doing the same on a touch screen is another story:
Let's assume that each button press on the touch screen takes 1 second (including both looking and pressing). Adjusting the same 3 controls in this way at 60mph will mean a combined 78 meters of nearly blind driving. For context, this is farther than the total distance (reaction + braking) required to stop at this speed (highway code). And that's generously assuming that none of these are behind a secondary menu, or are in different ones, and that you're only pressing each control once!
It honestly blows my mind that it is still legal to operate a touch screen while driving.
I have them in my A6 and they are fine. You get used to them as you do manual controls. When I switch back I get the problem the other way now
You might well 'get used to them' but they still take your attention away from the road when you use them, because there's no tactile feedback, no idea about where on the screen your finger is without looking, and you have to look at the screen to find out.
@@cemerson I have haptic feedback so its like pushing a switch. I don't have to look down anymore to adjust radio and heater but agree if you go down through the menus it can be distracting

This car is evolving fast, already there is a 5 seater 77 Kwh available and that's the one I ordered, I can't wait to try the Travel assist, if it's as good as I've seen in other videos I will be very happy, it will greatly ease the strain of all the Motorway Commuting I do.
One of the great things about the id range of cars is it's ability to receive updated OTA, not sure if that's ready right now but it will be for those that don't already have it and things like infotainment, sat nav, adaptive cruise control and travel assist, and more will receive updates.
Already since this video was posted many issues have been fixed.

Putting the instruments on the steering column instead of a binnacle in the dash is a good idea cost wise. @@DavGreg VW calls it "ID. First Movers Club". If you decide to buy a ID3 First Editon you're basically beta testing.
Typical VW, consumer guinea pig test. Face it, VW have over the past 15 years progressively deteriorated, especially electrical systems. I dread to think how unreliable this will be in a few years. Brittle poor quality wiring and water ingress into looms will render many of these useless.
@@nikolais.70 from what i heard is, that this beta software is part of the buying contract of the 1st movers club. no hidden fault. no cheating. just the guy here who did not buy it, does not explain it.
