      @@cannygrowabeard Toyota perplexes me to no end. Toyota was ahead of the curve on hybrids. Toyota is not as centrally invested in ICE engineering as some others. Yet, Toyota is one of the least enthusiastic automakers for EVs.
      I'm willing to accept arguments for why smaller automakers aren't readily shifting from their ICE bread and butter, but Toyota is absolutely massive. Toyota has ample liquid capital to invest in EV R&D. Instead, Toyota mostly just offers compliance EVs.

      I didn't realise there was an EV industry in Oz :) You have to protect all the car manufacturers from.....oh, hang on we got rid of those. But EVs can't do the sort of distances we do in Oz - oh, hang on they can and with the ever expanding fast charger network it makes those distances easy. EVs don't pay fuel duty - ah, now there is the kicker. They don't want to lose the tax from petrol cars, and don't want to be seen as the only even partially industrialised country to tax EVs rather than encourage them. Easy answer - don't promote them to keep their number low. I can't see this changing until you can't buy petrol cars any more, and as we are totally reliant on foreign made cars, this time is fast approaching. By keeping the price high, only a small number of Aussies will buy them - problem solved. Unfortunately, no political party other than the greens will change this so it is here to stay. Good job Australia.

    • @Mymindisablank
      @Mymindisablank 4 года назад +4

      @@js-hl5hv Actually the average car in Aus does about 15k a year so the range anxiety is a bit of a fluff argument (unless you are an interstate truckie) When I road motorcycles we generally had a 200-250 k range and it was no probs because the fuel was there. This lack of charging here is similar to when LPG was first introduced, traveling was a bit hit and miss. I know a bloke who has 5 of 200 Holden ecommodores that were developed but they were binned as well as the commodores that were show cased at the Olympic games in Sydney back then. There is also an Aus company called Tritium that makes the Electric charge points that export most of their stuff to Europe and the states. Plus we are in the top six of lithium reserves in the world.

      Cost of ownership is significantly cheaper. In the UK, private lease deals means that it's not much more per month than the equivakent Golf. And for compan car drivers, it's significantly cheaper (only £12 per month for me in 2021/22). But overall I agree, manufacturers are charging much more for their EVs than they should. But then they have to face writing off billions in investments in ICE technology and for the new factories for EVs.

      The difference between the US & Europe is that the Americans hit them with a massive fine which then opened the door to litigation. As a big corporate, their lawyers will be advising them to deny liability. They’ll probably pay out some compensation to owners while still denying liability. That’s how it works. They could also be stringing it out for a while. That means owners who were affected will have sold the car on & it’s less likely they’ll claim.

      @@hughmarcus1 Exactly, they're behaving just like any other big American or international Corporation - think of Apple, or Microsoft, Exxon, Shell when they have been caught out misbehaving. The US loves to sue foreign corporations, they're much kinder on their own. VW shouldn't have cheated (they were not the only ones) but they were right to fight for their own company in the US in whatever way they could. Good work for lawyers though. International corporatist ethics are explained in a very slim volume indeed. VW have got the message, and they are going to catch up with Tesla whose cars do not have a very good reputation for build quality - that could ultimately prove very expensive for their bottom line.

I guess it depends on your definition, but the according to Wikipedia, the ID.3 is 1,600 kg. A Tesla Model 3 SR+ is 1,611 kg. 11kg in difference isn't much.
    The LR RWD is 1,730 kg, but my guess is the weight of the ID.3 mentioned on Wikipedia isn't for the model with the big battery pack and as such, the best comparison is with the standard range.

    I received my id.3 on its UK release data, about 3 weeks ago. I put a (refundable) deposit down on a 1st edition more than a year ago and eventually decided to go with it!
    So, I thought I'd try to answer some of the common questions I'm seeing in the comments just in case that's useful?
    - The white dash and steering is entirely optional - you can choose black, even in the 1st edition
    - There are a mixture of materials inside. Some are cheaper than others but overall it's nice in there, particularly at night with the ambient lighting which is fully customisable RGB. I think the interior looks nicer in person than it does on camera.
    - The price of the 1st edition was indeed high - I've been saving for a long time for my first ever new car. But the base model is rumoured to cost under €30,000 euros, which equates to under £23k with the government grant. That's best case of course and the duties will likely go up after the Brexit withdrawal period :(
    - Yes, the worst thing is the software. We were given the option of receiving our cars this year only if we join the "first movers club" and accept that "some features will be missing". However, what we actually got was a whole host of features that don't work properly. It's very slow, there are loads of bugs and random warnings for worrying things like airbags. OTA updates are not yet available and the first "major update" is due in January, which will involve a trip to the dealership.
    - This car is not intended to be a "T-killer". It is, however a very nice car to drive and the performance (particularly 0-30mph) feels great. There are two options for power ~150bhp and ~200bhp. The 1st edition is the higher power. Figures: 7.0s to 62mph, top speed limited to 99mph.
    - You can't attach a tow bar to the 1st edition but apparently upcoming version will support one
    - There are separate buttons for climate control and there are steering wheel buttons for the radio etc. The only problem with the buttons just below the screen is that they don't light up at night!
    - The boot is "longer" than most hatchbacks but is a bit shallow - i.e. high load floor.
    - The reversing camera is not 360 but has a wide-angle mode. The parking sensor graphic loads over the top of it, though, so you have to swipe it out of the way!
    - Although the battery is larger than the quoted "usable" 58kWh, they still only recommend you charge to 80%. It gets there in 34 minutes from flat, though, so pretty good.
    - It does have cup holders! :) In fact there's loads of space in the centre console thingy due to the lack of drive shaft. The glove-box is tiny though.

    Tesla produced some 370K cars last year. VW produced 10.2 million cars last year. Hell, the sole factory making ID.3's can put out 300K cars per year by itself, almost Tesla's entire production capacity. When a big company like VW decides to go for something, they have muscle to put behind it. They are going to catch up with Tesla way, way, way faster than the Tesla fanboys think they will.
    It's funny with all the self-proclaimed experts who show up in the comment sections of all ID.3 reviews, to inform us how VW have got everything wrong with the pricing and/or design and/or marketing of this car, happily predicting its inevitable failure. And when ICE cars pay for their environmental damage in advance, making them double in price. Then EVs will seem cheap by comparison. Personal transportation is a privelige and a luxury. Prepare to pay.

      The Dacia Spring will be released in Europe in 2021 based on the Renault K-ZE mini-SUV sold in China for €8k. Renault CEO said they were working on a €10k EV for europe. It hasn’t got a great range “at least 200km” but the price point is finally relevant to those of us on a budget!

    A good review, an great that VW ave pushed the EV closer to the masses, however Bobbie didn't even touch on what is possibly the biggest problem with this car (and its new Golf brother!).
    Having looked at a number of other videos and reports on this car, it seems that the main 'central' HMI is a total own goal.
    t has no physical buttons at all (OK Tesla do that, and do it well because they have a enormous screen that they can actually fit a load of bits on screen at the same time), but so overly complicated and un-intuitive.
    Apparently some journalists have sat and fought for 15 minutes to try to turn the air-con on and gave up and had to ask the WV people how to do it! Added to that, there are touch sensitive 'sliders' for the heaters, which are apparently almost impossible to use when on the move, and are unlit, so at night they completely disappear! And they're also placed in the exact place you'll rest your hand when trying to use the main screen...
    I haven't had the chance to try it myself yet, however It sounds like it is bordering on dangerous as to how much you're going to have to look away from the road to undertake even the most simple of tests (like turning up the fan).
    Never mind being stopped by the police for following the speed limit on the dodgy sat nav, I'd be more worried about crashing into a hedge whilst trying to turn off the heated seats!
    I think I'll wait for the face lifted one in a couple of years time when they've added a couple of rotary dials and physical buttons back in...

    • @PhantomBlade83
      @PhantomBlade83 4 года назад

      @@mattgrant9479 maybe for the heated seat (which you'll use occasionally, maybe more in an EV than ICE in terms of more efficient heating), but not for fan adjusting etc. And the point is that the button (haptic feedback i believe rather than physical) is a) unlit, so utterly useless when it's dark, and b) in the place you'll constantly be resting your hand to use the main screen, so you're going to end up with a toasted arse every time you go to prod the sat nav! You don't have to be an expert in ergonomics to see it's a clear and obvious design flaw.
      And whilst I've not personally tried it, the fact that basically every review I've seen about this HMI (in the Golf or ID.3) from well established and experienced car journalists have derided the system (including a certain Mr Smith, previously of this parish during in his podcast with Mr Porter), must mean it's more than just a fleeting opinion by some numpty (me!)?
