    Use the centre display: look for the graphic of the car (labelled ‘Vehicle,’) and then select Charging (the top option.)
    This will give you a battery percentage.

    Simple rule for me for a return trip..
    1- Start at 100%
    2- if you arrive at a destination with more than 60% don't worry about return.
    3 - if 50- 60% drive considerably more eco !
    4 - plan to charge!

    Thanks for this honest, no unnecessary road footage, range review/discussion. As a 52 kWh Zoe owner over two years, my data is very similar, but lower. Summer, I get 4.1 miles per kwh on local roads between 30 and 60 mph. Winter? Despite heated seats, heated steering wheel and good cabin heat from the heat-pump, it's only 3.5 or less. Increase speed to 70 mph and the range drops, so you feel like the poor relation with a nervous twitch as you fret about having sufficient charge to get there. Not cool! Until they close most petrol stations and/or remove the EV charging dead spots, nationally, I'm loving my ICE Honda Accord at 48 MPG on the motorway. We're in EV Phase One. Phase Two will see bigger range, better batteries with fewer minerals, more reliable, quicker charging points and, heavens above, cheaper EVs as China wipes that smug grin off the insincere face of legacy motor manufacturers. Thanks.

      I do think China will rinse us in the west on prices - no way will we get their prices! Looking at Nio and such in Norway, the prices are very high still, even with zero VAT! MG prices are still good, though better if you're a nurse etc, new ZS EV about £7k cheaper than equivalent Niro! But they need to electrify their '3' model etc, for my custom!

    I think although new EV drivers may want to “know” how many miles they have left, as you say, after owning an EV for a while, % is far more useful. As far as seasonal range is concerned, between the worst and best I’ve had on the exact same 150 mile (up to Lincs coincidentally) journey in a BMW i3, it’s closer to 30% in total for me. This is with adaptive cc set to 70 and approx 75% of the journey on motorways. We are talking close to freezing, rain, very wet roads, some headwind etc, but still, that 30% difference may come as a big surprise to anyone who bought an EV in the Summer and is used to optimum range.

    • @MrVolodus

      My worst case with ICE on 500km is, that usually I arrive with 1/4 of tank, but once there was super strong wind and I was empty 100km before 😂 I still can't comprehend how that happened.

    Love this guys delivery - I was wondering, when I try and do an economy run I get the best out of my ICE car by driving at around 50-55mph on a run - often with a touch of tailgating trucks haha - shouldnt be too dangerous with adaptive cruise on. I wouldnt normally drive at that speed but published best MPG's always seem to be quoted at that speed. I've not yet seen a review anywhere on an ID3 that trys to try at its most economic speed. Whatever WLTP is supposed to be, surely it should be possible to get close to that figure - however impractical for day to day driving that may be.

    • @GHOOGLEMALE
      @GHOOGLEMALE 2 года назад

      @timemachine_194 Ok thats great, thank you - I dont have a problem driving at 56 if necc, and certainly if I need the range - Good to know the WLTP figures are achievable though, most reviewers mock those numbers but usually expect it to do the WLTP MPG whilst trying to check out fast handling, rapid acceleration and heavy braking - it can't happen under those circumstances.

    • @anderspersson6134

    • @GHOOGLEMALE
      @GHOOGLEMALE 2 года назад

      @@anderspersson6134 Oh I see, I did wonder. The review on Battery Life channel mentioned on here was very good though, he was able to get the published figures and a bit more by using mostly steady slower speed. The published ranges are constantly brought into question or seriously discounted in reviews and they refer to WLTP figures "but then in the real world expect....." I imagine a very high proportion of range anxiety will come from people on a fairly long journey, probably dual carriageway/motorway situation - certainly for vehicles capable in theory of 200 miles plus. Round town stuff I imagine is a lot less anxious as its mostly local and probably within couple of miles of a charger if need be. So, if I need to range extend I'm mostly interested on whats the most I can safely wring out of the battery and arrive in a reasonable time - 56mph ish sounds like a reasonable figure, keeps up with trucks legal speed and much better economy than 70

    If you use ABRP and feed it with live data from an OBD dongle, it will predict the consumption and range based on the route (elevation, speed, etc) and weather (temperature, wind, with the Pro version), rather than just give some guesstimate based on previous consumption like the car does. Ultimately, the car should do this by itself, but until that happens: ABRP is the way to go.

    I’m finding very similar effects in my 64kWh e-Niro. Summer figures generally between 4.2 and 4.8 mi/kWh, 4.4 being the figure at which it’ll achieve the claimed 282 miles. Winter has seen that drop to between 3.5 and 3.8 (depending very much on type of driving, as motorways do so much worse than back roads or urban driving).
    I always hated winter just because it’s cold and wet and bloody miserable, but now that it effectively shrinks my “fuel tank” by 15% as well I’ve even more reason to loathe the season!

    • @Lewis_Standing

      In winter short trips can be worse, if your heating the car for a few miles then letting it go cold again, before returning and doing the same. it can really drag the efficiency down.

    Strictly factual content, facts relevant to someone who wants Real Info about using this EV, on those roads, in that weather: Check! Percentage remaining is better than "predicted miles": Check! Charging anxiety not Range anxiety: Check! A car that gets 'only' 200 miles range will be perfectly viable - when the Charging Infrastructure is ubiquitous, reliable, easy to use, and universally pay-by-debit-card. Certainly not the case Up North. For the next several years the only safe full BEV to buy is going to be a Tesla, because they are the only manufacturer that thought about, and solved, the how do you charge it away from home? problem.

    Great video, I’m not sure I’d be as brave as you! You can see the battery % on the app or in the car choose “vehicle” then “charging”. Battery % displayed is coming in V3 software. Also, VW tries to keep the traction battery above 13 degrees C so under that you waste energy keeping the battery warm, V3 software lowers this threshold so the car should be better in colder weather (fix not coming until spring 🤦🏻‍♂️).

      @@CED99 You are right. To help with this VW have a “buffer” at zero displayed so your not actually at zero, I think if you drive it until it stops there is still 2kwh’s left in the traction battery. If you drove 100% to zero a lot it wouldn’t be great for the battery but you would still be able to claim on the 8 year warranty if you had any issues.

    I've owned an ID3 for about 9 months now. During the summer the range is great. I charge to 80 % and mostly drive small roads at 80 km/h or below, and can get over 400 km. On rare motorway runs I'd say closer to 250 km. However, the winter range is perhaps 300 km on slower driving and maybe less than 200 km on highway (again, charged to 80 %). The numbers are estimates, I haven't done a real range test. This is at temperatures of around 0 C, with winter tyres, at somewhat hilly terrain with occasional snow on the road. The car uses quite a bit of energy for the battery heater and especially many short trips in the winter increase the average consumption. The winter range could be better, but it's not too bad.

      Agree the ID.3 is terrible in the winter even with heatpump. My odo is now over 60000 km counting various stays at the dealer caused by breakdowns and semi breakdowns - last time almost 3 weeks for a new main UI computer to be replaced.
      The car is very nice and comfortable also on the highway and the summer range really fine. I don't know how it is possible for VW to do such a terrible job on quality and winter range but they just have.
      Now this is my wife's car - i have a model 3 2019 without heatpump. Sure it suffers range loss in the winter but actually at a lower level than the ID.3 and the quality issues i have had now for 2,5 years with the Tesla are fewer and non of them have rendered the car useless.
      It will be the last time I buy a VW. There is no German quality or engineering in that car and it is not worth the sticker price.

Important but I would like to know how far I can go between charges on urban style trips where the majority of my trips are not at high speed. Would also be interesting to compare performance up/down the M1 versus A1 where A1 has lots of roundabouts and slower speed limits in many places than M1 but is a bit shorter when going say Hemel Hempstead to York.

    Good test, but that's too damn close a call for my liking. He's right, you wouldn't even think about it in an ICE car, but in an EV range (or charger) anxiety is very real, even more so on a longer trip you've never done before - you've no idea about chargers, availability, reliability, charging speed etc - you can't just 'go' and not think about it. I also seriously doubt an ID.3 holds a candle to a Tesla Model S, especially with their SuperCharger network.

    If the automotive world (except KIA, Honda and Toyota) would wake up to hydrogen technology then there would be no need to mine cadmium (the CAD in Ni-CAD batteries) which is carcinogenic and a finite resource like oil and gas. Hydrogen production produces oxygen as a waste product, and hydrogen fuel exhaust is water. Isn't this a constantly renewable energy source? Also, I believe that petrol/diesel/LPG engines can be converted to use hydrogen, so imagine the benefits to consumers worldwide.

Ain’t so with electric! Fully charge it and leave it for a few weeks, half the charge will disappear! Comes as a shock to most people that! It’s obvious that the technology for these batteries isn’t good enough yet. It will be, but not yet! Cannot understand why hybrids are being killed off so soon frankly

Ad as ever yet epa are totally achievable or just off by 5 or 10 miles compared to over 50 - 70 on eu testing it shouldn’t be allowed as for the guess o meter I can’t understand why bmw and Mercedes and the Korean brands can get it tight yet Nissan and vw leave you in limbos half the time

    I have an ID.3 Tour Pro S with 77kWh.
    My ‘worst’ performance yet with the batteries was from Fife Ice Arena, after an ice hockey match, to York - at night, temperatures around 1º to 3º Celsius, and with rain in a few places. Total distance: 235 miles.
    The WLTP range for my car is 342 miles. I completed the journey with 3% battery left, having driven the last 100 miles with the heaters off and cruising at 60mph on motorways and 50mph on A roads.

    VW has more know-how in the ride quality department. I tried the top end ID.4 GTX with 299 HP and it absolutely strikes a near perfect balance between dynamics and comfort (with the standard 20" wheels), as opposed to the Tesla Model Y which is a quite harsh ride on anything but perfect roads.

    • @whatever-xw8cw

      There is no such thing as a perfect balance between dynamics and comfort. It is all personal preference, what is perfect for you might not be perfect for me.

    • @curioussand1339
      @curioussand1339 2 года назад +1

      @@whatever-xw8cw Well, I don't think so, It's important to let people know about this, as many order the Model Y without trying it first and get surprised by the harsh ride (not even the performance version).
      I'm telling you, Tesla has to up their game, for the long run. In the near term there is a shortage of good EV's and Tesla will have no problems selling all they can produce, but once that shortage is fixed, it could become a problem with so few models and options.

      Very little if it has been charged sympathetically. ie charge to 80% unless just setting off on long journey, don't discharge below 20% too often and try and buy an EV with LFP batteries.
      They are less energy dense but have much longer cycle life. IMHO if you followed that maxim you are talking about a battery that would have a realistic life of over 500,000 miles, so probably longer than the rest of the car.
      Tesla are going back to LFP battery and other manufacturers use them, short range MG ZS and M5 I think but maybe not the newer long range versions. Certainly the yet to be launched Hyundai Ionic 3 and Kia EV 4 will use LFP batteries as will a lot of the Chinese offerings we will see here in time (hopefully). They are 20% to 30% cheaper but more reliable over time. That being said I don't have huge reservations about NMC batteries just know that LFP will last longer.
      If your dealer can't tell you the battery chemistry of their vehicles go to another dealer. Hope that helps. In my experience the life of your battery should not be a consideration at all.

    Hi Steve, I think this is the first of your vids I've seen and I really enjoyed it. It was full of genuine info and your presenting style is most enjoyable.
    One thing that surprised me about the ID 3 though was it's range, in reasonable temps - 190-ish miles from a 54 kw/hr battery seems a bit modest doesn't it ? My MG ZS gives me - in 0° temps - on average 170 watts per kilometer (272 watts per mile, so just under 4 miles per kw). In more mild temps - bought the car last sept so haven't had a summer with her yet - I average 150 watts per kilometer.

    A good demonstration of range anxiety! What was not clear was what the wind direction/speed was, which affects almost all cars. At motorway speeds air resistance accounts for about two thirds of the total amount of energy used, with the headwind/tailwind added to road speed, so it can make a big difference. I often do east/west day trips which can be around 10% different in each direction re fuel consumption. Other weather issues affect it too - rainfall, road surface etc - but the wind is the main factor.
    Given that air resistance is related to the square of the speed (1/2 mv2), whereas rolling resistance is related only to the ground speed, slowing down a bit can have a useful effect when you’re running short of energy, either in the tank or in a battery.

    By the way, here's the thing about "Miles per Kilowatt": If you want to ride an aerodynamic bicycle at 30mph, you will need about 300 watts of output. So if you can sustain it, 1KwH will give you about 3.3 miles. If you have a car that is getting better than 3.3 M/KwH, that is stonkingly good, as the 1.5 ton car is more efficient than the 0.1 ton cyclist.
