Coming from a climate where we dump salt on the road 6+ months of the year the sealed rear drums are brilliant. Why spend more maintaining a more expensive setup that is not required.
"Do you believe that ?
I got a bridge in London to sell you " 😆😆
How much for the bridge? Ask Rory !!
He might do in Spirit 🕊️🙏👋👍
Respect for Rory, I thought he's going to say that, not in behalf of vw, when he said do you believe that, I clicked like.
You can’t leave the car in gear or the auto in park, so the parking brake is pretty important to any EV. Ever look at how tiny the drum brakes are on the back wheels of a car with 4 wheel discs?
It might be true, 'i don't know'..!! bit of a shit comment, if you don't know if its true...IMO
He seems to be a very thorough reviewer that reviews how a car will affect real life (disability, the kid-friendliness, etc). THESE are the things I want to know, not how fast it goes 0-60.
But he forget to mention that some missing features are related to the first edition. Electric boot is available if you need.

@@kickedinthecalfbyacow7549 😭😂😂
This is the first review of the ID4 that mentioned things that matter (would annoy) to me. The little things that I would need to discover on my own and that I might not notice until after my purchase. Thanks
No mention of the Mode selection which alters Suspension and steering feel. ‘Comfort’ softens suspension and steering can be tightened if you wish.
or even the augmented reality properly mentioned
VW’s engineering devision “look at this great family car that ticks all the boxes and in a real world situation has great range.”
VW’s software group *sad computer noises*
That seems to be the issue with the ID brand as a whole is that the software is.... not to par.
VW does know about, and is bugged enough to bring software development in-house to get it right... it's not going to be a simple fix.
The software is pretty decent especially after the 2.1 update. People just overblows it. How was Tesla software with the first Model X ?
@@jonpetter8921 thank you. The software is going to get better, VW really spent A LOT of money on hiring IT People in Germany.
Just use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? All car infotainment systems are useless
@@MrMolchester yes, when it works
Sending love from Africa Zambia🔥❤️, you inspire me to start a car review RUclips channel 🙇♂️🙌
Do one specially for Zambia. That's a good start before targeting central and the rest of Africa
Excellent point about the range. If you mostly drive around town, 5-20 miles a day, then you could go do a “fill” weekly or fortnightly. And with 100kW chargers that isn’t too unbearable either.
I have driven the ID3 1st and ID4 1st and had zero problems with voice control. Top cars but i would go with the ID4 Business model
The Austin Allegro and Morris Marina had flush door handles. They were one of the best parts of the car looks wise (not hard I know) and ended up on the Lotus Esprit. Not exactly a new idea.
Another well done review, thank you Rory
Okay that unleashing was hellishly funny 😂😂😂😂
When the 1st Edition was announced I assumed it would be a fully-loaded-with-options model; but if you compare it in the recently extended range it's somewhere in the middle, and quite well spec'd for the price compared to the newer trims. Hence things like electric seats end up being options - and personally I won't miss them - unless I share it with the wife; that's when electric with memory becomes invaluable.
With the exception of the upgraded lights it was well specced for the price. VW have been quite shrewd with the newer trims. In Ireland you don’t get range and spec in the same package unless you upgrade to the 4th most expensive model. I’m not sure if this is the same in the UK but I think you get more bang for your buck in the UK.
2:19 that's actually true, my dad has a Kia soul EV and his rear brakes are always a little rusty.
Rory = Best Reviewer period
In general I love these videos. However, I always spot inaccuracies. For example the dashboard display isn’t on top of the steering wheel, it’s on top of the steering column. That’s just me being pedantic!
Great review. The best line: 'That's going to be scratched to oblivion'. Hilarious. Also 'time to unleash hell' (with Hollywood effects), followed by the super slow move forward had me in stitches.
Waiting for the GIF's of the seat adjustment scene to haunt him in future... haha. I test drove the ID3. Was a refined place to sit but for a boxy hatchback, the ID4 I think will definitely sell better
Saw this car yesterday. It's quite a lot bigger than it seems!
Agreed. It looks like a Tesla Model X in reality. It’s also better looking in person.
Rory, you are the best commentator, I'm giving you credit for knowing your Electric Vehicles!
Whilst Porsche investigating biofuel for use in future models. VW should've allow Audi to tie-up with Maserati, in 2003. RWD for the A8 Coupe and Maserati Kubang based on the D3 A8. All this information is available online. Will Rory is going through the interior. I saw the cabin needs plush fabrics for the door cards, console and instrument panel. Or the option of metal trim.
Biofuel is a waste of time
Yeah. The interior materials are crap. Not as shocking as the ID.3 but still. The only thing that felt nice in my test drive 1st Max were the brown leather inserts in the door. Almost everything else? Cheapo hard-plastic.
It's unlikely there will be too many *future* models using liquid fuels and i.c. engines. Audi have recently announced that they will be producing their final petrol and diesel cars for the European market in 2026....... Several UK car makers have already stated that after 2025, they will only be producing fully electric cars. Nissan have just announced a huge expansion of EV battery manufacturing in the UK, along with a new electric car model. The way ahead is clear surely? And it doesn't involve bio-fuels and i.c. engines to much extent......
It seems there were disagreements on key features and too many other compromises.
I already picked up a few, with one that's very old:
- I never bought in the rear disk brakes argument.
- The door handle thingy is another recipe to loose the whole car to someone else.
- the next update should allow the seats to fold nicer for flatter cargo floor.
Hopefully they'll go back to fix those soon in an update.
Never understood why top gear didn't utilise him more. Great presenter.
Probably because he’s annoying as hell, and has no credibility.
I agree, I wish they stayed with a more traditional dash from their SEL model digital dash.
i'd like to see someone do a battery test on these new electric cars to see how they do when sitting for a week untouched. Do it once during all seasons, and see how the range drops compared to a traditional ICE car.
Like most people my vehicles have sat largely untouched for weeks at a time the past year, but when i get in to drive them the fuel level is the same. I don't think the same could be said about a BEV, especially during Winter/the colder months.
But when you use an ICE after a lay off it immediately consume more fuel as they then have to charge up the battery due to all the electronic gizmos that have been active, e.g. alarm. So the range drops! And the fuel has gone bad as modern ethanol mixed fuels start to separate after a while. I can't see how the range would be noticeably effected after a week in an EV that does 4mi/kWh. I think it would also be very difficult to make a consistent repeatable scientific comparison.
It isn't something to get concerned about. Forget it.
I have the white First Edition lunar white steering wheel and white lunar door handles inside. Light grey interior with iD.4 imprinted seats/mats. All electric heated seats with nice massage option, mirrors (heated) and heated windows, blind spot assistance, rear air conditioning vents, charging pad, power tail gate with all the bells and whistles in the trunk. Nice review, but you never switched modes to drive faster. Sport has a little more pep! My front light bar lights up, and the roof is black outside but clear inside with a sunscreen. I don’t have a cranker for my seats. Cameras are all around and drive assistance is great in traffic. The 10.2 circular turn is amazing. Never seen such precision. The mood lighting inside, XM (spa music or …watercolors) set a nice mood ambient lighting at night with panoramic view of the sky. 20 inch wheels and nice rims. The infotainment system is larger. My seats have small pin holes in them for the heating and massage features.I love the door handles; it’s sensors to your fingers. You just need the key on you. One great thing about this car is the free electric charging for three years, VW’s version of onstar for 5 years, and an awesome VW app that gives great information. Overall, I am very happy with this car. A few issues with the VW WiFi connection with my phone, should be an easy update. Great car, I love to drive again. 🤗😉
Great review and great accent!
Really enjoy your reviews Rory this is my 2nd time watching this one.
1st time round I dismissed the car based on the technical issues with infotainment but considering it now after reviewing the running costs of other EV especially insurance groups.
The ID4 is probably the cheapest to ensure of similar size EVs.
question, what car does Rory own himself?
Mustang shelby
Nice one Rory. Best review by a long way. No daft pronunciation no …… “in the world” Clarksonisms. Keep it up.
fantastic review! Really insightful!
Rory, nailed it again Bruv
I really like your reviews. Direct, honest and clear. Good on ya
Rory please review the Skoda Enyaq. Need a comparison.
Great video, first time someone talks about the things I've been wondering, like the door handles. Appreciate it 👏
There is "a kick sensor" 🦶 to open the trunk...
And also 0-60 is 7.2 secs in sport mode.
Maybe we should say hello Volkswagen rather than hellooooo ID4😁😁😹😹🤭. I noticed this when you mentioned "Volkswagen" and immediately that voice command was activated. Secondly, My good friend one can also activate voice command manually by pressing voice command button on the steer wheel . It actually works very well. This vehicle also shows you a vehicle infront of you on real time...on that little screen infront of you 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌.
Finally, this vehicle isn't easy to use hence your friend won't come for lending. That makes me love it even👍 more.
I just ordered the ID4 GTX. Delivery in January
Great reviewer. Professional and thorough 👍
2:06 Roy just slipped and managed well
they can't cheat this time with petrol fumes
To be fair it was diesel emissions they cheated on not petrol
Autotrader's Reid==> Boot -> Rear -> Front.
Carwow's Matt ==> Front -> Rear -> Boot

Autogefuel Outside, front, rear, boot, drive, outside
Are VW going to make an electeic version of the campervan?
Yes. The concept was called the ID BUZZ. Supposed to hit the market next year.
@@seybertooth9282 ohh ok.. Thank you for the info update 👍
This the car of the year?
Rough year this.... 😉
You can’t buy the 1st edition. Unlike other territories, the UK spec is the least generous which omits the glass roof. You’ll need to add a heat pump and option a tow bar, £1250 & £850. To spec up a non-1st line to 1st, you’ll need the “Family” version at £45k, plus the necessary options of a 3pin plug at £212. Why didn’t they simplify the range choice is baffling, and I suspect the cost inflated to benefit from the old gov e-grant. Hmmm
Thanks Rory , I enjoyed your review . Take care .
Excellent review by a charismatic presenter.
It weighs HOW MUCH?? Also, that switch gear and entertainment system seem to be a major step backwards. That stuff is important and VW seem to be getting it wrong, with too much emphasis on touch-sensitive controls and not enough actual, manual switches (see the reviews of the Golf GTI Mk 8)
Amazing review👏🏽💯
40k and you have to crank the chairs up and down , ‘’wtf’’ next you will be telling me it’s got drum breaks.
There is optionally a light stribe in the front. Thanks
Great video Rory,. I’m unsure about the ID series, scratchy plastic, build quality and infotainment software glitches all make me ok elsewhere. It’ll be interesting to see the newly launched Q4 reviewed up against its group rivals. Test drove an e-tron the other day, very impressed (currently a B9 S4 owner so the move to EV will be a very different experience with Taycan and e-tron GT being out of budget). Interesting where it’s all going though and it’s clearly the future. Keep up the great work.
Interior is lovely in person. Software should be sorted on the next set of cars.
Please try the gtx when available
I will need a lot of convincing to buy an electric car, for at least 3 yrs, and the battery technology needs to improve, not to mention the battery warrantee. My experience with gas/diesel VWs was terrible, everything starts to break around 75k and very expensive on parts. Their electrics may be better. Good review.
% on the dash isn’t that helpful to predict when you need to recharge, the rate of change is what’s key. There needs to be more intelligent algorithms that link to sat nav routing for instance.
Looks nice. They could have ditched the plastic trim on the bodywork for £40k.
Looks like like a basic Kona.
I really dislike the ID design language VW has come up with. I drive a Tiguan and I love how it looks inside out. But these look like desperate attempts to look different just to look different.
Best video of the ID4 I've seen
Another great review Rory 👍
Does it get adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring n lane assist?
Great review as always 👍
oh dear...i was expecting more from this car ....when they arrive in OZ next year, this is the model I could most likely afford 😢😢😮
The 2024s are getting boost in power (especially the RWD) and improved infotainment. Even the 2023s apparently solved a lot of issues that existed when this video was made. Would love to see an updated review from AutoTrader!
Great video - thanks Rory
They can over engineer the door handles then omit powered tailgate. Nice.
Nice review sir! ...why no Matrix LEDs? Is this a UK issue as the Matrix LEDs appear in other European markets on the "1st"..?
If it's such a good review why weren't the Matrix front and rear lights mentioned. Where was the mention of the HUD? It isn't a good review.
I completely agree with your comment about battery percentage. I can guess my range far better with that than the car's "estimated miles". Unfortunatley most new EV's won't display it or it is hidden from normal view.
What Watch is Rory wearing?
Why is your track review of the 992 GT3 isn't out yet?
All the ID.4 reviews are suspiciously similar.
It's ugly.
The multimedia and steering controls are garbage.
It's not quick.
The range is not great.
EVERYONE SHOULD BUY IT!
It's hard be a journalist when you have to seem neutral, have to make sure you'll get cars in the future, but there is just one manufacturer that is light years ahead and delivers the best value..
We have to read between the lines..
I am waiting for an EV (maybe Ioniq 5? but that's quite expensive) that will finally NOT land on the buy-this-only-if-you-dont-want-a-tesla-for-subjective-reasons list.
VW pays advertising dollars to auto review companies and loans them out cars for reviews. That's why they are all suspiciously the same. Not to mention it has a cheap plastic interior and similar build quality issue as Tesla. Yet no mention of that.
Great review!
Felt like watching top gear, the cinematics is very similar
What would you do in an electric car when the batteries run out anyways?
Great Review! Cant wait to test drive this! I wish Rory would say how tall he is for room reference? haha!
5'11"
That rear window thing is a non-issue as you almost never need to open them in the first place.
Yeah right. Wait until you have kids.
İt's an unnecessary trouble
"Aggressive yet assertive"
As though those things aren't synonyms?
Does anyone tested how much actual kw to charged the car battery from zero % to 100%?
Rory whats in your personal garage???good content 😉😂👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 MUCH SUPPORT FROM ROTTERDAM NETHERLANDS 👍🏽👊🏽💯
2:20 I would like to buy that bridge.
Another great review Rory! I think that the id.4 is a great EV, however, when I switch from ICE to EV, it's the Ford Mustang Mach-E for me!
Kia SUV for me when it comes out.
Better review than Carwow
I find the reviewer on Carwow slightly childish and irritating...... He attemps humour, but it doesn't come off, and unfortunately comes over as childishness...... I also dislike the way he can often be extremely clumsy/rough with minor controls in vehicles when he's trying to show how they operate...... And that piece of stick he shoves up exhaust pipes is something a 5 year old might do...
When did you get the Yacht Master?
Talk is that who ever test drives a Tesla model 3 first, are skipping ID family😂.
No, I want a hatchback - the M3 is useless to me no matter what gadgets it has.
@@timmurphy5541 ID4 is a SUV , ID3 is hatchback but Hyundai and Kia have better options.
@@raghuramkalyanam Hyundai and Kia look like they have great options coming but not here just yet. The older ones are good but not cheap and they had problems supplying enough of them in Europe. The model Y might be nice but it's pretty fat and I don't like the idea of trying to park it in some parts of the UK.
That's fine, just as long as you're happy living with Tesla's sometimes dodgy panel gaps and sometimes dodgy after sales service.
@@timmurphy5541 Same here. Teslas lack the practicality I want from a car. Good in most other respects, apart from the stories of variable quality I keep seeing.....
The U.S. First Edition has a power hatch.
Looks like bit of Citroen...looks very beautiful..
Waiting for ur review for Kia Ev6 and Ev6 GT
Hey; sensitivities....when you suggest this car is going to be sold in 'America' are you referring to the US or North America? We in Canada do not like to be put into the same sentence as our southern neighbours. We like to be as FAR away from them as possible. Please identify US and Canada as they are: seperate countries! Thanks.
Rory’s a great reviewer 👌 always engaging and informative
Floaty suspensions are a no no and for 40k it should come with electric seat for the driver at least.
6:25 answered your own question there
Not a patch on the Ioniq 5 imho.
Wow, the end of VW and the rise of Kia/Hyundai! This doesn’t produce much desire for me, it seems about where an MG might be from 3 years ago.
It seems VW have limited imagination, dumbing down any desire to captivate and inspire. I know this is still early stages for VW, but the Kia/Hyundai are pushing the envelope…. Nah, definitely not for me, I’ll take the Polestar thanks…! Great vid as always by the way, Rory, thanks!
Roy, i am sold on id-4:-)
VW needs to be careful what they introduce to the EV market. Rather than toss a bunch of half thought through designs VW needs to hold back and hit the market with competitive products. The ID.4 falls too short in too many categories to be considered their best shot.
Good presenter!
I’m waiting for the Audi eTT or 991e.
I think VW are behind the curve already ! Not groundbreaking / seems out of date ! Looks boring. Gutted cos I wanted one
Ya but somehow this is considered a 'great' vehicle. Not sure how really. It's average at best.
@@JAM_2024 the Chinese have this wrapped up, wait till they release in Europe. Hugely impressive cars. I’m sad that VW have made this poor attempt. Not even a frunk !
The Skoda Enyaq is better !
The Word for Voice activation is Hey VW
Jiggly suspension?...I'm out..when will companies understand no amount of infotainment and flashy lights will distract from lacklustre mechanicals components..
No electric seats and tailgate in this EV?
Is it any good? The software in the Intelligent Design(ID) looks a bit dumb. Customers claim a software update takes up to 8 hours 😂.
Is it any good
So no one thinks of of exporting these cars to South Africa, VW SA is not taking us seriously .
