so I rented a banjo to try and learn this. absolutely love this song! can anytone tell me what tuning the banjo is? I realise he has a cappo on the 1st. But if anyone can tell me the tuning that would be great. Or where I could find tab to how he actually plays it
Stanley Ang One more questions (if you know)...I also play the bodhran and have been wondering is the black tape purposely there? Is that what makes the bodhran sound a little bassier/dimmer than usual?
you can tune to eadg or adgc - i play eadg as per Gerry's tutorial book - my advice is to practice the scales and easy tunes for ages and listen to an ipod playing the tunewhilst you practice it, if you can master a tune playing it slowly, you will play it better when you do go faster - i found i can't master some 'easier' tunes, but can play some 'harder' tunes better. i think you will find your own favourites!
Maybe they all had to tune to the bodhran! While D is a people's key, Eb is a much warmer, slightly darker key. Very beautiful key. A good idea when you don't want your arrangement to be hijacked by overzealous session bandits.
Many Irish fiddle players like to tune the whole instrument up a semi-tone which gives the fiddle a brighter sound and more string tension. Banjo and guitar and bouzouki players will capo at 1st fret to compensate.
Who's listening in 2024?!
👍

Splendid set here. Is anybody able to name the second tune played here, starting at 2.24?
+woodleybob I believe it is a jig titled "Trip to Killarney." If you find it's something different, though, I'd love to know. It is a great set.

Anyone know the name of the second tune?

Sorry Not screaming just a mistake with caps lock as pointed out Mr Alban
What’s the name of second piece after banish misfortune
I just realized the bodhran can sound like a talbla if done correctly o.o
I believe that's Gerry's son on the bodhran. Eamon Doorley on bouzouki. Don't recognize the guitar player, but he looks like an O'Connor
Tony Byrne
Guitar player is Tony Byrne...excellent player!

The Irish Banjo is usually tuned GDae. You can find the score of this piece on thesession.org, but it won't be the exact version.
Stanley Ang Thanks Stanley will give it a lash
Cool let me know how it goes

It's a Bouzouki as far as I know.
AR FHEABHAS
Can you be hired out for wedding partys ?
You're taking the mickey right? Man, I hope so.
Eb ? Who plays in Eb? Particularly when D is right next door and doesn't require a capo? I mean, it's Gerry O'Connor so it's gorgeous, but still...
Maybe that banjo is easier to play in tune with the capo on?
Maybe they all had to tune to the bodhran! While D is a people's key, Eb is a much warmer, slightly darker key. Very beautiful key. A good idea when you don't want your arrangement to be hijacked by overzealous session bandits.
It provides the tune with a different tone and hence a new sound, very subtle, slightly higher pitch, tighter sound.
