I remember the first time I saw Gerry play on RUclips in my college dorm room. I was blown away. Been following em ever since. What an unbelievable talent and great guy. hope to see him play in person one day. Cheers Gerry
We are so lucky to have known Gerry before he became famous. He was always an outstanding musician and used to play in my mum & dad's pub in Garrykennedy, Portroe in Co Tipperary. We are all so proud of his achievements. Well done Gerry.
Solo due parole: Grandissimo Gerry!! Spero un giorno di vederti suonare dal vivo, sei un vero mago del banjo!! Saluti a tutti i fan di Gerry dalla piccola Svizzera.
Phantastic! First class performance! Unfortunately I have never been in Ireland, but I suppose this is the best Irish Banjo player. I enjoy to hear and see this very, very much!
What a few tunes, riproaring stuff, brilliant to hear and watch such good musicians thanks for the wonderful music and the enjoyment ye get out of it and thanks for giving so much enjoyment to so many people, keep up playing
Heard "Old Joe's" and "The Cordal" as jigs and "Billy In The Low Ground" and "The Temperance" as reels. So could you change "Tom Billy's Jigs" to "Tom Billy's Jigs and Reels"?
+Kevin J it had been thought the Africans adapted the gourd banjo from the arabs. But there are many banjo like instruments in Africa like a jola akonting and kora.
Quiet as a mouse peein' on cotton. Now that's the kind of audience you don't mind playing for. I wonder if this concert was in the U.S. Bet it wasn't. No one is yelling, clapping off beat, and stamping their feet or screaming, "Duelin' Banjos" like they do here in the states when somebody plays banjo. .
The guy you replied so nicely to was actually commenting on how well the audience reacted to Gerry. The performance is at Celtic Connections in Scotland so get your facts straight before mouthing off on the internet you keyboard warrior.
Hmm, I think US audiences are pretty well-behaved over all. But then I live in Turkey where people tend to leave their cellphones on in concert halls....;)
Barney McKenna was a beautiful person and a great musician, but Gerry is a million miles a better banjo player. To see him stuck behind and playing second fiddle to that arch-charlatan Sharon Shannon is heart-breaking. She's not fit to lace his boots.
well, I like Sharon's playing, don't know what you talk about. Agree with the comment about Barney, never quite understood the hype about his playing, Gerry and plenty young lads do a better job on banjo. Barney deserves credit for popularizing ITM and banjo though.
@@shambles7ful Well, I am not joking. I even gave Barney another chance after your reply and I am not able to find a recording, where he was not making mistakes and where he was tight/precise in rhythm and ornaments. I am open to discussion, so please point me to a good recording and I can re-evaluate my opinion, just please be fair in discussion and don't blame me of joking. Kieran's playing is nice, I used to be a fan, but I prefer Enda Scahill or Stevie Dunne.
Barney is no Gerry and Gerry is no Barney. Barney and Gerry are no Kieran and Kieran is no Gerry...or Barney. Get my Point? Each of these banjo players are great in their own way and cannot be compared or duplicated. Your ear will decide what you enjoy listening to.
Who's listening in 2024!?!?
brilliant Gerry and the all the lads great job
I watched Gerry play a fiddle live today!

Gerry is a Banjo God. He could make three blind mice sound like a work of musical art.
Barney McKenna said that Gerry was the best pupil he ever had.
Must say that Gerry also had a very good teacher
him and bela fleck
Ah he's just the best. What a beautiful piece. Put a massive smile on my face
GERRY O' CONNOR, THE BEST IRISH TENOR BANJO PLAYER!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Without a doubt
This is absolutely brilliant, wonderful playing and makes the heart sing......
Pure therapy
This was brilliant. 4 great musicians.
this is so good, gerry at his best. hello fiach
Oh yeah. Brilliant.
Aw it's just a joy to watch a master craftsman/person at work. Imagine the years of hard slog to make this performance seem so effortless.

Light as a feckin feather. This is top quality musicianship all round. Thanks guys.
Such outstanding talent here. Exceptional playing and an all round fantastic post. Thank you. Best regards.
great rhythm guitar on this too
Hats off to the Brits. They know how to show a little respect for an artist.
I heard Gerry O'Connor play 2 jigs and 2 reels in this video today. I liked it.
Beautiful is what beauty does….☮️🎶🔛🌎
Just outstanding..love it.

this is pure GOLD - i'm from Norway , and i love this ....
Great feeling and gentle touch. Inspiring!
Absolutely brilliant!
Gerry......yuo are awesome.....incredible talent.....a virtuoso...great viruoso!!!!!
Just plain crackin' good.
1st jig sounds similar to "Old Joe's Jig" from Boys of Lough 1st album. Great playing and tune selection for the medley.
Brilliant just brilliant
Brilliant 😂

Wonderful!!
Damn great music here!
Best in the world.

Old Joe's Jig is the first part you're looking for.
The rest: Tom Billy's, Billy In The Low Ground, and The Temperance
shame on youtube for not promoting this only 1.6k upvotes is wayyyyyy too low
wonderful :)
Grandios;!!!
Fabulous
Always great! Triplet king:)
Class
He was, may he rest in peace at fiddlers green!
Lovely stuff. Just in case anyone was struggling to find it, I think the second jig is better known around my parts, at least, as The Cordal.
It’s just good....
"...leave their cellphones on in concert halls". Hmmmmm. So Turkey is where we got the idea. Thanks for the heads up.
For me the best Banjo player in Ireland.
+Garry Carroll Two words:
Barney McKenna.
I agree! But now that Barney has gone to Fiddlers Green, Gerry has the honours IMO
Garry Carroll great!!
He's my uncleeee
Nice tremolos on the banjo.
glad to be able to say hes a tipperary banjo player like myself :D
nice
@mozzarella79 I am not sure about the the first reel ,but the last one is ´´the temperance reel´´ played in a sort of bluegrass beat, cheers
The third tune is "Billy in the Lowgroun," an American Old Timey tune.
Excellent! Why is this set called "Tom Billy's Jigs" if it is Old Joe's/The Cordal/Billy In The Low Ground/The Temperance Reel?
Don't wish to be controversial, but I think he's even better than the late great Barney McKenna.
Terry Gale SUPER CONTROVERSIAL
Terry Gale m
If the pupil doesn't surpass the teacher, the teacher wasn't a very good teacher...
You're talking about music, it's no competition nor race. Stop trying to compare people.
Good point!!
this was recorded in Britain.
Can anyone tell me the name off the jigs at the start,I know there tom billys jigs but is there other names for them, thanks
at the end there are some sounds quite like cooley's aren't there?
Can some one tell me the tuning on the banjo plz.

Can't you download this to your phone anyway iTunes or anything like that??
Thanks

Is this a gibson tenor banjo gerry is playing?
Yep
Has he really only got 5 digits per hand? He plays 5 notes to my 1 Inspired playing
You can kinda hear the bluegrassy influence in this XD Its amazing!
Yes, I do know that, but the influence was not only one way. For example, the banjo was brought to Ireland after America.
Is this a bouzouki in the most right?
+ISE D- Yup.
+Kevin J it actually originated in greece
+Kevin J and the banjo is from middle east
And it sounds great in Irish music. funny how these things go isn't it?
I thought the banjo's ancestor was from Africa.
+Kevin J it had been thought the Africans adapted the gourd banjo from the arabs. But there are many banjo like instruments in Africa like a jola akonting and kora.
i know its like really soft not tangy
is his banjo in standard tuning?
No Its jazz tuned
+Colin Feeley cgda
Its in original banjo tuning, gcda.
who's the guitarist? what about guitar tuning?
oui, quel est son nom?
That's Tony Byrne. He's one of the few trad guitarists that often plays in standard tuning, as far as I'm aware.
Tony Byrne and he plays in standard. Correct. In standard its best to use open chord phasing stats why it sounds open tuned
That’d be me. 👍🏻

You gotta be joking right ? Barney was way up there, one of the best ! Kieran Hanrahan comes out on top in my opinion, no one plays like him.
