      Well it depends on what the guy does. If he’s doing something like programming things to balance server load he doesn’t need to know anything about gaming.
      It’s not even the “devs” as in programmers that are the issue. It’s the project managers and the feature teams that come up with this stuff that are to blame. Not the people who just implement what they’re told and have no say in how things work or what they cost.

    The thing that distresses me most with this stuff is that Elite: Dangerous could have been a truly groundbreaking game that defined the genre.
    However - the lazy world building, the constant need to add grind to cover up the lack of world building or gameplay and inability of Frontier to understand what makes the game fun have almost killed it.
    Elite is the game I have the biggest love-hate relationship with. It has some truly amazing visuals, the experience of exploring the milky way, the feel of the cockpit etc. etc. create some amazing experiences - and the community has had some amazing moments. The Fuel Rats being one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. There have been awesome moments - like when players first encountered the Thargoids or when the Thargoids first started attacking stations they managed to create a wonderful experience. When I first experienced this game it was in VR with full joystick controls at Insomnia Gaming Festival - it was one of the most promising VR experiences I have ever had.
    But it's things like how the Capital Stations for the Empire and the Federation are *identical* - a completely wasted opportunity for world building. That the three factions don't really mean anything in the game beyond adding a grind system. And, worst of all, how unlocking new content requires absurdly repetitive game loops that turn what would have been interesting scenarios and encounters into a repetitive grind.
    One of the worst things I experienced with the game was when I decided to get the Corvette... the gameplay loop I had to go through to unlock it genuinely made me feel ill.
    The carriers are yet another example of what could have been a really exciting gameplay mechanic that added to the game - they *do* look fantastic afterall - have been completely squandered by frontier's need to create repetitive gameplay loops.
    Done right this game could have turned Frontier into another real AAA publisher. Instead it's just another odd game that barely anyone has heard of. And that's a shame because this had soooo much potential.

Frontier has exceeded my wildest expectations for their stupidity, and I already thought that they would manage to ruin it. Now, I agree: upkeep must go, completely, Frontier is too out of touch to ever set a reasonable number. And this is before even worrying about the main problem of what you're supposed to do with FCs.

      10,000,000 CR/week is like a single delivery job, that was doable and I'd have happily paid it if the Carrier did anything I wanted it to do. What I would like is a place to store my ships and my squadron's ships so we could travel the bubble and do stuff quickly.
      But nooooooooooooo... Shipyard alone doubles the upkeep and repair/refuel/restock (the kind of things you might want in a system that doesn't have them already) will quintuple it. Buying Outfitting seems like an endless black hole of credits for a slight convenience, to let friends outfit new ships quickly
      And as the final stinking coiler on top of the shit sundae, they're not a Squadron asset any more. So instead of your playergroup working together to maintain it, it entirely falls on one player to shoulder the burden. Thanks, FDEv.

    • @deckardcain9789

      I initially said 10 Mil/week is insignificant. 7.5 billion a year in rent? That's thousands of hours of just playing, or hundreds of hours of intensive, dedicated mining. And you STILL lose it if you go to the hospital for more than 14 days! No Sale.

    • @elethiomelzakalwe4453
      @elethiomelzakalwe4453 4 года назад +8

      @@51gunner Yes, I think the part about not being a squadron asset gets pretty much to the core of the problem: they've balanced them as if they were to be used for guild (squadron) oriented play, but that type of play hardly even exists in Elite, and then they went and stripped the last vestige of it away from them.
      So there are a few things going on that exacerbate the problem: one, they don't play their game, or if they do, they play it with unlimited assets and so never get to see what actually goes into playing it. Two, they can't seem to make up their fucking mind about whether they want to design MMO features or single player features, so they invariably come up with an incredibly ugly compromise between the two that just doesn't work. We saw it first with powerplay, then with multicrew, and finally now with Fleet carriers.

You're paying for a scan-proof hold and for staff that can keep their mouth shut while fencing goods. None of which will be put on any public books as that.
      Still it's not really worth anything let alone the ridiculous costs they put on it... the whole carrier design is crappy enough without making "realism" arguments against it. @@Br3ttM yup, instead of actually adding fun involving gameplay, they create reasons for players to do the same gameplay loop time after time (the Guardian 'puzzle' needed for weapon/module unlocks, scanning ship after ship to get the correct data type, the old way of surface material gathering of driving your SRV for literally hours to find the right type of meteorite etc) If Frontier devs actually played the game to see how incredibly boring this can be, maybe we would get some better game design. This could also broaden the games playerbase instead of Elite being such a niche game (played by older players that maybe have more patience for all of these design fails) It would be better for Elites entire community for the game to have more players (more players to trade, pirate, combat etc) and hopefully more money to Frontier to improve the size and quality of updates.

    This sums up how I felt about ED when I stopped playing it after a few months...
    Took me 4 months of grinding to go from an Eagle to a Vulture. Then, took me 2 months of grinding in my Eagle to get the Vulture "up to spec". And then, I'm afraid to fly my brand new ship because the rebuy is super high, so I continue playing in my Eagle.
    When I finally start using my Vulture, I have to relearn my strategies doing barely paying missions/bounties because I don't know how to fight in this "new" 6-months-old-but-still-smelling-brand-new Vulture.
    When I finally get decent with it, I look at what my next tier, I balk and just stop playing.

A lot of the things they implement have a hard time tying into the overall game, it's just a bunch of additional add-ons dangling off a game that was released years ago. But in an RP sense you have a giant ship, that ship will have ongoing expenses for example; paying a crew to operate and maintain it (to include the poor maintenance workers repairing and refueling anyone that comes in), the cost of food, water and any parts needed to repair or maintain said ship during normal operations. Imagine the cost to operate and maintain an aircraft carrier, The Gerald R. Ford-class cost $12.8 billion and an estimated 2.5 million per day to operate.

      @@AP-gk6se Um, you know that A) My original comment is around 2 months old and B) This video is VERY outdated? And FYI, the in-game cost is actually justified.
      What we're actually buying is the Carrier itself. The source of the weekly upkeep mostly comes from the crew (provided by a third party) who actually run and maintain my carrier. I must pay them for all services and any additional services (plus any associated products), and jumps also cause wear and tear as we know. Yes, the initial costs from the beta were absolutely asinine. But now they're DRASTICALLY reduced and at most you'll be paying around 25mil credits. A single good 3LTD Egg mining run at 512t will set you up for quite a while.

    I thought the “in numbers” bit would be referring to the literal hundreds of carriers bought and then abandoned after players realized how useless they are and provide no real benefit and you’re basically just paying for a mobile station....and those exist in every system in the bubble. “B-but you can travel 500Ly instantly!” after an hour, and it’s cheaper and faster to travel where you want to go in a throwaway ship, then pay 20k credits and 15 minutes to have your ship moved to you.

    I think that universal cartographics could have a timer delay to “establish deep space comms relay” so that exploration still has some risk as you venture away from your fleet carrier, and straight line jumping somewhere may be faster, but increases the risk of loosing exploration data. Additionally, this mechanic would allow player owned megaships to act more like stations that could be strategically placed in the black. I can understand the desire to maintain the risk of exploration, but frontier’s expectation that explorers with fleet carriers will just hemorrhage money is laughable.

    • @lilagtook
      @lilagtook 4 года назад

      Given that you can't actually fly Fleet Carriers around systems (and they are thereby safer from being lost), I'd be ok with them implementing a cartographics storage setup, so you could cache in your exploration data from your exploration ship. Still would have to get back to a station to get the payout/credit.

    You get the feeling that the developers have absolutely no interest in bringing these fleet carriers into the game and have only implemented them in beta in order to thoroughly ruin the interest of the players and to finally silence the (for the developers) annoying questions afterwards . Perhaps it was once planned to implement these carriers, but at some stage during development there were insurmountable problems or reasons that this entire feature was (internally) deleted. For me, the beta looks like a "See. We have not given you any hopes for fleet carriers because we have given them up (internally) for a long time. Now shut up and don't bother us anymore."

    • @johnkapwn
      @johnkapwn 4 года назад

      They were never intended for players to own in the first place. FDev wanted them to be group exclusives essentially, kinda like Eve. And then people who didn't play in a group wanted to own fleet carriers solo and FDev hesitantly obliged. And in my honest opinion, these prices are probably realistic to what it would cost to own and operate a massive multi-thousand crew space station that can jump, even if that cost is absolutely outrageous in gameplay.

    Players: Hey these things are way to expensive and time intensive Devs: Exactly, But we still have given all of you what you've asked for and wanted so we're good. That's how this is going to go down for sure sadly. P.S. Mining the fuel for these is terrible too. Speaking of mining remember that feature update for exploration and yep to make mining better and it was. You can have un "infinite" amount of "small" ( I know the big 3 etc) ships, park them almost anywhere in the galaxy, and it just costed the price of the ship, a little bit of time.
    In this case you DO NOT in any time have to pay the park area.... Even for a big ship. Also for the big 3, yep i am coming back to them, YOU can pilot them ALONE and it cost you nothing....
    But no just for a player meg... hum fleet carrier, you have to pay for something that can (in the lore perspective) be automatized and do not need any crew....
