Read a post on reddit where a guy is coming back from the deep dark after exploring for over a year (he took a hiatus for a while) and has years of cartographic data he doesn't want to lose and is worried about getting ganked.
Obviously, we all told him to return in solo rather than open. Here is where I think if you have a fleet carrier you could make some profit.
While yes, you get less cash for selling your data at a carrier, if you have a lot of data and want to keep from losing it by heading back to the bubble, FCs parked in strategic locations out in the deep dark could make some coin by doing so.
Obviously, FC pilots would need to take initiative and spread the word they're out there, go on scouting expeditions themselves to find tritanium and mine up what they need to keep the carrier afloat.
Yes, a lot of ifs, but they might be able to pull it off.

What you're describing is a risk reduction use, not an earning use. The whole problem with carriers is they can't earn any tangible credits on their own that scale with their recurring costs and massive initial investment. They were billed by the devs as a "lucrative investment" meaning they should - by design - be able to not just fully cover their upkeep, recoup their 6bn purchase price, but also give their owner something on top. Right now we are struggling to cover a tiny fraction of upkeep realistically.

  • @tobiasstamenkovic9628

You cant even offer people a price that would make them want to sell commodities to you.
The max you can offer for LTD's for instance is around 600kish (If you hold down the mousebutton for FIVE MINUTES, because why would anyone want to type in a number),
which bears the question of who in their right mind would sell you those things for 1/3 of what the vendors can pay you...
But then again, commodity prices have allways been a joke. Even the most killer deals will only net you 10k a ton. Thats ALOT of Clippers worth of cargo until you rake in 5b.
Ironically, its not like changing a bunch of numbers would be any effort for the devs, they seriously just dont seem to care if theres no ship-kit attached to it.

These opinions clearly match what I have observed. Carriers are not profitable. They are a money sink only. I use my carrier as an exploration platform, however profits vs expenses sucks even with that job path. Exploration alone just can't effectively counter carrier costs. It becomes a credit grind, many hours investment is needed to just to break even. Carriers end up being a convenience tool with a high cost. They don't necessarily grant any core benefits.. and for elite, it is all about the credits and rate one can earn them. This "upgrade" goes counter to that fundamental mechanic

And I'm seeing a lot of these FCs act like busses too. You'll have one saying "departing for new borann in 10 minutes, lockdown in 5." So their presence is allowing newer players to get to and from the col sector, which in that area has almost no refuelable stars.

So eddb.io does show you what FCs are selling, but it is not a perfect system. I don't think it immediately tracks when FCs move as I could not locate some carriers listed in the system. In other cases I would get to the FC and find out that it had sold out of what I was looking for. Eventually I got so frustrated trying to chase down a few modules I went to a regular station anyway even though it was 5 jumps to get what I wanted.

I get a lot of the hate, but the PG I'm in is making great use of FCs in the current war we're in. allows us to use our large ships and restock in system despite there not being any stations with large pads. have a small or med ship on the FC to swap to for turning in massacre missions. I'm up to about the 400M mark in profit from this war and it's only been two days. FCs have helped keep that number high.

Find a popular mining spot. Park your carrier in orbit around it. Set landing permissions to open. Offer the various mining related modules (limpet controllers, rock honkers and so on) and of course LIMPETS at a modest markup. +1% maybe 2% markup at most. Offer 25% to 50% above galactic average for most everything worth mining out of that asteroid field. Many of the smaller miners are likely to accept your price(s) for the sake of convenience. The farther they have to jump to find a better price for their LTD's or Void Opals and such is the more risk they face of getting popped by a pirate.
Once or twice per week you can make a few runs with your Cutter to sell off whatever has been collected. Having that Cutter means you're safe from most if not all pirate activity. So you can afford to go the extra distance to get the better prices that are likely to be double or more what you paid.
Even if you only get a very few hundred LTD's in a week. That's more than enough to cover the upkeep on that carrier plus a bit.

I'm selling mine. I was excited to have one but the shipyard and components store ruined it for me. And the fact that despite NPCs landing at FCs, THEY BUY NOTHING! It's totally ridiculous! NPCs should buy some goddamned fuel! Or repairs! OR sell commodities to me. Not buy but at least sell. Then the package system. Fleet carriers have a VERY LIMITED amount of space when it comes to adding features. So in stead of allowing the players to customize what we SELL BY ITEM we have to sell useless crap in PACKAGES. It is inflating the prices enormously and the amount of space it takes up. I wanted to sell ONLY A rate parts and only the ones people actually use. You can't. Guess what, you can only sell about 2 packages (decent ones) multirole advanced ships and lets say cargo racks tier2 or 3. USELESS! Plus as yamiks said you can't advertise anything. I figured before they launched the feature they would add a galnet tab for FC advertising like your carrier name and services and it lists based on proximity to you.

  • @tanall5959
    @tanall5959 4 года назад

Theoretically, a carrier COULD be used for bulk trade. You take it to an origination system, load it up with commodities, take it to the destination system, unload it. The catch is, to make it worth the travel time, the two systems would need to be at least 2 jumps apart.
With Tritium trading the way it is right now, there is pretty much no point to this. HOWEVER, if and when tritium trading either gets nerfed or the bubble pops, this may be something worth trying.

Why do you even play this game? I'm not trying to call you out or anything, I'm just genuinely interested, what about this game appeals to you? I know Elite is far from perfect and I would like to change some things, but I also think it's a great game. I really enjoy doing the BGS work, being a part of a group with a goal, even powerplay, despite there not being much to it. I just love that your little actions can have an impact on an entire galaxy. And I love that you can just set out into the black whenever the mood strikes and have your name on stars on the other side of the galaxy. I don't find those things a grind, I enjoy doing them. Those things are the game. But some of my friends think this game is the most boring pile of garbage they ever spent money on. And I understand what they mean because Elite is a very niche game. It's just not for everybody.
And whenever I watch any other content creator, they complain about things as well, and they have their opinions and their criticisms, but for everyone else, I know why they play this game despite those criticisms. It's either combat, exploration, trading, BGS work, or whatever else. Everyone else has some sort of community around them and they work towards a common goal. And whenever I watch your stuff, I really can't tell what is it that you enjoy. You don't have a PMF, you don't do BGS, you don't do pve, or pvp, exploration is boring, mining is boring, you don't enjoy trying out new ship builds because engineering is a grind...
All I ever see you enjoy is complaining. Complaining for complaining's sake. I know that's your whole shtick, but when everything sucks and nothing is good, then really your opinion doesn't matter. Because as far as I can see this game just isn't for you. But maybe I'm wrong, so I just wanted to ask you, what about Elite do you enjoy? Not what you think is an objectively good game mechanic, that's not what I'm talking about. I want to know but what about Elite brings you actual joy while you are doing it.
And if there really isn't such a thing, if you really are playing just because it's your job, I get that, just maybe don't make it so obvious. Or you know at least try to have some fun. I mean you have 80k subscribers, if you cant create a community that's focused around something, then that's just sad.
Or I don't know, maybe just keep doing what you are doing, because what the fuck do I know, you seem to be doing great.
Well, that's all I had to say about that. I really didn't want this to be that long, but I just couldn't stop. So thanks a lot, you turned me into one of "those" people :/
