      Upkeep should be replaced with having to pay a fee to park your carrier in a busy system. The busier the system, the higher the fee. Uninhabited systems in the middle of nowhere would be free to park your carrier in. This deals with the congestion issue, while taking away all the harm that upkeep inflicts on explorers. Decommissioning should only happen to carriers left in a busy area that do not keep up with rent

      I don’t see what a casual player would even get out of this, so the point seems quite moot. This is only really something a hardcore invested player would ever utilise fully, and I don’t see everyone being handed a fleet carrier as being a good outcome either. as mentioned in video, you get your 5bil back if your carrier get decommisioned. Max debt is 250mil which isn't that much when you consider how much you can make per hour. Not to mentioned max upkeep per week is only 25mil. Might be a lot for new player but for anyone with at least Asp explorer, it's not really that much as long as you play the game. And if you don't play, why do you need a carrier?

    • @YodaWasSith
      @YodaWasSith 3 года назад +1

      @@Mithguar Exactly, it balances itself out. I can see some casuals getting pissed because they can't reach the content made for people who are willing to work for it (Of which there are tens of thousands already in possession of a capital ship) but...the game wasn't made for them. It was made for the 11,000 people who met up in a system this week with their cap ships and solved what should have been a week long mystery in 6 hours, digging through over 4,700 systems.
      Plus, if you're smart enough to make any significant amounts of money in this game, you can easily walk away with over 300 mil in profit every single day. Or more, depending on what ship you're using. By my calculations, that's enough for 12 weeks of downtime.

    I still don't understand Upkeep, I mean you owe someone for buying a fleet carrier? it's not 100% yours then. I would understand it if instead of debt the services would just stop working and the fleet carrier itself would shutdown. That's more logical, you don't owe anyone but people working on your carrier will no longer do so because you don't pay them for the services they're providing. But that mean you're carrier will not get decomissioned and therefore is yours, even if it's a piece of metal parts wandering through space, shut down.

    #1 they require upkeep and as such you are forced to log in to keep the carrier. This was a dealbreaker for many people with a regular life that can't spend hours in game just to pay the upkeep, and play once in a while. You don't lose your anaconda if you don't play a month; which is an end game ship that you paid and saved to get, so why should you lose your carrier? I see a lot of people getting SUPER pissed about FC running costs, but it seems like they don't do their research. You can accumulate 250 million credits total debt. It costs 5 million credits per week to operate a completely unmodified, fresh-out-of-the-factory FC. That's 50 _weeks_ before it faces decommissioning, plus an additional week that you have at the end to pay off the debt; that's 51 weeks. A full, complete year is 52 weeks. You can essentially have an unmodified Fleet Carrier for a full year without paying anything except the initial 5 billion credits.

    basically if you want to do a deep space exploration with all your ships, you still need to earn money to transfer and pay it, thus you need to have 1 account with a medium cargo ship (Python) to stay behind as you will not be able to go along on the journey as you must remain behind and pay the bills. Then have a second account to that will travel with the carrier....... thats what I picked up from this video.

  • @KalenTomlinson
    @KalenTomlinson 4 года назад +2

    I had a few ideas for them..
    For buffing exploration, I was hoping maybe to help with travel times, you could eventually warp to Fleet carriers and send a bunch into deep space for world records or to setup fuel rat bases or something lol
    My other idea was trying to setup a fleet carrier specifically designed for charity for new players.
    Have it be stationed right outside Noob space and basically have a setup where players that have been playing since the beginning can give back to the noob community joining in on Odyssey.
    Or maybe give new players a goal??
    Have a fleet carrier full of low temperature diamonds selling for cheap but have it move constantly outside the bubble like a merchant ship.
    Might be fun for the roleplaying aspects? But I hope they add more FC styles/classes and I'm curious what the livery customization will look like?

      Haha if there's an endgame player that did it to me, seeing them owning such a massive beast and selling me one of the most expensive stuff for cheap, I'd definitely be interested in reaching that point and do the same. :D
      But the upkeep is a dealbreaker for me. I'd wanna own it, not rent it.

    • @KalenTomlinson
      @KalenTomlinson 4 года назад

      @@zephyrerazortail5478
      Yeah if you're doing it for charity you would be renting it, but in order to sell Commodities the right way, FC's should be setup so basically it'll be paying for itself or even make huge profits, but that would take some planning and knowledge that I feel most players (including me) probably don't have.
      most players just look up online what the best places are to go anyway.
      I figure even after the release they're still going to need some changes and updates as we go on.
      Odyssey looks like it'll add fun gameplay loops and hopefully better ways to make money and that won't be an issue in the future.. I'll just keep complaining till they fix it lol

  • @1SevenCirclesDesign

    Have said this in another ObsidianAnt's video but I want to expand a little. The upkeeps and prices were ridiculous at the beginning but now they seem a lot more reasonable; I find it funny that there are people willing to mine out 5 billion credits but unwilling to secure their FC for months with a couple hundred million. Some comments point towards despawning your FC after some inactive time so you can have it back when you return, isnt this what decomission already does? It despawns your FC and you get your money back. True you will have to go back to the bubble to get a new one but it starts to seem to me like people want to have their FC along with modules, storage and ships in some pocket dimension that you can carry around your current ship and just pop it out wherever you are, that sounds quite exploitable for me to be honest.

      @@deckardcain9789 Unless you've paid both off in full (i.e. no mortgage or financed car payments) then no, you don't own them, the bank/finance company does. Even then, you have to pay property taxes yearly to keep the government from taking your house, and you have insurance on everything as well to stay legal.
      So in reality, no private citizen really owns anything, especially when you toss in eminent domain, or civil forfeiture. This is in the USA, I'm not sure how it works in other countries from a legal standpoint, but thanks to international banking standards and the way most governments run their tax systems it's a safe bet to assume most Western industrialized nations don't actually grant full ownership rights of property to any private citizen.

    The upkeep mechanic is the main reason why I'm not trying to buy one of these. I think it is rather ridiculous when video games do this. I feel it is a cheap mechanic to encourage players to play. Personally, I think the upkeep should be calculated on usage rather than a weekly charge. For example, I play Stranded Deep and using the tools causes them to break. In which you have to gather resources to make new ones and that mechanic makes you think about how to best use them. Fleet Carriers should only inter upkeep when you use them to jump to other systems and the distance determines how much upkeep is needed. Players could then choose to pay the upkeep at each jump or wait until they jump a few times (much like we do with fuel on our smaller ships...using fuel scoops or paying for fuel). If a player owns a Carrier and doesn't use it, then it just sits there not requiring upkeep.
    After all, this is a video game and players shouldn't be punished for not playing. Frankly, given the upkeep, Frontier should have just left the Carrier as a fleet only ship and not allow individuals to buy it, as it is not a friendly mechanic for casual, solo/friends only players. Getting rid of a weekly upkeep and changing it to a "by usage" upkeep would make much more sense.
