    It's nice to see that a sense of scale for these ships was important to someone other than me. The only reason I picked up Odyssey was so that I could get it and walk around my ships, kick the landing gear as it were. And thank you tons for including the panther clipper! Here's hoping for 2022 it drops in the game. It was after all mentioned on galnet as a possible for this year.

    One thing I've grown to dislike about Elite's ship design since watching one of the older ship scale comparison videos, is how huge some of the cockpits are.
    Especially on something like the Lakon ships. It makes the ships look way smaller than they actually are, because you expect the cockpits to be roughly human sized.

    • @MJRSoap
      @MJRSoap 2 года назад +13

      Makes even less sense when you remember that A-Grav isnt a thing in Elite, while a wide open cockpit isnt a death sentence in zero g, still really inconvenient if you get stuck away from the walls or handhold. No reason for the cockpits to be so tall, the exploration ships makes sense for the canopy to be HUGE, but no so tall you could stand 3 people ontop of each other and still not touch the ceiling.

    I know it's too late for now, but you are missing the larger variant to the Ocellus/Orbis station. Two HAB rings, cargo area, and its LONG. So long that if you drop into the instance behind it, you have a real chance of either hitting it or being INSIDE the rear section. Gotta be upwards of 7km in length.

    From a cockpit, you never really notice how large Thargoid ships are. And then with this you realise that in overall scale, a Thargoid scout is larger than any small ships despite technically being a small ship itself, and a Thargoid interceptor is just the largest overall size ship there is (not counting cargo ships, interdictors, battle cruisers, and fleet carriers). Obviously Thargoid ships are not as large lengthwise but that's because their ships are designed radially instead of streamlined like human ships.

    This is a beautiful video, I loved the music, it's a very well-made comparison with beautiful models and presentation. I did notice something about the ships themselves that confuses me, and it's due to the game's creators, not Mat. Most of these ships have glassed-in 'cockpits' the size of large rooms, and it really throws off the sense of scale... especially considering they are all fairly small 'single pilot' cockpits in-game. The Scarab through the Condor have 'reasonably' sized cockpits, based on the amount of 'glass' visible, but starting with the Taipan the 'glass' shown is increasingly oversized compared to any useful amount of cockpit space... and all much larger than the 'actual' cockpits you pilot from in the game.
    The Viper is an excellent example of this, showing the Space Shuttle above it, which has a five-person flight deck in a smaller space than the Viper's glassed-in cockpit... which in-game holds a single pilot comfortably, with little room to spare. Among the larger ships, the Panther Clipper is the only one to have an exterior glassed-in volume appropriately scaled to the in-game cockpit volumes. The Lakon Type 7 Transporter is especially egregious in this respect, having a very distinctive exterior glassed-in area that is at least five meters tall, three wide, and three deep, with the volume of at least forty-five cubic meters... the size of a large living room... which in-game is represented as a tall-ish single-pilot cockpit of perhaps three by two by two meters (12 cubic meters, about 1/4 the size it appears in the external view)... the size of a large closet.

    • @brucel337
      @brucel337 2 года назад

      In VR, the Viper's cockpit appears larger than on screen (same with other ships), but at some point during the production, ship scale must've been adjusted retroactively for some obscure reason.

    The banana size is debatable, and we have not seen the measurements in banana numbers! 🤣
    Only thing I would change on the video is the spotlight time on each ship from 2 seconds to 4, that aside, still gets my thumbs up. 👍

    Sometimes I truly miss playing ED. Getting stoned and rolling out in my suped’ up Orca; picking up dignitaries and stupidly rich tourists and jetting them across the bubble into dangerous; often times nefarious situations. Bringing them home alive “and unscanned” and getting me filthy fucking rich. But alas; console has been abandoned. O7 commanders; it was a pleasure out there with you…

    I know this is the definitive version, but if you ever do an update I'd love to see some of those weird floaty space things in here - the alien mollusc space-whale thing, especially, but also the big crystal spike thingies. You could also add those Thargoid cities/bases/whatever they are. Awesome video as-is, though.

    5:05 Holy Shit that thing is MASSIVE, its so big it could have its own Hangar Bay but for small ships instead of Fighters...getting that through the mailslot will be 99% impossible...

      its a chonker alright! but just fits the slot and more importantly, just fits the landing pad and lift.

    • @Neo-vz8nh
      @Neo-vz8nh 2 года назад +1

      @@preferredimage The Panther looks highly detailed, and consistent with the landing pad and mail slot size, so it is the biggest possible build that can enter and land. It looks very realistic. Is it a fanart, or do you have "source"? :)

    • @preferredimage
      @preferredimage  2 года назад +3

      @@Neo-vz8nh Oh its a kitbash by me. made from mostly T9, T10 and T6 parts. There's a hint of vulture in there if you look closely! Its about as big a volume as you can get into the ship dock which is kinda what the panther was. A massive shipping container with an engine.

    • @Neo-vz8nh
      @Neo-vz8nh 2 года назад

      @@preferredimage Yes, it is the size of the L landing pad, maximising its area, the exact size which i imagined. Very nice work. It would be kinda cool if the real Panther would be like similar. I just hoped there is some source or leak, that would show that it is coming. :)
