One thing I've grown to dislike about Elite's ship design since watching one of the older ship scale comparison videos, is how huge some of the cockpits are. Especially on something like the Lakon ships. It makes the ships look way smaller than they actually are, because you expect the cockpits to be roughly human sized.
Makes even less sense when you remember that A-Grav isnt a thing in Elite, while a wide open cockpit isnt a death sentence in zero g, still really inconvenient if you get stuck away from the walls or handhold. No reason for the cockpits to be so tall, the exploration ships makes sense for the canopy to be HUGE, but no so tall you could stand 3 people ontop of each other and still not touch the ceiling.

So long that if you drop into the instance behind it, you have a real chance of either hitting it or being INSIDE the rear section. Gotta be upwards of 7km in length.

Battleships are also mentioned in the game - they are larger than battlecruisers and are capable of striking planets, but they are not represented in the game, not even a concept.
I love these videos so much, have been seeing them evolve over the years. I quite like the Panther Clipper design concept, except I feel the cockpit should be at the top - a little like the Anaconda in style. The original Panther Clipper had that royal balcony view...
I was thinking about this series a few days ago. Specifically wanted to see how fleet carriers compare, and damn, the Drake is larger than I thought! Expected the capital ships to be bigger. Great stuff.
That it is absolutely amazing. I cannot comprehend how much time and effort went into the making of that video, but, I do appreciate you doing it. Cheers.
From a cockpit, you never really notice how large Thargoid ships are. And then with this you realise that in overall scale, a Thargoid scout is larger than any small ships despite technically being a small ship itself, and a Thargoid interceptor is just the largest overall size ship there is (not counting cargo ships, interdictors, battle cruisers, and fleet carriers). Obviously Thargoid ships are not as large lengthwise but that's because their ships are designed radially instead of streamlined like human ships.
Incredible work! I've loved the previous size comparisons, and even though there really haven't been any new ships to compare, I loved seeing size comparisons between larger constructions like fleet carriers and outposts!

This is a beautiful video, I loved the music, it's a very well-made comparison with beautiful models and presentation. I did notice something about the ships themselves that confuses me, and it's due to the game's creators, not Mat. Most of these ships have glassed-in 'cockpits' the size of large rooms, and it really throws off the sense of scale... especially considering they are all fairly small 'single pilot' cockpits in-game. The Scarab through the Condor have 'reasonably' sized cockpits, based on the amount of 'glass' visible, but starting with the Taipan the 'glass' shown is increasingly oversized compared to any useful amount of cockpit space... and all much larger than the 'actual' cockpits you pilot from in the game. The Viper is an excellent example of this, showing the Space Shuttle above it, which has a five-person flight deck in a smaller space than the Viper's glassed-in cockpit... which in-game holds a single pilot comfortably, with little room to spare. Among the larger ships, the Panther Clipper is the only one to have an exterior glassed-in volume appropriately scaled to the in-game cockpit volumes. The Lakon Type 7 Transporter is especially egregious in this respect, having a very distinctive exterior glassed-in area that is at least five meters tall, three wide, and three deep, with the volume of at least forty-five cubic meters... the size of a large living room... which in-game is represented as a tall-ish single-pilot cockpit of perhaps three by two by two meters (12 cubic meters, about 1/4 the size it appears in the external view)... the size of a large closet.
In VR, the Viper's cockpit appears larger than on screen (same with other ships), but at some point during the production, ship scale must've been adjusted retroactively for some obscure reason.
I love these comparison videos! I hope you will find the time to do another one at the end of the year with the four new ships, the Scythe and Glaive and of course the Titan included 🙂
