      All ships look good at first glance from afar, but as soon as you take a closer look they start falling apart quite quickly.
      And it’s kind of obvious that all ships have been heavily rescaled after the design was already finalised. It’s literally a bunch of single-seater fighter jets blown up to the size of a cargo plane.
      Let’s not even start talking about all the clipping issues... or none of the designs actually being functional. (Maybe the Anaconda would work)

    In VR one often wonders why the cockpits are so ridiculously oversized, this really hammers that trend home, many of these ships looks like they could land on top of a small house and not crush it. If you imagine a suitable clearance under the ship to be no more than 2 meters to allow for reasonably easy maintenance access these ships seems to be... I'd say between 2 to 3 times the size they SHOULD be. That also seems to fit in with the equally oversized stairs, ladders and handholds.

      I always found the cockpits ridiculously oversized, and I don’t even have VR.
      It looks like they were modeled at a certain size then they just re-scaled them. It’s probably why we have no ship interiors, since it’s all hacked and duct-taped.

    • @FiliusFidelis
      @FiliusFidelis 3 года назад

      @@edgepixel8467 haha yeah exactly, in many ships, especially the Faulcon Delacy ones, if you look around it really looks like proper "dashboards" with room under for the feet and stuff. And at some point, probably when they came up with the one size fits all pilot chairs they just left it like that.

  • @SomeOne-vf1rs
    @SomeOne-vf1rs 3 года назад +3

    It’s weird everyone’s saying these ships are far too big when today we have cruise ships and cargo ships that rival the biggest of these ships. A lot of the proportions are absolutely horrendous yes, but I don’t think having giant ships is a bad thing since most of what you’re doing is dealing with cargo in low to 0G environments, you’ll need a lot of space for everything, otherwise they’d probably be pretty underwhelming.

      One thing im affraid of, most ships would have copy-pasted interiors as well...

    • @FrazzleCat
      @FrazzleCat 3 года назад +1

      @@cold_ultra You would likely see standardized interiors based on the manufacturer. Not that FDev will ever do interiors of course, but Gutamaya would have certain hallways / walls, Saud Kruger their style and so on. It cuts down on the work load and it make sense. For example the 'Conda can have wires showing around the ship but that would never happen in a Cutter. Customization would likely only exist in a sleeping area or maybe an observation deck, although you may be limited to certain themes like stations. That'd be kind of lame, but a little better than nothing.

    This does raise some interesting questions about the idea of NPC crews vs the role of automation from an in-universe perspective.
    For example, the Anaconda (155m long x 62m wide x 32m tall) is comparable in size to the modern US Navy's Zumwalt-class destroyers (190m long x 24.6m wide x 66 meters tall), the latter of which requires a crew of 130 to operate while the former can be effectively operated by a single crewmember.
    Are the ships in-universe just so heavily automated that even large vessels, which could/would likely require over 100 crewmembers if built with current, modern technology (aside from the powerplant and propulsion systems), somply don't need a modern crew complement? Or, is there a team of NPC crewmembers toiling away on the other side of the bulkhead, and every ship destruction results in casting many NPC lives into the void (similar to the lore of EVE Online, where the larger ships do have significant "baseliner" crews, while the Capsuleer essentially acts as the captain of the vessel)?

    One thing that has always bugged me about the ship design is how much wasted space there is in so many of the cockpits. You could fit 10 more passengers in the space reserved for the pilot on the dolphin or a couple more tonnes of cargo on the hauler and that's not even including living space or, as far as we know, any practical systems access.
