Never understood people who ran out of gas in that game. Like, it really couldnt be much easier, the stuff is free, it's everywhere, there's a gauge on your HUD. I really worry for the next few years of humanity when people are struggling with games such a E:D.

I work with most ES (Fire, EMS, police, CD and relay to municipal and social services if needed). All i can say is that there are all kind of people on all sides, cops tend to be the most jaded and burned out type at least in the area i work, i hate the lack of compromise and effort of an important part of them but on the other side i know first hand that it's not easy bypassing the corruption or enduring the hardships of the job without any kind of support (psych leave or support is a stain on your file and could avoid you from acquiring a higher rank). I've also known EMS guys that don't give a fuck about people and might leave a dead body on the streets because their shift ends in 10 minutes, although you see it a bit less of those kinds of people in medical. All in all, the thing that made me happy is the way that these guys are able to coordinate so well and their willingness to help, as a dispatcher i wished that all the people that work in ES would have that kind of disposition towards their vocation (and a big part of them have it still).
The fact that this faction is completely fan made, has an actual purpose, and is an essential part of both the universe and gameplay for a lot of players is just awesome.
Hutton Orbital Truckers Co-Op is another player faction that's permanently embedded in both the lore and the community. People love that .22ly journey so much, and honestly why not? Everyone who's made the trip can brag that they flew from Alpha Centauri to Proxima Centauri. I do think Hutton Orbital should offer a free mug cockpit decoration for everyone that lands there. That might require FDev add cupholders to ships, though.
Reminds me of EVE University, a player faction in EVE Online that acts as an actual in-game university that teaches new players, supplies them with resources, and so on. According to their website, they've had over 25.000 students in almost 20 years.
this is the kind of stuff that makes multiplayer fun and i wish more devs and publishers enabled this kind of content more since it keeps players wanting to play
A friend of mine once told me that he knew of a case of someone calling a Fuel Rat just to kill them and the community decided on their own to find the culprit and give him a good bullying.
what's better is socially engineering a war between the fuel rats and a non existent enemy attack one of their ships and wait for the backup to arrive only to have 10 friends in engineered ships waste the backup effortlessly nobody in this game should be off limits

I let my wife fly my newest ship, the Cobra MKIII, back in the day. We got so carried away in the fun that I forgot to peek at our fuel. Anyway, we ran out one jump from home and that's when the dilema set in. We had to self destruct. She was devastated. I knew about the Rats but didn't want to waste their time. Besides, I had a rebuy. I mentioned the Rats to her and she said, please please call them, so of course I did. They saved our lives, and our time together. She was delighted! (so was I). It was one of the most pleasant experiences I've had in the game and I am now over 3000 hours since then. Thank you Fuel Rats for an unforgetable hour with my sweetheart. Long live the Rats!
@@SRNF Amazing deduction skills, sir. Please do tell, what gave it away? Was it when she enjoyed her time together with her husband flying through space in a game? Or perhaps when she wanted to call real people to rescue some pixels in a game just so her husband doesn't have to spend virtual money? I am greatly amazed by your genius.
My first ever time playing Elite Dangerous; I traveled too far and ran out of fuel. Not knowing what to do, I googled a way to get out of my situation. Sure enough, I found the Fuel Rats. I contacted them, gave them my Coords, and with the hour, they came to me and fueled me back up. I thought it was the coolest experience.
Same thing happened to me man, was years ago and it's still fresh in my mind. Fucking awesome guys, who will forever have my utmost respect in this game.
It's really interesting how much this resembles being a paramedic. You sit around, waiting for something to happen (watching shows, talking with colleagues), until you get an alarm from dispatch, get in your car, drive to the sometimes vague location (could be also a code red with someone dying) to help. And a lot of people who do that are also volunteers.
This just happened to me today. I started playing the vanilla version a couple of weeks ago, trying to do as much as I could by myself. I quickly realized that exploration was going to be my big first passion, that’s what I was looking for in this game from the start anyway. Just yesterday I could afford my first asp explorer. Very quickly the realization of the huge distances that were possible to traverse in such haste in this ship took me way too much by surprise. I set out to explore the entire Pleiades (worth about 3million in cartographics). After I finished exploring my fuel tank was still more than half full. I said what the hell, and set off instantly to the dark Taurus region. I never bothered to check if there were populated areas close by. There weren’t any. I realized this with terror when I had almost no fuel. I didn’t have a fuel scoop mind you (I know, I’m an idiot). I checked the web in panic and saw a 5 year old post about having to self destruct. I was heartbroken. My new ship and all the information about one of my favorite areas would be lost. Then I saw the fuel rats page, and contacted them. It was one of the most surreal experiences calling people I didn’t know from my phone to inside my game. Two rats came, their attitude and patience was amazing. I had never had a conversation with an actual person in-game. The fuel they were carrying wasn’t enough though so one left and the other one literally escorted me to the nearest populated system, charging more fuel for me on the way. He gave me a lot of advise and it was such a beautiful moment. He told me to never doubt contacting them when in danger, to not give up on exploration because of the incident, to get a fuel scoop and we chatted a bit about different ships. Then I asked what I could repay them with, and he told me they do it out of pleasure. My heart, much like the Grinch’s, quadrupled in size. When I was safe and cozy inside a hangar, he bid me farewell and good luck. My head was still racing, I thought I was going to lose everything because I had no more money, and now here I was, safe with my ship and all my info. I’ll never forget this. Never would’ve imagined that such selfless people would exist. Long Live the Rats. This game is so awesome.
It feels pretty great to help people out. Especially new players. I'd recommend anyone who's getting a little bored with the game to give ratting a shot, it's a ton of fun. Also you get a cool Fuel Rat decal after 10 rescues :-)

You could make the argument they do it because it makes them feel helpful and needed therefor happy which is very well a "selfish" incentive. However I guess we can all agree that this is probably the absolute best incentive to have and nothing to be criticed but rather be cheered up for.
@@BackfeetBoi I mean, how different is it from millionaires funding parks or libraries in order to get their name put on it? They spend money on something that helps their community in order to gain a sense of importance, that they were the ones to help people, and to get their name plastered on the building. It is by no means a bad thing for them to do this, but the motivation isn't totally selfless. Being the best rat may be the motivation for some fuel rat volunteers, and that's not a bad thing because the result is them working hard to help people. Whether the goal is to help or get famous is irrelevant to the poor soul who almost lost his mining run or exploration data to the void around a star that can't be scooped
The fuel rats seem a sadly unique case in video games.....players who choose to exist in the game purely to help others for no reward other than the deed itself. They remind me that, even among the notoriously toxic community of online gamers, there are good people out there.
Off the top of my head I know of at least one other example. Funnily enough it is also a space-themed game: Eve Online has the 'Signal Cartel' which will attempt to rescue you if you get stuck in wormhole space without scanning equipment for instance. There are also anti-ganking efforts in Eve, with people interfering with ganking efforts to protect victims.
I remember hearing about something that happened in WoW where a kind of virus, which was only meant for a high level late game area, escaped that area due to a bug and thousands of low level players were constantly dying because they didn‘t have enough HP to survive. Ro counteract this, some noble souls started going around as healers searching these low level infected people and just constantly healed them until the „virus“ was gone. It wasn‘t of course as organized and long lasting as the fuel rats but i think it shill shows that some communities just want everyone to have a nice time playing the game.
In the old City of Heroes MMO, the Taxibots were a group of amazing players who had characters with teleport abilities, letting them yank lowbies out of hazard zones they'd wandered into by mistake or simply help folks get from point A to point B without having to slog through all the (sometimes painful) stuff in between.

I just started playing this game a few days ago and I can’t actually believe there is a group of people, volunteers, who traverse the universe like guardian angels saving people stranded in the darkest part of the galaxy.
Started the game Today! And this video has inspired me to seek out their tutelage and become a rescuer from my humble rags, I hope to bring others their riches safe and sound back home with them someday.
"Cheerful reactions of rescued clients transcends language barriers" This is definitely right. One of my first few missions as a fuel rat was actually around the 45KLy mark, which I then proceeded to do a 100KLy journey back to the bubble afterwards lmao; but it felt good, rescuing someone stranded that far away. The amount of relief and gratitude the commander expressed was felt in a way that follows what you said. I hope he is doing well. Long live the fuel rats!

I play with a corp in EVE called "EVE Scout". We do almost this exact thing for players stuck in wormholes (where the map turns off). I've started dabbling in ED, and found out about this group, and it makes me happy to see that same ethos here as well. Best of luck!
He can get a channel now that he found something that can get views, there would be at least some interest for him to document his rescues and doing more in-depth guides of the process. Downloaded the game yesterday, stranded myself. And looked up what to do. Found the fuel rats and reached out. That is a sensational video sir - the best Fuel Rat documentary I've ever seen and quite probably one of the best Elite: Dangerous documentaries full stop. As one of the very early "old school" Fuel Rats who's met Surly Badger on a number of occasions (but alas is now severely lapsed in his Fuel Rat duties) I just wanted to salute you sir! I love that whole new generations of Fuel Rats have come and gone over the years and that you're still being inspired to create things like this. Long live the Fuel Rats! o7 P.S. I'll see if I can get word to Surly to come and watch this for himself!
I remember I once ran out of fuel when rendevousing with my friend but ran out of fuel so he goes dont worry ill come get you but also ran out of fuel. In a panic I just started Googling I came across these heroes and they saved me and taught myself and friend a few things and it was such an immersive anf wholesome experience in any game the guy was so cool. I don't remember your name and I'm sure in just another case but maybe you'll see this, thank you for saving this panicking voyager.
Not long after I started the game, I convinced a friend to join as well. She ran out of fuel on the edge of the bubble. So, I grabbed a limpet controller, and headed out her way. Got to her, popped 2 limpets of fuel to her, and on the third limpet, I got a mauve adder, and crashed out of the game. When I got back, my FULL 32 ton fuel tank, was empty, and I still had that 3rd limpet. The fuel rats came and rescued the rescuer. I've been a fan of them since.
I was rescured by them once, a code red. I overestimated how far I could go and got stranded just 5Mm from the station where I wanted to fuel up. Luckily I read up on the proper procedures just beforehand and logged out even before calling for help. They managed to get to me with about 4 seconds to go. That was quite scary, but I'm very happy to have been rescued and that people like the fuel rats exist.
Once I was mining and not looking at my fuel, I flew around and all of the sudden my engines went off. I was first confused, until I noticed, that I'm out of fuel. I had already some mining stuff loaded. I called the fuel rats and two guys helped me, but also pirates came and scanned me. That was funny, the fuel rats had no weapons, and I had no fuel, they had to refill me and then I could defend my self with two laser beams xD
Speaking as one of those who tried to learn Elite years ago and basically dropped out for the overwhelmedness of it all, these kinds of emergent gameplay stories are absolutely captivating - thanks for this window into the experience!
That's a shame. Seems to be a common trend of new players getting overwhelmed, which is understandable. It's a big galaxy. What was it that was overwhelming specifically? I had the same experience when I first tried Elite too. It was the combat tutorial that had me thinking that. But really, that tutorial is just WAY too unbalanced for a player that is new to flight sims. I eventually just skipped it and jumped into the game not knowing what I was doing. Now it's my all-time favorite game :) I think you should give the game another try. Don't worry if you're no good at it. We all started from the same place. Just do what YOU want to do. Even if it's just flying around in your starter ship exploring the same star system you spawned in, then just gradually introduce yourself to more things. Best thing to do is probably just focus on flying, taking off, and landing, then jumping between star systems, then introduce yourself to the mission board incrementally.
I've had the pleasure of being rescued by the Fuel Rats in the past. This is a great documentary that faithfully portraits how it went when they had fuel, and I didn't. It really is that simple, and there lies all its beauty and glory.
Once I learn my way around the game, I plan to become a Fuel Rat. I admit that I'm not great at dog fights and exploration/mining just isn't something that interests me. But I would love to volunteer to help those in need of rescue.
I've never been saved by a fuel rat yet but I guess I've performed a rescue. I just happened to have fuel limpets by accident in my type 10 and saw a guy posting in my system hes out of fuel. Got him filled and on his way and didn't think much about it until this
i watched this video close to when it came out and it literally changed my life. this video inspired me to become a rat, and i did. i now have quite a few rescues under my belt and have spent countless hours playing as a result from it and it's become a very large part of my life. i just want to say thank you because this video is a really important one to me as it resulted in so much in my life. i come back to watch it from time to time just because i really enjoy it and now feel a sense honor with being represented along side my friends in the fuelrats in such a light and i hope to continue helping the rats shine bright as the years go on.
When I first heard of the fuel rats I thought they were a group tat stole fuel in a sneaky evasive way, since rats tend to do that. Glad I got the fact straight before actually encountering one.
Good that you got the facts straight. Cause killing a rat can cause epic grudges by the non rat players. They would hunt a player and send him/her to the rebuy screen 4 or 5 times. You dont kill a rat!
Rats are also highly social and intelligent. In the wild they work together to solve tasks, and will even babysit the offspring of other rats in their colony.
I've watched this video a few times, and I just have to commend you on how well written this is. Your script flows well from point to point, you avoid unnecessary detail for a wider audience but still keep dedicated players interested, and the video never feels repetitive or dull. Well done! Every time i come back to this video i think about joining the rats. Maybe someday
This. Sounds. AWESOME!!!! I'm a trucker and I'd love this type of job. I don't play this game yet, but this sounds exactly like something I'd want to do!
Great documentary :) highly accurate on how we do things and why. its always about doing the best we can, and that's led us to the Standard Operating Procedure. It can seem like its very rule based, and strict but its because the SOP is genuinely, in almost all cases, the best way to do things. And when it's not... we change it so that it is :) Thanks for making this!
Much respect, I've never needed your services but it's reassuring to know you're there. :) About that SOP, I saw another comment from someone who needed rescuing from a mining zone, and the rat didn't have weapons. Any time you drop into a mining zone it's going to summon pirates that will scan your client. That might need to be considered. Just a thought. Have a nice day and good luck!
I started playing this game a week ago and just ran out of fuel last night and had to call these guys, they got to me in literally just a few minutes! It was crazy awesome!
I had to call upon them recently. The galaxy map sent me down a path with zero fuel stars and I didn't notice until it was too late. They told me that I could tell the map only to vector me through systems with fuel stars and offered to show me - I was in a rush to catch up with friends for AX hunting, so I resolved to look it up later, but was gushing in my gratitude to them. They were an invaluable source of help, but for them it was just Tuesday. This video went a long way to helping me understand why.
There's also the hull seals! They do repairs out in space, so if a critical module breaks, and you can't do anything, they'll drop by and fix you up, much in the same vein as the Rats
I was a Rat a couple years ago - got 12 rescues and 10 assists - and at the time it was the main thing that made E:D any fun for me. I’ve been out of the game for quite a while, but this excellent video has made me nostalgic. Well done. :-)
I just started playing Elite Dangerous and I absolutely love everything about it and seeing that people like the Fuel Rats are always there to help makes me feel even more comfortable about going even deeper into space
That's super! Absolutely! This restores a part of my faith in humanity, and random people on the internet. I can relate to the problem that alterNERDtive mentions, of having no meanigful goal in a game. However, I could really see myself enjoying ratting, if I ever actually get in to Elite. Conducting coordinated rescue missions of actual human players would definitely be more compelling than any NPC interaction or job posting.
Things like this are what restore my faith in the gaming community. This is the true potential of multiplayer sandbox games - a group of complete strangers coming together to create something wonderful and original, almost by accident.
This gives me faith in humanity. Why ? Because there are people willing to help, for nothing in return, even in video games. And for that, the Fuel Rats have my absolute respect.
I returned to ED after a 5 year hiatus. Third mission run and I pulled a n00b (forgot to clear non-scoopable scars from my path). That's when I found the Fuel Rats. My hat's off to them, great people and I wish them all well. Thank you GD, for giving them such a wonderful review.
I still remember the first time I asked for help from the Fuel Rats. The experience was so much more than a gaming experience, having a group of 3 total strangers come to my aid in a virtual galaxy was one of the most wholesome experiences Ive honestly had just in general.
great video! on my run in with the fuel rats (ran out not too far but out of the bubble), i felt like i was dealing with more professional people, than on the run ins i had with the police (as a witness of course;) really a quite unique gaming experience.
alterNERDtive it was difficult for me, but then again..I only had one practise run before I headed out for my first trip to Beagle and I’ve pretty much forgotten about my brief life in the Rat community since then
I am brand new to the game and got caught low on fuel in some random star system in my bone stock Sidewinder. I was really amazed at how quick the Fuel Rat got to me. Seemed damn near instantaneous on my end. It's great to see how it all works. Thanks for the vid.
I just bought Elite Dangerous on Steam yesterday, haven't even downloaded it yet, been perusing the internet for guides and the like, and I came across this video. The Fuel Rats have literally restored my faith in humanity.
I was 10 hours into my game when I used the fuel rats. Coincidentally I had just learned of them the day before. What a fun experience it was. I aspire to join them once I have more game experience under my belt. Thanks for this upload!
I cant say enough, praisewise, about a community whose enjoyment is the fact that they helped ppl! Just amazing. Hope I dont ever have to yell at them, but it's so nice to know they are out there because they have fuel and you dont...

(so was I). Happened to me last week almost exactly. Showed up in like 5 mins. Wild experience to have.
Damn this brings tears to my eyes. Just started playing

Partly because not many games have mechanics that allow for this to happen.

Yeah, any time a player drops into a mining zone it summons pirates. Their arrival probably triggered it. I wonder if they consider that in the SOP.
Now it's my all-time favorite game :)
I think you should give the game another try.

The fuel rats saved my ass yesterday, I’m thankful for these lads
When I first heard of the fuel rats I thought they were a group tat stole fuel in a sneaky evasive way, since rats tend to do that.
Glad I got the fact straight before actually encountering one.
It’s closer to the usage of, “gym rat,” where rat sort of implies you’re always around
Love seeing the humility and heart behind such a group in the back drop of things.

I've watched this video a few times, and I just have to commend you on how well written this is. It's very fun. And even when you are not currently ratting you can take some long haul shipping routes to make some cash
This really reminds me of descriptions of EMS/Firefighter experiences.
I also thank You again for saving my brand-new Python :) That ship is still in my hangar, as a museum exhibition item after farming my Conda with it.
I started playing this game a week ago and just ran out of fuel last night and had to call these guys, they got to me in literally just a few minutes! It was crazy awesome!
Its 2024 and this small group of people still help pilots who are stranded without fuel.
Amazing.
Never heard of this game but be a online gamer for years. After watching I now have more faith in people and a smile on my face. Thatlnk you
I don't even play this game (yet) but the spirit of adventure and cooperation has brought tears to my eyes
Got saved by the fuel rats today!! Awesome group and surprisingly professional!!!!!
This has to be the one of the most wholesome things in gaming ever.
Well, this is a reason to play again. Fuel Rats, here I come! I can't wait to fly 1000's of LY's to refuel someone.
How did the Fuel Rats go?
I was a Rat a couple years ago - got 12 rescues and 10 assists - and at the time it was the main thing that made E:D any fun for me. I’ve been out of the game for quite a while, but this excellent video has made me nostalgic. Well done. :-)
Glad to see Peter Kropotkin's "Mutual Aid" and "Conquest of Bread" in action
I just started playing Elite Dangerous and I absolutely love everything about it and seeing that people like the Fuel Rats are always there to help makes me feel even more comfortable about going even deeper into space
That's super! Absolutely! This restores a part of my faith in humanity, and random people on the internet.
I can relate to the problem that alterNERDtive mentions, of having no meanigful goal in a game. However, I could really see myself enjoying ratting, if I ever actually get in to Elite. Conducting coordinated rescue missions of actual human players would definitely be more compelling than any NPC interaction or job posting.
Dudes are absolute legends, the advice they give is invaluable
Things like this are what restore my faith in the gaming community. This is the true potential of multiplayer sandbox games - a group of complete strangers coming together to create something wonderful and original, almost by accident.
This gives me faith in humanity. Why ? Because there are people willing to help, for nothing in return, even in video games. And for that, the Fuel Rats have my absolute respect.
What a beautiful thing, to have a group like this, helping people just for the sake of helping. I might have to look into it. This sounds rewarding.
This actually makes me want to start playing the game and join the fuel rats!
"The Universe pays us..." What a beautiful sentiment.
To be fair, I imagine being a fuel rat must be quite a lot less complicated than being a police officer :)
alterNERDtive its more complicated than it seems...trust me, I tried
Tried what? Policing? Because fuel ratting is pretty simple.
alterNERDtive it was difficult for me, but then again..I only had one practise run before I headed out for my first trip to Beagle and I’ve pretty much forgotten about my brief life in the Rat community since then
"The universe pays us" I love that sentiment.
This is top notch work. Greast video. Answers many questions I had about the Fuel Rats. They saved me a couple times.
The Fuel Rats have literally restored my faith in humanity.
this is beautiful, I dont even play this game but bless the fuel rats
The fuel rats are awesome and really enrich the game. 😊 .o7
I just found this channel this place is pretty underrated
I was 10 hours into my game when I used the fuel rats. Coincidentally I had just learned of them the day before. What a fun experience it was. I aspire to join them once I have more game experience under my belt. Thanks for this upload!
I cant say enough, praisewise, about a community whose enjoyment is the fact that they helped ppl! Just amazing. Hope I dont ever have to yell at them, but it's so nice to know they are out there because they have fuel and you dont...
I have a lot of respect for these guys. Very professional and valued service.
