Welcome, friends and foes, Survivors and Killers. Today we'll be examining what traits define a good main protagonist, and breaking down each of Dead by Daylight's 23 Survivors to test their mettle and figure out which would be the ideal main protagonist for the game by accurately quoting Gandhi on multiple occasions.

I feel like Bill is sort of an Obi-Wan character. He's here to get them out, not himself. Hell, that same attitude is what sent him to the fog in L4D. He sacrificed himself to save his friends. And in DBD he is able to continue to do that.

I never realised the biblical imagery of adam, thats such a cool point! Even his clothing. He’s the most visible out of every character because of his long white coat, and being visible is a key part of being a protagonist. Plus it’s white, symbolising purity, with the long sleeves you always see on portraits of jesus.

I don't really believe that Nea doesn't care about others, her whole archive entry was about fighting against mercury poisoning because people were dying, but still she is a bit of a lone wolf so she would be better off as a secondary protagonist
She's the wild card with murky loyalties who abandons the protagonist but then comes back to save them in a crucial moment.

fun fact, I believe kate would be better as a rival for the entity as the main protagonist, here is why. In the lore anyone who has ever seen the entity has fallen into madness before being eating up, Kate is the only survivor to survive and escape on multiple attempts and never go mad. the entity had to try multiple time to capture her and quote from the devs “she is special and connected to the entity in a way the other survivors are not and that is why it picked her” Adam doesn’t have that kind of connection but I totally agree with him being up there for a main protagonist. great video btw enjoyed it a lot first video I’ve seen of yours (edit: even people who haven’t been taken by the entity and have just unfortunately seen it outside of its own realm doing whatever it does when it’s not stealing people will fall into a permanent state of despair and agony mentally)

You could argue that they were both depressed, but Felix broke out of his depression and that's a stretch anyway
I like that. I'd have to agree. When I first saw this video, i was thinking Kate. And if I'm being honest, I do like the idea of Adam being it, but I don't think that it has anything to do with religion. Now I am a religious person, but I just feel like it has nothing to do with religion.
Also it's implied in her Tome that the four-note tune she's hearing in her head is the DBD theme.

I like to think the Dwight will actually grow a backbone after taking all this abuse in the trials and fight back against the Entity in some way, I mainly say Dwight cause he is typically described and portraited as a coward and has his whole life maybe he will finally break through that shell of insecurity and worry.
Agreed, a good protagonist doesn't start and end with the same personality. They have personal growth. We can see the type Dwight would encounter. Even his perks and how they differ from his backstory show growth. These other characters have good reason to oppose the entity and even foil it, but they don't look like they have much to grow.
@@tkbryan95 Yeah that's what I thought. In a storyline where we follow Dwight and he interacts with other characters, you could imagine how his experiences and the things he learns from other people would change him into a more protag-type character: learning how to be strong in the face of adversity from David and Ash, how to survive from Jake and what a good leader needs to do from Bill etc. Plus, as an everyman type character, he'd be much easier to relate to than others who have a more specified personality type. Character development would also make him a survivor that less people disregard and it would be interesting to see him in a different light. Would make for much more interesting storytelling than having a character that perfectly counters the entity counter the entity with no real change in their approach
his probably going to be (boy)friend David helps him grow and be more fearless.
They forget the trial every death/escape so the entity can feed on pure emotions, although there could be a moment where he can fight back or be brave only to forget it the next time he's in trial
I’d say it’s probably Kate actually, since she has encountered the entity before and in most story’s, the main protagonist has met his/her rival before, if not though you could see Adam as the main boy then Kate as the main girl?

I still think it’s Kate, her character plays as a symbol of hope that keeps everyone going, also in her background stories she’s had encounters with the entity before being captured unlike anyone else

Elodie and Felix also had some encounters with the Entity.
But Kate actually fell into the entity at the cave. She just thought she escaped.
I’ve always figured Dwight was the MC considering he’s referred to as the leader and whatnot. Honestly I could see character development for him after passing his trials and beating the Trapper to move on and escape the never ending death loop that is DBD and outplay the entity.
Tbh Dwight strikes me as the kind of character that, even though before he was considered wimpy and a coward and now faced with certain death and surrounded by people that are far more capable than him, develops a hearth of gold.

Whats with Vigo? Hes the one keeping an eye on everything and even has the Archives. He knows everything about the Survivors, the Killers and a lot of the entity.
God, even the wholle plot of Dead by Daylight is told by him. Either way hes the Protagonist, as the Entitys enemy, or he is the Entity himself
He is the extremely powerful, wise and intelligent mentor character that, while having the power to suppress the big bad of the story, is not solely capable to actually defeat it.

Dwight is the OG boy, the first survivor, and the leader.
Kate has the deepest connection with the Entity and plays the main theme.
Felix and Elodie are from the Pariah's, closely related to a society that knows about the Entity.
What about pyramid head? He's literally there to starve the entity.

As am Adam main. I was never expecting Adam. That's actually sounds amazing.
I feel like in a prolonged 'rebellion' against the entity certain killers would defect to the 'good' side. Hillbilly for example is IMO nothing short of a hero in his backstory, and others might be keen on wrenching control of their life back, even if they intend to continue their evil actions afterwards.
The problem is some of the killers are only alive because of the entity The plague nearly died before the entity took her into his realm if they defected the entity could simply allow the disease to take her right there and then and same with the spirit the spirit is only a spirit because of the entity
Evan: Horrible murderer and person. Tried resisting, though. Could try resisting again.
Philip: A good boy. He only killed someone who was sending people to get crushed alive. Would be a good recon / warrior.
Max: Fucked up kid, basically a feral murderer.
Sally: Snapped under trauma. Maybe she'd turn to healing the survivors?
Mike: Pure evil.
Lisa: While she took retribution, becoming the Hag is more than just the road to hell with good intentions. Evil.
Herman: MK Ultra style brainwasher mind controller, evil.
Anna: Kills everyone but little girls who she starves because she doesn't know how to care for kids. Could be redeemed?
Bubba: IDFK texas chainsaw massacre lore
Freddy: Evil.
Amanda: She's resigned to her new duty.
Jeffrey: Creepy killer clown perv, finger lickin good.
Rin: Literally just wrath spirit.
Legion: Edgy teen angst. Could be persuaded by radicalness and Jeff Johansen?
Adiris: Speaks babylonian, probably not.
Danny: Stalker murderer. Does it for the thrill. Psycho.
Demo: SCREEEE
Kazan: Literally a fucking rage demon
Caleb: Literally goes by the moniker of the deathslinger. But perhaps he could be persuaded to test his stuff on stronger things?
Pyramid boye: Literally punishment incarnate. Starves the entity?
Talbot: Addicted and mutated beyond recognition, dependent on the Entity.
Victor and Charlotte: Victor was only reanimated by the entity? And Charlotte would prioritize Victor's life and keeping everyone else away - disdain for humanity.
Ji-Woon Hak: Edgy psycho serial killer. "Screams of pain are music!"

A few characters I can see have something of a suitable heart.
1. The Wraith / Phillip - He had a heart but was a sleeping bear. He crushed cars for a living but could not fathom the idea his job was a means to hide evidence. His murders were done against criminals who used him unknowingly. He doesn't kill for the thrill of it. He kills out of a sense of moral purpose. He became an angel of mercy and death. He had to kill his mother to put an end to her suffering after a killing crew horribly tortured her. His vengeance came with igniting a killing crew ablaze... His mind warped and tortured in his early life. And would be truly awakened once he was used to kill once more.
Phillip kills out of mercy and a sense of vigilantee justice. The Entity thrives on a vengeance that never satisfies.
2. The Nurse / Sally - Sally snapped after the loss of her husband and the persistent hell on earth that was the mental facility she worked for. A broken woman in need of compassion was neglected what she needed most. Her actions broke her heart and hollowed out the woman she strived to be in the past. When she commited the mass slaughter of the facility; she was never the woman she was once before... But maybe that compassion could be the means to lure back the kind hearted nurse who sought to heal and provide solidarity for those in need.
3. The Huntress / Anna - Anna is savage by the definition. Her mother raised a solitary life and when she died in the forest, humming Anna's lullaby. It snapped something... created a longing in her. She hunts dangerous game and humans for materials and color garbs, toys, and supply. But little girls remind her of the motherly bond that Anna was deprived of. She never learned how to pass on her mother's lessons of survival. How to feed and care for a child of her own. She desperately wants to give what she lost when she was young... Perhaps a chance of motherly tenderness could give Anna momentary clarity.
4. The Twins / Victor & Charlotte - I don't believe Charlotte could be turned good. But her entire investment in the Entity's ploys is purely on Victor. Victor has been dead for years and the Entity's machinations brought her twin and only family back to life. Charlotte only desires to be reunited with her brother and nothing more. And she'll kill anyone who threatens that. I could imagine if Victor was injured and someone helped him, and reunited Charlotte and Victor together. It could move even her broken heart if compassion was shown to the two. To look beyond their grim visage and see them as human.
that is to say, if Victor is even truly himself. He died so long ago and Charlotte only lived to protect his body from being removed from her. Killing anyone who proved to be a threat. If she could be shown that Victor was no longer himself.. She may snap and destroy everything and herself.
Myers would rebel if he feels like it. I remember that he is SO EVIL he can leave the entity's realm whenever he wants.
Plus, he kills for himself, not for a handful of thorns.
The pariahs are the protagonists, felix, Elodie and probably the next to come. The entity tried to take them at the internment camp but the parents sacrificed themselves, the entity is now coming back later in their lives to take them one by one, first felix and manifested the blight which he read about. Then Elodie who before being taken read about conjoined twins

@@extrashotofespresso_ Honestly, I think if the Devs had thought further into the lore of the world at the beginning when making the first characters, there would be lots more connections and the original survivors would most likely have been from a group similar to the Pariahs with history with the entity.
It’s no coincidence that right after they start really developing the story that characters with a stronger connection between each other and the entity begin to pop up.

Well now you've gone and made me wish for a DbD Fanfiction. We've all seen the Characters histories, and know everything about them up to the point of the trial but rarely anything about how they interact in the field. I wanna see David taking the hit from somebody, I wanna see Ace 'Have a good feeling about this' when gambling on a vulnerable generator, I wanna see Quinten neurotically figure out a pattern in the Killers attitude and awkwardly try to explain how to exploit it. These are a side of the game we get too see mechanically but never thematically, and I think it'd be so cool.
Kate is definitely the main protagonist. She’s the perfect character for it. She’s an innocent girl who loves making people happy, but here that desire to make others happy will turn into determination to help her fellow survivors. Her being a sweet girl being put in this horrible situation is textbook for a horror movie or story. Adam is cool and all, but he doesn’t really seem to be able to “lift his teammates spirits.” He might be good at getting his teammates through the trial, but Kate will help people get through their new life here without descending into madness. And that’s more important to me.
I've been looking for a DBD lore channel for a while and you're amazingly well-thought out. Well done and can't wait for more!
I do think Dwight would be the Protag, while Adam would be more of the Mentor figure who has to sacrifice himself at some point. Dwight would like Ash in the first Evil Dead movie, starting off as a nobody, but through the trials and tribulations, he becomes more capable then ever. Keep in mind aswell, a beginner Dwight is someone to laugh at, but a high ranking, experienced Dwight is someone the killers fear most.

I always loved the idea of Dwight being the main character. I think the idea of a painfully average person with nothing super special about him being thrown into the trials as a very interesting story to tell. He’s not a survivalist like Jake or a war veteran and zombie killer like Bill. He’s not as bright as Claudette or as fast as Meg. He’s just some guy living a mundane life with no big aspirations. In a way, he’s a bit of an Everyman. It may have been temporary or it’s everyday, but most of us have been or are a Dwight in real life. With all of that, he still does his part and uses his leadership skills to survive and lead the others to victory. An average every day man with no special feats, can still be a hero
Admittedly, I’m a little biased because I main him and I relate to him.

IMO and just by my knowledge of writing tropes I agree that Adam would be the main character because the Entity itself is a sort of Lovecraftian horror monster and religion tends to be prominent for good or bad in those kinda stories. Kate, supposedly having escaped the Entity multiple times already cannot be the protagonist by that fact alone. Especially if shes escaped by herself. If anything she'd be the "Wise Old Man" that teaches the protagonist how to escape. Also, I think Dwight would be the "failed" leader that dies at/near the beginning of the story.
This made me appreciate the final three characters even more. However, I still say Dwight is the Main Protagonist, the hero doesn't have to have everything all figured out when they begin. Dwight learning and adapting and showing he can be a great leader can be the story. And maybe the other two are the people who help him when he is at his lowest lows.
If Ash is the protagonist, DBD would be like a shonen manga XD
I think Felix could potentially be an option, since he has the closest link to the entity, and has a definitive reason for being there and wanting to leave. He also has characteristics and flaws that make him relatable and easy to like for many people.

Wouldn't have made a difference. They weren't written to be a direct counterpart to any one killer, which is why Jeff and the other licensed survivors were crossed out.

You did not mention Felix backstory. Think he has flaws, motivation and backstory. Adam is good pick but I think its supreme like Gandalf. Hes a good guide and rock for protagonist. Imo ofc. I just would've hoped u took the backstory and not just character traits

Ash lead an army against the undead , lead the ghost beaters and for a while lead the Nightmare warriors. But doesn't get to lead the survivers in the entity's realm even though he wasn't sent hear by the entity and nearly now's a spell that will send him back as well as the knowledge that the cendarian dagger is in the entitys realm.
Always believe that Vigo could be a good protagonist if a story about DbD is about, because he is the only person to escape the entity’s realm

How do you think you would revise this story, after the release of Elodie? After all, her entire backstory is about trying to find the Entity for taking her parents and do all she can to discover what it is, and defeat it. Would you say that she’s a better fit for Main Protagonist, or would you stay the course with Adam?

The story can somehow go like this,
It all starts when adam finds a secret passage laid out in one of the trials, he takes it and ends up in the Archives and meet the Observer, otherwise known as Vigo, who tells him all about the Entity and ways of defeating it, Adam then gets motivated to fight the Entity and motivates the other survivors to do the same.
Fill in the rest Im out of ideas.
It’s far too simple in my opinion. Personally I think you’d need a somewhat different take on the story, especially considering you can’t have all the killers and the survivors in the movie
The braver charecters proceed to take or craft weapons to kill as many killers as possible then using chests they trap all the killers in the basement
Why would it be that easy for Adam to find the Observer? If the solution were that simple, the survivors would have escaped a long time ago.
Another thing that makes it even clearer is that Benedict Baker's journal entry about Adam wass the last one he ever created before disappearing

I think Ash being a licensed character disqualifies him, but Evil Dead, despite its action and comedy elements, is based in a Lovecraftian world. The Necronomicon is even a book in Lovecraft's universe. But Ash isn't the main protagonist. Playing as Ash opens up more of an alternate timeline where the Entity is one and the same with the Dark Ones from Evil Dead.
They should make a dbd movie with sequels and everything even Ash Williams appearing in 1 movie

Idk tossing out a potential protagonist because they have “self serving attitudes” or “self destructive behaviors” is kinda a missed point there. Those are things people can relate to especially when you throw character development into the mix you got someone a viewer can connect with by watching the character grow as a individual. Thats been proven to work perfectly rather than having a typical “marry sue” that everyone seems to hate.
Like nea. In her lore she was questioning her friend for trying to do the obvious right thing instead of skating with her. Then she found out what was going on and started to want to help
I still think Dwight would be perfect for the main character
I mean. If we go by the Pyramid Head theory you also support, theoretically. He’s a protagonist in account of being a killer that actively punishes the Entity by killing survivors by sending them to his own places of judgement and torment instead of the hooks. And his ability to carve through the Entity’s realm with his knife. Almost as if cutting it open.
If Elodie were on the list at this point I think she would top it, her entire role along with Felix was to discover evidence and fight the entity.
As a Kate main I loved this ❤ thanks for giving me a new perspective on the lore!
With all the toxic survivors there are these days, its 100% the killer.
I think it's actually Felix. His lore is kind of a giveaway, making his engagement with the entity very personal.
I feel like if Dwight was to be the main character Adam would probably be his mentor figure who helps him understand the world he's in

Honestly, I still see Dwight as the protagonist simply because I don’t think the community’s interpretation can give him a great platform to build off of.
I see Dwight as the newcomer to the camp, as if he was the last of the survivors to make it to the realm, his fearful and baby survivor like nature being a consequence of that. When he arrives Adam has been cemented as a leader, both due to his capability as a teacher and his messiah like personality. But I imagine that everyone had likely given up hope, after many deaths, many victories, and many failures they’ve become accustomed to the loop, so accustomed in fact that when Dwight appears and attempts to find his way to leave they laugh at him, they sigh when he is part of the trial as he’s much too nervous to be an effective teammate. But his baby like nature and persistence to truly leave sparks some fire in some of the cast. Idk, my writers brain is taking vague non story and developing it.
You know what, I agree with you. While Adam makes sense as a leader, Dwight makes a good underdog for people to root for. There's a lot of growth Dwight could undergo, which would make for an interesting arc of starting as a nervous wreck and ending as an equal to Adam.
I would argue Jake not inherently wanting to leave doesn't remove him from the running. A protagonists goal doesn't have to be the opposite of the antagonist. His goal is to survive at all costs and his personal perks are all directly competing with the entity. Iron will hides him from the killers while injured via sheer willpower, saboteur actively goes against the entity's game, which is how it sees the trials and calm spirit turns the entity's own spies against it by having them outright refuse to reveal his position despite the crows working directly for the entity itself. And with Jake being part of the original batch it speaks more to his fight with the entity than any survivor added later
Also in the end I'm pretty sure vigo is the protagonist. It makes more sense when you play the mobile game, but Vigo specifically learned dark magic to fight the entity which is why he doesn't participate in any trials and he's the one who not only explains the concept of the trials to the player but he is actively watching all the survivors AND killers looking for a way to stop the entity for good. He even guides the survivors with the original crew having outfits that show their role to him.

I do like to think it's both Elodie and Felix since they're not only canonically friends but also have a role in investigating the entity. While them being aware of their designated killers. Their lore intertwines with the other. ♡

A good way they could expand on Dwight's skills which are very specific to their tasks in the Realms would be by implying he met Benedict Baker and was taken under his wing. While exploring life before the fog is interesting and definitely adds to the worldbuilding, there could be some characterbuilding by showing lore after the trials started.
Kate is a better protagonist imo just because she never gives up. Like someone else in the comments said everyone who has seen the entity has gone insane...but kate has not shes the only survivor who has escaped(the entity) has not lost it and keeps going. She was chosen by the entity cause shes special to it because shes the only person who hasn't gone mad. She has a special connection with the entity and it chose her specifically.

I think the protagonist is all of them because if the entity can make these games for the killer and survivors to play but what if everyone has a different realm than everybody can be the protagonist of even the killer.

Which is represented by Autodidact staring out weak, before slowly becoming stronger and stronger the more it is used.
@@tofferooni4972 sounds fair but couldnt they like have given the protagonist more meta perks?? like adrenaline is sorta like an underdog perk until the end of the game where it comes in clutch, i dont know one time someone on my team had autodidact and we were about to get the hatch but the killer came and the progress bar went back and i got hit and put on the hook

I think Dwight would be the best protagonist. He would be the nervous and scared leader that eventually manages to overcome his fears, truly earn the respect of his fellow survivors and defeat the entity once and for all.

I like this theory and it is one that feels very plausible. Your facts and evidence are pretty well made as well. Its very hard to argue and I quite enjoy it.
I would argue for felix here since he overcame his social awkwardness but always felt like an impostor in social situations.
