- Welcome, friends and foes, Survivors and Killers. Today we'll be discussing Yui Kimura (yeah, a Survivor video!) I'll be delving into both her basic backstory and her new piece of lore in Tome VI in my attempts to convince you about just how great Yui's story is and how it should serve as a template for other stories to come.

One detail that I absolutely cannot stop praising is the parallel between the survivor herself, and the killer.
Yui has defied tradition and became a better person for it
While Kazan held on to tradition so hard that it turned him into a monster
It blows my mind how good both of these characters can be when we have the Hag's lore dump as well. The quality seems to be all over the place.

Comparing Yui to Yun Jin Lee is pretty interesting because in a way they both have the same sort of drive yet it seems that Yun Jin became more selfish because of it. When she grinded to do her dream of music for a living is an abstract way to do it I'll probably dive deeper to see other things I can compare
Yun Jin Lee was offered the same choice, to be human or a very good machine, and unlike Yui she chose the latter. She knew what Ji Woon was doing and decided to overlook it in favour of her own career.

Yui has perfect Final Girl energy, which in a game about slashers these kind of survivors need.
She'd be a great protagonist for an anime or tv show because she has
1. an interesting skill set.
2. Understandable and interesting goals and ambitions.
3. an internal conflict (Empathy vs Ambition) that's reasonable and can be routinely explored.
4. A history of overcoming dangerous situations
5. An aesthetic that is both unique but also believable in multiple genres.

One problem I am really starting to have with the lore of DbD is how once a character gets to the entites realm their story just stops. I really liked the Blights because it didn't stop and we were able to see a character react and change due to the entitey.
I hope at some point we get a tome entry of a character after they’ve reached the entities realm, maybe for a character who already has a tome entry
It'd be interesting if the entity physically made a survivor. They'd be a bit off. Every time you'd see them you'd wonder if they were actually "Human" at all or just a sort of copy of a person.
Imagine if all the killers raised him/her then they all just turned on them after he/she came of age. Screwed up in universe, hilarious to think about lol.

That's why I wish there were more "alien" Killers like Demogorgon, or even possibly a non-human Survivor, to showcase that our planet isn't the only one it has visited and sink in the terrifying reality that it may have already devoured countless other worlds.
That's mainly because Survivors get Ctrl + Z'ed after every trial, and Killers just *stabby stabby hooky hooky*
Yui is one of my favorite survivors for her heroism. I really liked that you highlighted that Yui doesn't hate men, but tradition. Many people on Twitter and Tik Tok 🙄 say that she hates men and that's not true, she is one of the few survivors that aren't onedimensional. Excelent video!!

I agree with your analysis: Yui's story gives us a character we can root for vs another survivor skin. I really wish they gave mah boi Ace some more character development, from what I read in his Tome he got NOTHING added to him, it just kept highlighting how lucky he is. I loooove his aesthetic, name, cosmetics, and I like the luck angle....BUT GIVE HIM A GOSH DANG PERSONALITY!!

When you think about it Kazan is the dark reflection on what Yui could have been and what she at one point nearly became, someone who walks over others and beats them down to further their own hubris and pride like how he saw it necessary to brutalize those that called him Oni Yamaoka whereas she went to help someone who wronged her personally on such a grand scale..
Both Yui and the Oni are bound by tradition.

I'll watch the video after finishing my last 3 challenges, but the lore is being so far so good from the last 7 entries
Funnily enough, the entity waits for the perfect moment to take someone, but when Yui is taken, it’s out in the open, random, and in the worst time where Yui hasn’t reached the peak of emotion. Which means that the entity got tired of waiting for it and took them anyway. Which makes it even better.
I would like it if bhvr release a survivor that is not a decent person, but someone that scams and cheats and makes other people’s lives miserable. And a killer that is a good person that get screwed over by others and end up losing their humanity.
Well, you got Yun-Jin Lee for the former; she’d covered Ji-Woon’s tracks when he begun drawing blood, & 2 of her Perks revolve around saving the player’s own skin while their comrades perish. Although, she came from an impoverished upbringing, & was desperate to NOT go back to that place once she’d gained prestige & opulence at last.
There are a couple of Killers who would maaaybe qualify for the latter...?
The killer you're looking for is plague and survivor that new girl that is coming out in next chapter
Yun Jin Lee and The Wraith fit those categories
I believe Spirit was one of those killers, however it's been forever since I read her lore.
Yun Jin and (arguably) Ace would qualify as the former. Yun Jin is an ambitious girl determined to do anything to keep the prestige she worked so hard for, even if it means not coming clean about the suspicions she had of her colleague killing people. And Ace was a gambler with a bounty on his head, given his penchant for swindling.
As for killers that were once good people: Wraith, Spirit, Plague, Hag and Susie from the legion. Wraith was just tryna make ends meet but was unknowingly killing people for his crimelord boss. Spirit was just a normal school girl who’s abusive father killed her, causing her to become a vengeful onryo. Plague just wanted to help the people who revered her as The High Priestess. Hag was once a human named Lisa Sherwood who was kidnapped and tortured by cannibals. And Susie was just going along with what her friend group was doing, she never wanted to be a murderer.
I wanna start off by saying I have been enjoying your analysis immensely-- now that DBD lore is being more closely developed, the game world itself feels more alive and immersive, and hopefully creators like you can help steer the developers in the right direction in regards to storytelling.
I have yet to watch this video on Yui, but I was wondering what your thoughts might be on the lore of Kate Denson, as she was revealed to have some sort of special ability/connection to the entity's realm. Élodie remains at the top for me, but I also very much enjoyed Kate's tome.
Edit: I have watched the video and once more I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Truly, even after completing the third chapter in this tome, I was not keen on Yui's backstory... but you have made me appreciate this woman so much more now. Actually, I think I might prestige her next and make her my new main!
When you were going on about her themes I'm supprised you didn't go into the contrast between her and the Oni and his themes of traditionalism.
That and how The Oni and Yui are perfect opposites one fights to keep things the same to keep the old ways. Where as Yui does the exact same but fights for change blindly and fights for independence. But they both end up heading in the same direction

Eh they'll just continue to make vapid snarky female characters that are perfect with no flaws and make all men look stupid and denigrate them in order to raise the character up as a smart and independent yass queen archetype that honestly doesn't make a strong independent woman in my eyes

I’m a Yui main and I once had a ghostie teabag me untill I bled out and died… felt a little to close to home for me. as I relate to her the most so yeah I would say shes a true feminist character; especially the fact that she hates tradition of gender.
It's easy to see Yui's bio as misandry, but as you said, it really is just a reflection of the currently existing misoginy.
I have a friend who really doesnt like Zarina or Yui for this, and it's quite the shame really. Of course, he doesn't see why either character needs to fight as they do.
I mean, I kinda feel like your friend and while I don't hate them, I do feel the writers trying to get good boy twitter points.
It kinda feels like forced feminism for the sake of forced diversity but again, I can tolerate the characters themselves if I try to not think too hard about the lore.

Men easily see women who fight against sexism and patriarchy as enemies, because they dont submit to men made rules that imprison them from free life. Anything that takes away mens control over women is seen as attack at men.

I don't get why some men get bitter over this, and say it's for "brownie points". No, there are many women out there who are like Yui, had the same experiences as Yui, and the DBD writers were inspired by that. It's not forced diversity. It's not misandrist. It is reality for many women.
@@redtheyiffer Do you have any experience with Japanese social expectations and sexism? It verey much is still a thing and Japan due to older generations living so long and holding onto coorperate positions far longer which holds many business and cultural standards to that of several decades ago.
Survivors with perks that match up with their personalities and motivations are my favorite because it makes them more than just skins it makes them feel like your choosing someone who would act the way their lore says they do. Thats why for every survivor I play I always try to use one of their personals because it makes playing survivor more fun for me :>
This makes me proud to main Yui when I do play survivor :) if only they did this with many other characters. Personally I love the Trickster’s lore and hope they do as much with him as the biker girl herself!
I have to say, she has one major flaw: Her cosmetics. I know its personal taste, and obviously racing and biker stuff is her style, but if we can get Dwight as "Christmas present #2" we can get her something a bit more out there.
Okay, regarding the part with the "Dark Ages" of DbD and the mention, that Survivors are basically glorified skins - does something speak against making the Survivors unique? Because it always bothered me, that they are simply skins for each other and there's not real reason to play a specific Survivor in a specific way like you do as a Killer.
I'm not talking about things that are already in place, like some Survivors being quieter than others; that's a minuscule difference that is easily outplayed by Killer-perks. I'm talking about making Survivors just as unique as the Killers.
My first thought was, to just lock the Survivor-specific perks to each Survivor, but that would alter the gameplay way too much. So I think, maybe giving a Survivor either one or a set of small powers that can be acitvated once per game. (in the case of a set, you have to choose one before a trial) The powers obviously shouldn't be so gamechanging like Killer-powers, but I think giving each Survivor something unique only they can use would improve them.
They thought about this. Heres a problem. There would just be a survivor meta, and each new survivor may never be played because their passive or perks are bad

I absolutely loved this video; as a Yui main I was always so encaptivated by her story and paired up with her overall racer-aesthetic cosmetics, she just seemed great. I honestly don't like the Tome since the backstories are locked away by how many hours you pour into the challenges; so I appreciate these videos so much because it not only gives a deeper analysis to their backstories, but it also provides me with their lore without having the need to stress myself with the challenges. Regardless of that, I found myself loving your depiction of her struggle against her own desires to win; as well as your thoughts and opinions to those who deemed her original backstory as one pandering towards a gender-war. I whole-heartedly love the DBD lore (well, the one's that interest me at least); and I just wanted to thank you for making these videos! I hope to see even more analysis videos soon!

This has to be the best, well written lore of a survivor ever existed in Dbd. Kudos to the writers.
How?
For all of it's rampant wokeism, Yui is remarkably one note - even more so than characters that no lore, like Meg - she starts at Point A and remains there. She just meanders around Point A to create the illusion of journey progression and character development, sadly this is a writing technique that often fools pseudo intellectuals analysing the work.
But the most glaring piece of BS done bad is the fight with stalker, it's so egregious that I think Jussie Smollet might have wrote it. Her attacker isn't incapacitated in anyway merely disarmed, adrenaline might numb pain and provide a burst of strength but it ain't going to do jack for movement. Her broken limbs would still no use to her, even with the adrenaline flood.
Expecting the audience to believe that she won a fight against an assailant with 2 broken limbs, requires a level of suspension of disbelief that even Star Wars doesn't demand. No matter how good subsequent lore is, it never able to pull the rest of the mire that this misstep has created.

He had so many injuries and was so outnumbered yet lived to see another day so someone having 2 broken limbs but with adrenaline pumping in there veins almost anything is damm near possible seriously Roy had all type of shrapnel in his body which probably would have hindered his movement but it didn't. The human body when at it's most desperate to survive is not matched by many things.

I'd love a gaiden game with Yui, Adam, Felix and Elodie as the main ensemble.
I think some of this is also reflected when she was trapped in a cycle in the fog where she constantly drove past crashed racers before later becoming one of them, which was mentioned in the tome. I also think it’s interesting that she has visions of Kazan, a samurai who also had an obsession that drove him forward; a loose parallel. She didn’t want to be like him.
It also makes me wonder what if she actually is related to Rin & Kazan? Maybe like a cousin? Since she dreamt and felt him before her going into the realm. I suppose you could argue that’s because of the Entity though.

Honestly Yui is one of a few character lores I enjoy knowing about. I like how she is basically a normal human just like us. And it gives you a reason to actually care for the character. Unlike Hag.
That video on Your channel was my dream. I love Yui and I really enjoyed that Lore Deep Dive. I'am personally tied to her because everytime when I readed Her story I felt like I was reading about myself. I mean Her character is the same like mine and I also see that She have same type of life struggles, goals and lifestyle like Me. That's why this tome was for me the most important in archives. I have so strong bond with Her that I want make some references to Her in my own personality and life. To be honest I'm really thankful for that video cause I finished Her archive story 2 days ago and I really needed some serious analyse about her.

This video game me a newfound love for Yui. My favorite survivor will always be Jeff, just because I relate with him so much and I love his style (maybe a vid on him someday?) but in all honestly I got really touched by this video listening about Yui, that empathy quote really resonates with me. Listening to her story almost felt like listening to a documentary, she just seems so human and I love it. She is probably my second favorite survivor now

great video! I honestly never looked twice at Yui until you pointed out the strengths in her character. I know you have a lot of requests but It would be cool if you could take a look at Feng Min. I'm quite obsessed with her for no particular reason, I think I've absorbed every single scrap of her lore. It would be interesting to hear what you think. Behavior since her launch hasn't given her anything new when it comes to lore, not even in cosmetic descriptions. I know you touched on her briefly in your video "Who is the Protagonist of Dead by Daylight," but I would enjoy an in depth look at her. sorry for the long comment lol, I just don't want to be overlooked.

I think the demon in yui’s dreams was the entity in disguise. Shaking her into a more empathetic person so that when she was eventually taken into the realm she would have more energy for the entity to feast on
Fuck yeah I’ve been waiting for this video as soon as I found this channel. Yui is my favourite character in the game by a mile and her lore is amazing.
Yui is my favorite survivor, she's the one I relate to the hardest story wise. Upbringing, going against tradition, even down to the kind of jobs she first held, and doing unconventional things for a female as her career choice and being independent while doing so. Next to her I like Kate's backstory though I feel the tome version of Kate's story sucked. Your video gave me a lot of insight and honestly made me feel a lot more relateable with Yui and I respect the writing that went into her story more, even if you ended up just making it seem deeper than the actual writers meant to make it seem. I am also a huge fan of the silent hill ladies cause I've been a silent hill nerd since I was a kid playing games on dreamcast and PS2, but I won't count it with the dbd characters.
As someone still new to Dead by Daylight, and someone who is otherwise a Kate simp (plus a simp for other certain Survivor and Killer ladies), GODDAMN does this breakdown make me love and respect Yui as an individual. A hardcore desire to win tempered by empathy, and a sense of great self-awareness that helps her grow and improve, there is nothing to hate about her. With all this in mind, I would love to befriend her if the Entity took me into it's accursed realm, perhaps more.
Also I think the Oni's backstory and hers makes their pairing as Survivor and Killer a perfect fit. She rebels against the kind of tradition that stifles human freedom, fights to win, and does so in a way that doesn't compromise her goodness and humanity, and he gave his life, honor, and humanity to his obsessive need to uphold tradition at any cost, since he saw compromising on it as certain doom for his family and their way of life. Libetarian vs Reactionary, Freedom vs Tradition, honor vs dishonor, and humanity vs the lack thereof. A match made in hell, but a perfect adversarial relationship as they are polar opposites in just about every way (yes, even gender) while having a similar cultural background. Their pairing and chapter truly does represent the point where Behavior started caring about lore, and boy did they have a strong start.

I wonder if the devs picked the name Kimura for Yui, since Kimura is an actual competitor with a submission hold named after him. He had a pretty "competitive" rival too (Helio Gracie).

Interesting... I interpreted the end of the animation to mean that the winning racer just came back to show Yui that he won, to rub it in her face, and her being like "eh... whatever, I guess that's fine." But I suppose your interpretation might make more sense.

I think the initial criticism of "Yui's story is man vs woman" is valid because of the framing that is fixed by the story. And with that being the only glaring criticism it is clearly a great story.
Kate Denson: how far inspiration can go
As much as I enjoy this story of Yui. I was hoping for a darker piece of lore that hints at some more unexplored aspects of the dbd universe. I assumed they were leading us to theme of a snapshot of a killer while they are still human. Yui through her drive to be on top and live would eventually succumb and take the power role and work for the entity. This would not happen in the lore but would show us the picture that would eventually be painted. I hope sometime soon we get a genuinely deplorable Survivor or at least one with dark hidden aspects not yet realized. Maybe this new girl being added will tango with this idea. I have not read much of any of her lore so I guess we will see.
You know, this might have just added Yui to the list of Survivors I believe can escape the Entity. I believe she'll go back for someone and get seriously hurt because of it. There is a good chance that she will end up sacrificing herself so that someone else can escape. Should she escape however, she may not race again, if not for a while, unless her wounds do slowly heal.

22:52 Where was it confirmed that the guy who won Yui's race gave her the prize money? I finished Yui's lore a week ago and to me I interpreted it as he was just taunting Yui with the money, the solem look she has on her face proof of that. Did I miss something?
I feel like having the Oni be one of yui's ancestors would of been a interesting thing. Yui would of been the only person apart of the Kimura family to break the cycle of violence and hate when she forfeits the race to save someone she hates. From Kazan (the oni) the bloodline of violence would continue until yui comes and shatters the cycle. Ending the kimura name that was ever so associated with Kazan and the people after him. and yui her own person and all the others after. Turning their backs on the old Kimura name and starting over.
Shinji deserves all the bad karma. Him cheating cost Hiro the ability to walk and I am petty enough to leave him to suffer in the wreckage of his own making. Yui is a better person than i am obviously.
I like to call the Sakura 7 the “Japanese Caramel Curves” sometimes.

Yui defied his father and tradition to become a self made woman, but doesn't succumb to become like the Oni. Which reminds me of the movie Whiplash, where a person is driven to perfection of it's craft the humanity is lost, where as in Yui actually grew and fought that "machine" metaphorically the Oni who embraced the perfection. The Oni in contrast is like Akuma/Gouki in Street Fighter who strived to become the best fighter which as you can see his lost his humanity while Ryu being tempted and consumed by the dark hado, fights it off and instead of becoming a demon like Akuma, he became a better fighter always striving even when losing as his quote says it "It's not the victory, but what you get and learned out from the fight". Japanese stories are the best!

what happens to the people who aren't important enough to be in the game because she went into the fog during a race right so you'd think someone else would've gone through it too would they just not see the fog or would they be spit out or just die
If Yui followed her families expectations she wouldn't be in a cycle of death and pain. Don't know if there is a message there..
That's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its not like the Entity specifically chose her because she defied a tradition that the Entity wasn't even aware of.
She would of been chosen regardless, she was hand picked by the entity and no matter her life choices she was going to be taken

Hi! So I have some suggestions for possible future? Or just little dust just to think about. So, if you ever got the rights and chance to rewrite or expand lores of older survivours and killers - Dwight, Jake, Meg, Claudette, Trapper, Hillbilly, Wraith - how would they look like, the lores? Let's be honest, even with some tomes chapter, they are lacking that *love spark* , yes there are some patrs(not many) when you can say, who the survivor/killer is, what was their deal in the real world and what they had done to end in the realm of Entity... But there can be do more with that. I would love to see your point of view, maybe a retrospect on the survivor/killer or idk, "my idea for improving {insert name} lore." And I am pushing it into extreme mode, creating a parallel between survivor and the killer, like it is with each upcoming chapter, yui and kazan, ph and heather/cheryl, felix and talbot, elodie and twins. It's a long one, and I am sorry for my bad english, not native language# but I truly enjoy your content and I am waiting patiently for more. Favourite character of all of them is the Plague. Favourite Survivor is Elodie.
