  • Welcome, friends and foes, Survivors and Killers. Today we'll be looking back on the Silent Hill chapter, which brought Konami's legendary horror franchise to Dead by Daylight with Midwich Elementary School, Cheryl Mason and Pyramid Head. We'll be discussing Pyramid Head's significant implications for DBD's canon and investigating the potential for an alternative Survivor to Cheryl, while showcasing some of Silent Hill's best moments such as a man shouting at another man eating pizza.
    Got any suggestions for things you want me to discuss? Leave a comment and I'll add it to my list!

      @@nochannel8434 the guy up there is right tho... the problem still is (and why we still think that Cheryl/Heather was not the best choice of paired survivor in matter of tying it better together) that the way he is implemented is by the movies's design/ideals (albeit looking like James' red pyramid) that don't really tie into the original lore in any way apart from the fact that he looks cool... should've been either red pyramid+James (or Maria to keep the sex of the survivor) or movie/homecoming one+Heather or mayhaps even Alex (but i doubt anyone would want to see that guy)... all of these seem like a better lore/logical ideas than what we were given and would make more sense if the chapter was made more as a satiable fanservice to diehard fans instead of the "cashgrab" it is (but hey, beggars can't be choosers)
      and well, the chapter is pretty far from perfect as it is, like, yeah, the other creatures in silent hill do fear him (and it's understandably logical for him to be the alpha that would be chosen by the entity), but only due to the fact that he originally is the most oppressive and suppressed feelings of James that threaten his own conviction and sense of self, the way we have him here is like i said more like the movie one where he IS the executioner, the punisher, BUT he punishes any and all instead of guiding with an iron fist (or blade) like he did originally, which would leave him (with a bit of thought) in the exact same position as Valtiel as your example - a guide, a protector even (regarding Cheryl at least)
      with all that in mind, the chapter would be nearly perfect if it were James or Maria but unfortunately it's not and the fact that we were given Cibyl and Lisa as outfits is just further proof that money and looking cool actually was slightly more favored over thought even through all the credit we can try to give to bE by grasping at straws

      That isn't that far off of a theory. I don't remember which game, but one of the later titles had a bad ending where the main character was turned into a Pyramid Head. While we can debate how canon the ending itself is, it shows that the potential for this to actually happen exists within Silent Hill's universe.
      Then again, this is the same franchise that had an ending where a Shiba Inu was responsible for the events of Silent Hill 2 as a joke, so I wouldn't be surprised if you call my observation flawed.

    When you said that Cheryl has never seen the photo of the hooded executioners, that might not really be true. Cheryl is a fraction of Alessa, and she was raised by Dahlia, a woman who tried to force the order and the history of silent hill upon her daughter. It would make sense that Alessa would be familiar with the executioners, and because of SH3 we know that Cheryl remembers a lot of her past. While it’s not explicit, I personally believe it’s completely plausible that Cheryl would picture pyramid head in the same way James did, especially due to her resentment of the order, and her guilt caused by her role in birthing incubus, the very thing she opposed.
    Also, every creature follows a similar pattern or aesthetic in silent hill. If it was truly a reflection of everyone’s personal turmoil the creatures wouldn’t share such similarities. Every creature is shaped by the Otherworld, which in turn is shaped by the God that the order wishes to birth. It’s not entirely unreasonable that the God keeps designs for specific roles. The executioners would kill people in order to cleanse and make way for the new world, as was the order’s wish. It makes sense that the God would use its own twisted version of them to cleanse James of his guilt, to make way for the new James.
    Just a thought :))

    This strange interaction with the world of silent hill makes me wonder how the entity would deal with other powerful/strange licenced universes. Like if the entity somehow got pennywise, who is literally a god, would the entity have to strike up a deal? Or Pinhead, who himself is controlled by an entity like being?

    • @somerandomguy9891
      @somerandomguy9891 3 года назад +86

      Well, pennywise eats fear, while the entity eats hope...I guess that they could say that the entity "rescued" pennywise after the end of the movie (or book. They can always do their own pennywise, without the looks of curry or skasgard), twisted its powers and made a deal with it: it can chase and attack the survivors on the trials, but it has to hook them. It can keep the fear and feast on it, but it has to leave the hope to the entity.

      I think the idea of Pennywise and the Entity striking a deal would work, assuming the Entity has something Pennywise wants. I've thought about this a lil' bit: Pennywise is only awake for one year, then hibernates for 27. What if, during his hibernation, he telepathically visits the Entity's realm to help torment the survivors? His powers are a bit more limited because he isn't fully there, but he's still more than a match for the survivors. It's a win-win; Pennywise gets to hunt and feed off of survivors' fear without actually leaving his lair, and the Entity gets another killer to make sacrifices. I imagine Penny would be another killer that can kill someone without an actual mori. I also think he should have a passive ability somewhat like the doctor's, making survivors hallucinate the longer they're in the trial/the more they're chased by him. (Either make them see the things he showed the Losers, or make them see the other killers.) Beyond that I'm not sure what ability he could have, there's a lot to chose from there.

    Wonder why it is that those 3 in particular can bypass the hooks, I think you nailed the explanation as to why pyramidhead is capable of this so there's one down. I think the situation with Myers could be because of the way his doctor describes him in the original Halloween, that being as the concept of evil poured into human form. If we to take that at face value than and go with the idea that there truly is no humanity in Michael (I honestly have no clue if this is true or not given how it is meant to be very purposely vague in the movie, but it's what I personally like to believe) than Michael being evil itself personified in a way may make him more powerful than the entity on a purely conceptual level thus being able to do his own thing at points. As for the pig well I have absolutely no clue. Idk if you'll see this comment cause I found the vid a week late but I would really like to here your input on this.

      I think the whole idea with the reverse bear traps is keeping with the theme of placing the fate of the victims in their own hands. Should they fail to remove it they are spared from being feasted on by the Entity, but any hope of surviving the trial is lost as well. Whereas if they do remove it they still have hope to escape... if they can survive Amanda herself.

    • @morganfitch8325
      @morganfitch8325 3 года назад +18

      Personally, I just viewed it as Michael not having any sort of loyalty to The Entity and just killing them his own way because, like you said, he's 'evil personified,' and so he doesn't care what The Entity wants, it's the way he wants to do it and he isn't going to let anyone else tell him how to kill, while the other killers use the hooks because they feel like they either owe The Entity for saving them from death and letting them keep killing or out of fear of what would happen to them if The Entity decided they weren't worth the trouble. Though, honestly I've never seen any of the Halloween movies so I just built onto another theory I'd seen to explain why it was only Michael that could ignore it, so that might just be complete bullshit. If it is, sorry for pretending to understand what I'm talking about.

      If he has sex, he also wants to be sexy, obviously. It's clear you have no clue how to do this. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand SILENT HILL II. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also JAMES SUTHERLAND's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from SILENT HILL I literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike SILENT HILL II truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humor in JAMES SUTHERLAND's existential catchphrase "HOW CAN YOU SIT THERE AND EAT PIZZA?," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those RESIDENT EVIL FANS scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a SILENT HILL II tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

    Mary's letter got me right in the feels. She truly loved James and was tragic when she got sick. Something beyond her control. She didn't deserve what happened and though James did bad things he also didn't deserve the things that drove him to it. If you look between the lines of the letter. James was a good man that treated Mary good and they loved each other very much.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 2 года назад +12

      The biggest injustice done by this video was claiming this game had ANYTHING to do with "tOxIc mAScULiniTy".
      James and Mary's relationship is memorable because of how honest it is. It isn't portrayed to be explicitly good or bad, it had layers. James LOVED Mary. He missed her. He cared about her. But he was also a man taking care of someone suffering from a terminal illness for several years, it had deteriorated his mental state, and as anyone who has had a family member with dementia will tell you, it was literally a matter of slowly watching someone rot away and become someone you DON'T know. Mary was having mood swings both from the illness and from the knowledge that this unavoidable circumstance had robbed her of her life, her relationship, and her agency. She was self aware. She knew she was having these swings and could not bear with what they were doing to James. SHE asked him to kill her.
      The plot of the game is about how James has internalized this situation and can't let go; not just because his wife died and he was the one that had to kill her, but because he feels he did it for the wrong reasons. It should have been out of love, but in that moment he was conflicted abd might have done it out of desperation to escape that situation he was in.
      That's what makes this game so great. There is James, the loving husband, but there is also James the worn down guy who was put in a situation NO human being wants to be in.
      And Pixel Bush comes right in and just dismisses that entire cavern of nuance as "Toxic Masculinity"..

    I agree with everything that you've said.
    I also had my own thoughts on PH's appearance in DBD.
    The Entity saw the potential for violence and torture in the Executioner and desired him for itself. It ripped Pyramid Head from Silent Hill, a reality very similar to its own, but PH is a concept rather than a person.
    Now in the Entity's world, without being bound by James or the laws of Silent Hill and being allowed to exist independently of them, Pyramid Head is now completely unleashed. The behaviors that gave him shape can now be directed towards anybody or anything with no restraints.
    The Entity tortured its killers so they would perform its rituals correctly, but the Executioner does not have a past on which to torment or a pain threshold. He was created to punish and torture and that is what he'll do.
    For now, the Entity's trials serve the same purpose but PH cannot be controlled, so it remains to be seen what effect the Executioner's presence will have in this world.
    There is one thing that bothers me, though. When Freddy Kruger was brought here, he noted that his powers were tempered in some ways and focused in others. This was done by the Entity, so I'm wondering if Pyramid Head's powers were allowed or if they were an accident.

    I just love this idea not just because of how much sense it makes, but also that it gives a killer an actual win condition. All the other killers have no place outside the entities realm, either their long dead, should be dead, are considered criminals or have nowhere to go after. If the entity is ever defeated, whether by behavior doing a final pre DBD shutdown event to slay the entity, or just the servers being shut down...the entity loses. And if the entity loses, dying off because it cannot feed off emotion anymore or being defeated by outside forces freeing the survivors? Pyramid Head wins. His job is done. He's the only killer that, just like in Silent Hill 2, can win through losing, if the entity is never bested, it's happy to eternally punish the guilt of survivors and the entity alike forever more, but if the ebeity is beaten, it still wind in the end. Putting the entity in its place, one way or another, so it can return to its eternal slumber in the memories of Silent Hill

    I really like the idea of the Executioner‘s sole purpose in the Entity’s realm being to punish it, but if he’s driven by guilt, what kind of guilt could manifest within the Entity?
    Guilt within the survivors would be logical since they’re all human, but the Entity isn’t bound to these emotions, nor does it fully understand them.
    The only explanation I‘d have is that the collective guilt of the different killers has manifested within the Entity, since it has attached itself to their minds and their memories, causing it to imitate these emotions in a way.
    I‘m not gonna say anything else though since I’m probably putting way too much thought into this.
    Pyramid Head is one of my favorite killers, and I really like the explanation you gave for his existence.

    I wonder if Legendary Skins factor into this: Lisa Garland (a ghost of Silent Hill), Cybil Bennett (a puppet of Silent Hill), and ESPECIALLY the girl who started it all, Alessa Gillsepie. I've always found the Alessa one fascinating in particular since she's arguably one of the antagonists too in additon to being one of the reasons Silent Hill is the hellscape it is. Plus she and Cheryl were both the mothers of God (which might be part of the reason it's not Valtiel or Missionary since their task was to PROTECT the mother of God to a certain degree?).
    Feel free to debunk me if I'm wrong, I don't really know Silent Hill that well, just from what I've read in the wikis.

    • @PissQueen009
      @PissQueen009 3 года назад

      Oh baby. You sweet summer child. LET ME HELP YOU. First off, don’t look into the skins at all. They’re just for fun. Second, Lisa is not a ghost. She’s simply someone who was caught in the same web of pain and suffering due to her proximity. Alessa liked Lisa so she wasn’t among the first people to feel he wrath, one of the literal last in fact. Thirdly, Cybil was no puppet. To date, the only “puppet” silent hill actively used was Maria from the second game. I know why you’d assume she was a puppet but silent hill itself didn’t do that. It was Dahlia/Kauffman that knocked her unconscious and infected her in the same parasite that the doctors/nurses in the hospital were infected with. Next, Alessa is the victim. 200000% and I’m not hearing otherwise. If your house was set on fire, would you blame the fire for burning your house down, or the person who started the fire? Alessa was a victim of horrendous amounts of torture and kept alive and in agony. Her constant state of pain is what silent hill represents. Alessa is the fire. She didn’t want to birth god, she wanted to be with her mother. In being close with her mother, the ritual began. Bing bang boom god fetus. Lastly, people will argue against it but if the sky is blue, why say the sky isn’t blue, ya know? Pyramid head literally is Valtiel. Same being, different forms. Yes logically “Valtiel” wouldn’t want to harm the mother of god BUUUUUUUUT the Heather in dbd is, canonically speaking, after the events of sh3. At that point, she’s killed god. She is no longer preggo so it would make sense in that aspect. Also, Mercenary literally tried to kill Heather. He lowkey highkey showed footage of the boss battle from the game itself, so that logic doesn’t track. If you want a reason as to why he did, as Claudia said, Heather’s heart needed to be filled with hatred and anger. This thing just killed her dad and is ready to whoop her ass next. That would drive her into a fury. Walked right into Claudia’s trap.
      I hope I didn’t come off as shitty, you just have THE WORST understanding of sh and I don’t blame you! You said it yourself; you really only know what wiki told you. Clearly this bitch is gonna have to go and update some shit cause that’s not a cute look 💖💖

    I feel like you can read the entity in two ways. Either as a malevolent force that understands humans to some level and can manipulate them or a more primordial force that doesn't really understand its actions or the humans its subjugates only doing things out of instinct and for its own survival.

    James could be abducted by the Entity and thrown into the void, simply to be able to project PH (Entity is picky, check Spirit's backstory), but not being good enough of a survivor to suck hope from. With this in mind, PH might be the first killer to not be actual being (as he isn't actual being in the first place) and just be Entity's projection, just like everything else is (except characters in game).
    Your explanantion is almost perfect... but even though The Entity is filled with guilt (some bits of it at least, mostly hope) it's not IT'S guilt, it's not devouring it from the inside.
    But it does explain his power during trials perfectly, I have to admit that! Good stuff!
    I agree that Myers is on the same page as PH as he is evil incarnate and Entity can't just torture him into obeying, but Amanda, as twisted as she is, is just human. I treat her traps more like tools she've been braught with and actually panicking inside for survivors to get them off.

    Cheryl/Heather may not have encountered Pyramid Head, but surely Alessa - being daughter of the high priestess - would have known the history

    Hey Idk if it’s possible but is there gonna be a Kate Denson lore video? I mean I remember you saying that she could be the main protagonist (she’s not cuz apparently it’s Adam) and also i don’t know if it’s because I’m dumb but I didn’t really understand her archive cinematics too. Anyways I love ur videos

    Another thing that could cause pyramid head is survivors that feel guilty like Ash because in the first two Evil Dead films every one dies except for Ash. He probably feels guilty for their deaths. He feels like he could had saved them but couldn't. He even was a coward in the first film until he was the only one left.
    Or maybe Elodie because she was the one who summoned the entity and caused her and everyone else's parents to be taken. That could be apart of the reason she searched for the entity.
    But theirs more to pyramid head then punishing the guilty and I can't think of any one who represents toxic masculinity in their backstory

    In Silent Hill Origins, Downpour, AND Homecoming, pyramid head appears to the protagonists so it can’t just be exclusive to James’ psyche.

    Konami's gonna keep using Pyramid Head, so we might as well get used to it. I do think the Killer should have either been the Missionary, Claudia Wolf, or the Memory of Alessa, just because they are prominant in her story, and would have more reason to appear with Heather in DbD. However, Pyramid Head's apperance also makes sense to me.
